PRESALE AND SALE ENDED... I think
to the People that didn't get their tickets:
I'm sorry that everyone did not get what they wanted. But I bet you can pick up tickets for at around $20 at stubhub, craigslist, ticketking, ebay, etc.. easily. Plus a few hours before the show, there are scalpers hanging around the paviliion, which you can buy from for cheap, I hope, otherwise no one would buy them. It's so sad that it is sold out after 3 minutes, because of the nature of the scalpers. I went to stubhub, and saw a seller who had 50 (FIFTY) tickets to sell at $99.00 each, that is just disgusting. The whole nature of scalping is just plain disgusting, and ruins for the fun for everyone. One person was selling 7 tickets at $700.00 each! Of course no one is going to buy the 700 tickets, because it's not even worth $700 haha to go to the concert.
ENJOY!
Post yours!

How many different Vfest prediction/wishlist threads will there be?
But since you designated this one as "official," I guess this is the only one we need.
I'd like to see Blur, Jarvis Cocker, SFA (although the festival would probably have to be in September for this to happen).
The only artists I can think of that would instantly sell me on a festival right now are SFA and Prince. SFA seem to be putting off a US tour, and Prince would not lower himself to playing a small Vfest.
-
I only post in UNOFFICIAL threads where speculation can run rampant....

I searched prior to making this thread, and I found nothing about 2009 predictions (I believe), so I want to make this one official, so others will see that they don't have to make another one
Every thread relating to virgin mobile, is dated back in 2008...
So here it is!

Not true. This was posted within the last week and a half.

I stand corrected, well anyways, this is the official then! :-\

Not that I'm really expecting it this year but seems that every major music festival in the area in the past 6 years or so includes BRMC. They always seem to be their fence sitter magnet card sometimes pulled out of the organizers pocket at the last minute. Whenever the hardcore fence sitters see BRMC on the bill, it pulls them right into the festival yard.
Haven't looked at their tour schedule so have no idea how feasible this might be.
-
Neil Young
Clutch
Ween
The Roots
Tom Petty
Depeche Mode
Reverend Horton Heat
A bunch of hot, hipster flavor-of-the-month bands
or..
Faith No More and any combination

i'd prefer they do a club date than play the festival. but your right, if i see them on the bill i'll def go. they may be available, they dont have tour dates listed yet

;D ;D ;D
Cali, you made me laugh. I'm telling you, they work like a charm! At least in this area.
Someone else mentioned Animal Collective. They too are a good bet especially since they are local and have been the darlings of the Indie set this year. Personally, I can take them or leave them but I would love for them to be on the bill. Partly just to show some support to the local scene but also there is some beauty to them playing MPP with their hit LP being named MPP. Kind of a nice little mutual back scratching between IMP and the band. The backlashers can use their set as their dinner, bathroom, fun, whatever break.

BRMC are supposedly not touring until the next album (which is in production as we speak, and has no label yet). Of course they said this before and completely ignored it, but so far this year their sticking to it (aside from a trip to Poland). I wouldn't count on it, and I'd definitely be surprised.
I hope there's nobody in the lineup I really want to see because I can't afford these festival things :P

Geez I feel like BRMC gossip queen

I saw Aux 88 do a live PA back in Cleveland i believe a LONG time ago. it was quite entertaining, in a soul train meets breakdancing sort of way.
I dont know that many of my requests are time relevant as far as DJs go, but i would love to see
Robert Armani
Carl Cox (like, he can play every year, please)
Derrick Carter
Dave Clarke
Ricardo Villalobos
and i truly think we need some sort of Dutch/German gabber DJ to play just to freak everyone out really bad.
can i wish for Radiohead?
haha

some DJs/acts I'd like to see for a dance tent:
adam freeland

hey seth... Orbital is back and is doing shows in the UK.... just sayin'...

Thank you. This topic definitely needed a remake.
But what if there were links to the different posts with the different staff in the first post? That would make this topic much easier to navigate.

They've been pretty quite lately so I kind of knew they were stashed away working on an album which is why I said that I doubted they would be at the festival but who knows. Aren't they out in L.A.? That makes it less likely we'll see them for awhile. If they were here in the East than they would be more likely to consider taking a break and playing if the money was right or they just needed to get out for a bit.
See, the BRMC affect is something that I've noticed awhile ago and thought that the time was right to mention it. ;D
One thing that is sort of bugging me about this thread is that it's title notes your 'predicions' but a lot of people are listing their 'wishes'. Two totally different things. Honestly, I'm not going to even bother with my wishes since I know that about 99% of them won't be on the bill. Probably 100% for that matter.
Regarding 'predictions', well, other than my Animal Collective post, I think the rest of you have a much better handle on that than I. So, carry on....
-
I'm glad to see *one* other person mentioned Franz Ferdinand. I really hope they get on the bill, they haven't gotten to do many festivals over here this year (Coachella and Bumbershoot), but are doing tons in the UK and Europe.
Come to think of it, they'll be in the states with Green Day through August 25th. Shouldn't be a problem to get them. Someone? Anyone?
-
Kosmo's list FTW!
And like Jaguar, my predictions list and wishlist would most likely be mutually exclusive.
Can't five or six of us get together and put on something? :)
-
Faith No More
Swervedriver
Fugazi (probably wouldn't happen in a millon years but I can dream can't I)?
Rollins Band
-
Since this year will most probably be at the merriweather, do you think we'll be seeing major bands, way beyond weezer and blink 182?
-

Not at all.
It just doesn't seem logical to have a band play a festival at a venue that they could easily sell out on their own.
-
y'all be forgetting that, IMHO, the "regular" merriweather stage will be vfest's second stage. the festival's "main stage" will be set up out in a parking lot, will be all-GA, and will potentially be able to accommodate more people than the "regular" stage. so while blink+weezer might easily sell out merriweather's regular stage, they'll need help with an expanded GA-only parking lot stage.
-
Great 'smaller' acts >>>> a few good headliners

not necessarily. when HFStival was held there, the main stage was the ampitheater with smaller acts in the parking lot.
I think the best set up would be a combo of two stages in the lot going rapid fire one after another (they do this for warped tour) but this would drastically cut down on attendance unless a 3rd stage (the pavilion) was used.
Ultimately, as Vfest did last year, there was no real main stage or side stage really as far as acts went, at least not for the last few bands.
Also, to comment on gaaaah's comment, i dont see that Seth would necesarily only book the amount of bands he thinks will sell X amount of tickets. not only is he trying to build a brand, but there will be something to make up for with the venue change and all. plus, if the fest is 2 nights, with Weezer and Blink playing one night, someone has to play the other.
-
Great 'smaller' acts >>>> a few good headliners
Here here.
Without the huge acts, tickets would cost much less. I'd be more inclined to go to a festival where I wouldn't have to shell out nearly $100/day; much (most?) of which would go to an act(s) I'd have no interest in seeing.
-
Anyone else really want to hear that Antony/Herbert colabboration live? I do after hearing a recording of the Coachella set.
-

I have been told the second stage will be in symphony woods. The main stage will be the actual pavilion.
-
I'm not really a huge fan of either, but from the few videos I saw, this was pretty rad.

dammit...I really hope they find another venue if that is the case. Shouldn't be able to call it a 'fest' if a pavilion stage is involved.

oh well then in that case, you can just go sit along LP Parkway and watch the bands for free!
-
When they had the HFStival there, the side stage was also in the symphony woods. I could not see the road from there, it was a portable stage in a big grassy field with fencing all around it. The good thing was unlike this past weekend's show, you couldn't hear the main stage from there (and vice-versa).
-
Faith No More
Swervedriver
Fugazi (probably wouldn't happen in a millon years but I can dream can't I)?
Rollins Band
Faith No More would be awesome. ..and sell a whole shload of tickets.
But what would be even more awesome.. get Faith No More to headline the Mike Patton stage. With.. Peeping Tom, opening for Mr. Bungle, opening for Fantomas, opening for Faith No More.
That's all i know of the top of my head. Seriously, how many bands does he have?
-

i think that was the Locals Only stage that was in Symphony Woods.

Faith No More is right up there with My Bloody Valentine for bands whose small but rabid cadre of remaining fans think that everyone is apeshit for their band, when in reality we're not.
They would really sell a shitload of tickets to a large festival? Really?
-
what do you really care anyway?
-
Are we sure it's going to be Merriweather? Doesn't Seth have arrangements/partnerships with other venues? I'm thinking Bull Run for one.
How about Lake Fairfax? I know they had Lollapalooza there way back when....
Nothing against MPP, it's a great venue...just doesn't lend itself well to a festival.

They would really sell a shitload of tickets to a large festival? Really?
Depends on your definition of shitload. It is a relative term afterall. So yeah, relative to a lot of the names that are being tossed around, factoring in they've flat-out said they aren't going to do any american festivals, I do believe that a shitload of people would by a ticket to this festival purely because Faith No More was playing it, if they were to show up.
Any other questions?
-
That's your evidence? Ok, i'll say no more.
So yeah, relative to a lot of the names that are being tossed around, factoring in they've flat-out said they aren't going to do any american festivals,

-
Ha, evidence? I've got none of that, I'll give you that.
I can see I'm going to need even more qualifiers to wiggle my way out of saying they'd sell a shload of tickets.
First off, I wouldn't pay festival prices to see Faith No More, so I'm not sure why I'm even trying to make this argument for them. The only band I'm that big of a homer for is Hum, who fit the exact scenario you mentioned.. fans who think they're band is big enough that everyone cares, but everyone really doesn't. I at least realize Hum would probably only sell about 3 to 4 thousand tickets if that, to a huge festival.
Faith No More certainly wouldn't be a headliner and won't draw that level of people. They'd draw on the same level I believe Iggy and the Stooges did last year (coincidentally, the only reason I went to V-Fest last year). But yeah, I'm fairly certain that as a mid-level band, playing a few slots before the headliners, they'd sell a good deal more tickets than the percentages indicate a band in that slot should.
Okay, a shitload of tickets.. maybe an exaggeration when you're thinking in the context of the entire festival. But I firmly believe they'd sell their fare share and then some.
Fair enough?
-

There's that Dbagness we all come to know and not love from Charlie.. Your taste in music and bands is far more superior than everyone else. Congrats yet again.
They would def help sell the festival because they do have a very rabid following. How large or small I have no idea but rabid I am certain. I also really think they would and add a really nice texture to what I hope is going to be a really well rounded mish mosh of bands. I'm sure they would also kick much ass live. Not that is matters as stated before they have said they will not play US festivals but if anyone can convince them I'm sure Seth would be the man.

dude, dont cave to your original statement cause some over the hill suburban dad who likes country music said you were wrong! he's not going, nor does he know enough people to have any idea how many people would buy a ticket cause of a certain band
(though i do agree FNM would not do much for selling tickets. either would OLP who i am sincerely hoping to see on the bill, but doubt i will)

I retract my retraction: FNM will, regardless of your definition, sell a shitload of tickets if invited!

Hey Boy,
Why does my having an opinion that differs from yours constitute me being a d-bag?
I have a friend who flew halfway across the county to see Better Than Ezra. You could make a claim that most any band has a small but rabid following.
Are they really in any positition for Seth to have to go grovelling to get them to play? They were never very popular for very long, and are irrelevant at best now. They're only a small step above playing state fairs, double billing with Smashmouth. Seth: I say skip them and get somebody either more now or more classic. :P

Charlie Douchebag japanese golfer..
There is nothing wrong with an opinion, I just notice you go out of your way to express yours in as negative way as possible, HENCE you are a DOUCHEBAG.
It's cool, The world needs douchebags, Just accept what you are and own it man. That's all I'm sayin. I question why your even looking at this thread? I'm pretty sure you think your way too cool to attend one of these 'sell out fests' anyways right?
I'm done with the bashing and apologize to anyone I may have offended. Just pointing out the obvious. Back on topic now I promise.

Davyboy, don't take it personally. You see his post count under his name, with 17,000+ posts? I know you're new, but you'll soon come to see that easily 16,900 of those are him being a douchebag. Thats what he is, the resident contrarian, douchebag. He literally once wrote a negative review of a show it was later proven he did not attend. Its just Nakatestes being Nakatestes.
That said, he's probably right that not more than 4,000-5,000 people would come for FNM. I never understood the appeal of any of Patton's bands.
-
not only that, but the majority of people i know who are infatuated with Mike Patton (which includes 1 old hippie and 4 tattoo artists) would probably not even go to the festival even if they were playing, cause they totally arent about that scene. and if they did go, they would go, stay for FNM and leave.
when are we getting details about this anyway? seth?
-
Julie,
Thank you for all of your compliments, now go home and lay your teenage girlfriend.
They'd draw 4000-5000 fans to a summer festival, fans who otherwise wouldn't go? If that's the case, i'd say go ahead and book them.
Would they even draw that many to a headlining gig at Patriot Center or DAR? And if they did, you have to figure a number of those people would drop out if it meant having to pay bigger bucks to see them at a festival.
Charlie
PS: sonic is right, i don't really care. then again, i'm sure hailf the people who have posted on this thread probably don't really care. If the festival was under $30 and featured some bands i liked, then i'd care. maybe this will be there year those things happen.
-

As part of a larger tour? No. If it was their only American date? Yes.
-
Julie,
Oh, and it's Jules, not Julie. I'll thank you to get it right.

This got pretty heated petty quick.
It's almost as if this thread needs some official announcement to distract people...
*cough*
-
DeathFromAbove 1979, huh? Those are both Smashing Pumpkins songs. You must be a huge fan.
-
FNM said they'd never play an american festival again.
getting them to actually play an american festival = big draw. some people would travel for this. IMHO, a lot of tickets will be sold. whether "a lot" is the same as "a shitload" is not something i'm inclined to debate.
Thats what he is, the resident contrarian, douchebag.
a contrarian curmudgeon is more precise, IMO. luckily, we need all types 'round here. charlie does his bit to keep things interesting even if his auto-hate is often predictable.
He literally once wrote a negative review of a show it was later proven he did not attend.
ah, so he has two things in common with FHM! :)

Come on Seth haha! Look what you are doing here, you are creating chaos! We need an official announcement now!!
Anyways, residing from the heated argument above, someone said that the official announcement would be June 26th. Don't count on it though, since it looks like it could be any other date.

Some random guy just said it, and it's highly doubtful he would just slap a date, and just press "post"

DFA is a band, chode.
Oh? I've never heard of them. Are they some sort of My Bloody Valentine cover band or something?

So I heard it is going to be on the weekend of the 29-30th August
Any confirmations?

Coldplay please!

how about some of these bands portrayed on this metal sludge thing that trent is all worked up over? i predict it could be as cool as last year's hollywood undead.
-
How about pitting the members of Hollywood Undead and the Insane Clown Posse in a fight to the death?
That would make for good entertainment.
-

*vomet*
Im almost glad I didnt go last year. I dont know how I have a friend who ACTUALLY listens to them. Sometimes I just wanna sit him down and make him listen of decent music. For the rest of his life.
-
So I heard it is going to be on the weekend of the 29-30th August
Any confirmations?
maybe just the 30th.
-
If it's just one day, I really hope it's more than just getting a few more bands, and attaching the Vfest name to a Blink/Weezer concert.
-
I hope the Blink/Weezer concert has nothing to do with it but that's becoming less and less likely. :(
-
be awesome if they got flight of the conchords.
;D
-
is it possible vfest may happen late sept? phoenix is scheduled for Summerstage in NYC sept 25th with nothing else scheduled until ACL a week later. seems like they would be a decent draw for a festival...
-
Along the same lines Dino Jr. and Butthole Surfers will be doing Pop Montreal which happens in late sept early oct.... Perhaps someone finally got smart and has decided V-Fest Baltimore should happen around the same time when it's cooled off a touch.
-
sigh
-
vfest in sept: if true, this would be a VERY welcome development. the first vfest - held in september - was delightful, temperature-wise. i'd be much more willing to suffer through crap "filler" bands if i'm not suffering heat stroke as well.

JESUS CHRIST SETH
Just TELL us when it's going to happen, everyone is turning from anxious to furious. I'm not kidding. Many people I know won't even buy this year's ticket since this year = FAIL.

I'm beginning to think this festival should be sponsored by Viagra...
-
Late sept would be very welcomed.
-
its freakin August 30th people. seriously.
-
Ehh, unless Pearl Jam is on the bill, I'll skip this year. I'm in more of a financial crunch than I thought I was, and now PJ is supposedly playing Philly Oct 29, 30, and 31.
I hope the bill is still pretty good. Be patient, people.

Good lord stop being a baby. If you and your friends don't want to go just don't go. I'm sure when there are concrete details to announce they will be revealed. Do you think Seth is holding out on purpose just to annoy you or something? Get a life.
-
If you and your friends don't want to go just don't go.
It's hard to decide when there's no line-up. Just sayin'.
-
They will announce the full lineup...once they have a full lineup. IMP is not holding it back to annoy people on internet forums. They simply don't have the commitments yet.
Expect Blink 182, Weezer, and Ben Harper among headliners. IMP knows time is ticking so expect a lineup or partial lineup any day now.

no, making it free is an easy way to lose more than last year.
no way vfest is going to be free. maybe cheap, but not free.
-
Ozzfest went free a few years back and made money, allegedly. It's all about finding corporate sponsorships (iffy in this economy) and keeping the lineup relatively cheap.
-
Eh?

Well that cancels out the McCartney rumors (Fed Ex Field August 1), and wow that's close to VFest. I bet there were some attempts at negotiation.

With the Flaming Lips playing MPP on Friday, Blink/Weezer potentially on the Sunday and the Killers on Monday, what are the possibilities that "Vfest" isn't so much a festival as a series of concerts at MPP over four days?
-
well, since tickets to the Killers have already gone on sale (they have right?), i cant see them being packaged into anything like that.
seems like anything thats part of Vfest would have to be announced, ticketed together.
-
That's a good point. It just seems strange. You'd think a festival at a non-festival setting would require more set-up/clean-up time, but the Lips/Killers shows really squeeze that weekend together.
I'm kinda worried it will just be throwing the Vfest name on the Blink/Weezer show, and getting a few more openers, to make it an all day show, possibly just one stage.
We're at the point now we're we'll have to find out for sure very soon, so I suppose it's back to waiting.

yeah, see. look, with at least 2 stages, theres NO reason to be griping cause Blink is headlining (if they even are). 9 out of 10 festivals i attend i donteven like the headliners (Kanye West, RHCP, Coldplay, jack johnson)
there could be 18 more bands on the bill plus a dance tent. plus, leaving when Blink goes on = getting home early and avoiding traffic!!!
lets get this thing announced this week though. (i love me some Holy Fuck!)
and wait, a Freefest???? apparently it IS free.....who'd a thunk. ....oh yeah, seth.
-
Holy Fuck is the exact band I'd want at a festival. I saw them open for SFA last year, and enjoyed them, but their set got a bit tiring after a while. A festival spot would be a good chance for people to check a band like Holy Fuck out.
And for free? Appealing...
-
Holy Fuck were a good first set band at Lollapalooza last year. Though I do prefer them somewhere like RNRH. It was weird seeing them in the mid day sun.
If its free is it first come, first served?
-
I assume if it's free there will be some sort of system to get tickets. Maybe something like Ozzfest did.
So, logically, an official announcement is coming very soon?
-
How was the system for ozzfest for getting tickets?
-
I don't know exactly, but it had something to do with getting tickets from various companies, which I guess is how the event was paid for.
-
I just have a bad feeling about this. I'm not in the business of booking bands, but I'm assuming the acts get paid the same amount that they would if the show wasn't free for fans, right? I'm just worried about the lineup. Weezer and Blink 182 as headliners? I'm not a big Ozzfest/heavy metal guy either, but I remember that free Ozzfest as a lineup that seemed a bit lacking in quality (in terms of heavy metal lineups). Furthermore, if this V-Fest lineup does turn out to be a winner, the idea of logging onto sponsor websites as part of some big ticket lottery seems like a pain in the ass. On any case, I hope things turn out great. Its nice to have a festival close to home - even when the lineup isn't to my liking (last year's wasn't) I hope its a success. I just don't feel that optimistic at this point.
-
This is how some people saw how the free ozzfest went.
http://www.metalmartyr.com/the-waperd-tour-organizer-speaks-out-against-free-ozzfest/
-
I have no idea how the Ozzfest thing worked out, I guess it's just a decent example to cite if Vfest is indeed free.
Money will have to come from somewhere, so I'm curious to see where.

So Virgin Mobile Fest is happening, but it will be a scaled back event. I'll admit I'm surprised. I do recall when the 1st Virgin Mobile Fest announced their line-up in July 2006. I'm wondering what bands will they get to convince concert goers this is worth attending. We'll find out Wednesday.
-
well if dc101 is announcing the lineup my guess includes papa roach, nickelback, shine down, live, jimmys chicken shack, puddle of mud, and hinder.

Tickets go on sale for free this sat the 27th at 10am through ticketmaster with the lineup above. The website is open for business as well now.
-
add Franz Ferdinand to the bill.
-
I wonder how many tickets will be up for grabs per customer. I just want to make sure that I could get 4 tickets for my family. I'm really thinking about doing the option where a donation is made, you get tickets and tshirts.
I really love the line up and the cause it's supporting.
Good job, Seth!
-
To whoever put Franz on the bill, thank you. I'll be coming with an entourage of fellow fans, depending on who can make travel arrangements and nab the free tickets Saturday. I'm also glad to see JET on there. Been a few years since I saw them, they're excellent too.
To the media that keep leaving Franz off... stop doing that. They're successful enough. Right now they're 3rd on the bill, so my guess is, headlining the 2nd stage. When you all see what a good live show they are, you'll be singing a different tune.
-
Agree about FF!
-
Impressive free lineup!
When it says previous V-Fest buyers how will that be handled?
Im considering doing the 2 tickets 2 shirts for 55 dollars as well.
-
pretty good for free way to go Seth. Now lets see if everyone here is able to get tickets haha. I'm also interested on how previous buyers are able to get first dibs.
-
35,000 tickets! :o
-
ok I see previous buyers get first dibs starting tomorrow.
-
also Seth will be on Eliot in the morning starting aroud 820 or so talking about the festival
-
I wonder how much people will be reselling the tickets for? Or how will that be prevented?
-
Seth talking about cupcakes and the forum. All the cynical people and doubters out there. Way to go!
-
Don't forget about all the whiners...
-
very cool, i'll definitely be going.
So yeah, how do the previous buyers get tickets to this? if someone could post that info today that'd be awesome because i'm stuck at work today.
-
virgin festival is free this year seth said this morning tickets first 35000 1 day aug 30th

Seth mentioned that you should get an email with a passcode. I'm guess ticketmaster would be sending out the email since they have the records of you buying the tickets from last year.
-

...so what it you went to a ticketmaster outlet to buy tickets?
-
Hats off to Seth and his hard working crew for pulling this festival together. Personally I think Merriweather will be an ideal location for medium sized festivals and will be curious to see how it works out. It's a great location, has good facilities, parking isn't bad and SHADE! did i mention it has SHADE and places to get away from the madness.... I hope to get tickets and plan on slipping in for Franz Ferdinand and possibly Weezer
Now if we could only get a festival there targeted to the underserved Curmudgeon demographic at some point... It's really all about the SHADE
-
I fully expect the tickets to be gone before Saturday morning, taken by the first dibs people. If any of you first dibs people want to grab three tickets for me, I would be grateful....and promise I won't scalp them.
-
Seth,
What about people who bought tickets at a venue like 930 club for V-Fest in the past? Can we get in on the first dibs tickets?
-
Anyone tape it?

I was reading Billboard and it said they won't say how many tickets will be on sale for this "pre-sale." You think it will be all of them?
-
I listened to it on my way to work but didn't tape it. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Seth, but he comes across as a genuinely nice, funny guy.
I thought his jabs at the cynical 9:30 Club forum posts were pretty clever. He mentioned two posts: one about Blink 182 being awful and how it pushed him to make it a really solid lineup, and the other about the price of beer and concessions (wml7's "20 dollar beers" joke). All concessions will be the same, normal price. He also said that he reads the forum every morning.
Seth said that he wanted to reveal the lineup weeks ago when talking to Elliot but couldn't (probably because Virgin told him not to).
He joked about selling cupcakes at Virgin FreeFest, and Elliot said they should be free. Seth remarked that it was a great idea, and he should give out free Virgin Cupcakes at the show.
Seth covered all the questions I had in the interview. And there's a 2 ticket limit per person. He said you can pay $5 to have tickets mailed ("convenience charge") OR pick them up for free at 9:30 Club or Merriweather Post Pavilion the week of the show. They'll be asking for $5 donations to charity, but nothing is required.
Anyone tape it?
Seth talking about cupcakes and the forum. All the cynical people and doubters out there. Way to go!
-
I'd also like to add that I'm excited about the show. The lineup is OK. Even though there are some bands on the bill that I'm not into, I'm viewing it as a great opportunity to see Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, The National, St. Vincent, and Girl Talk for free in the shade. I also really like the charity donations idea, the pre-sale for previous purchasers, and the free ticket pick-up at 9:30 Club. Well thought out!
-
>>>He joked about selling cupcakes at Virgin FreeFest, and Elliot said they should be free. Seth remarked that it was a great idea, and he should give out free Virgin Cupcakes at the show.
I don't remember hearing Seth say the Virgin cupcakes would be free; in fact he clearly said that you'll pay the usual prices for food
-
Will the whole place (pit and all) be GA or are a few hundred thousand people fighting over a few decent seats?
-
so how does one get tickets for this?
-
the way merriweather generally handles GA shows is that the first XXX people get wristbands for the Orch Pit at the Pavilion. the next XXXX people get wristbands for the pavilion and after that, you're in the lawn.
I would expect the same here for the orchestra pit, but they could perhaps keep the pavilion less on lockdown.
its really the only way to stop from 20,000 people cramming into the pavilion. (i can imagine people with clickers trying to count who comes in and out!)
-
I fully expect the tickets to be gone before Saturday morning, taken by the first dibs people. If any of you first dibs people want to grab three tickets for me, I would be grateful....and promise I won't scalp them.
i think this is strange. i would have figured that they would have tied these tickets into dozens of marketing events, giveaways at shows, radio stations, etc. thats strange if they are just giving them away at ticketmaster.
btw, i'm so glad to see Pete Tong. i heart him.
-
theres actually a couple of band on there i like. and at a venue i dont hate. good job, seth. i'd actually consider going
-
do they email a presale code to those who went in years past?
Looking not too shabby for a free one day fest in the woods of Columbia.
-
After I heard the whole "previous V-fest buyers have first dibs" bit, I did something I rarely do, namely log into my ticketmaster account. Apparently you can see in your purchase history what tickets you've bought while "signed in" at ticketmaster. The two previous times I've been to V-fest (2006 and day 2 of 2008) are right there in my history. Perhaps if you log into ticketmaster before attempting to buy tickets tomorrow, it'll recognize you as a previous purchaser.
-

i wonder what the criteria for inclusion here is - only last year's VFest attendees? i was at the first Vfest - do i qualify?

i still haven't got any emails

I signed up for updates, but have not gotten any emails or any codes. Kinda like the 9:30 weekly blast email. ;)

So those of us who paid with cash at the MPP box office for our VFest tix are left out of the presale?
Awesome!

I have not yet received an e-mail. I purchased tickets in 2007 and won VIP passes last year.

This was my concern too.

yeah I signed up for the updates on the website awhile ago too but also the website was acting weird so maybe my email didn't go thru. But you would think people who got that from ticketmaster which I got last year would get an email. Hmmm
-
One of you who gets the code should just post it on here.
-
I'm also wondering if the codes are each unique or pretty much the same.
-
i've gone the past two years and have no code

i will look very dimly at any posted codes...

I bought mine at MPP last year as well. I'm hoping that pre-sale code will be sent out like normal pre-sale codes are. We'll see.
-
well you tell us how we're supposed to handle that one
Not sure you can, but thanks for asking. If the intent is to reward people who you know were there in the past - and who can blame you there? - then people who paid cash are simply out of luck. I don't think sending it to forum members or Volume subscribers is the right idea, either (though either one would help my cause).
-
well you tell us how we're supposed to handle that one
Totally, thanks for asking!
If we can prove we we're there: airline ticket stubs, v-fest ticket stubs, wristbands, credit card statement, TM receipts, Police playlist handed to us by Josh who was on duty at the front, etc., how about a PM with the presale?
If we show up at the window with proof of previous purchase, can we get our tickets then?
Just some suggestions...

send an email out to forum members with the code. :-*
i agree. i think the forum members should have a shot too!!! (somehow i dont think these tickets will be gone as fast as everyone thinks)
-
Wow, you'd go through that much effort to see Blink 182?
well you tell us how we're supposed to handle that one
Totally, thanks for asking!
If we can prove we we're there: airline ticket stubs, v-fest ticket stubs, wristbands, credit card statement, TM receipts, Police playlist handed to us by Josh who was on duty at the front, etc., how about a PM with the presale?
If we show up at the window with proof of previous purchase, can we get our tickets then?
Just some suggestions...
i hope you arent this much of a loser in real life.
-
i'm sure the code will be all over the net. i wouldn't sweat it.
-
Wow?!? Loser? Really? That's way uncool.
More like I love music; want to see Franz Ferdinand, the Bravery, Jet, and the National; and want to take my teenager for some free mom-son musical bonding. (Yeah, he likes blink.)
Peeps who've gone to over 30 shows at the 930 in the last 12 months and supported the V-Fest in two countries might just be live music fans, not losers. 8)
-
No code for me either, and i did check my ticketmaster and it definitely shows my purchases for 06 and 07.
-
Oh, and BTW. Just scoured my SPAM folders and filters and found the official email with the presale password.
Ahhh...
;D
-
I think everyone who bitched and moaned on the board about the Festival not happening, the bands sucking, IMP sucking etc, should get e-mailed a bogus code, just for fun.
-
FYI, I got an email w/ a code and I didn't go to any of 'em, but have been on the email list since last year.
-
yeah my email with code just showed up
-
i think seth should give all of the tickets to me, and i will trade them for hookers and blow
-
Just learned the presale codes from two people are the same
-
I wonder how quickly this thing will "sell" out?
I'm hoping I can get two tomorrow morning, and call it a day.
-
got it... actually got it 7 hours ago, according to GMail. i guess in a fit of post-vacation inbox purging (came back to hundreds of e-mails), i trashed it. my bad.
if all goes well tomorrow, this means that i'll be able to sleep in on saturday!
-
hmm still nada in my hotmail
-
I love that the Pitchfork announcement completely omits any mention of Blink-182.

It's bad journalism. It's like telling people there's free ice cream and leaving out that its infected with botulism.

further details:
Tickets are available only through Ticketmaster.com. Will call orders may be picked up at MPP or 9:30 Club box offices, but not tickets without a pre-existing order. Will call pickup dates are Fri 8/21 10am - Fri 8/28 9pm. Unclaimed will call will be released to the general public after 8/28! There is a 2 ticket limit per customer. A credit card is required to order tickets, even if you choose the no charge will call option. This is for identification and control purposes. All tickets are general admission. There are no reserved seats.
The ticket options are:
1. Free ticket with optional $5 per ticket delivery fee. No delivery fee on tickets picked up at will call at Merriweather or 9:30 Club box offices from 8/21-28.
2. Free ticket with $5 donation and optional $5 per ticket delivery fee. No delivery fee on tickets picked up at will call at Merriweather or 9:30 Club box offices from 8/21-28.
3. Karma Package - get a free ticket and 1 t-shirt for $30 or get 2 tickets and 2 t-shirts for $55. Prices include $5 donation and delivery fees.
i'm definitely doing the $5 donation option. i'd happily do the karma package if it meant that the charity got more money, but that doesn't appear to be the case - it's the same $5... and i don't need more t-shirts. i'll text in an additional donation instead.

Hey guys, I purchased tix last year at 9:30 and i'm assuming I dont get the presale code because it wasnt directly ticketmaster and i havent gotten that email yet. i went last year and in 07 and had a blast.
if anyone could PM me the code, I'd really appreciate it. i'll also keep it secret.
-
Just got my password. Came through the Virgin site that I signed up for a month ago.
-
also, to those who have gotten tickets today, how many have you been able to get? whats the limit?
still want a code if anyone wouldnt mind, i'd really appreciate it.
-
also, to those who have gotten tickets today, how many have you been able to get? whats the limit?
Sounds like 2.
-
you'll note that i highlighted the fact that unclaimed will-call tickets will be released to the public on 8/28... guess that means out-of-towners who want to attend will have to pony up $5 for physically mailed tix. no day-of will-call pick up at the venue (expect maybe for tickets bought after 8/28 - can't confirm this)
also, to those who have gotten tickets today
no one got tickets today. presale starts tomorrow. and yes, limit is 2.
-
ah ok. cool. thanks for telling me.
-

ditto ;)
-
are you guys getting the presale code from tm or virgin? i still have no email, bought virgin fest tix from ticketmaster the last 2 years and signed up for updates from the virgin mobile fest site the last 3 years last time being this past monday. can someone please shed some light or help me out?
-
the subject line of the e-mail was, for me, "This Year Virgin Mobile Festival is FREE!". try doing a search for that. don't forget to look in your trash and spam folders too (these are often omitted from searches and you need to specify that you wanna search there too).
-

So does that mean the karma packages are on sale tomorrow for the presale? Just wondering. I tried getting a karma package today and it said no tickets were available and it made me a bit scared. I really want to get a karma package instead of just the free tickets.
Also, one more question, where is the pre-sale code coming from? I'm on the 930 club's mailing list and I'm on the v-fest mailing list. I've attended the last two years. I've yet to get the code, so I'm a little freaked out.
ps- if anyone would like to help me, please feel free to share the code.

I checked every possible combination. Still no dice :-\

way to go skippy.

yup still no code and I don't think i'm getting it by now so anyone care to share pm me. Thanks. ;D

Just remember that I bought my ticket to the first Virgin fest at the Clubs boxoffice, which would explain why the pw hasn't arrived yet....

well the password is all over the internet now. I thought it would be something unique to each previous buyer but guess not. May the free for all begin tomorrow ;D
-
just got the email and i got tickets at the 930 box office last year with cash. dont remember if i signed up for the updates here, but i doubt i did. i am on the 930 mailing list though.
-
also, i want to thank seth and virgin mobile for putting this together and providing a dance tent. i'm looking forward to getting groovy to pete tong and others. thanks for booking the real talent and not some shitty ed banger dj or something.
and thanks for public enemy, too. i've been wanting to see them for a while now.

Hey! DJ Mehdi is fucking awesome! Plus they don't do free shows :X At least not ones in Columbia Maryland.
Got my password, Im completely out of the loop on this Ive been out of town since Sunday but my friend is telling me I got a password because I bought my tickets in previous years on-line or something? Either wait. Weezer is worth free. And Public Enemy, that's sick. and Wale. Pete Tong is interesting.

I wonder if they will set up the schedule where it's possible to catch every band with just a litle bit of overlap. Going back and forth from the forest to the main stage will be a hike from what I remember from hfstival. That was also GA I think and it was impossible to get in the pit unless you been there all day.

at HFStival you bought pit tickets seperately, so unless you paid extra, you weren't getting in anyway.

I got my password at 8:30! Woohoo!
Unfortunately I'm having an endoscopy in the morning, so I might not even be awake from the procedure until after 10. Let's hope the pre-sale doesn't immediately "sell out."
-
I cant really imagine this thing selling out "instantly", especially with only a 2 ticket limit in the presale.
It's free, but keep this in mind. The main "act" being advertised here is Blink 182 (as the headliner and reunion). I cant imagine there being alot of overlap between the people who want to catch Blink on the reunion tour and the people went to v-fest last year. They are 2 different fanbases methinks. In other words, I dont think the blink fans will get their hands on them until saturday.
-
That's a great point.
But the presale code may have leaked out, and Blink fans might be all over the pre-sale too. I'm hoping I can get my two tomorrow morning, get them mailed to me, and be good to go.
However, with that Flaming Lips show at MPP on that friday, picking them up then at will call is an option...
On that note, has anyone seen ticket prices for the Lips at Merriweather?
-
I havent seen them yet, dont think they're up. Some of the prices for their other shows this summer were around the 40-45 dollar range I think, so that may give you an idea of what to expect.
-
So I'm going to use my ticketmaster account to get a pair.
And my wife is going to use her ticketmaster account (and credit card) to get another pair.
Can I pick up her pair at the box office, if I have her id and credit card, or does she have to be the one who picks them up?

Can someone pm me the pw? it's for my nephew ;)
-
got it thanks!
-
Anyone know how this is going to be set up? something along the lines of Warped tour would be better than actually having it in the pavilion and could accommodate more people ala an actual festival setting don't you think?
-
yes but does warped tour not use the pavillion? I don't think they could set it up without using the pavillion. You have to think a lot of people would be on the lawn as well watching it from there.
-

I think the normal capacity for Merriweather is 18,000 or so. and thats packin it in. If they are saying 35,000 tickets are available then they are definitely using the pavilion. Also, there are the woods between the pavilion and the Mall, but I cant see them cramming 17,000 people there, so i think they may even use that AND that lot where Warped Tour is held (and where the 2nd HFS Stage was). this would also make spacing sense so that the dance tent isnt too overlapping.
I just want to make one request. dont put the dance tent in Symphony Woods cause its all effin muddy and dancing on those wood chips would pretty much ruin things. kthnx.
-
Can someone PM me the presale code too please? I have to be at a friend's graduation ceremony on Saturday and I don't want to miss the tickets. Thank you so much!
-
Can someone PM me too the password. Much appreciated.
-
Could someone msg me the presale? THANKS!
-
Got my two no problem. Will call option. Still had to pay 5 dollars service fee to ticketbastard. Still psyched though!
-
yeah, not really free, heh. Anyway, was super easy to get tickets.
-
of course there's always a fee. got my tix anyway.
-
I wasn't charged anything for will call. I do want to contribute to the charity though.

Got mine!!! 20 bucks for two tickets including donation for a day long fest isnt bad at all.
-
I wasn't charged anything for will call. I do want to contribute to the charity though.

I went will call as well and there was a $5 processing fee involved, which I wont lose sleep over just wish I knew it was coming as I would have added the donation up front instead of later.
-
Got my two tix. No fee at all (chose will call option). Will do charity donation directly via text message.
See you all there! {wink}
MK
-
Strange...mine said no processing fee and I received the confirmation. Makes up for the $25 of BS fees for McCartney tix.

anyone wanna PM me a password? :)
-
Got two tickets just now, after trying a couple times. Ticketmaster was being very slow for me. But two all-day tickets for $10 is a pretty sweet deal.
I really hope FF and Weezer don't play at the same time. Those are the two bands I want to see full sets by.
-
so I did the mail thing since who knows if i'm available for will call pickup but I thought it would be 5 total for mailing but thats 5 per ticket. Oh well still good.
-
Will call option didn't say anything about a specific pickup date window. I foresee problems if they don't mention that up front.
-
Got my tickets, totally free. Can I pick these guys up at the 930 box?
-
I was charged the $5 processing fee even though I used Will-Call, but that's fine. I didn't really expect TM to provide their service completely free. The service/convenience charges were $0. TM was crazy-slow for me, too. I was worried there for a few minutes.
-
Weird...I got two will call, and it cost me $5. Based on the email, it appears I chose the right things, but still got charged.
Hey, does anybody know Joe's address and phone number? He asked me to get tickets for him ,but ticketmaster needs that info. PM me. Thanks
-
So are they randomly charging some people? Bizarre.
-

yea, i'm not gonna lose sleep over it either. but i still find it odd that there were people who chose will call and were charged $5 for it and those who weren't charged. oh wait a second, it's TICKETMASTER.
-

It's free if you just do will call. It was the 5th or 6th option down.
-
I can vouch for that. I got charged when I ordered, went back and got two for Joe (making up a phone number) and wasn't charged.
So are they randomly charging some people? Bizarre.
-

They did state it up front. I saw it on this board, and on the ticketmaster page.

yep, also chose will call option and my email confirmation has $5 fee.

We'll have to create a forum hangout area at 932 or something, so people can drop by through out the day
-
hahaha. convering all the bases, or starting a scalping business?

The $5 charges must have been for the charity contribution $5 per ticket. They had so many options must have been a little confusing.
-
Not true. As stingy a bastard as I am, I would have never selected charity, not even by accident.
Although I'd be fine if ticketmaster took the mistake money and gave it to charity.

Honestly Im fine with 5$ for 2 tickets. Or even 5$ each.

Then it must be another example of Ticketbastard screwing the pooch again...add it to the long list.

the rest of the world - "a free concert with those bands? five dollars for processing? wow. thank you very much!!"
here - "a free concert? five dollars for processing? fucking rip off artists. fuck them!!"
-
I did the 5$ charity will call option for a pair. It cost 15, 10 for charity and 5 for the ticketmaster empire....
-
No, this $5 was a service charge and I got it too. When I went just a second later to get two for my sister there was no charge, perhaps it knew it'd already charged me? Out of curiosity, where is GAX13 or whichever number I got? I had GAX2 but it was on mail order so I clicked out to get will call, and I hope I didn't throw away 2nd row tickets because of $10 fee.
I also haven't seen anything about the VIP tickets mentioned in the post. I hope one of the places I already volunteer counts as a "designated youth shelter."
-
i think the rest of world would say the same thing. if you say free, should be free. no problem with paying $5 but i want to know up front
-
I ordered the mailed tickets, and it said standard mail was free, then added the $10 charge. It makes sense, kinda.
But I'm not going to complain about $5 per ticket. I don't see how anyone can, really.
-
the rest of the world - "a free concert with those bands? five dollars for processing? wow. thank you very much!!"
here - "a free concert? five dollars for processing? fucking rip off artists. fuck them!!"
to be fair when you've not expecting the fee it's a little off putting and if it's inconsistently being charge one has to wonder... it's not as "bad" as recent livenation no fee sale
-
I went with will call and $5 a ticket for charity donation (got two tickets). I am also fine with the $5 processing free. So for a whopping $15 I get a full day of music. What a great deal!!
A coworker already told me I suck, because I got tickets and they have not.
Thanks Seth and Sir Richard!!
-

can i come to your job and tell you you will not be paid for what you do. if you say no . . . then you are a ripoff artist. do you really think the process of what ticketmaster does (printing of tickets/running the website/paying phone staph, etc...) is all done for free?
-
ah, shut up.

you're not my employer so come on down to my place and tell me i wont be paid ;D and who cares what it takes to run ticketmaster. has nothing to do with what we're talking about. go take a walk and find something else to comment on.

-

That means nothing as far as your tickets are concerned. GA is GA. I think it's just an indicator of how many tickets have been sold. The higher that number, the greater number of tickets. I think that's how it works anyway.
-
it's funny Seth kept mentioning in the radio interview over and over no fees what so ever free is free no hidden charges. The only fee would be for mailing tickets. Now I'm hearing people getting charged for the will call tickets. Nice ;D
-
I just got my confirmation email and it doesn't say anything about an extra 5$. ???
-
Hi all! I am as stocked about this event as the rest of you.
When I ordered my WILL CALL tickets with $10 (2x$5) donation, I too was charged an "ORDER PROCESSING FEE". >:(
I promptly called Ticketmaster and within a half hour received a call saying it was a programming error, I would be refunded the $5 and the situation has been corrected in the system.
Like most of you, if the extra $5 went to charity, I am cool with it....but this event was "not for profit" and I would be DAMNED if Ticketmaster would profit from this.
Anyhoo, check your accounts if you were "overcharged". ;)
And MUCH THANKS to all involved for putting this FREE event together. ;D
-
the rest of the world - "a free concert with those bands? five dollars for processing? wow. thank you very much!!"
here - "a free concert? five dollars for processing? fucking rip off artists. fuck them!!"
not whining here. i got my tickets for (almost) free, i'm going, i'm happy. but this has nothing to do with the value of the show, i think it's fantastic that they're putting this on for free. if tickets were $20, i would've paid. it's about a not so small computer glitch from a company with a long history of consistently being inconsistent and charging only a certain amount of people and made them a nice little profit. donate it to charity i say!
-
Excellent.
Thanks for letting us know!

Guys who didn't get tickets I think it's now sold out I went back for shits and giggles to get some tickets and now none are coming up.

thanks for the heads up! will do. 8)
Excellent.

Anyhoo, check your accounts if you were "overcharged". ;)
And MUCH THANKS to all involved for putting this FREE event together. ;D
-
I hope one of the places I already volunteer counts as a "designated youth shelter."
How about helping freshmen move into their dorms the week of the show ;D ? Arthwys?
I'm not going anyway. I only have so much time for concerts; The Flaming Lips are the night before and I'd rather see them than anybody on the fest lineup.
-
the rest of the world - "a free concert with those bands? five dollars for processing? wow. thank you very much!!"
here - "a free concert? five dollars for processing? fucking rip off artists. fuck them!!"
not whining here. i got my tickets for (almost) free, i'm going, i'm happy. but this has nothing to do with the value of the show, i think it's fantastic that they're putting this on for free. if tickets were $20, i would've paid. it's about a not so small computer glitch from a company with a long history of consistently being inconsistent and charging only a certain amount of people and made them a nice little profit. donate it to charity i say!
i agree with this sentiment and as I said earlier, had I known about the $5 fee up front I would have gone ahead and added the additional donation today...
now lets move on to having a great day of music and hope Seth can book other festivals along these lines at MPP in the future, free or not...
-
So, did anyone order the tickets to be mailed, and get them without being charged at all?
Just curious if this glitch went the other way too.
-
Guys who didn't get tickets I think it's now sold out I went back for shits and giggles to get some tickets and now none are coming up.
Yes I know, I've been trying for the past 10 minutes and cant get any.
FUCK. if anyone picked up some extra tickets and would be willing to help a fellow forumer out, please let me know!
-
Doesn't that just mean the presale is sold out?
Try again on Saturday?
-
Well how many tickets do the offer in the presale? anyone know?
-
I always thought pre-sales were just a portion of the total tickets. Meaning that allotment has sold out, but the festival itself has not.
-
Needing more than two, I used my wife's account to get a second pair, and chose mail for her order (she's rarely in DC). I was thinking it was $5 per order, but iwas actually $5 per ticket.
So, did anyone order the tickets to be mailed, and get them without being charged at all?

-
My friend and I both got through half an hour ago. We each ordered 2 will call tickets and there was no charge. They didn't even ask for a credit card, just basic info and we got order confirmation email.

Ah, well, I had read somewhere yesterday that it would be $5 per ticket, so I was prepared for that.
-
so does anyone have any idea how many tix were used for the presale? guess i have to try regular onsale this saturday.
-
I didn't get to participate this morning so I hope I won't have any problems Saturday morning. Cannot fathom that the presale had more than 20% of the total tix but then again I'm trying to be optimistic.
Glad things went well for everybody that got in on this. Sounds like things went mostly without a hitch so thanks are due to the folks who put this together.

I was able to get 2 will call tickets as well --- they did not take my credit card info -- will this be a problem? Everything I read says that the credit card used will be needed at will call...... anyone know?
-
yay for scalpers.
-
Come on, did anyone not expect to see these tickets scalped for $50+?

Can someone please give me the pre-sale code for this Virgin Mobile Fest please? :)
Thanks
Megan

Pre-sale's over.
Can someone please give me the pre-sale code for this Virgin Mobile Fest please? :)

Weezer is having their pre-sale tomorrow for tix for those on their mailing list.
-
I was under the impression that all tickets were up for grabs today, and Saturday was just whatever was leftover.
That's why I made a big push today instad of waiting.
But I'm probably totally wrong, right?
-
Yes, but then you'd have to get email from Weezer. That would suck.

Yeah, they have to give the general public a crack at most of the tickets. As posted earlier, this morning's allocation was most likely really small.

I think today was a pretty small allotment.
However, I am curious as to how quickly this thing will sell out. Theoretically, people who only like one band at this thing could still want to "buy" tickets. So you could have a whole bunch of fanbases wanting tickets to this thing.
-
Or the "I'm going because it's free" category. There's actually only one band in the bunch that I've ever paid money to see, and only three of which I actually own albums by. But hell, it's free. We'll go and see two or three bands and leave.

Yes, exactly. Even if you only want to see some random dance tent guy, it's hard to argue with free.
-
Yes, but then you'd have to get email from Weezer. That would suck.

so who are you looking forward to seeing Charlie? obviously not Weezer or Blink.
-
Good to know that Weezer is distributing tickets, too. That further dilutes the ticket pool come Saturday. Is Blink having one, too? If they are, many may be tempeted to join up on those sites to potentially avoid the mad scramble on Saturday.
Edit: the Weezer site sent out their password already.
-
In order of preference:
Hold Steady
The National
Franz Ferdinand
maybe St Vincent
maybe Mates of State
My wife might actually like Weezer and Jet a bit (cough cough), but I know she likes those first three more.
My two year old would probably prefer anything in the dance tent.
Hoping to cut out before the headliners go on, guessing that Franz mihgt be a second stage headliner, so would have to miss them.
And you Sonic?
Any chance anybody else gets added?
Yes, but then you'd have to get email from Weezer. That would suck.

in order
Pete Tong
Holy Fuck
Franz Ferdinand
Public Enemy
St. Vincent
The National
Wale, i may check out.
I would avoid Jet at all costs, seen em twice and ewww. same with Bravery.
I wouldnt mind seeing Weezer either.
i ususally run into so many people i know at these places, i miss half of what i want to see anyway though.
looking for additions...i dont know, as it is, 6-7 bands on each stage sounds about right.

This bit from the Baltimore Sun would offer possible evidence that I'm not "wrong again"...(not sure when I was wrong the firsttime)
Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster in two waves. Today and Friday, Virgin Mobile customers and concertgoers who attended one or more of the past three Virgin Mobile festivals will get the chance to earmark one of the 35,000 available spots at the Aug. 30 festival.
Ticketmaster will send out e-mails to past Virgin Mobile festival customers offering them the chance to reserve no more than two tickets each.
The remaining tickets will be up for grabs at 10 a.m. Saturday through Ticketmaster.com. In a rare gesture, Ticketmaster is waiving its notorious "convenience fees" if customers opt to pick up their tickets at the 9:30 Club in Washington or Merriweather. Otherwise, there will be a $5 fee for ticket delivery.

Hmm...
I know of a few people who will be upset if this is true.
-
However, this from about an hour ago in the Sun, would indicate some for Saturday.
Ticketmaster customers snapped up thousands of presale tickets for the Virgin Mobile FreeFest less than an hour after they were made available Thursday morning, festival organizers said.
Rock bands Weezer, Blink-182 and Franz Ferdinand and hip-hop group Public Enemy will headline a downsized Virgin Mobile Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Aug. 30.
The festival, formerly a two-day affair held at the sprawling Pimlico Race Course, has been scaled back to one day, and moved to the smaller Columbia amphitheater. To accommodate the Virgin Mobile Freefest, Merriweather will be outfitted with multiple stages and a dance tent and expanded to hold nearly 35,000. Other performers include Jet, Girl Talk, the Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Taking Back Sunday and more.
The tickets, offered to previous festival-goers and Virgin Mobile customers through a password-protected presale, were free if picked up at Merriweather Post Pavilion or the 9:30 Club in Washington between Aug. 21 and Aug. 28. Standard delivery cost $5, and each order had a limit of two tickets.
The general public will get the chance to vie for the remaining tickets at 10 a.m. Saturday through Ticketmaster.
-
The ticketmaster page says this:
The presale is "freed" out! Additional tickets will be available to the general public on Sat 6/27 at 10am.
So it looks like the pre-sale wasn't all the tickets.
-

Since when the hell does "pre-sale" mean all the tickets are for sale...?
-
It all comes down to however many tickets are being earmarked for the various pre-sales. There will certainly be some available Saturday....could be a thousand.....could be ten thousand. Who knows.....
-
Since when is a major music festival in the mid-Atlantic free?
I was under the impression that all tickets were up for grabs today, and Saturday was just whatever was leftover.

So you really think that they would give a password for only those who have gone in previous yearsm call it a pre-sale and then put all the tickets up for grabs during that pre-sale WHILE advertising the on 'free' date as Saturday.
I see how that is confusing...
-
I'm guessin' in this time of twitter, facebook, etc it was be a PR disaster to not have a very sizable chunk of tickets available to the general public. Hoppus of Blink 182 alone has 716K of followers on twitter and it wouldn't take much to get them mobilized.
-
Also a lot of people were posting the password on FB. Douchers.
-
Presales are often 10% of all available tickets, some serious noobs around here
-
nobody will be charged anything for Will Call, as promised...if there was a mistake it will be corrected
you do have to pick up your tickets 8/21-27...this is to prevent tickets from floating around to be scalped...tickets will not mailed out by TicketMaster until then either
unclaimed tickets will be released to the public after that
-
I've got no idea how many tickets were released today but I do know that Taylor Swift's Merriweather visit 'sold-out' during the pre-sale events that began that Thursday. The general public sale was at 10AM that Saturday but I kept getting the 'can't find any tickets' screen during my attempts on Saturday at 10AM on.....

Thats because Taylor Swift does very well on the secondary market so scalpers are all over her shows. Are you people serious or am I just not in on the joke?
-
You don't think scalpers like the looks of free tickets that they can turn around and sell?
I'm not saying it happened, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Seth can you tell us roughly how many tickets (maybe the %) were given away in the presale?
Or at least tell us that there will be tickets on saturday available?

I was charged a $5 processing fee.
Seat location: section GAX5
Total Charge: US $ 5.00

i am going to try to get a ticket on sat. if i do, i will give it away for free (no postage or processing fee either) to a regular 930 forumer who doesn't have luck.

I'm not saying it happened, but it wouldn't surprise me.
What I meant was that with so many scalpers trying, people that try for tickets every day, they were faster than the average buyer so it would appear that a show like Taylor Swift had no tickets for sale during the regular sale when in fact, there were plenty, just bought up quickly.
-
As Seth said, that will be corected.

LOL NO! Jesus Christ. The point being that all of these scalpers were a lot faster than you!

there will be tickets available saturday
I don't want to get into how many were released for presale vs public because neither side will be happy

Did you go to an outlet (do they even have those anymore...lol)? I will tell you that when I worked in White FLint as a TM Agent (Cust Svc Desk for the mall) I could pull and print about 50-100 tickets in a minute if everyone was paying cash. Believe me if you were online the tix easily could be gone before you finish putting in teh code.

i got my tickets at 10:10 this morning. pretty painless.
sonick, can't say that i share your excitement about wale. saw him once, and he was awful. i'm fairly confident he's gotten better, tho, since he's starting from such a low point...
Did he ask you to get him some tickets too? ;D
no, but now i'm kinda insulted that he didn't. a scalper AND puts me on his B list?!? what a fink!
-
Nope, that's the option I chose and I had to pay the $5 processing fee. Which I'm fine with.
So are they randomly charging some people? Bizarre.
It's free if you just do will call. It was the 5th or 6th option down.

Seth just said in this thread that you won't have to pay. Meaning, if you did, you'll get the money back.

I bought the Karma Package for 2 (With T-shirt) and a 3 day delivery at $70, whatever, it's better than like freaking 175.
The tickets itself should be $0.00 of course, I just made a donation and payed shipping with t-shirts.
I bought my tickets at 10:05. Painless. Easy. Done.
-
Sorry -- didn't get through all of the new 8 pages of posts before I noted I'd been charged the $5 for will call.
Regarding Craigslist & Ebay, I think there will end up being a lot of tickets available for free. Think about it; nearly everyone interested is going in and getting two tickets. There will be extras. My group of concert-going friends all got 2 tickets today; I'll bet we end up with several extras we give out (usually giving first dibs to forum folks).
Everyone chillax!!! And thanks to VFest folks for this cool event...

Yes it is expensive, the free shipping relates to sending the tickets a few days before the festival.
But the shipping I bought ($15), it a 3-day business delivery.
There's many options to shipping, it's just that if you want it to be free, then just do the few days before festival option.

I got the free/$5 shipping, because I don't think there's really a point in getting it shipped ASAP. The concert isn't in three days, so I can wait until a few days before to get my ticket in the mail.
I swear the TM page said tickets wouldn't ship at all until the week before. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

WAIT, SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM this!
That means that ticketmaster just gyped $20 of my payment...
-
Well, the ticketmaster page says tickets will be shipped "at a later date." I thought someone posted in this thread that they'd be shipped closer to the event to avoid scalping.
Either way, I just don't understand the rush in wanting them mailed in three days. As long as they get to me before the 30th, I couldn't care less how long it takes. I guess if you need to get the ticket sent to someone else ASAP, I can understand, but I can't think of any other situations where it's that necessary.

Yeah, I'm buying two tickets to give 1 ticket to my friend.
I just called a lady at the local service @ ticketmaster, and said that the tickets will be sent to me in 3 days, so problem solved!

I hope that's the case for you, but that's not normally how it works. Normally the fast shipping choice is just the method they use once they get around to mailing them. It's not a guarantee that they'll ship them immediately. They may hold the tickets for a month, but when they do get around to shipping them, they'd use 3-day delivery.
-
I hope it is the case for me, otherwise it's badddd.
-
So, any bets as to how quickly these tickets will be gone tomorrow morning?
I'm thinking they'll easily be gone in an hour. More likely, they'll be gone quicker.
-
by a couple of days
-
and the tension mounts.
is it me (on a side note) or why hasn't the mbv show sold out yet?
-
dont know man, its on the front page of TM, so they're trying to sell it out.
-
and the tension mounts.
is it me (on a side note) or why hasn't the mbv show sold out yet?
The National never sells out shows that quickly. Tickets will still be available for that show up until a week before the show probably. This has been the case for all major acts that have played there.
-
so has anyone tried scoring tix for v-fest today? i cant get them, i'm already getting "no tix available" page.
-
holy crap, SOLD OUT!! :o
-
jesus. wasnt expecting it to go THAT fast.
-
three minutes and gone. sold out at 1003
i think it is safe to say, only scalpers got them. two ticket limit, for as large as merriweather is for a ga show and three minutes?
-
i got two (SWEET!) but i got confused and did the will call...shit..
can i still get them at the 930 club or does that mean only at the merriweather?? that could be terrible
-
wtf?
-
got 2
-
Man, this is rough. Still shut out so far. :(
-
That was messed up. I got tickets reserved and then got to the ticketmaster log in to my account page and it kept giving me an error.
-
stubhub - $35 to $700
ebay - $25 to $50
-

jeezus I can't even buy good karma. I'm SOL.
-
wow it's all gone?? i can't even get past the identify the words part. At least I got some tickets from Thurs.
-
Got in...went to claim the tix and ticketmaster booted me out. By the time I got back in they were gone.
Unbelievable.....

That was messed up. I got tickets reserved and then got to the ticketmaster log in to my account page and it kept giving me an error.
always log in first!
It said I was logged in, but it wanted me to confirm my password

yeah, thats the same thing it did to me Crow. I wonder how they will release the unclaimed tickets after 8/28. With they go back on ticketmaster or do you go pick them up?
-
there are going to be LOTS of tickets floating around before the show - i doubt that every scalper read the fine print about when they are going to be mailed out and/or the will-call rules & dates. hang tight kiddies, you will be going to the show. this was inevitable - of course the scum were going to jump all over free - like spam, it costs next to nothing so any money made on this is an infinite rate of return.
seth, THANK YOU for the presale! i'm very grateful for the opportunity to have gotten my tix on thursday and avoid this mess.
by a couple of days
you were saying... ::)
i got two (SWEET!) but i got confused and did the will call...shit..
can i still get them at the 930 club or does that mean only at the merriweather?? that could be terrible
you can pick them up at the club
-
Damn scalpers and their programs had a field day with it this morning. Look for tons of shit on craiglist and ebay

oh good...
I have to say I did get in quick this time.. Thanks Seth for doing this...
Have to also say that the main band I'm interested in- interested in enough to want to go- is Franz Ferdinand.. I saw their first show at the 930 Club and it was real good.. and I love their new album...in fact I've got that No you girls song in my head right now... I'm also interested in St. Vincent...
-
Almost 30 minutes in. This is looking hopeless.
I can't believe I missed the pre-sale because of my endoscopy. Just my luck.
I hope you're right, sweetcell.

there's one seller on stubhub with 50 tickets. 50!!

disgusting. >:(
-
i love how it asks me to select best available or any price when it's all GA and FREE!!! I know, it's just a canned program but pisses me off each time! Damn this was total BS! so, is it sold out? if so, why doesn't TM say?
-
Has anyone else who is still trying snagged tickets yet?

TM never advertises "sold out" on any shows (or at least i've never seen it do that before). If you're getting the screen that says "sorry, we couldnt find the tickets you wanted", then yeah thats how you know.
-
Has anyone else who is still trying snagged tickets yet?
I know a few ppl who got them this morning, but I wasn't one of them.
-
still trying, but getting the "no exact matches found..."
-
I think by this point if people can't pull up tickets then it's sold out.
-

you can get them at the club too, but i know that there is a certain time frame that you have to pick them up by or they will release them to the public.
-
I'm sorry that everyone did not get what they wanted.
-
I'm just curious to know what the hell kind of program these scalpers uses to get all these tickets. I can barely get past the word identifier thing without messing up at least once.
-
The last free show I couldn't get tickets to was the DC 101 holiday show at the 9:30 club a year or two ago. The free show cost me $80 for two tickets on CL. It was still worth it.

when is the last day to pick them up the tickets at will-call from 930?
edit: pick up is in August?
-
Will Call orders may be picked up at MPP or 9:30 Club box offices, but not tickets without a pre-existing order. Will Call pickup dates are Fri 8/21 10am - Fri 8/28 9pm. Unclaimed will call will be released to the general public after 8/28!
-
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but people like me who got shut out should heed the advice others have given. Tickets will pop up. Grab 'em when you can.
Hope to see you there.
-
Guys! There are many opportunities to get your tickets before the festival. You have 2 months to get organized, and just order from ticket scalping websites, or just drive to pavilion to buy from a random stranger.
-
Those craigslist ads are just ridiculous haha. However, I do see a lot of people that want tickets are willing to pay whatever for them. Must be blink fans. ;D
-
I've been looking at some ads for fun, and saw that some people are much nicer than the people at stubhub. People are selling their tickets at around $15 (for 2 tickets!!). I think that is a steal even though it is a freefest. But for the people that are desperately needing one (as I would be if I didn't have them) here's your blessing! I will not post link for various reasons. Just look around.
Enjoy!

i'm curious if the "price raping" will begin when people show up at the venue on the day of the show? i.e., $20 to park, double the normal cost of food/drinks, pay to pee, etc...... this is what happened at many venues when "free" ozzfest rolled around the country in 2007.
-
There is still the chance to win Free.I.P tickets for doing volunteer work.
And one would have to think there are going to be ticket giveaways and raids in the offing.
-
I get my tickets like 10:02 a.m and roommate get his about the same time on his laptop

I believe parking at the venue is going to be free. If not the mall is free either way.
I also don't expect Merriweather the increase prices on food/drinks.

20 dollar beers

1. If there's going to be a price raping, then people should start buying tickets now as they go cheap. And there IS going to be a price raping.
2. Later starting June 29th i think, you can win VIP tickets (just vip seating) by doing 13 hours of community service at posted homeless youth areas.
3. Parking is FREE.
4. I heard during richard branson's interview with jimmy fallon that he might arrange free flights (virgin america) from the west coast to the east. But I think that's too far fetched, or I didn't hear right.
5. Food prices should be same. same with drinks
6. The difference between Free.I.P. tickets and the GA tickets is the seating, that's it.
-
Fuck that.
Anyone who pays anything for these tickets is part of the problem. And buying from random strangers near Merriweather will not happen; I'm sure security will insure that. If any tickets will change hands on the day of near the venue, it'll be for nothing.

Yeah I know, it's been a rough 3 days for everyone. I think the problem about these free shows is the control. I don't know who to blame: TM, VM, the people, or no one at all. There were people who were Virgin Mobile customers, and past festival attendees, who never got an email or a hint about the presale on Thursday. Plus, I was looking around in google today, international or not, many forums were spreading the password amongst themselves for the morning presale. There were people who never even heard of Virgin Mobile festival, and they got their hands on the password, and successfully purchased their tickets on that morning. And yes, you are correct about the security ensuring that no one exchanges tickets near the pavilion.
The only hope is to purchase them online, but that does indeed ruin the fun of a "Freefest." So it all comes down to this: Scalpers having their field day, sweeping the tickets, and people are supposed to pay money for "Free" festival. Down right disgusting.
-
How can you think of blaming anyone? It's a free fucking concert with 20 bands, at least half of which could get 20 bucks a ticket on their own tour. Of course come scalpers got their hands on some, why is that so fucking surprising? I'm so sick of the same old whine-fest every time a show sells out.
There were only 38,000 tickets people. And for the most part, they were free. Of course they were going to be gone in an instant.
Sorry you didn't get your tickets, but enough with the crying already. Either pony up and get some on the secondary market, take your chances at the venue or hope you get lucky and someone give you their extra. Otherwise, enough with the crying already.

Chaz, I think you read my post wrong. I said "who's to blame: "no one at all"" I was implying that statement. And my previous post before my last one, I said that this kind of activity always happens since it is the nature of scalpers. And, I'm not whining about anything, I successfully got my tickets in the presale on Thursday, so I don't know what you are talking about. I'm relating my last post to the other people, saying that there are many opportunities to get the tickets before August 30th.

1. If there's going to be a price raping, then people should start buying tickets now as they go cheap. And there IS going to be a price raping.
Actually I disagree. Tickets right now are probably at their most expensive. Scalpers are trying to sell tickets; as time progresses and they still have tickets, they'll lower their prices a bit to get rid of them. What you see for like 40 dollars now will be like 20 in august. They wont get more expensive.
Its what happened with Radiohead last year. I purchased scalped tickets the day after they went on sale and paid i think 170 a ticket (for pit). As time progressed, that price lowered, and the week of the event, it was at maybe 80 or 90 a ticket. I should have waited :-/ .

That's a good point. As time reaches August 30th, scalpers will be desperate to sell tickets at a lower price, or they may go to the festival themselves haha. The reason why was because last years V-mobile festival, the prices were jacked up in Stubhub for VIP/GA tickets. It was about a 100-200 price increase for most tickets, and they were sold at the end.
-
So all the tickets are gone? I cant change the number of tickets on any of them except 1 and I tried those and it loaded and said their were none left. I wanted to get some more but eh. I guess not.
-
Definitely wait to buy tickets..I've seen this repeatedly on Epay.. As the show gets closer the prices go down and by the last day its a buyers market....
Everybody stay cool. There's 35,000 tickets and its not a particularly great lineup. Moreover, we know a lot of the tickets were taken by people that don't even intend to use them!

Yes, the tickets are free, so people are only resulting in buying them for cheap prices, so the scalpers will be forced to lower prices by the date of the event. If the tickets were like $100, it would be the only way around, but not all the time.
Everyone, it's okay, there's more opportunities to get your hands on the tickets! I think I've said this a million times. :.

I really can't believe anyone's shocked that this sold out so quickly, and that they're being scalped. Even if scalpers have to sell them for less than $20, it's still (mostly) all profit.
That being said, I'm still amazed it sold out that quickly. I didn't try for any this morning, but the people I know who did got nothing.
Sadly, there really isn't much Seth could have done, short of making sales in person only. But there would have been complaints either way.
I'm just glad I was able to get two on Thursday. I'll just exchange the second for a ride home afterwards, and I'm good to go!

It was pretty damn fast, but people will go crazy over the word "free" than "$175" anyday.

I was definitely expecting them to be gone within half an hour, but I figured they'd be easily obtainable if you were online right at 10.
Guess not.

Wait, people couldn't get theirs at exactly 10? That's weird, because I logged in at exactly 10 on thursday to get mine, and i did.

Yea, I got mine, as did a few friends, at ten on thursday, but everyone I know that logged on at ten on Saturday was unable to get anything.

no, lots of people got tickets right at 10. i think it was 10:03 or 10:04 when it sold out.
you guys also have to factor in that blink and weezer were also having pre-sales of their own. so that took a big chunk of tickets from the pot as well.
-

Wait, were Blink 182 and Weezer having a dual set together scheduled for August 30th originally, and had their own presale? And then V mobile freefest incorporated with 182/weezer, and then had that presale on thursday?
-
there will be tickets available saturday
I don't want to get into how many were released for presale vs public because neither side will be happy
So was there a lot that was released for presale then there was for the actual sale? Oh yeah I think people who bought in previous years never got passwords from ticketmaster, well that was in my case. I think just people who signed up for the alerts on the virgin site got passwords. Either way I got mine yay ;D

I'm thinking the same, because I read in a report that people who attended last years festival didn't get theirs. BUT, I did go last year, and I did get the email for the password, BUT AGAIN, I signed up for the festival updates email listing. But it should be the people who are returning goers and Virgin Mobile customers, because that's whats stated in the email. Maybe it is a glitch, who knows, the control for free festivals like these are nearly impossible to handle, unless all ticket directions are in one way such as just a designated will call, but that could be hectic as well.
Since Seth stated that neither side would be unhappy, I'm thinking too that there's were a LOT of tickets in the presale. And a somewhat amount on Saturday. What about the Blink 182 and Weezer Presales? I think they've had one too, unless it was on Thursday 10 am too.
-
The only full proof way for everyone to get tickets without scalpers getting in the way is a will call only enter immediately set up. That is impossible however with 38,000 people. This setup with a pre-sale was the best case scenario. The password was on the internet if you took ten minutes to look and everyone I know who did the pre-sale at 10 got tickets.
-
The password shouldn't have been **********, because it was the same damn generic code for every year. Make the passwords UNIQUE, that would've removed most, if not all, problems.

Moreover, we know a lot of the tickets were taken by people that don't even intend to use them!
but, but this creates a slightly perverse incentive for scalpers... if they can't sell their tickets, it's no (or very little) skin of their noses. if they paid even $20 for tickets, they'd want to recoup that so they've be desperate to sell it for something. free = don't care if it goes unsold... i strongly suspect there will not be 35k (or 38k, or whatever the number of tickets) people at the festival.

I'm thinking come Aug 30th, there's going to be a whole lot of free fest tickets in trash cans across this country.
-
I'm still ticketless, but we only have one thing left to predict: the set times! Here's my lame attempt at predicting the set times, assuming that no one else is being added to the free show. What do you all think?
Stage 1
8:20 - 10:00 - Blink 182
6:25 - 7:55 - Weezer
4:45 - 6:00 - Public Enemy
3:05 - 4:20 - Jet
1:45 - 2:40 - The Bravery
12:30 - 1:20 - Hold Steady
Stage 2
8:35 - 10:00 - Franz Ferdinand
6:45 - 8:05 - Girl Talk
5:10 - 6:20 - The National
3:45 - 4:45 - Taking Back Sunday
2:25 - 3:20 - Mates of State
1:15 - 2:05 - St. Vincent
12:15 - 12:55 - Wale
Dance Tent (honestly, I have no idea who is most popular. Feel free to correct me!)
8 - 10 - Lee Burridge
6 - 8 - Danny Howells
3 - 5:30 - Pete Tong
1 - 2:30 - Holy Fuck
-
I think you'll see Girl Talk close the second stage with public enemy right before them. FF, Weezer, Blink all on the main stage.
-

Hmm, that makes more sense and reminds me of the NIN vs. Kanye split last year.

Sir Richard Branson said in Jimmy Fallon's interview that you have to do 13 HOURS of community service at selected US homeless posts. And if you complete it and get that time card in, then you get VIP tickets, which mean by seating only.
If you are in the West coast, at some time, branson arranged flights for some people. So get ready!

i can hear it now, during blink's set: "like oh my god alexis . . . i actually had to touch a homeless person just to get here."
-
13 hours of community service is not a lot at all. For anyone bitching about not getting tickets, and not wanting to pay for them, just do that.
Do "VIPs" have to sit in the specified section?

in their cars

anyone get the karma package?

anyone get the karma package?
I did! you hhave a question?
I actually do not know if you are supposed to sit in that section, but I'm like 100% sure that you can just leave and hang around the GA area.
-
The story at USA Today says it's 8 hours of volunteering to get a GA ticket, or 13 hours for a VIP one:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2009-06-29-freefest-volunteerism_N.htm
And it looks like signup for volunteering has started:

Virgin Mobile is also organizing volunteer projects in Philadelphia, Boston and New York where two free I.P. tickets will be given to folks donating the most time above 13 hours. Winners will also get a free bus ride to the festival by way of the event?s official bus line, Megabus.
Youth homeless organizations working with the festival include Bridge Over Troubled Waters in Boston; Green Chimneys in NYC; Help USA in Philadelphia; StandUP For Kids in Baltimore and Sasha Bruce in D.C.
?Once again, the folks at Virgin have come up with an idea that is so simple and wonderful, it reminds us we need people from outside the concert industry to take a fresh look,? said I.M.P. chairman Seth Hurwitz. ?The idea of offering people the opportunity to do charity work in exchange for concert tickets is truly inspiring, and I am going to look for ways to do that the rest of the year. Why not use our power to give??

In addition to this post, for the people in the Baltimore/DC area, you're in luck, kind of. There are 230 tickets to hand out, and all you have to do is fill out your information and your schedule. And of course do the 13 hours. You're volunteer supervisor will check your hours weekly, so there's no cheating, since they check online.
Get to it!
-
It would be ironic if in reality there was really only like a thousand free tickets to get online but the majority of the tickets are with people who volunteer and what not. So that they actually get a shit load of people to do all that volunteer work, 34,000 of them. All for a free show and to help the needy. ;D

I'm thinking the same, because I read in a report that people who attended last years festival didn't get theirs. BUT, I did go last year, and I did get the email for the password, BUT AGAIN, I signed up for the festival updates email listing.
We didn't. We didn't get the presale code, and we haven't got a single email from Virgin Fest on 4 email addresses. Not for the website opening, not for the regular sale, not for anything. I contacted Virgin and they gave me the email they said they 'sent' the code to, which it was not at, nor in the spam folder. I also was online Saturday at 10am in the hopes of making up for the presale and never got through. I wouldn't mind doing community service for even a regular ticket, but I live 4 hours south of DC...so that's out.
Since I see that people on Ebay have tickets for sale in quantities of 10 and above, I can only feel that former customers got shafted, and scalpers just got a shitload of free inventory with no overhead. If I even were close by to do the volunteering, how can I trust a company to get it right when so far, they haven't? I'm not complaining about not getting something for free, I was planning on paying for tickets this year, and even tried the donation option. But don't promote that you are doing a favor for former customers, when it really was just an internet free-for-all (literally).
-
Needing more than two, I used my wife's account to get a second pair, and chose mail for her order (she's rarely in DC). I was thinking it was $5 per order, but iwas actually $5 per ticket.
Thanks for going beyond the max limit of 2, that was really thoughtful for the other people that didn't get any.

It really was. On thursday, it didn't even feel like it was a presale for previous festival goers, and current Virgin Mobile customers. It was a free for all for everyone, and if you are going to make the festival free, don't make the password FESTER again.... That's kind of common sense, and instead to prevent all this scalper crap. In the presale, give unique passwords to each person invited, AND, make the rest of them for grabs on Saturday. And every other ticket make it available for will calls, nothing else.

It's only been a couple of days, it's not really a dead horse.

total dead horse.
it's free. they tried their best. not everyone will be happy... such is life.
i haven't been to vfest in 2 years, but i did sign up for the e-mail on the festival's website and got the e-mail. the system worked. sounds like you were the victim of a glitch. either that, or seth personally hates you and manually removed you from the database. yeah, that's it.
We didn't. We didn't get the presale code, and we haven't got a single email from Virgin Fest on 4 email addresses.
maybe your ISP labeled it as spam and it never got through to you at all... sounds like a possibility.

sweetcell = adorable voice of reason. ;)
-
Not to mention there's this incredible new invention called Google. All you had to do was type "v-fest presale code" into it and it would just give you the code....for free!
I never signed up for anything, but was able to get the code with minimal effort. Maybe if you hadn't have acted like a helpless bystander you would have gotten tickets. Try harder next time.

There had been chatter about the festival all year in this forum and undoubtedly others. Somehow, enough people found out about it to snag 35K tickets in minutes. Perhaps it's time to, uh, tap some wires, get connected, keep up with scene, etc.

Seth,
Is there any word on the Ticketmaster $5 'processing fee' refunds? Nothing has been credited to my card yet. I would rather give my $5 to charity than to Abe Pollin's bank account.

does abe polin own merriweather?

No, but I believe he is the local franchise owner of Ticketmaster.

Seth,

are you sure you were charged in the first place after all was said & done?
-
Wow is right.
Julian is like some psychotic sheepherder.
For Seth's and other club affiliates' sake, I'll keep the detailed elaboration on that thought to myself.
In the meantime, I'm sure that about everyone here has full trust in Seth. It's those slimey Ticketbastards and the principle of the thing that Driveway is concerned about.
-
I'm just saying the man gave you a "free" festival. It's not really my thing, but whatever, some of you folks seem to like it. I would think you all could show some appreciation by either (a) not bitching about $5, or (b) bitching to ticketmaster's customer service number, not Seth who has NO CONTROL over ticketmaster.
I guess if ticketmaster had a messageboard so the fat and lazy could misguidedly fire missives from the comfort of their couch, dear Seth wouldn't endure such indignities.
-
I was charged $5 for the free option. Last time I looked it hadn't ben refunded yet. I have no issues at all if that $5 goes to charity. However if it goes to ticketmaster, I would like my money back.

Also, Sweets, you keep coming up as a suggested add on facebook. Idk how that works exactly, but it brings a smile to my heart everytime.
-
heh, add away if you feel like it... dunno how wide you like to cast your social networking net. i assume i'm suggested because we have common friends. i'm not particularly smitten with FB but i do post an occasional thought, link or a pic. plenty of wedding pix linked from my page (might need to hit "view older links" at this point), so you can decide for yourself what the JA score of the non-Wang dress was.
-
Actually we have zero shared friends.
I have no idea how we're "recommended" but I love you all the same. Still not adding you, because I only have like 20 people and want to keep it that way, but much love.

Exactly. $5 isn't going to break my back. However, I would think that if ticketmaster is not being honest, the concert organizers might want to know about it... I have trust in Seth and all things IMP.
I was indeed charged by ticketmaster and I'm sure I'm not alone. It is on my credit card statement.

I think no-one is bitching about the $5. I think it's due to the fact that the officials said that the festival was going to be free. So it's matter of being betrayed, no matter how much the value, either if it were 0.01 or a million dollars. They just don't to give the five dollars to ticketmaster, because they really have no affiliations with the festival itself, and would be satisfied if the money went to charity instead of a ticket company. But didn't ticketmaster say that it was a glitch in the system? If it was meant to be free, then they should give you the money, or lawsuits would be flinging left and right.
The people who chose to do will call gets to get the tickets free. The people who chose the free option online without the donation get the tickets free. The rest pay a 5 dollar donation, if thats what you guys are talking about.
Whatever, I'm confused.!
-
It's our understanding that Ticketmaster has gone through the orders that were mistakenly charged and refunded their money. The situation should be rectified at this time. If you do not see the credit to your card please feel free to call Ticketmaster at (800) 551-7328 to inquire about the status of your refund. Or if you would rather send an e-mail to human@930.com with your order number and contact information we will look into it for you.

Lurker for awhile... first post
I hope it hasn't been said elsewhere, but is there any speculation about what the schedule will be now that we know who is on what stage?
-
I think Seth has it set up where all the bands will be playing simultaneously
-
I think Seth has it set up where all the bands will be playing simultaneously
Really? I was hoping there would be multiple bands performing on the same stage at the same time...
-
I'm thinking that having all the bands on one large stage playing simultaneously would be way cool. Of course it would be easily just to have Girl Talk do it by himself ;)
25 individual stages would mean everyone is assured of seeing their favorite band...
-
Are you on the vfest tweeter feed? You should be if you need tickets...
-
Crap, i was out of the country when all this happened :(
Guess i'll wait until a day or two before and try craigslist. Gotta see The Hold Steady and The National

And i dont have a twitter or really know what it is, but can you post a link to the feed? If theres tickets on there i might have to sign up

Virgin Free For All (http://www.pollstar.com/blogs/news/archive/2009/07/16/679581.aspx)
You already know the Virgin Mobile FreeFest is, well, free. But did you know there?s more to the destination festival featuring Weezer, blink-182, Public Enemy and Franz Ferdinand than free admission?
Turns out there will be a lot of freebies at the one-day-only event scheduled for Aug. 30 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, in Columbia, Md. Free stuff like cell phones, bus rides to the festival, sneakers, sunglasses guitars and even jet transportation.
That?s right. Jet transportation. Although the festival is free, you still need a ticket, and all 35,000 ducats were scooped up only moments after release. However, festival organizers are also giving tickets away to folks willing to donate free time to various youth organizations.
For west coast ?do gooders? Virgin America is providing use of a free plane, called ?FreeFest Express, to fly them to the festival.
But the FreeFest Express is not the only transportation freebie available to festival goers. Megabus is donating the use of a fleet of WiFi-equipped buses which will shuttle folks from Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Like the FreeFest Express, the WiFi buses will be made available to eligible fans who donated their time to homeless youth shelters.
One FreeFest sponsor ? Japan-based mega-company Kyocera ? will give away cell phones. Along with the free mobiles, Virgin Mobile USA will award free cell phone service for life to a lucky few. It all goes down in the Kyocera Lucky Layoff Lounge, which is open to everyone but is offering a few special deals to anyone who can prove they?re jobless.
Gibson Guitars will also be at the FreeFest, giving away free ?Flying V? electric guitars to winners in the Kyocera Lucky Layoff Lounge. Of course, words like ?prizes? and ?winners? indicate some kind of contest, but so far the guitar company hasn?t come clean with any details.
Converse is chipping in with free Chucks sneakers and sunglasses. Converse will also host the ?Punk Your Chucks Design Contest,? where folks who submit winning designs for Chucks will be awarded a year?s supply of the athletic shoes. In case you?re wondering how many pairs of Chucks make up a year?s supply, Converse says 12 pairs per year, which works out to one pair per month in case you?re mathematically challenged.
Official Virgin Mobile FreeFest vehicle sponsor Toyota will offer free Prius test drives to anyone who finds walking around the Merriweather Post a bit too strenuous.
And Sony Computer Entertainment America will give away free content downloads from the PlayStation Network to anyone who brings their PSP to the festival.
We?re not saying everyone attending the Virgin Mobile FreeFest will get all or even some of the freebies listed above. But festival organizers are playing up the ?free? in FreeFest, indicating there will be plenty of opportunities for festival goers to come home with more than they took to the event. Your best bet to stay on top of all the free offerings is to visit the festival Web site on a regular basis.

Sadly, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
I think MJ would have been a shitty choice for a festival act.

wow
let me know how that turns out

still no processing fees refunded after two requests.. i guess this is a win for ticketmaster.
-
"Toyota, official vehicle sponsor of #FreeFest, will offer free Prius "test drives" for fans to shuttle themselves between stages @ the event"
whaaaat. just how far apart are the stages?
-
I like how Seth said not a word about whether VFest 2009 was even happening, but is quick to shut down rumours of a VFest 2010 headliner already being booked (an obviously asinine idea before he even said anything). Maybe he's only commenting on even-numbered years' festivals? Or does he go media incommunicado on August 31st?
-
It better not be Lady Gaga, otherwise it would be Virgin Mobile Ladies Edition Festival.
Is the 2010 headlining book confirmed?
-
So much for that whole free thing with ticketmaster not refunding fees yet. What a joke of a "festival"
-
I got my refund late last week. It is doable. Thanks IMP.
-
If anyone has any last minute changes in their plans and ends up with an extra ticket, please let me know. I've been trying craigslist, but cant find one for under 50 bucks
-
As if this poor people shitfest couldn'e get any worse... Book The Band is back!
Alesana, Black Gold, The Providence, Iglu & Hartly, and The Birthday Massacre are battling it out to see who sucks the least!!
-
hmm I take it you are not going.
-
hmm I take it you are not going.
You have to be shitting me. Was there ever any question?
-
oh I see couldn't get tickets
-
meh to those choices. But it doesn't seem like there is a "hollywood undead" this year, thats always a good thing.
-
Are they still going to release any leftover tickets the weekend of the festival? I really want to go, but like the poster above me, I can't find tickets for under $50.
-
Voting in the book the band contest can result in possibly winning tickets

do NOT pay those stupid prices. as the date draws nearer you should be able to get a ticket for much, much less than that. maybe a boardee will have a change of plans and will be able to hook you up for free. i suspect that the scalpers crawling the parking lot on the day of the show won't be able to ask for much. and some tickets will be released in the days leading up to the festival (i think people have until Aug 28 to pick up their tickets, otherwise they will be re-released).

So is it Sprint Freefest now?
-
That means bad news.... BAD NEWS.
-
Actually on another note, that doesn't look bad. Sprint is helping with Virgin Mobile's economic downfall. But Sprint needs to fix their service before they buy a mobile phone company. I just wonder what it will mean for next years Virgin Mobile festival. But I don't think it will affected as (if it is confirmed) that seth booked a headliner for the 2010 festival.
-
does this now mean that the band's sound will be going in and out through the speakers depending on where the crowd is standing?
-
But I don't think it will affected as (if it is confirmed) that seth booked a headliner for the 2010 festival.
Are you slow or something? He scoffed at the prospect of that in this very thread.
-
But Sprint needs to fix their service before they buy a mobile phone company.
huh? not sure what you're getting at here. not only is sprint already a mobile phone company, they've already bought one: nextel.
agreed that they need to improve their coverage - i'm on sprint, and when it works it's great with super-fast data speeds. but i've got few to no bars in way too many places, like home.
-

It has no effect on anything festival related now or ever other than possibly the name. The festival is a Virgin product. They used the name to advertise the Virgin Mobile service.
-
bkrome: with no real products to speak of in the US what will Virgin be advertising with the festival in future years?
-
Only in 2008 and 2009 was it known as Virgin Mobile Festival. It was simply Virgin Festival in 2006 and 2007.

I got that but with no mobile phone presence, all the megastores closed, barely an airline.... what would Virgin be advertising here in the states?
-
Isn't sprint already the carrier for virgin mobile?
Seems to me they are only getting the existing customer base and brand... And surely Seth can pull off a festival with lots of smaller sponsers lined up
-
Isn't sprint already the carrier for virgin mobile?

Yes, Sprint was already the carrier for Virgin Mobile as well as Boost, which it already owns. Sprint simply bought it's only competitor to Boost (though it was really a sharing arrangement since VM used Sprint's network). Sprint now owns all of the Virtual Network Operators in America with Boost and Virgin Mobile, so this isn't really much of a big deal.
And don't forget about Virgin America, the greatest airline on the planet, when discussing Virgin products and services in America.
-
barely an airline....
I take offense to this.
Los Angeles
Orange County
San Diego
San Francisco
Boston
Las Vegas
New York
Washington, D.C.
Seattle
As soon as they add Chicago and Austin, I'll never have to take another airline to fly in the States again.

Also, you can play old school Doom for free.

Alrighty then, I knew that Sprint purcahsed Nextel, I forgot!
I read the details on the article, looks like they are expanding their stock out of their 12B

the KMD stuff is really his best work
-
I take offense to this.
Did not intend to offend, I just meant with less than 40 planes in service they barely count as a major airline, they rank right up there with Allegiant Air, and below major players like Air Wisconsin :)
Their planes are outfitted well and are nice and new. I wish the company all the best, I just cant see them sponsoring a music festival of any major size to increase awareness of the airline alone.

Was wondering if there are going to be any vendors at the Virgin Mobile fest at Merriweather? Anyone know who to contact about that? Looking to be a vendor there if they will be having them. Thanks!

What does Skinny Puppy coming to the club have to do with HU? Don't put SP in with that "band"
-
i think walkies is saying that because seth is bringing SP, he can do no wrong... he has a permanent "pass"... all is forgiven... that because of SP, he'll put up with anything including HU... etc.
i don't think he's comparing the two "bands" in any way.

i think walkies is saying that because seth is bringing SP, he can do no wrong... he has a permanent "pass"... all is forgiven... that because of SP, he'll put up with anything including HU... etc.

thank you. i was trying to think of a proper way of saying it while eating my breakfast . . . but you did a fine job. cheerios!

So to Seth is to walkies like Marion Barry is to the old ladies of Ward 8 ;D
-
Wow some useful stuff on this thread!
By the way are all tickets General Admission or what??
-
after skinny puppy coming to the club, i hold seth in the highest regard over all other dc representatives.
FYI, tickets for the 930 show have been added to the band's presale - go to http://www.skinnypuppy.com/tour.html, sign up and get the free password.

for FreeFest? i believe there is a VIP section for folks who got a VIP pass by volunteering. dunno if that's going to be the pit, or the first few rows of seats... assuming the main stage is the pavilion. maybe the main stage will be out in the parking lot?
if it's the pavilion, how are they going to control the hordes trying to pack themselves in to the covered area? i'm sure safety rules dictate that only so many people can be in there, but if everyone has a GA ticket then everyone is allowed in there... should make for fun times for security staph!

Putting up with HU would take a lot. There's two factors, the band itself and then their fans!
At least this time Ogre won't be recovering from an eye infection!

when are they mailing the tickets?
-
i already got mine they should be mailed now
-
wat?? I'm going to check my mail
-
haven't received mine although i've moved recently so they need to be redirected, that can add a day or two to delivery. when did people receive theirs in the mail?
-
I haven't received mine either...
-
Still looking for tickets...
-
I checked and I got mine along with my shirts. It said that it departured on Aug. 20, so I'm assuming Aug. 20
-
Still looking for tickets...
Um, consider yourself lucky. I have no idea in my right mind why anyone would want to get mugged and raped and moshed by Atticus wearing hooligans at Hurwitz' PovertyFest.

julian . . . sometimes we bicker and fight, and other times i find you infuriating. but at this moment in time, you make me smile like a vapid woman who just realized the prada shoes she wants are marked down thirty percent. but of course, i am way drunk.
-
i've heard unclaimed tickets will be sold at MPP...any truth to this?
-
i think I've heard that before, it may be a rumor.
Anyone know the time schedules for the bands? Thanks
-
any word of a schedule or how one gets into the pavilion? will it be limited to the first people there (wristbands or something along those lines) or is it truly general admission - free for all for seats and pit area?
-
The schedule will be released on Friday.
-
I hope this event is worth the money i paid.
-
The schedule will be released on Friday.
Where did you see this?
-
official website
-
looks like i'll be there now, on skates :)
-
woohoo! i'll finally get to see the pretentious one skate!
please post your "set time" if/when you have it, definitely don't want to miss this. yes, i'll be loud and obnoxious.

you've been to merriweather, right? where the heck would we skate?! like... as in a bout? we just have a table and will be able to skate around freely, sadly no expos.
-
have you ever been to pimlico? where the hell would you skate there?!?!?!?
oh, wait.
-
Is there a curfew by which time all bands must be finished? I thought that was the case at Merriweather, but a friend tells me that Leonard Cohen played far in to the night recently...
-
Never mind, just saw that gates open at 11, show ends at 10. Woo woo!
-
Just saw this on Twitter: Just got word that all remaining tickets for #FreeFest will be sold today @ 10AM on Ticketmaster.com - $10 (all proceeds go to RE*Gen)
-
Extra tix onsale NOW at Ticketmaster.
-
they have tickets now? what? I still need to price gouge my extra ticket :o
-
I was just able to pull some up. 10 dollars + 3 dollar fee.
-
Pre-party at da club: http://www.uptheantics.com/vfest
-
I was just able to pull some up. 10 dollars + 3 dollar fee.
plus $5 order fee....... plus $2 for printathome (no choice otherwise)...... Two $10 tix, in traditional TM way, now $33..... (Yes I know that printathome is so MPP doesn't have to deal with willcall and there's no time to mail.....And I know the fees are reduced..... And a pair for $33 for a festival is a great deal......but the added 66% still gotta make ya laugh or cry)
-
funny, i could pull up 2 tix for $28:
Tickets (Virgin Mobile FreeFest)
Full Price Ticket US $10.00 x 2
Total Convenience Charge(s) US $3.00 x 2
Order Processing Charge(s) US $0.00
TicketFast Delivery US $2.00
TOTAL CHARGES US $28.00
looks like i wasn't charged a $5 processing charge (then again i WAS charged it when i first ordered my tickets, and it hasn't been refunded by TM... too bad, since i didn't buy the above tickets).
-
I love this board. Just got my ticket for $15. :)
-
The base $10 fee is all going to a charity called Re*Gen
-
oh man
i have to work on sat.
i wanna go to that pre party!!
-
WOWIE WOW WOW WOW
From craigslist:
2 Tickets to VFest/FreeFest - $25 (Carytown)
So, when this whole FreeFest thing got announced, I jumped on ticketmaster and got my 2 tickets, and kinda forgot about the thing until today when they came in the mail. And now, I just do not have the energy to haul myself up to Merriweather Post, fight for decent seats (since it's all GA), and endure the 30,000 Atticus wearing numbskulls who simply want to see Blink-182 play songs about poop and fucking. Oh, and it's supposed to rain too.
I guess if Blink-182 and Weezer died in some sort of bus crash on the way there, it would be pretty awesome because most of their idiot fratboy fans wouldn't show up and I could see the actual talent on the lineup like The National, The Hold Steady, Girl Talk, and Franz Ferdinand in relative peace, but as it is, I'm too old to put up with this nonsense. However, maybe YOU are not! If you want them, $25 gets you both. Will meet you anywhere in Richmond, but prefer Carytown or the Museum District.
-
you sure you didn't post that yourself ;D
-
I wouldn't have lumped in Weezer on my shitlist, but yes, I do want to meet this person for drinks.
-
oh man
i have to work on sat.
and i own a goldfish.
-
how about a cat pic playing with goldfish ;D

Josh Freese is playing drums with Weezer on this tour....
-
I'm guessing they will post the merriweather set up along with the set times sometime today on the website? Trying to squeeze 30000 people into merriweather is going to be interesting. No way that they could have the main stage in pavilion, or could they?
-
Josh Freese is playing drums with Weezer on this tour....
Nice!
-
No way that they could have the main stage in pavilion, or could they?
They almost certainly will.
-
One stage will be located in the pavilion, one stage will be located in the West parking lot (where they have Warped Tour). The dance tent will be located on the paved parking lot on the opposite side of the lawn from 932 (where they had it for the Area 1 Tour).
-
Josh Freese is playing drums with Weezer on this tour....
really? it's not like weezer's songs are so musically complex that they need josh freese... i'm slightly confused by this.
-
Freese must be the go to drummer these days seeing as he is now a permanent member of several bands including DEVO
-

How do they do it for Warped Tour? I heard something about the Pavillion not being *either* of the stages or anything, but that they build two stages, one at either end of the parking lot...

the pavilion isnt either for Warped Tour, but for this it will be the main stage. the second stage will be where warped tour is held. if anyone went to the HFStival in 2007 thats the setup of the stages.

Damn. This isn't going to be as easy as I thought.
-
Seriously how are they going to do the GA thing within the pavilion?? every man for himself with bare knuckled fists and ready to throw down? or will it be first come first served with some kind of wristband entry?
-

So how did Pavilion seating work for that?
I'm grateful that none of the bands I really want to see will be in the Pavilion...
-
I think at that HFStival, the seats were sold either Pit, reserved seating, or lawn, all at different prices obviously. This appears to be a free-for-all, first-come-first-served sort of thing.
-

right, i meant the stage set up was similar to HFStival.
most likey thing is that security will make a judgement call on when to stop allowing people into the pavilion. it will probably only matter during blink and weezer.
of course , they could just say, screw it, let everyone in and fight for it. but somehow i doubt that. all the cool people will be in the dance tent anyway.

So will they cap the pit at all? I'm probably just going to stick to the West Stage all day.
-
does holy fuck even have 90 mins of material to play?
-
Link to the set times is up. Apparently they can't be found. I hope they find the taps.

they have more than one album...

-
I have no idea what the Warped Tour layout was like, and I'm not sure where the West parking lot is (I thought there was only one parking lot).
Any map anywhere that's useful/helpful?
We're trying to figure out where to be dropped off and picked up.
Thx
-
You could probably get dropped off at the mall and assume the drunken, poor criminal idiots going to see Blink-182 will rape you and your friends, and the police/EMTs will come pick you up personally... and for free*.
* - May not actually be free.
-
I have to pick up my fiancee from work in Rockville at 6 and there's no re-entry, so I have two options:
1.) Show up early, watch St. Vincent, Mates of State, and The Hold Steady
2.) Show up late, watch The National (second half of set), Weezer, and Franz Ferdinand
Hmm.

I'll be sure to show up at his show with extra toilet paper and 200 watt light bulbs all plugged in and park a car on stage with the engine running with a beaten up polar bear in it ;D
-
Wait, would the polar bear be farm to fork and sustainable? Because if so, I think that part is ok.
-
Serpant boy, you have (at least) two other options:
- get a second ticket (probably available for cheap at the venue)
- make some sort of alternate arrangement for your fiancee (get a friend to give her a ride, public transpo, taxi, etc)
-
talked to some guy tonight that paid $90 for a single ticket...whaaaaaaat
-
those service fees can really add up sometimes ;D

I think there was a weak unsecured signal while I was there Friday night. I didn't bother logging onto it since the 3G was strong.
-
What a lovely, lovely day for a festival! (Cue "Lovely Weather" by The Vandelles for this one. Killsally is probably the only one who knows what the fuck I'm talking about!) Though I was offered free (serviceless fees) tickets, it just wasn't in the cards for me to attend.
You go Seth for not booking Radiohead for this one! In fact, the whole East Coast should thank you for that one; otherwise, Danny would have had a VIP entry and probably Bill would have stuck around for the fun of it.
-
Hey I got that reference too.
-
Just got back, the festival wasn't bad. It could've been better and more organized, but what can you expect from a free festival and the merriweather. Overall, descent. The blink 182 performance suprised me, and they performed well even after the hiatus period.
-
Well I thought the festival was great and very well organized, a very satisfying day of cool music, meeting friends, being able to move between stages easily and SHADE! I was impressed from the minute I got there with how organized getting cars into the parking structures near the mall was.
Kudo's to Branson and Seth and company for providing a great time, I vote more festivals like this at Merriweather.
Franz Ferdinand were a definite highlight, followed by a solid hits filled set by Weezer, Public Enemy were better than expected although I'm not sure what the point of having additional live musicians is if you can't hear them. The best of what I caught was enjoyable, but would have been better seen in more intimate venues.
-
Had a great time. Thanks, Seth!
-
just got back pretty good for a free festival. I didn't catch much stuff from the pavillion area. I saw Mates of State and taking back sunday. I wanted to see Jet but when I got back to the pavillion after watching a little bit of The Hold Steady it was like a huge line to get back in and it was taking forever. I wanted to see Weezer too and at that time there was also a huge line to get back in. Did people have problems with this or did they watch the show from the lawn??? I thought public enemy was great and Franz was pretty good. Girl Talk I guess what can you say. It's the same stuff every time but this time he has incorporated a forest of toilet paper and confetti. I can see why the tree huggers are boycotting his shows. ;D How was weezer and blink?? Did the meetup occur at the 932?
oh yeah I saw Richard Branson walking around and he was pretty cool with taking pictures with people and everything. Was Seth around? Did he play drums with Blink? ;D
-
I arrived really late, missed the National, and had to park a mile away, but I had a hell of a time. Weezer were great. Girl Talk was fun, even if it's not my thing. Franz Ferdinand was amazing.
Thanks, Seth!
-
Just wanted to say thanks to Seth and Branson for putting on an excellent, highly organized event. Getting in and out of MPP was a breeze and I actually preferred the venue over Pimlico, it kind of reminded me of Bumbershoot the way it was setup. All the vendors were very friendly and we loved the variety of food/beverages available.
Franz absolutely stole the show for me and they have got better each time I've see them. Wale was also a highlight especially since he had UCB with him onstage. Overall we had a great time, well done!
-
Agree about Franz.. AWESOME.. why aren't these guys any bigger in the US? They put on a great live show and their last album TONIGHT is wonderful.. they deserve more of a crowd
I'd love to see Franz Ferdinand at the 930 again..
Weezer really delivered.... I'm not a huge Weezer fan but they sounded great, had great video, and most of the crowd seemed to make them their focus
I thought Blink 182- what I saw- was embarassing.
I liked St Vincent, the Hold Steady and Public Enemy...
I'm not into Jet but they sounded real good on the are you going to be my girl..
-
It must be pointed out, that I saw a steady stream of people leaving the festival after Weezer's set, I'm guessin' there were lots of DC area Weezer fans that were happy to have seen them kinda sorta outside of the blink-182 tour.
-
Franz Ferdinand stole the show!!! They were amazing and they should play 930 ASAP. The entire day was a blast. The dance tent was was crazy too.
-
also I forgot to add: props to Seth and the organizers.. the fest had a really good vibe going....no real issues.. would have been nice to have more places to fill up water bottles and also there was a lack of garbage cans around the second stage..but that was small potatoes.. overall very well organized and no complaints.
-
thanks seth.
- getting in and out was a breeze and i didnt arrive until 4 pm. found a spot less than 5 min away at the mall.
-LOVED the fact that i didnt have to use port a potties.
- liked the shade and being able to come and go in the pavilion
- staff were nice as usual
only full sets i saw were weezer, national, and franz
the bravery were interesting. think i'd prefer to see them at the club
public enemy were good but there were too many assholes in the crowd. really, who crowd surf during public enemy? one girl was lucky she didnt break her neck the way she fell.
weezer and the bit of blink i saw entertained me. cant say i'd pay to see either of them though
national - i always enjoy them and i swear their lead singer is going to burst a vein one day lol
franz was great, highlight of the festival for me. i am now a fan and i cant wait to see them again. please bring them to the club asap
on a side note, why were soo many people spending hours in line to get into the pavilion instead of just finding a spot on the lawn. i mean, yeah it's nice to be under the pavilion but you missed most of the show standing in line - what's the point?
-

I noticed this as well, lots of people just hanging out having fun... And a second on having more drinking water available and as Hutch says especially near the second stage, it would also been nice to have another non freeip tent for people to chill under in the back of the second stage area.
-
I am really happy that so many people had a great time
that's what it's all about for me
-

For me it was a seat in the shade and much, MUCH better sound. Biggest hassle in the pavilion was all the kids saving seats for friends who had gone out to get beers or whatnot. Ushers did a good job of getting people out of the aisles and keeping things orderly.
I should have added earlier that St Vincent & the Hold Steady were the highlights for me. Wasn't overly familiar with either act but enjoyed them both.
Both Weezer & Blink were better than expected. Holy Fcuk were entertaining. Bravery were ok. That's about it for the acts I really liked.
Wish I'd spent more time roaming the tents and all but there were too many bands to see and we didn't have the luxury of 2 days to soak it all in. Can't complain, though. Had a blast.
-
I really enjoyed the show. Caught The Hold Steady, part of Public Enemy, part of the National, all of Weezer (from the lawn). Left after Weezer.
Very well organized show. Parking was easy in and out, Staph and vendors were friendly (and plentiful). Nice Hay Bales to rest upon as well (more hay bales next year).
My only small gripe would be that the sound on the lawn for Weezer was not loud enough, and/or the sound from the Dance Stage area was too loud and bled onto the lawn. I was around the middle of the Lawn, and could not hear some the Weez or could not hear them well enough for my old ears anyway.
Seth - Can DC ever again get a Weezer headlining show? Wasn't the last one 5 years ago or more at Merriweather? and before that it was the Baltimore arena.
-
I had a good time as well. Parking was easy, getting in took seconds, i never had to wait in too long of a line for a bathroom, and they were inside with a sink, etc. I didnt see many groups, just Holy Fuck and Public Enemy. HF were worth going for alone (though they definitely are better to watch at night and inside.) I would have stayed for Girl Talk and Franz Ferdinand, but everyone I was with was ready to go when National started playing. I would definitely go back to MPP for a another festival, if the line up is good.
-
I had a great time at the fest. I guess my only 'gripe' was the long lines to get into the pavilion early in the day when the left and right sections of the pavilion were completely empty. I'm sure there was a reason for it, but it just seemed odd. I never actually went into the pavilion and had a great time all the same. Weezer was great and Mates of State too. Good times.
-
Another satisfied customer here, too. Parking and getting in/out was a breeze. We stayed at the West stage pretty much all day. No lines to speak of. We caught The Hold Steady, Public Enemy, part of The National, Girl Talk and Franz Ferdinand. Great day. Thanks, Seth!
-
First off, I don't think the weather could have been any better yesterday. Finding parking was a breeze and getting out was no problem. i enjoyed the free tent by the west stage. The announcer was hilarious and kept the people waiting in line for free shoes entertained. I was bummed that after waiting in line for an hour, I ended up with free sunglasses instead of shoes, but hey it was free! I can't really complain about this. I didn't show up until the Public Enemy set, which was better than I had expected. The National were good. GT was the highlight of my night. I hadn't seen them before, so I didn't know what to expect. I saw the Lips/EITS show on Friday night, and the confetti/balloons from GT reminded me a lot of the lips set. I left a few songs before Franz Ferdinand finished their set, which proved to be a good decision since the blink show was still going on. Thanks to Seth and everyone else who helped make this a great free festival!
-
Definitely props to Seth for making this such an enjoyable festival. I did not have high hopes given that I was a bit "meh" on most of the acts, with only Franz as band I really wanted to see.
Other than a bit of traffic for 3 or 4 miles of I-95, traffic wasn't too bad, I took a back way from route 32 (cedar lane) to get to the Mall, where I parked at the sears no problem, walked 5 minutes to the venue. Bravery were OK, Weezer were definitely entertaining, Girl Talk was actually a pleasant surprise for me, and managed to get really close to the stage for FF. Had not seen them yet (which is nuts, I've been trying for ages) and they put on a great show.
I rather liked the whole setup at Merriweather for a festival. The only problem is getting good seats in the pavilion. I never even tried to get in, just wasn't worth waiting for God knows how long and then being tied to the seat for fear of not being let back in. I didn't mind sitting on the lawn and watching the screens for the bands that were there. Though I imagine if it were bands I were very excited about, I'd be upset at not being able to get close.
Overall a very well put together event. I'm just yet another one of those picky forumites that would like to see a more "indie" festival in the area. But that's just my personal taste.
-
I'd like to hear more from folks who parked at the mall - in festival-designated spots or otherwise. No hassles getting away last night?
I parked at MPP (where the 4-per-car requirement was not strictly enforced). Getting in was easy as hell but even after leaving immediately after Blink finished w/Damnit it took 40 minutes to get out. Not the worst thing to ever happen but a little surprising given the limited parking and the number of folks who had already bailed.
-
I parked at the mall near Sears and it really only took me about 15-20 minutes before I was going along at a good clip on Broken Land Parkway. I made sure to drive around the inner mall ring road instead of the main outer ring road until I could leave by getting directly onto the parkway from the parking lot. The parking lots at the mall were very full when I arrived around 3:30pm, but was in the right place at the right time for some mall shopper in a minivan pulling out of a space.

i had a blast, seth - you have a winner on your hands.
MPP is a great location for a festival. the in-place infrastructure does a lot to address my usual complaints about many other festivals (porta-potties, lack of decent food and drink selection, lack of shade, bad parking, etc). LOVED the set-up of the west stage at the bottom of the hill - the slope ensured that everyone had a good view even from the back. please re-do this at future installments. please!
i gotta say i was shocked at how amazing the parking situation was. the missus and i have been traumatized by a few bad parking experiences (hello, nissan) and were more than worried when (1) we realized that almost twice as many people as a normal capacity MPP show might be in attendance, and (2) we got a parking spot on the upper deck of the garage - we were afraid this would mean an hour just to get out of the garage. these turned out to be false concerns - we stayed until the end of franz and when we got to the car, the garage was 90% empty already. traffic moved out incredibly smoothly, i took 29 all the way to 495 and was on the outer loop in less than 15 minutes. amazing. maybe it's because so many people left right after weezer? or blink-182 went on past most of their fans' curfews so they left before we did? whatever it was, it was the best festival parking experience i've ever had. thank you!
to people who complain about the line-ups to get in to the pavilion or pit: what did you expect? there were 30,000+ people trying to occupy some 8,000 spaces... of course there is going to be a line-up and most people weren't going to get in. there is no way of fixing this. if you really want to be in there, plan accordingly.
music i caught: mates of state were pretty good. taking back sundays were pretty awful. hold steady were decent. the 2 minutes of jet that i caught were not bad, i was expecting worse. couldn't really get in to public enemy, but the crowd was eating it up. the national were pretty but unmemorable. weezer was surprisingly good, even better than expected. girl talk was fun (when isn't he?). FF were the highlight of the festival, as expected. didn't catch a single note of b-182's set.
miss p, kosmo and thedirerctor showed up for the 2:30 meet-up, along with the missus. would have been nice to see more of the regulars...
and who here knew that the festival had a live stream? seth, you might want to advertise that a bit more. great promo for getting the festival's name out there.
again, thanks to IMP & its staph!
-
I had a great time. MPP is a much better environment than Pimlico for a music fest - it's not even close. I only wish I could've stayed to watch Blink and/or Franz, but my daughter and her friends had their first day of school today. A 2 day festival at MPP is something I would pay for. Who wants to spend 2 days inside a racetrack, although I admit that is better than the parking lot environment of Bamboozle. Anyways, my experience at music fests had been a big turn-off until this one.
-
well I did show up at the 230 932...I got in about 232 actually.. but I don't know what any of y'all look like so I kind of looked at everyone, walked around and looked at the stuff on the walls and walked up... I didn't feel comfortable yelling "MEETUP!!!!!!!!!"
sorry about that..next time
-
yeah, good point... we didn't pick a precise spot or way to identify ourselves. my bad. indeed: next time.
-
I showed up at around 3:00, but didn't see anyone I recognized so I bailed.
-
again, sorry: collectively, we only had about 30 minutes of conversation. once we started discussing the weather and how pleased we were that blink-182 were back together, it was time to split :P
(seriously tho, we must have just missed each other as we left at 3:00 - too bad, would have been nice to catch up!)
-
I had a really good time. I'm not sure if I like it better than Pimlico, though. The shade that Merriweather has to offer is very enjoyable. But one downside of having a festival here is the terrain; there are alot of hills at MPP. When you go see just a concert, its not so bad because you're usually in the same place/area for the duration of your stay. But at a festival like Vfest, I got tired pretty quickly going from area to area, constantly going up and down.
I stayed in the dance tent for most of the time, but ventured out to see Public Enemy, get food, and just wander around alot. The dance area was pretty cool - I was expecting a tent, but was rather surprised at how well it worked having the area in the trees like that. It made for a really good vibe at night.
Also, the last little gripe - most of the porto-potties didn't have any sanitizer dispensers in or around them. But MPP does have actual bathrooms which is a definitely nice alternative.
-
whoever godinhell is on youtube he filmed some great Franz Ferdinand.. I think he's a forumer...
-
We parked at the mall in a garage I knew was used for concert overflow parking, and it turned out the entrance for the fest was right there, easy in and out. My favorites for the day were Mates Of State and Weezer (who else could bookend their set with covers and still squeeze in all the hits under an hour)?
Food was good, shade and water were great, I'd definitely pay to get the same thing next year.
-
what cover did weezer end with?
opening up with "war pigs" was fun... and confusing: why would they open with a cover?!? we left weezer to catch the tail end of girl talk... who played "war pigs"! what are the chances of hearing the a sabbath song twice at a festival? :)
-
Should I stay or should I go
-
"should i stay or should i go" ...
I actually enjoyed the Weezer performance except for their lame songs like pork and beans and beverly hills. Would have been great if they did "Pink Triangle" just to shut up their fans (as they did with "The Good Life").
Really enjoyed St. Vincent, last 3 songs of Holy Fuck, and the National.
Girl Talk = same boring schtick, different day.
Public Enemy = waste of time
Franz Ferdinand = best of the fest!!!
-
Was a great time. Thanks to NKOTB (although I might have the wrong forumer) for the restaurant rec. and great directions. :) I parked in the mall - and the spot was maybe a 5 min walk from MPP. I even asked mall security cop where it was, as I couldnt remember for the life of me. They were super nice. Leaving was even easier - took 3 mins or so to be out of the mall. Timed it perfectly.
Managed to see near full sets of most bands I wanted to see.
Caught a lot of Jet's set - which I was pleasantly surprised with.
Public Enemy - after about 20 mins I had seen enough. Although I just love Chuck D.
The Bravery - they sounded great and I am liking their new stuff - and considering I wont pay to see them at T5, this was good enough.
The National - amazed how no one was watching them. I got over there and managed to walk up almost all the way to the front. Just love 'Fake Empire' and thought they had a great set.
Weezer - were fun. I didnt even attempt to get into the pavilion but I did manage to find a spot in the very front of the hill and had a great view, plus the help of the screens. I took off after 'The Good Life' as I had to see Girl Talk.
Girl Talk - if I never see him again, it'd be fine with me. Was expecting a bunch more (prob seen way too many videos) and felt that it didnt come close to my own expectations.
Blink 182 - I had no intention of seeing them, but after leaving Girl Talk went back to my same spot as where I was at Weezer. I was surprised I knew almost all of their songs - I never recalled listening to them that much - Ill thank the radio. They sounded great and seemed like they were having a ton of fun.
Franz - well they never disappoint! And was a great set. I couldnt get their songs out of my head driving home which I guess is a good thing.
The drive home sucked - very long and I was tired. I guess my only real complaint was - after having read it would be over at 10pm, I prepared myself for that. 11pm was a bit rough so I had to cut out on some of Franz's set.
Overall, I had a great time. Lots of good bands and I could see a lot of near-full sets. That was a total bonus. Easy enough to walk from stage to stage.
I swear everyone was watching Weezer!
-
Drove past the 2nd stage as Wale was on, that was disappointing. Then we sat at our spot and had a few beers. Walked about 20 minutes or so, got more beers danced a bit. I wanted the dance stage to be louder! Got free Converse size 9 left shoes, check out the booths. Didnt really catch anyone's whole set, just stayed for about 15 20 minutes for everyone. By the time Girl Talk came on we were exhausted and drunk as hell, walked back to the car and relaxed for a while before deciding to head back. Not a bad Sunday. Anyone hit the karaoke stage? Hahahahaha
-
was sweetcell wearing a red shirt yesterday?
-
was sweetcell wearing a red shirt yesterday?
nope, i was wearing a black NIN t-shirt.
-
I got there early and just stayed on the rail of the West Stage all day. I really liked the first band, Sunday's Roulette. They looked like they were still in high school but they rocked out and got te crowd moving enough to start a small mosh put. Does anyone know how they wound up on the bill? I thought Wale was hilarious, possibly the best show I saw there even though I typically don't like rap. Girl Talk, Hold Steady, Public Enemy, and the National were good as well. The only two weak acts I thought were St. Vincent, although she's not really my type of music, and Birthday Massacre.
Also I thought the crowd control was very good. Compared to previous Virgin Fests, there was a lot less pushing and shoving, and I was way up in the front. The only two acts where I saw any was Public Enemy and Girl Talk and that wasn't too bad.
-
wow me too! with front saying 1989-2009? :P
was sweetcell wearing a red shirt yesterday?
nope, i was wearing a black NIN t-shirt.
-
yup, and the wrong dates on the back.
-
what cover did weezer end with?
opening up with "war pigs" was fun... and confusing: why would they open with a cover?!? we left weezer to catch the tail end of girl talk... who played "war pigs"! what are the chances of hearing the a sabbath song twice at a festival? :)
I was listening to Sabbath on the way home, including War Pigs.
I didn't stay long. Watched the Hold Steady then Public Enemy and that was enough.
I thought the setup was really decent, there were just not that many bands I wanted to see. But I really did think that Merriweather was a great spot for this sort of thing. Getting in and out was a piece of cake. A few assholes during PE's set, but nothing too bad. We were right up front and after a few too many crowd surfers we bailed from there.
I give the lineup a "C-", but give Seth and Merriweather an "A".
-
yup, and the wrong dates on the back.
it was totally possible that i said something to you, as i talked to people wearing NIN t-shirts (mainly just talking about the last shows they've done)
-

yup, a random person came up to me at the 932 and asked me about which show(s) i saw - must have been you (i answered that i was at both T5 shows). there were 4-5 of us sitting at a table in the near corner on the left (near the stage) as soon as you walked in the 932.
dammit, planning fail on my part. next time i'll let y'all know what i'm wearing or some other way of ID'ing the gang.
-
betao, i think you spoke to me after the Holy F**k set...we also talked about MBV in Richmond....was that you?
-
I didn't have my great, just great shirt on, maybe next time so any of you got converse it seems like they were just handing those out ;D Also did Richard Branson sky dive onto the top of the pavillion?
-
well I did show up at the 230 932...I got in about 232 actually.. but I don't know what any of y'all look like so I kind of looked at everyone, walked around and looked at the stuff on the walls and walked up... I didn't feel comfortable yelling "MEETUP!!!!!!!!!"
sorry about that..next time
I stopped by the 932 for a little while, but I'd lost track of whether there was a specific meetup time, so I didn't get there 'til 6:15ish. I've never met most forumers, so I'm not sure if any were there then.
Overall, I enjoyed the festival, esp. (in order of performance times) Holy F*ck, Lee Burridge, Public Enemy, and Weezer. I was a little sad that the dance stage was so dominated by trance music -- I found Pete Tong unlistenable. I felt a little sorry for Chuck D that Flavor Flav got way louder cheers than he did when Chuck introduced the band.
I parked in one of the satellite lots and it was fairly easy -- took a shuttle bus to the site and then back.
-
I had a really good time as did my friends, BUT I do have a few gripes.
MERRIWEATHER..... I love that place when i'm actually in the pavilion. but the sound up on the lawn sucks. Maybe someone can tell me if it's always like this because I rarely do lawn, but what was up with the sound? Guitars way down in the mix and the overall mix was just QUIET... I could barely hear the music on stage much less the banter in between songs. There should be some speaker system set up behind the pavilion for the lawn people to get the full rock experience. When I can hear the drunken mess a few people over clearly talking about how much of a ho she thinks the girl a few rows down is over what should be the most raucous song of any bands set is not good.
The Video screens were completely out of sync with the live on stage.
I still would have preferred that it be somewhere that I could get the full GA experience (no seats)
Lastly...We had to park down near the Community College and the shuttles were no where to be found at least when we arrived or left. We waited for one for 25 minutes and ended up finally walking the 15 minutes to get to merriweather and walking another 15 -20 minutes to get back to our car at the end.
I know that sounds really whiny but really... Seth and Richard Thank you so much for a good time. My friends and I all donated to the re-generation fund and look forward to next years Virgin Fest wherever it may be.
-
> Also did Richard Branson sky dive onto the top of the pavillion?
They used a cherry picker to bring Richard Branson and some of Blink-182 up on top of the pavilion, then we waited as a helicopter climbed higher and higher and we watched a video feed on top of someone's head in the copter, then two guys jumped out of the copter. It was cool to watch them coming down at the same time as we watched the live feed as them falling. They pulled their chutes and managed to land right on top. Richard Branson then came over to the crowd with them and sprayed some champagne, then welcomed everyone and said something to the effect of "Wouldn't it be nice if it was free every year?"
-
hmm wouldn't that be cool if Seth had done that and sprayed everyone with Guinness ;D
-
so overall, i had a fantastic time. i saw the usual crew at the 9:32 and around the place - the director, got haggis?, kosmo and sweetcell and mrs. cell
franz were the highlight of the show for me.
mates of state were good in the couple songs i caught of them.
the national were good times.
public enemy not too shabby.
st. vincent is gorgeous and rocks.
i have a friend who lives within walking distance so i was able to park in her community and walk over within 5 minutes. there was no traffic in or out for me either. the setup for merriweather was great, but man, the terrain is dangerous. there was basically no way i could stay on skates the whole day - which made me sad. hardly a gripe .. just personal :)
the event staff was pretty nice and helpful.
also seeing thatguy on the stage during girl talk was fun to watch. also the little boy dancing, adorbs. i'm sad i wasn't able to catch any of weezer, but i was in the front for the national/girl talk/franz and didn't really want to move. the west stage was a total win.
anyone who watched blink - how was travis in light of am's death?
-

This was not me, as I never approached a group of people sitting at a table - my victims of conversation were mainly random people standing around by themselves. But it would've been nice to share words with you, sweetcell (same goes to the other forumers too!)
-
betao, i think you spoke to me after the Holy F**k set...we also talked about MBV in Richmond....was that you?
Yes! That was indeed me. I claimed how jealous I was of you seeing TDS done front to back. I never even thought to ask if you were a forumer. Nice meeting you sir, hope you enjoyed the festival.

we didn't care last night . . . but we do tonight. i guess it does take a day or two for tragedy to set in.
-
weird, I wonder why they didn't cancel last nights show as well
-

have you ever seen seth?

yes, he's a big guy. I saw him play drums tutti fruti at last years v fest ;D

well, i might have been in line at the bar, or spaced out b/c miss p was going on about how kick-ass her roller girls are, or... anyhoo, i strongly suspect it was you but who knows. we'll def make a more coordinated effort next time!
-
that was the best sunday ever!!!!!!!!!!
parking was hella easy.
it was hot as hell..but the shade was a heaven.
the toyota tent...too funny.
street dancers on the orange cone stage...awesome.
got to see holy fuck///then half of mates of state. their songs get stuck
in my head.
jet/bravery/
the national was a surprise hit for me.
girl talk w as crazy...getting pushed around. oh well
pete tong. i was so wasted i just wanted to dance and i did.
too bad i didn't get to see one or two songs of st. vincent
all i heard was her say 1 2 2 1 2 2...eep.
crab cakes..yummy
love it!!!!
-
haha yeah St. Vincent had sound check problems. So for like 10 mins it was 1 2 1 2 and some other alphabets. Was annoying but she sounded great after all that. ;D
-
also seeing thatguy on the stage during girl talk was fun to watch.
was my sheer joy at being in that position evident from the crowd?
it was a good day from my standpoint, but i'm considering entirely different things than most attendees.
plus, i got that awesome camp counselor outfit. a bunch of staph members came up with new names and jobs. i'm kip, from cabin 3. i teach archery. make sure you sign up at breakfast, because my group fills up fast.
-
is that guy the guy with the big hoop earings? ;D
-
is that guy the guy with the big hoop earings? ;D
Yes.
I too got a kick out of Thatguy and his constant, stoic, on the job pose with oodles of dancing crazies just feet from him.

thatguy!

so this guy is that guy known as thatguy? ;D

yes it was quite evident you were nothing but pleased to be in that position. but glad you were since yahoos started throwing crap into the audience, like that box .. wtf?
-
haha yes the box was crowd surfing ;D
-
ugh...no pictures of me in white and khaki. it's painful to see.
-
no way, kip! it's nice to see you in a different "look."
-
I had a great time, and found Merriweather a great site for a festival of this size. The west stage worked really well because you could see from everywhere. Reminded me of the same stage at Lollapalooza that the Hold Steady played last year....
Gotta say thanks for everything... True that staff is always great. Concessions wouldn't let me re-use my beer cup, which saddened me just from a recycling standpoint, but man, if that's my only complaint, that was a helluva day!
Saw Kosmo and Bombay, but didn't make it to the 932 otherwise. We got in about 3 and really wanted to catch all of Hold Steady, then stayed over at the West stage except for a short trip to catch about a third of the Weezer set. All good....all good.
-
ugh...no pictures of me in white and khaki. it's painful to see.
are you trying to say, "i'm too sexy for this shirt, too sexy for these shorts, too sexy for these annoying screaming girls . . . ."? :D
-
West stage was great, main stage sucked. Could hardly make out any music from the lawn
-
West stage was great, main stage sucked. Could hardly make out any music from the lawn
hence that is why I skipped out on weezer and blink as I knew the sound from the lawn would be bad. West stage was great ;D

a very positive review from Spin... like i sez, you've got a winner on your hands.
The Best of Virgin Mobile Freefest (http://www.spin.com/articles/best-virgin-mobile-freefest)
All summer long, we've been chronicling the best and worst moments of every major music festival, from South by Southwest to Lollapalooza. At Sunday's Virgin Mobile Freefest in Columbia, Maryland, just between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, it was nearly impossible to find a surly crowd or witness a trainwreck set. Simply put, there wasn't much in the way of "worst." Oh, and did we mention that all 35,000 tickets were given away for FREE? Could this be the perfect festival?
http://www.spin.com/articles/best-virgin-mobile-freefest
-
There is a survey about the festival on the website now, worth a quick run through to provide feedback about the venue and event.
Any chance of getting some archived performances on the website? Would really like to watch the Franz Ferdinand stream again...

fun write-up about just how "free" this festiavl really was... i.e. very. thank you, sir branson!
Rockin? In Virgin?s Free World
Conventional wisdom says that nothing beats free. Unless, perhaps, it?s free with benefits. While tickets to the fourth Virgin Mobile Music Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Aug. 30 were, in fact, free, a few hundred music fans got serious benefits.

Somehow I ended up with a single, white, right-foot Chucks. Anyone know where I can get a lefty to match?
-
yet another good article in pollstar on FreeFest:
Virgin Fest Lets Free Ring (http://www.pollstar.com/blogs/news/archive/2009/09/13/688818.aspx)
as the story points out, i appreciated that the sponsors were more than just a constant eye-sore - they really contributed to making it a better event.
suggestion for next year: don't make it a freefest, make it a cheapfest/highly-subsidized fest. the fact that it was free prompted a lot of people to grab tickets and not go, they were never committed to going and it was no loss to them if they didn't. also, it created a field day for scalpers. $20-30 would still be a ridiculously low price for that much entertainment and would help mitigate some of the above issues.

that's odd, since his show on BBC Radio 1 is decent, guess DJ-ing 'live' he's different. As for 'trance' - it's my least favourite dance music genre - the dance tent's lineup this year looked tremendously dull
-
I'll take trance over ed banger electro shit any day.
I didn't think the DJs were bad at all. I enjoyed what I saw. Pete Tong played a cool mix of Underworld's "two months off", that was a nice touch.
-
i will never understand why dj's are famous, they just play other peoples music.
-
if you enjoyed the weezer set, weezer.com will be selling downloads/cds of the freefest show and other weezer shows from this tour...
-
i will never understand why dj's are famous, they just play other peoples music.
in my opinion they improve "other" people's music.... ;)

The vfest set is now up for sale at http://www.weezer.com/live/ (http://www.weezer.com/live/).

I downloaded that Weezer set a few weeks ago. It's well worth it. Sound quality is good!
