Title: Club's 30th anniversary?
Post by: azaghal1981 on April 08, 2010, 12:12:26 pm
Another boardee brought this to my attention earlier today. Isn't it coming up soon? Is anything planned/being planned?

i had the date wrong.  it's not this weekend, it's next.  the 18th.  there will also be an online component to the story.

y'all find stuff on your own pretty well.  i would have mentioned it eventually.

Will there be a live component of some sort, too? A TBA show other than the one already taking place on that night or maybe on the night after (dark as of now)?

don't know of any confirmed shows, but that doesn't mean there won't be anything.  i don't even know the exact date of the anniversary.  the article comes out next weekend, but that's not timed with anything else in particular that i know of.

Oh God please no! Haven't Fugazi, Mackaye and the rest of their ilk done enough to suck every ounce of fun  and relevance from the DC music scene?

Really that whole straight edge/dischord scene is the worse thing to happen to this town (musicwise).

A few things about the article:

1) great to see Thatguy and learn about how he appeared on the scene

2) Why does Ian MacKaye appear in every one of these type of things?    Dischord shows were only a small, small part of the 930 Club's history.

3) I can't believe the entire WUST Hall was purchased for $700,000... that'll barely get you even a rowhouse in DC these days.

You know I was tempted to say no but the truth is if it was at the 930 as part of the 30th anniversary festivities YES.

Mackaye and his peeps can have a monopoly on the special events and tributes and reunions at the Black Cat - which they all but do- but the 930 too? Come on!.

DC has to be about more than these guys and if its not lets leave the night open and see what happens...We won't have any less fun than at a Fugazi show..thats for sure.

The 30th anniversary should be a big celebration and I'm sorry to say Fugazi does not fit the bill.

OK so here is what we know so far.

According to this, (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/16/AR2010041602110.html) the anniversary is, in fact on 5/31. And according to JA, The Fleshtones are playing as part of the anniversary show (most likely with other bands). Shit's starting to come together!

who wrote the editorial comments in the post article? Freedom du CRAP?!

the diss of the Bayou is totally unecessary.. I'd hardly call U2, Phish -among many others- "the spawn of REO Speedwagon.."!

I remember the column at the old 930 -among other things-very well..

yeah the Bayou dis in the article was pretty harsh. I saw some excellent shows at the Bayou (along with some lousy ones). Among the best:

David Johansen Group, The Razz 11/29/79
Gang of Four, Pylon 11/16/80
Gang of Four, R.E.M. 6/21/81
Big Country 12/12/83
Red Rockers, Scream 12/16/84
Waterboys, Model Prisoners 10/27/85
Midge Ure 12/17/85
Big Audio Dynamite 12/9/86
Big Audio Dynamite, Junkyard Band 4/12/87
Replacements 7/29/87
Ron Wood & Bo Diddley 11/24/87
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone 5/1/88
Tom Tom Club 5/17/89
Big Audio Dynamite 10/3/89
Skatalites 2/25/90
Faith No More 7/16/90
Charlatans UK 3/1/91
MC 900 Ft Jesus 2/1/92
Lindsey Buckingham 3/30/93
The Kinks 4/30/93
Big Audio Dynamite 11/12/95
Tom Tom Club 10/16/98  (that was the last time I went there ... and met and chatted with Tina, too .. which was one of the cool things about that place, the band had to walk thru the crowd up in the balcony to get back to their dressing room).

Interesting... guess they're going to announce it really close to the date...

They should make it free and have free beer...

After 30 years of selling us  tickets and overpriced beer its the least they could do! :)

I mean when you throw a birthday party you don't charge people for the cake!

I'm real curious what they'll do..

The best band to get for something like this would be J Geils Band...talk about a party! But I know thats not in the cards..

But I can't get a handle on who else is coming,  I've heard people floating everything from Aphex Twin to REM.  If any of that is true, I will be ready to kill for tickets when the word goes out ::)

I dont' save my ticket stubs and I am not sure who I saw first at the club.  I saw 3 bands in 1984:  Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, and the Replacements.    Or the Replacements could have been 1985 and I saw another band in 1984.  It was the "Let it be" tour.   Terrible show is all I remember.   I think I saw Let's Active at the club in 1984 as well.

My first show at the club's current location was Dead Kenedys in 1985.  It was called WUST Music hall that point, i Believe.  People were jumping off the second floor balcony into the crowd.  And Jello was telling to take the skinheads in attendance outside and kick their asses.  Night Joe Theisman had his career ending injury.

i can't remember my first 930 show.....saw tons of industrial bands in the early 90's.  i did see cop shoot cop at the club on my 21st birthday.  fist show was probably in 91

Mine was 94, and it was Edsel and someone else. Anyone know who that someone else was? I'm curious.

Followed shortly by Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, which was a big mistake.

Only other show at the old club i caught was Letters to Cleo in '96 maybe?

I remember them being kinda jam band-ish, though their recorded stuff doesn't really sound like that. Maybe I was just in a bad mood.

Well I said that before I saw the stellar lineup that was assembled, and only in reaction to some of the tiring overhype that was going on in the forum. No offense intended and apologies if necessary to the 9:30 Club and it's staff.

I think the same thing happens with FreeFest. Some naysayers in this forum will crap all over it in advance, but then if one or two of thier favorite bands are booked, they're all over the free tickets like flies on cow manure.

I think the same thing happens with FreeFest. Some naysayers in this forum will crap all over it in advance, but then if one or two of thier favorite bands are booked, they're all over the free tickets like flies on cow manure.

That's exactly how I feel about the 30th anniversary show.

There are a few of us who never gave a rat's ass about the show since its beginning.

and that's why you will specifically be excluded from the invite list

Well in the case of the 930 30th Anniversary show its not so much about the acts but about the community..

Even if I don't manage to be there I got to hand it to Seth for making it a free event and largely by invitation..It really is like a birthday party....

i think the cost of admission should be more than free . . . just to see hutch and julian in the same room together.

Same.  *sigh*  I mostly lurk here, though.  Was the email blast limited?  Ah well.  I live nearby and can always try lurking around the club instead of lurking around the internets.

nope, this first invitation went out to forum members only.  maybe you needed a certain post count to be included?

email blast subscribers should be getting an invitation later this afternoon/tonight.

that would make sense.  i think i've posted twice in the 3 years or so since i registered.  damn.  who knew one of my regrets would be not spending enough time online?  i'll try through the email blast.

i was kidding about the post count thing - pure speculation.  i doubt they'd enforce that, but who knows.

Well in the case of the 930 30th Anniversary show its not so much about the acts but about the community..

this.

i heart the 930 club, it's having a birthday party, so few places i'd rather be on monday night, regardless of the lineup.  the fact that it a very decent and eclectic lineup should make a great night on the town.  fingers crossed.

yup, and i'd be up for another one.  i suggest we wait until set times are announced, so we can pick the most opportune time to be in the basement.  given the number of acts, i think there won't be much time between sets so we may have to miss a little bit of someone's performance.

i'm thinking during clutch's set.  <hides>

no, you aren't SOL yet.  only the forum-members-only lottery has taken place.  i see that you joined yesterday - might have been too late to get in.  the e-mail blast lottery invitations haven't gone out yet.  that will happen this afternoon/tonight.

"Limit 1 entry per name/email address. If more than one entry is received from a name/email address, every entry for that name/email address will be cancelled."

Paul Gray.  Next show @ 9:30 Club was 2 weeks later Foo Fighters.  I know I will get a surprise which really isn't a surprise.  I think everyone won via here.

Thank you Seth for putting this show on and the invite.

Hey, I just saw the info on the 3oth anniversary party somewhere else, and wasn't on the email list. So I added myself, but I figure the notices already went out on that from what people are saying here. What's this about an RSVP on here? I don't see it. And can I still do that? I'd very much like to make it to this thing. All else failing, if I'm just finding out too late, what time do people think would be good to get down there if I'm gonna try to wrestle my way through the mob to get tickets at the door? I saw some mention of that being an option, but that there won't be many.

What's this about an RSVP on here? I don't see it. And can I still do that?

that ship has sailed as well, in fact it left before the e-mail list one did.  just like you had to be on the e-mail list to get the e-mail invite, you had to be a member of the forum to get the forum invite (it wasn't a straight-up rsvp, it was still a lottery).

what time do people think would be good to get down there if I'm gonna try to wrestle my way through the mob to get tickets at the door? I saw some mention of that being an option, but that there won't be many.

doors are at 5 pm.  how much earlier you want to be there is anyone's guess.  an hour?  three?  who knows.  outside of this bboard, has this show been generating any buzz?  is the general public all over this thing?
Title: Re: Club's 30th anniversary?

I would guess yes, as I found it on the Clutch profile, then googled  9:30 Club 30th Anniversary party, and found a news article about it. Any idea how many is a 'small number' as far as what will be available at the door?
Title: Re: Club's 30th anniversary?
Post by: sweetcell on May 28, 2010, 02:16:37 am
no idea.  you might try asking over in the FAQ section of this bboard, the club is responsive to inquiries as long as it's information they're allowed/supposed to give out.

the club has a capacity of 1,200 in case that helps you decide what that "small number" might be.

Okay, so it looks like that's it then, get down there early and try to look more deserving than the rest of the mob.

it'll have nothing to do with looking deserving, and everything to do with being at the front of the line, i.e. getting there early enough.  i'm strongly suspect 930 staph will keep things orderly and people in line, literally.  do not expect a mob scene, it's first come first served.

gaddam that's a brilliant idea.  i have tickets, but i'd show up early just to grill and hang out.  i have no other plans on monday, i'd be quite happy to make the 30th anniversary party an all-day event.  too bad having a beer on the sidewalk would be severely frowned upon.  come to think of it - how legal is it to set up a grill on a public sidewalk??

the club has a capacity of 1,200 in case that helps you decide what that "small number" might be.

i'm with you on that, but i suspect the club will be filled to its legal capacity.  it's only fair that as many folks as possible have a chance to get in on the fun.  the club will be emptier during the early hours of this event, so do your roamin' then :)
Title: Re: Club's 30th anniversary?
Post by: eltee on May 28, 2010, 02:18:20 pm
to be honest, I was surprised you had not asked if it was possible to oversell a free show. ;)

yeah, i was figuring that it might still be a roaming type of event, since not all want to see every performer. Or is that just me? ;) And, some people may just be stopping by for the party aspect?
Hoping there's a line up provided though, not to be pushy / rude, just trying to plan my evening.

is the parking lot open too?
Title: Re: Club's 30th anniversary?
Post by: sweetcell on May 28, 2010, 02:37:27 pm
actually, the last-minute and free aspect might ensure that it is a roaming event.  i'll bet that some people will drink too much on monday afternoon and say "fuck it, don't feel like going anymore and the ticket was free so nothing is lost".  others might get caught in traffic, or have a change in plans/overlooked plans, etc... and other than the sooper-dooper mystery headliner, none of the acts on the bill have a huge/rabid following so people might leave after their favorite leaves the stage.  if the order on the announcement is correct, i could see how ted leo --> bob mould --> mystery headliner might not be everyone's cup of tea.

i remain hopeful.

Just curious - but I know a # of forum members who didnt get an email. What was the criteria (if there was any). And yes, we've been on here for awhile (although most of us no longer post regularly - excluding me).

I was hoping to get tix from the email blast, but that didnt pan out (assuming that by noon we were given notice). a bit bummed. yes im currently in NYC, but I used to go to a ton of shows when I was down there. And I was going to try and make the trip with a friend. Ah well.

Enjoy the show. And anyone that has an intention of offering me a +1, dont worry about it. The Pysch Furs will be awesome. Cant wait to catch them up here.

I predict a sellout, but very manageable crowd.  People will be coming and going all day.  Plenty of people won't show up (one of the mixed-blessings of "free").  Despite the overall killer lineup, there aren't any really big names listed to draw the masses.   I think we'll be able to move around just fine most of the evening.

agreed.  i have the same feeling about freefest - is should be practically-freefest.  on the upside, free = more no-shows = more room inside.  on the other hand, it sucks that some people who want to go won't be allowed, while other who are allowed won't go.  if the club insists on making it free, have people donate $10 to a cause (maybe even offer a choice of causes).

That was from 2005.   Interesting about Ontario theater.  Only show I saw there was General Public with the awful openers the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.  Who could have predicted after that show that they would have become even moderately successful.

You're not thinking of me or  anyone glad to get in for free!.. There may be some people who are getting on the list who may choose not to go but how many?

Moreover, don't you think the 930 Club has taken that into account and awarded a few more tickets?

Really its a birthday party and we're invited NOT sold a ticket to it.

It's a great thing.  I went to the free HFS Nutcracker thing they had at the club in 1999 (I think).  IIRC, I remember it was Tori Amos, Beck, and Foo Fighters.

It was 3/4 full at best - more like 1/2 full by the end.

Or commenting that no shows to a sold out event is a bad thing. To me, that's a good thing.

Only on this board would people argue that it should be a paid event instead of a free event where they THEMSELVES are invited!

ah, i see that you're familiar with the concept  ;D

the fact that we won't know set times until monday means that we can't determine a meet-up time until monday.  should you want to meet up, please check this thread as soon as set times are announced on monday.  i'll do my best to pick a time that isn't too offensive - don't want to call it for a time that coincides with a must-see set (LIKE, SAY, CLUTCH.  ya hear me, thatguy?).  i'm thinking something like 7:00, but it will entirely depend on set times.

Forum meetup? Aren't we being redundant? Isn't the whole show basically a forum meetup, since that's how most people got tickets?

I suggest people just wear things we can recognize them by. NKOTB can wear his Wolftrap t-shirt, Joe can wear his Soul Asylum t-shirt, Azag can wear his Tom Petty t-shirt, Dr . Doom can wear his DOOMLINK t-shirt, Jen and Todd from Bound can wear their bondage gear, Sweetcell can wear his t-shirt from that band with the tranny singer, Thatguy can wear his ear thingies, Julian can wear his Walmart gear, and Walkonby can wear his patchouli.

If such a t-shirt existed, it might carry an image like this:

Timing is everything and sadly, time isn't on my side. I have other obligations and there is just no way that I can work it into my schedule. The worst part is (besides missing the event) it's not even for a holiday party or anything else fun. It's that Monday thing. If it were on Sunday instead, I'd be there. Oh, well. I know it's going to be one fantastic shindig!

I got all the invites but didn't even bother for tickets since, unfortunately, there is just no way that I can attend. Didn't think that it was fair to clog up the system just that much more just to see if I could get them. Now I'm wishing that I would have just to give my potential winnings to Walkie. (Probably wouldn't work anyway since it sounds like you have to show ID when picking them up.)

Seth, you really know how to throw a party! Thank you for all the invitations. Better luck (for me) next round. Hope that you enjoy it just as much, if not more, than I know all the attendees will.

Happy 30th 9:30 Club!!!! You're the BEST!!!

as soon as we do know set times, i'll propose a meet-up time.  i'm thinking the break before marti jones and don dixon - please check this thread a little later.

either way, i'll be wearing my orange t-shirt it an atari logo on it.  can't miss it - come say hi.

About The Author:
Michael Darpino: Michael is a former bare-knuckle street-fighter who splits his free time between defending the little guy and championing the underdog. He has been haunting the concert halls, dive bars, and greasy spoons of DC for the last 16 years. His interests include live rock music, researching obscure military/political conflicts, and good hamburgers. agreed.  not much i want to miss either.

alternative: meet-up upstairs, maybe at the upstairs bar?  that way people could continue to hang out together once the next band goes on (unless it's clutch, of course.  see?  i'm learning!)

From Henry Rollins Blog:

Tomorrow morning, I will fly from Portland OR to Dulles International and go to the 9:30 Club in DC to host the 30th anniversary of the club. Many bands will hit stage and do short sets. I will be bringing them on and off stage. I got the list of acts sent to me yesterday but the e-mail said that I am not at liberty to disclose any details, which is odd, you would have thought they would have wanted to get the word out as best they could. The e-mail expressly asks that none of the acts or set times, so I won?t. Should be a good night. I don?t know what one needs to do to get a ticket but it would be worth trying if you are in the area.

looks like an organized meet-up in the backbar won't be possible.

i'll generally be hanging out on the floor* by the cash-only bar (on the right-hand side as you face the stage).  during the early portion of the evening, before it gets too crowded, it should be easy to make your way there.  feel free to come hang out and chat between acts.  me = bright orange atari t-shirt.

Those new to the band, especially those much younger, just wouldn't truly understand how inovative they were at the time. Kind of a little bit like Gary Nueman just before Gary Nueman was all the rage... yet, different. Very arty, and I don't mean that sloppy, anything goes bullshit Art school stuff.

looks like an organized meet-up in the backbar won't be possible.

i'll generally be hanging out on the floor* by the cash-only bar (on the right-hand side as you face the stage).  during the early portion of the evening, before it gets too crowded, it should be easy to make your way there.  feel free to come hang out and chat between acts.  me = bright orange atari t-shirt.

* i do not mean "hangout out on the floor" literally.  well, not until 9 or 10 pm, anyway  :o

That bar takes credit cards now, btw!

Cool night, even if I only caught half of it. But was a little disappointed the Furs bailed, and that Trouble Funk played the same song for 45 minutes as I waited to see if anything else was happening. Couldn't someone else have done better? And 3/4 of Fugazi was in the house, find a damn bass player and get on stage for christ's sake. What's it gonna take to get them to do something?

Thanks for the freeness Seth!!

Thanks to everyone for all the effort it took to make this happen. Great show/time. Jaguar, re: TDU, a friend who saw them in '79 or '80 said he thought they sounded more polished last night whereas during the original run, they  were more of a no wave band.

Great show, perfect sized crowd (full but there was actually lots of room to move around, not lose your friends, get a beer and come back).  Said hi to Sweetcell, Bombay and Doom.  Phillidan, I spoke to a guy I thought was you because he was belting out "Places That Are Gone" -- just so you know, there definitely was singing along going on!  Saw Smylie in his t-shirt but didn't get to say hi.

Alas I did end up missing The Fleshtones, heard good reviews.  Tommy Keene was so great, as was Mould and Scream doing Bad Brains.  I left near the end of Trouble Funk hoping I wasn't going to miss some big jamfest...it was a school night and I was beat, and happy.

Thanks to EVERYONE at the club, and I hope like hell there aren't any complaints over what was a great, well run, free show.

Missed TDU and most of the Fleshtones because of a fire at a tire place on NY Ave.  Had that whole area gridlocked.  Still a great night, bummer on the Furs though I just saw them there last year, left before TF as friend had to get to Towson.

;D  Had a blast last night.  Thanks again to Seth and the 930 crew.  The no-shows REALLY missed out but there were enough people there and yet plenty of elbow room.  Plus the wife finally got a cupcake.

Hard to pick a single highlight as it really was a series of highlights - Clutch, Grohl's solo Everlong & Bad Brains covers with Pete Stahl, Bob Mould's Husker/Sugar/solo set, Tommy Keene (still really, really good)...., Slickees, damn it was all really good.

Had to take a seat upstairs during the last half of T-Funk's set, tho.  My feet were killing me.

Here's my take, fwiw.

Arrived at 7:20, stood outside for 10 minutes waiting for friend. Stood close enough to Seth to overhear him as Geraldo or some other Fox personality was interviewing him outside the club. Nice green shoes, Seth. And thanks again for letting me in. :)

Didn't see any of the bands before Keene, but still feel qualified to review them. Pretty decent, the whole lot.

Went in at 7:30 to the strains of Keene. Nice to see Tommy letting his grampa play the drums. Even nicer to see the sticks ceded to Tommy's young nephew. Did the kid get a backstage lesson from Growl? Sounded good, as did the whole band. Funny, though, I always thought these guys were supposed to be a middle of the road Britpop band. They had a bit more crackle than I was expecting.

Went to Backbar for a beer, came back up, and Ian Mackaye was playing a Dave Matthew-esque tune, and he had HIS niece on drums. Joe Marshmallow (nicely clad n his very retro, brand new straight off the streets of Rockville Soul Asylum t-shirt I might add) was looking up adoringly, it really was touching. Figured I'd have a chance to talk to Joe later, but never saw him. Probably left early with the disappointed masses who only got to hear one Foo song. Right, Joe?

After a few minutes, Henry Rollins appears, and man has he let himself. Shaves his head now too, so maybe he's straightedge now. And the piercings and other body mods, nice touch Hank. Hank introduces Seth, who introduces Justin Jones as the next big thing. I'm not sure about that (this guy got the gig because he's Seth's nephew, right?), but anybody that dedicates a song to farmers is a-ok in my book.

While Jones was playing, I noticed a dork in an orange "can't miss me" Atari t-shirt with some hot eye candy on his arm. As Jones ends and the strains of Old 97's kick in, I muster up the courage to hit Sweetcell up for the beer I won in a bet five (or more?) years ago, but have never collected because our music tastes have never merged and brought us into the same room until now. Thanks again for the beer, Sweetcell. Nice to finally meet you, and your lovely wife. And folks, Vansmack was right. Sweetcell and I both lucked out in the wife department.

Then the real Henry Rollins shows up, and the fake Henry Rollins is relegated back to his local celebrity status. Henry introduces Bob Mould, and it becomes apparent that Henry's missing 30 pound of muscle has been grafted onto Bob's tummy, and it aint muscle anymore. God bless middle age.

Then Henry is back and intros Ted the leprauchaun. His set really made me hungry for some Lucky Charms...I had to settle for Golden Grahams when I got home.

Then Henry introduces the third solo middle aged white guy with guitar in a row, Dave Growl. I have to admit I can't name a single Foo song, so the idea of a bunch of bros singing along to Foos wasn't really calling out, and a 10 minute pee break was. But then a great thing happened. Dave ceded the spotlight to some guys who looked more like government workers than Dave Growl, and the game was on. Definitely one on the highlights.

Am I forgetting anyone? Was Clutch next? We went downstairs for another beer. The lovely bartendress actually must have seen me for the beer geek I was, and let me try three generous samples (unprompted) in addition to the beer I finally settled on. Very nice!

Went upstairs and heard the last Clutch song. Much better than I had anticipated.

Oh wait, Pietasters were before Clutch. Second special mystery guest of the night. American Idol champ Taylor Hicks fronting the Pietasters. They played the second best song ever about Maggie May. Side bar story: Years ago, we went to a free show by the Pietasters at one of the Fairfax parks. This local
politician, who was the wife of (then) U.S. Congressman Tom Davis, introd them and said " Ladies and Gentleman, the Piemasters!"

WAs it Trouble Funk next? They were awesome. Definitely the highlight of the night. Definitely Julian's worst nightmare. Was that Ted Leonsis not dancing up in the penalty box? He was later replaced by a rather stiff but at least dancing Barack.

I think that was it. I drove home down 395 in my 95 Saturn blasting Rod Stewart's Greatest Fucking Hits, which really capped it off. Thanks to all who made the event happen. I guess that's were the $7 Yuengling money all went.

It was indeed a great show.  I was on the left side of the stage, right in front of the area where the staff walks to the backstage.  I must say there was a couple of cute staff girls who were working that area  ;D  Ended up drinking too much when I said I would just have a few.  The bartender I had was really sweet.  The beer I wanted was out until they changed it.  I ordered some other beer the rest of the night.  When I went to close out my tab she remembered my original beer and gave it to me on the house.  Great staff  ;D  It wasn't too crowded in there, which was a good thing.  Everyone was good.  Never seen Clutch before and they were really good.  Dave/Scream was awesome.  Never seen Bob Mould either and he sounded good.  Trouble Funk played a long set.  Just like one person said earlier they sounded like they played the same song for 45 mins haha.  Overall great night.  Thanks Seth and staff for a good time.   ;D

Very different (better) than my expectations.  Ran into an old college friend, and got to shake hands with Ted Leo and tell him i love his music.  goodtimes.

Was that Ted Leonsis not dancing up in the penalty box?

That was Mr. Leonsis up there.  Right before Clutch I was feeling particularly talkative and kindly asked him from down on the floor to part ways with Gilbert Arenas.  His response was a "now-now" shaking of the index finger.

He was later replaced by a rather stiff but at least dancing Barack.

I thought the guy in front was of me was going to go out of his skin when he saw the Obama cutout.  He kept shaking his fist at the lady holding it up to show his total and complete disapproval of our president.

Not that I know of.  I know Seth was not behind the drum kit in 2000 or the 2005 9:30 Club Foo Fighters appearances.  25th anniversary show I didn't attend.  The only time I've ever seen Seth behind the drumkit at 9:30 Club was when Live played after headlining the HFStival in 2001.  The show started at 1:30 a.m. in the morning.  Ended at around 3 or 3:30 a.m.

what a fun, fun night.  the club had a great vibe going on.  people seemed a little friendlier and staph were in an extra-good mood.  music was fun and changes were fast-paced so we we never left waiting for long (helped by the fact that all performers used the same amps and drum kit).  as mentioned by others, getting to and from the middle of the floor was a piece of cake all night long.

musical highlights: CLUTCH!!!, the fleshtones and the slickees were fun, tommy keene was more rockin' than expected, the evens playing up on the balcony, and i'll never tire of hearing grohl do a solo version of "everlong" from 20 feet away.  he was good but i didn't feel that i connected with bob mould.  justin jones is very talented but i feel his sound is sorta typical country-rock - he might need a little something to distinguish himself in order to really break out.  to those who said "trouble funk played one song for 45 minutes" - have you never heard go-go before?  i didn't take much note of what BT was spinning between sets (spent most of that time talking), and left as TF was finishing up.  did anyone stick around after the live music?  i heard that BT was going to spin for a while longer and get in to his more typical techno fare.

met for the first time mr. ford, mobius, and eros.  old(er) acquaintances that had to deal with me included bombay, bags, joe, callat703, and none other than thedirector.  hope i'm not forgetting anyone, if i am blame it on the dogfish raison d'etre.  yikes.  hearty back-slaps to thatguy, madgypsy, samfresh, and all the other AMAZING staph members who made last night happen.

loved your review, james.  i suspect that people who weren't there might be scratching their heads at some of your descriptions.  too bad, they should have been there.

seth also joined thievery corps one year for their annual christmas shows, he played percussions.

thank you, 930 club, for a great night last night - and all the great nights over the years.  here's to 30 more.

Seth plays drums every now and then.    It's always fun, but it happens enough that it's not a huge surprise.

I had a GREAT time last night.   So many great moments.   Grohl + Scream covering Bad Brains songs...Tommy Keene and Seth sitting in with Marti/Dixon... Ted Leo covering 3.... the back-to-back party of The Fleshtones/Slickee Boys...Tommy Keene being much rowdier than I expected... the mighty Trouble Funk...Mould's powerful mini-set...wow.  Rollins is the perfect show for something like this.  A hell of a show.

Thanks to Seth and everyone for putting this together.   Well done!

indeed it was.

question: what were alcohol sales like last night?  when not over-packing the place, i wonder if the reduction in number of tickets sold is offset by the increase in drink receipts?  when the club is packed it's harder to make it to the bar, one worries about losing their spot, etc = lower bar sales, you'd think.

Thanks to everyone at the 9:30 Club for putting on a very memorable event as well as thanks for the blueballs of the 15 min Clutch set ;) hehe

BT was suppose to spin a lot longer, but since Trouble Funk had the go-go goin' it ate into the time.  Loved it when BT spun "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy before Henry came out to intro Bob.

all of you clutch virgins might notice that you have a beard now.  it's normal.  don't worry.  if they had played an entire set, it would have been longer, fuller, and on fire.  a common side effect of the pure rock fury.

Oh damn if they had unleashed the "Pury Rock Fury," the crowd would have been in total awe. Neil would have had to be more "Careful with that Mic" before the "Electric Worry" and delivered the "Big News" as the audience found some "Spacegrass" before "Escaping from the Prison Planet"

okay I'm done...

Highlight for me was Trouble Funk.  Those guys really know how to put on a show.  Also loved seeing the Slickee Boys and Bob Mould for the first time.  And it was cool seeing Tommy Keene and the Fleshtones for the first time in 25 years.

Really didn't like Clutch at all.  Probably would have left during their set if I knew the Furs weren't playing.  I think Henry Rollins did a great job as the MC.

Really sad no Psychedelic Furs.  Anybody know why they canceled?

Yeah, we stayed till Trouble Funk finished. Went to the backbar to scope out the better beer and catch a breather. And, well, it was Justin Jones playing. Can catch him at Iota once a month...

Sorry I missed you and the other boardies. Randomly caught Bombay in passing, and saw Lily napping in the side room upstairs, but that was about it.

I had one of the best times of my life

I cannot express what a joy that was to have all of these great people in one room in the mood they were in

I am talking about the performers, the staff and...most importantly...YOU

I know it sounds awfully corny & contrived but the 930 Club is really all of you people, and you should be very proud of who you are, because you are the community that we all talk about here

thank you all for a wonderfully magic night, even if you weren't actually there

but...for those who were...well...you know what happened

Per Ted Leonsis' Blog:

9:30 Club 30th Birthday

June 1st, 2010
What a fun night and congratulations to the 9:30 Club for 30 years of great local entertainment.

Henry Rollins was there.

Ted Leo rocked.

Clutch wailed. They were loud and proud.

Dave Grohl surprised folks with an appearance and did Bad Brains songs. We met him and he is a really great guy and nice person.

And Trouble Funk closed it out!

We all had a great time. Thanks Seth Hurwitz who played drums with the Flesh Tones and then on ?Play that Funky Music White Boy? with Trouble Funk.

Trouble Funk ? GoGo music. Wow!!! Set that way back machine on stun!

Rock on.

Dude, that's go-go.  DC style.  As the Washington Post ad used to say, if you don't get it, you don't get it...

Anyway, thanks to Seth for a great night.   It was a generous act to throw a party like that for free. It brought back some great memories of the best parts of my lost youth.

Sorry I missed you, Sock of Red. Saw Bags earlier in the evening. I think I dozed during Clutch-I just couldn't get into them at all. (Don't be hatin' on me you Clutch fans! I appreciated the quality of the musicianship but the music just wasn't to my personal taste.) And the Pietasters allowed for more nap time.

Tommy Keene and Fleshtones were highlights for me. And Dave Grohl.

I just loved that there was such a focus on DC musicians-didn't even mind that Psych Furs cancelled. (I saw them earlier in the year anyway.)

Well looks like I destroyed another computer (this time my netbook) by flipping ice tea on the keyboard..sigh... so I've been using the internets a bit less....lasted all of three months.

Of course thanks to Seth and IMP and the 930 staff for organizing a world class event for us....Being handed the ticket on the way in at the door was a nice touch.

What I'll remember about this was how at one point I had Dante (Black Cat owner) a few feet away  from me (on side of stage) with helmet under one arm, sporting his blue hair and bobbing in glee to the Scream/Dave Grohl set...That was the special moment if too short.

I'll also remember at one point on other side of the side stage seeing Henry Rollins, Ian Mackaye, Bob Mould , the bassist from Scream, Liz the booker for IMP, etc. hanging out.. Quite a group.

I'll remember Liz with her clip pad at one point running by the left hand bar to get backstage..

I'll remember Seth on the VIP box checking out Justin Jones.. what he sees in the guy I'll never know!

I'll remember Ian Mackaye once again turning the worst performance of the night and just getting by on that built in cred he's got.. The Evens set was beyond boring. If it wasn't Mackaye would anyone have cared?

On the minus side I'll remember Clutch being told to end their set NOW when they'd just about started a song and where getting going only to make way for Trouble Funk to take 30 minutes to set up and mug for pictures. I guess thats just the way it is... TF did have the crowd going so maybe it was for the best but.. The Obama cutout or what have you during Drop the Bomb was cool..

To me the evening wasn't about the music- which wasn't really all that much up my alley- but about celebrating the 930 and by extension DC so ultimately about us which is as it should be.

my story is simple, and perhaps a bit sad.  on my way to the show from my forest abode, i made it 20 minutes when i noticed a sound, a strange sound at that.  as if the road had suddenly changed grooves on my needle skip traction.  i had to pull off in a hurry to check out to see.  yes . . . there it was, a front wheel flat tire.  and not just a hole, or a leak with it's hiss and you know you can't make it much further, but rather a slice or a gash and my tire was whole wheat shredded.  on a bolt.  it was a bolt in the road that i had hit and it destroyed a new tire i had for two months.  i knew right then and there that it was no way i was attempting to drive 2 hours up and 2 hours back on a doughnut.  and it cost me $150.  oh yeah . . . as i was changing it, just to be nice, the clouds opened up into a pour down water bucket that enforced even more that ole murphy's law chestnut, "hah hah hah human, you are not going, so have some rain pain to wash away your baby tears."  the end.  another time forumers.

good write-up!  had me re-living the evening.  one small factoid correction, because i'm annoyingly nit-picky this way: you wrote "Bob Mould simply owned the stage. He stood stage right and played unaccompanied."  he was actually stage left, also know as house right.  "stage left" and "stage right" are always from the performer's perspective, not the audience's (example (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_%28theatre%29#Stage_directions)).

i'll stop now  :-X

I'm happy to read that Clutch has finally made believers out of several of you. And all it took was a free show. I think over the years there's been a thought that turning you folks onto Clutch was this conspiracy that eddie, thatguy and myself cooked up to trick you into listening to some crappy band. That just couldn't be further from the truth. We see and hear literally hundreds and thousands of bands a year here and there just isn't another band that is as consistently amazing show after show, year after year. So to those of you that liked what you saw and heard, come see them in all their glory the next time they come through 9:30 and those of you that remain non-believers, sorry we weren't able to indoctrinate you, but hey it's your loss.

I'll remember Ian Mackaye once again turning the worst performance of the night and just getting by on that built in cred he's got.. The Evens set was beyond boring. If it wasn't Mackaye would anyone have cared?

I noticed a bunch of people around me looking at their watches and band lists during the Evens set.   It was definitely a come-down after Tommy Keene.   I mean, musically they are talented and interesting, but there is still that Puritan spirit that underlies most things Dischord -- it's a bit like switching from reading Jack Kerouac to Nathaniel Hawthorne.   I don't think the Evens have ever played the 930, and has Fugazi ever?  Maybe not since Minor Threat has Ian performed on the '30s stage?

I think my favorite moment was when Tommy Keene joined Marti Jones and Don Dixon on stage, and Seth got in on drums.  It reminded me of the spontaneous spirit of the early years of the club.   Something you might have seen at dc space, actually.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, and IMO the two quotes above me are silly, with HUTCH's being downright ridiculous and laughable, IMO of course.  The Evens set was great, wether it was your cup of tea or not should have been kept to yourself, again IMO. Anything MacKaye does will have cred. He's earned it, deal with it. Fugazi has played the 9:30 on V street. I know because I was there.

The whole night was a celebration of the great 9:30 club which has been supporting and showcasing the eclectic variety of what the amazing DC scene has offered, does offer, and will continue to offer, whay can't you just let it be what it is? Sometimes people have to interject negativity no matter what the situation may be. Blows my mind.

I'm sorry to rain on your Ian Mackaye is DC God and you must love everything he does even if its boring parade.

My post was very positive. It was a great night. I thank Seth for it..I enjoyed it all.

There were better performances and worst performances: the Evens set happened to be a bore.. so what? Its the end of the world for you if someone thinks the Evens set is boring?

Deal with it man.

I've got 20 bucks that says Ian Mackaye has a small penis.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Dear IMO,

Have you spent any time on this board? No one keeps their opinions to themselves. And Sir Mackaye is hardly above reproach, he's as fair game as James Ford's wife or Julian's, er, everything. IMO

I missed The Evens, and while I'm glad that piece of DC history was represented, sort of, if they sucked they sucked. IMO. Every show has its highs and low. IMO

i thought the evens were fine - for 15 minutes.  not sure they would have held my attention much longer.  i liked their set-up on the balcony, so they offered something visually different.  i like ian's stories, probably more than the music he played.

i also think that for some people here, ian stirs up too much emotion to be able to appreciate on his current merits (or objective lack thereof).  but that's just, like, my opinion, maaaaaan.

If people didn't have O's there would be no need for this board.

In answer to your first round.

Yes. Obviously. I'm aware of that. Did not know 'that' about James Ford's wife . And yes it was IMO. Thought I would just stress that point. Sorry it offended you.

I agree every show has it's highs and lows. But in my naive, puritanical mind, I just assumed this would be one show that would be given a pass from anything negative because of how great it was, and what it stood for  overall. Obviously I was wrong. Definitely not just about The EVENS, more for ALL the nitpicky complaints I have read. So continue to flame me guys, this is the last I'm going to comment on the subject.

Your mistake is in thinking that independent/critical thinking is a "negative" thing that sometimes requires a "pass."  Now run along and practice your Fugazi dance.

my first hearing of the dischord sound was seeing the evens @ fort reno in 2005 and i think they are amazing.  real hooks, harmonies, dynamics, arrangements, musicality.   you get older, you sit down, you say more with less - what's wrong with that?  i've gone back to check what i've missed, and it's incredible as well, but this is just  a more mature thing.

I  have seen former Mackaye projects like Embrace and Fugazi and they never did anything for me.  The Evans seem all right.

Really I think Clutch is one of the worst bands I have ever seen but people on here seem to like them so go figure.  Different people like different stuff.

yes, it has all of those things, and intellectually I can watch them play and say "that's impressive."  And it still does nothing for me.  Music for me is more than the sum of the pieces, and something's missing there.   The "keep it to yourself" attitude of fans like Davyboy certainly doesn't help, but that's not the main factor.

It's definitely not "just a more mature thing."

Nothing really new to add, but thanks to all the people behind the 9:30.  A thing that sort of struck me about the Anniversary show (probably more accurately 'Reunion Show' as it felt not unlike a family or school reunion) was that there seemed to be a pervading positive vibe - an affection born from the varying shared histories of the crowd with the Club and/or each other and by extension DC - and each performance served to illuminate (or be illuminated by) that sense of affection.  I got there at 7:30ish to the sound of 'Windfall' over the PA and everything that followed - literally everything . . .through to BT playing a nice high energy set to a handful of people) was thoughtful, inspired and cool.  After Henry Rollins intro, seeing Ian McKaye grooving to Trouble Funk didn't seem the least bit strange (although the thought of Rayful Edmund grooving to the Beach Boys on the Mall July 4 did cross my mind as an equivalent) . . .and at the end of a night where diverse musical styles seemed unified, it made perfect sense.  I'll just add that while I enjoyed every set, I thought Bob Mould in particular crushed it.

Forgot to mention this earlier...

All the cluelessness about BT explains why I never got any responses regarding BT whenever I've brought him up in the past. Had assumed that others just didn't like him which totally baffled me since I know he'd appeal, at least somewhat, to a good number of you. Maybe it was just him being an unknown issue.

Anyway, I recommend this album (http://www.amazon.com/Movement-Still-Life-BT/dp/B00004TIQ6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276240882&sr=1-6) of his that I know a lot of you would enjoy.

He was actually my least favorite part of the show.  He started with fairly generic 80s hits (I think he actually played a Fixx song twice - once would have been more than enough) then went into dance music that totally isn't my thing.  I didn't think he caught the vibe of what the early days of the club were all about.  I found myself wishing that Twangirl was dj-ing.
