i would of love to have gone, but baltimore is 2 hours one way for me, without traffic, and sorry but on a work week, not even julian's rsvp crystal goblet champagne nibbly hour could get me out of the house.  ween should play in my backyard.  i've got a huge bonfire pit and would have bbq ribs straight off the grill plus serve free grolsh and hofbrau.

Holy shit, tonight ruled.  After my bout with ho-hummedness with the Wilco show, I was wondering if I was seeing some of these bands too much.  And given this was Ween show 15 or 16 of mine (and me not being super psyched on the last two shows), I thought it might be more of the same.

Instead, they killed it, and my gripes about their setlists always being better the night after I see them went out the window:

intro jam
I Can't Put My Finger On It
Transdermal Celebration
The Grobe
Gabrielle
Bananas And Blow
Learnin To Love
She Fucks Me
Even If You Don't
Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?
Porkroll Egg & Cheese
Boy's Club
The Stallion Part 3
Your Party
I'll Be Your Jonny On The Spot
Object
You Were The Fool
Zoloft
Spinal Meningitis
Ohio
Mononucleosis
Sorry Charlie
Woman And Man
Slow Down Boy
The Beacon Lght
Booze Me Up And Get Me High
Fiesta

ENCORE:
Touch My Tooter
Fat Lenny (12 Minutes guitar freakout)

Definitely filled with some great rare live tracks (I haven't heard You Were The Fool since the '96 country tour), personal favorites (Mononucleosis, Sorry Charlie, The Stallion), and a bunch I had never heard before (Slow Down Boy and Woman & Man, which was BRUTAL).  And it didn't hurt that they skipped Back to Basom.

I can't wait to hear the boot of this.

Also, it's 4:30 am, and I'm up after just 2 and a half hours sleep to head to Chicago for work and Pitchfork...

Damn.

The last Ween show I caught was Sonar and that soured me.

Was Claude on drums or did they have someone else?

yeah, claude was on drums.

it was the third time i've seen ween, and i think i've finally realized that i don't really get it.  i "tweeted" the show; i'd copy & paste all my updates if i could figure it out.  this was a recurring thought:  "observation: most ween fans are smelly, unattractive white guys."

Their fanbase  was infiltrated by the smelly hippie crowd years ago. Blame it on Phish for covering Roses are Free.

Yeah Walkonby, I said it.

It isn't the physical characteristics of the Ween fans that annoy me, it's how giddy they can get; cheering absolutely everything the band does like mental patients. The worst was a show I saw when one of the guys said the word "brown" while bantering between songs. I mean, seriously, you're cheering hysterically because the guy said "brown"?  Ugh.

there were quite a few of those, jumping up & down, clapping wildly, screaming "yeah! YEAH!!"  i can appreciate that passion to some extent.

me saying they're ugly & smelly-- probably uncalled for :)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually find the frat boy fans LESS offensive than the hippies.  Sure the frat guys were super jazzed about everything, and talking about all of the taped shows they've downloaded, freaking out about Ween-lexicon things, etc.  But they also are super polite, easy going, and offered me free beer and weed (alas, an hour long drove stopped me from the former, and DARE stopped me from the later).

The hippies seemed way too scene-based.  I saw a number of dudes push their way to the front like asses, then stand around bored until their friends met up with them.  Only then were they into the music, man!

But I agree with heather, the guys are smelly and ugly.  However, female Ween fans seem unbelievably hot and know every word to every song.

Have never been a Ween fan at all so I haven't a clue what's up with the band. In fact, I always had this bad habit of confusing them with Weezer whom I equally dislike. Just want to know if Kramer was with them?

Here's the strange part that I bet even a lot of the hardcore Ween fans may not know. Kramer is now one of the new gods of the Shoegaze movement. If fact, if I considered in any way whatsoever of seeing them, it would be solely for Kramer on the oft chance that I'd get to speak with him for a bit. Most of you probably know that he does production work for various bands. Many of them are those bands that I sometimes go on about in here that ya'll ignore. Go figure!

I thought this was the best place to note that #thankyouNKOTB is one of the trending topics on Twitter today

an appropriate tribute to NKOTB being an all round splendid fellow!

oh!  forgot to mention the highlight of last night's baltimore trip.  guess what started today.... otakon (http://www.otakon.com/default2.asp)!  words can't describe the joy of watching hordes of "characters" running around the city in costume!

so the discussion revolves around the smelliness of Ween fans or whether their fans are fratboys or ugly?

PA-THE-TIC.

Anyways just got back from Dewey... 3 hour 15 minute show..ridiculous set list..
the venue was everything i'd hoped and i think ween stepped it up... I was not at Baltimore but that show seems to have been a bit less conventional set listwise..

I've been seeing Ween going back to 1996 and they still got it.

Nice...you got some choice songs there, for sure.  I haven't heard the Blarney Stone in a while, and the Stallion Pt. 5 is a rad surprise!  So the Bottle & Cork was a dive?

Do they still do Poopship?

And if they do, does it still have a 20+ minute noise/freakout section?

The last time I saw Poopship was in 2000; definitely wasn't 20 minutes.  More like 10 or so.  But it was pretty much a noisy mess in the best way possible.

i'm still one of those "freak out fans" who waits patient for them to duplicate the beauty they laided down on pure gauva, that is mourning glory.  hard to do live i guess, unless they once again began hitting the powdered scotch guard.

It wasn't as divey as I thought but a great venue... here are some things I found interesting:

- they had waitresses running cutting through the crowd during the show holding trays over their head filled with jello shots etc... and also buckets with beers... i filmed some video and its hilarious to see the trays and bucket going by..almost floating by...on the other hand I had to move for them quite a bit..
- crowd seemed to feel it was fine to smoke during show.. not sure what delaware law is
- the place had some game tables
- part of the bottle and cork had no roof which gave it an outdoors feel

Gene is really letting himself go to shit though..that can't be a good sign...although he seemed very happy and was doing a lot of funny faces/acting/strange delivery...I wouldn't say he was on drugs..probably its just Gene...I hope he gets on an exercise plan or something..He's looking more like Jabba the Hut every day..

Dean seemed to have less presence at this show..Claude seemed bored but he did take a pretty long solo...Dave was solid but no presence

The crowd was pretty peaceful except for Blarney where some idiots started pushing...crowd was pretty darn young! ween is continuing to get new fans while older fans learn how to work their baby bjorns and reminisce about the good old days.... my friend felt we were the oldest people there..i didn't notice

The venue could have sold more tickets..nice that they didn't overfill it...

All in all a great ween show made better for me by the fact that I drank a lot before the show and then just focused on concert so that I can actually remember it...also managed to film some of it so that helps..

Total bitch getting there and back and honestly not something I'll do again unless its something I really need to see.. I think if Baltimore had gone on sale first I would have gone to that show althogh it was nice going to this one with a group of friends...kind of felt like a unique ween show.. I even got a brown ween shirt and i am not the type to buy shirts (unless the concert blows me away)

I'm one of those fans who likes their stuff from Chocolate and Cheese onwards more..the songs are more fleshed out, better sounding, more melodies etc... Chocolate, 12 golden country greats, mollusk and white pepper are all great albums...I also like Cucaracha... so I don't need to hear the early stuff that much..to me it sounds halfbaked.. I know many disagree but if they played mainly stuff from Pod/Guava/godween I think the same people who keep asking for the old stuff would be asking for the new stuff...its always hard to please everyone and there's always someone who wants to complain

the brownest stuff of the show was Let me lick your pussy at the end which barely seemed like a song and went on forever.. by that point.. after three hours I was just kind of moving around the bar running into people etc..

>>>so I don't need to hear the early stuff that much..to me it sounds halfbaked

The sound on those first few albums is too amateurish for me.  But the songs are really good when they do them now with better musicianship; usually they're my favorites of the show

you dare admit that the genius of boognish brown that is god ween satan and the pod . . . not be good??  oh my dear lord, somehow the disciples of pure great music just rolled their eyes in your general direction.  everything ween is a everything vein shot of jesus juice that must be known as worshipped.

Sorry I missed your question, Jag.  I think I saw Kramer play bass with them way back in '96, but since then, it's pretty much been the current guy.

For anyone interested, both the Baltimore and Dewey shows are on Browntracker (http://www.browntracker.net/browse.php).
