Aside from Julian's post, this was a nice little treat after a long ass meeting.  Man, I'd be kind of psyched for a Greedo voice, regardless of how little I understand of Huttese.

I couldn't decide between the pancake molds or the cookie cutters, so I ordered both.

I picked up my order today, and the pancake molds are WAY better than the cookie molds.  If you're not willing to go all out on the decorations for the cookies, then you won't likely enjoy them.  The pancake molds on the other hand are AWESOME and a lot bigger than I thought.

NKOTB and Smackie, I've got a serious question for both of you. Please answer this honestly. Do either of you; or, in your case Smackie, did you; plan to make these pancakes and cookies yourself? Especially the cookies. What I mean is 'you', not the ettes in your household. The pancakes are more believeable because, for some odd reason, men (at least straight ones), tend to not mind making breakfast foods but, unless they have to, will avoid any real cooking, especially baking. Unless they are making pot brownies, of course. Baking cookies is just not something I can easily believe that either of you would do more than maybe once just to try out your new toys.

Now if I'm wrong, hey, more power and respect to you!  ;)

Jag, sexist much?

I'm actually a much better baker than I am a cook, and Smackette will be the first to admit that I'm a better baker than she is.  I've attemted to improve my cooking skills, but I just don't have the passion that I see from other good cooks - like Venerable for example, who's a damn good cook because he takes it as a challenge.

I make breakfast nearly 100% of the time and make about 30% of our dinners, mostly because of smackette's brutal schedule as a resident.  That being said, the impetus for Smackette encouraging the SW pancake molds is for me to make pancakes for dinner, which thus far I have been reluctant to do.  We actually did not end up taking home the cookie cutters because the cookies by themsleves (without decorations) are boring and decorating cookies is not my thing. I blame Williams and Sonoma for that because the cookies in their store looked awesome and I could never recreate them.

That being said, I bake a lot of desserts, most recently a strawberry shortcake from scratch that looks something like this (though my cake is much more flaky....):

Wow, Smackie. You amaze me! Good for you! I did know that Venerable did some cooking; at least, bakes a lot of apple pies.

Honestly though, most men that I've known just won't cook or bake unless they are living alone and have to. The worst offenders tend to be the older ones, like closer to my age... and even older. Think it was the way they were brought up to believe that it's a woman's place to cook and clean for the man. The generations younger are so much better about that sort of stuff. Think the younger women stood up for themselves and demanded more sharing of the loads.

Believe me, I could tell you lots of stories regarding lots of different men that I've known or known of whom it would kill to even think of helping out with any sort of cooking. In fact, I broke up with one guy whom I was living with, in part, because of that sort of behavior. The closest he ever got to cooking was fixing himself a bowl of cereal!

Rhett cooks too, I think. Seems he's mentioned it a few times.

I love men who cook.

Still waiting for NKOTB to weigh in.  :D
(Now be honest, NKOTB.  ;) )

I lend my hand as much as possible in the kitchen.  There are two main roadblocks though:

1) My wife is still generally home with the kid during the day, so she's ready to hand him off to me when I get home at night.  I certainly don't mind (it's nice to come home and see his smiling face), but it then ties me up a bit too much from making dinner, since babies and boiling water don't mix.

2) My wife is an absolute control freak in the kitchen by her own admission.  Even when it is my night to cook, she tends to make about 75% of the meal because I don't do it right.  Not that the food isn't good..it's just she has her ways.

I do have a wheelhouse of meals that I handle solo, and that's always expanding.  But I'd be lying if I said my wife didn't handle a good 85% of the cooking.

Still waiting for NKOTB to weigh in.  :D

That's an important part.  If my wife cooks, I handle the dishes.  When I cook, I handle the dishes.  And I'm the clean freak of the two of us.  We keep things pretty equal.

I cook 50% of the meals, do my own laundry and ironing, mow the lawn, rake the leaves, trim the bushes and trees, and serve as my soon to be three year old's play buddy. But my wife still does alot more work than me.

Cooking is one of the easiest household chores. Try staining a deck. Now there's a real chore. And my wife is finishing doing that all on her own.

Rhett cooks too, I think. Seems he's mentioned it a few times.

Strangely enough, I love washing dishes. My very favorite household chore. I've even done them at other people's homes while visiting even though I didn't eat there just because they were there and I had the urge. LOL. It's a water thing. I love playing around in water. Also, I'm one of those cooks who is obsessed with cleaning the dishes as I go along. Hate most of the other chores but I'd gladly do all the dishes whether I did the cooking or not. I like to cook too but not everyday. And as I've learned through experience, when I'm the one expected to always do all of the cooking, my actual cooking will dramatically drop off... unless I'm the only one home.

NKOTB, believe it or not, I haven't the slightest problem with the balance that you and your wife have with the cooking duties. It all comes down to the levels that both people are comfortable with and expectation levels. Obviously, you both have it worked out to what works best for your family. The kind of guys that I was refering to are the ones who refuse to help out in the kitchen and expect females to cater to them. Especially the types who won't even try to balance it out with other sorts of duties. Again, in this day and age, it usually is more of a generational thing but suspect there are still some hold outs. I've got a relative whom I can always tell his relationship status just by observing his fluctuating weight. One of those who would rather starve than dare cook a meal. It's too girly or gay, you know.  ::)  What this fool can't get through his head is that most of we women tend to love men who cook. (There, I've done it. Exposed one of we ladies' secrets.  ;) )

NKOTB, you never did tell us who is going to bake those cookies.  ;D

VOB files in the video_ts folder are exact copies of the disc. There are programs that will convert the folder into a single file.

I'm with Thirsty on this, at least for playback on TV.  Storage space is so cheap now that I no longer compress movies.

Depending on what device you use for playback, VOB rip to MPEG2 (single file conversion) for standard DVDs (about 1.5-3GB per movie), .mt2s to 1080p H.264-encoded MP4 for Blu-Ray that comes in around 15GB-40GB depnding on the movie.

That shouldn't be a surprise as I have not hidden my thoughts on tangible media.  When there is something I think I should own, I purchase the 1080p digital file, otherwise I stream/rent HD files from various sources.

On the rare occasion, I rip blu-ray movies with a laptop into digital files, usually to replace something I originally owned on standard dvd.

I do not see a reason to buy a blu-ray player when my Xbox/Tivo/HTPC are all capable of doing everything a blu-ray player is capable doing, short of new audio codecs that my stereo doesn't even support anyway...

I just downloaded the trailer this morning.  I think if this came out when I was a kid (meaning under 30), I would've gone bonkers for it.  Now I feel I'm a little too old...and my son is way too young to justify me getting it "for him."

Funny, the Kinect was the selling point for my wife for us to get an Xbox, and it's the thing I use the least.

Maybe "too old" isn't the right word; it's probably "too realistic" in that I know I wouldn't play it much.  I'm a pretty fickle gamer...games need to be super involved AND nerdy to catch me and hold me for an extended period of time (see Batman: Arkham Asylum...which is old but absolutely amazing).

That said...I'm still a sucker, and will get this as a gift at some point.  Just like my boycott on buying Star Wars on Blu Ray or seeing it in 3-D will go right out the window as soon as they come out.

I was there.  It was geeky fun.  Wore the shirt I posted below...

It was kinda funny because there were a lot of Star Wars people who knew very little about baseball, then a lot of baseball people who all of a sudden realized they knew very little about Star Wars (all things considered of course...).  I would definitely go again as the Giants big screen is amazing and so was the sound.

I was going to ask you how you liked it.  I thought I saw you at the show, but realized it's been years since I met you at that Dino Jr show, so I got weirded out about asking a random guy if he was walkonby from the 9:30 forum.

Pretty fun show, I thought...especially that Fugazi cover.  The crowd was really weird though.  What was with Stone Cold Steve Austin crowd-surfing?  And why was I surrounded by couples seemingly on first dates with no interest in the show?  I never really expected making out at a DM show...

FYI, Rhett...more attractive women than I would've thought, but also tons of dorks.  Oh, and more black dudes than I've seen in the last ten shows I've been to combined.  Didn't see that coming.

greatest show of my life.

in love with u street.

area was great.

nice to feel a trip back into time.

loved the two black women in front of me going full on bat shit crazy screaming at anybody daring to slam or push them, and the one guy screaming back . . . "this is punk rock, what the fuck?"

loved the guy who looked like stone cold, though he looked like a real fucking prick in real life.

i wore a shirt that had a kitten with its head cut off, to the side.

i like tall cans of red stripe at the bar.  bartenders were hot.

new bass player won my vote . . . and then fucking some.  mvp of the night.

opening band kicked serious ass, bought their cd and talked to the poor guy selling merch.

i don't think i've ever listened to zola jesus.

the fugazi cover sounded too creepily like fugazi was actually playing it.  bizarre.

best show of my life.

Yeah, he was great.  Plus, the old school Ween shirt didn't hurt things.  I think I had that one from the 12 Golden Country Greats tour...too bad I bought it when I was fat.

Was talking to a guy next to me who had seen them before, and he randomly showed me a text from a friend asking if they would play Stuart.  Five minutes later...bam.  That ruled.

new bass player won my vote . . . and then fucking some.  mvp of the night.

JAGUAR: You're killing me...I like STAR WARS, not STAR TREK.  But that's still pretty sweet.

I actually thought this was a spoof when it came through my twitterers on Friday (mind you I was hammered), but when I discovered it was a real, thoughtful response it made me want to kiss a princess who might be my sister.

I didn't see it until I was 4 as well, but it was after Close Encounters came out.  It was early 1978 and my folks took us all to the Drive-in thinking the kids would just sleep.  I was hooked.

I saw the next two on opening Day at Mann's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd with the Characters walking about.

I saw the next three at the Uptown on Conn Ave, front row balcony at the midnight showing because the staff used to come to the P's all the time and they hooked me up.

come on man, you don't know your bible stuff

1 Kings 17:21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, ?O Lord my God, let this child's life come into him again.? 22 And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, ?See, your son lives.?

My parents walked out of Rouge One because They said it was boring and The scenes were Too dark.

My kids thought it was boring and we are all confused by what was going on half the time. Neither kid liked it very much, and I didn't either. But part of it was that I was constantly having to get up and get someone water or take someone to the bathroom or deal with whatever the fuck issue some child was having. I was in charge of 5 kids at the theater so it was a recipe for disaster.

I went to see it again with no kids and liked it quite a bit more. I still don't think it's a very good movie. The way it just stomps all over its own jokes/punchlines is so ham-handed, and I don't find any of the characters interesting in the slightest. But it was pretty neat how it built up and then slotted neatly into 'Star Wars'.

So I went from giving it a 4/10 to a 7/10. Has some great parts, has some stupid parts, story is good, characters are mediocre, kind of how Return of the Jedi exists in my mind.

Meanwhile, I went back and re-watched Force Awakens and that is the far superior movie. There are things about that one I don't love, like the whole "MY SON" thing that Han does, but it's a solid continuation and I *do* like the characters in that one.

I am not sure if I am less shocked that young children didn't know what was going on in a movie rated PG-13, or that someone that took 5 young children missed most of the movie.

Actually neither of those things seem particular surp-- oh, I see what you did there.

Well, to clarify, three of the kids are 12 years old and two are 8 years old, both of whom are younger brothers to the 12 yr olds. So they're all growing up in a Fast & Furious world and are pretty sophisticated when it comes to movies, relative to their age groups.

But I can tell you that when I saw it the first time, I had zero idea how Forest Whitaker fit into any of the plot (I missed that it was him who stuck his head down the hole where the girl was hiding) and I couldn't really figure out how Diego Luna was involved (missed his "I've been fighting in the rebellion since I was 6" speech).

I also thought the blond evil Director guy was two different people because in his outdoor scenes, his face was often twisted and animated and when he was inside talking to his superiors, he was much more calm and stoic. So I thought there were two evil directors, one of which was an outdoorsy loose canon and then his more buttoned-up doppelganger inside.

Also, I really didn't like how in the first 15 minutes, the movie bounces to like a dozen different locations, all getting subtitles. The original trilogy didn't need to do that because it was clean filmmaking.

oh, nkotb . . . we don't even really know each other, but if you were here, we would talk about Rouge One, and how I went to see it last night for the first time.  It is about to leave all theatres round these parts, so this was a shot at it.

I, well, uhm, I, liked it, not loved it, not "I am having a hard time putting this in the correct position of top 4 best Star Wars films of all time."  It is difficult to say why I did not love worship it, like a kid might, like a die hard 'who cares fan' might.  Maybe I demand the quality of what happened in the last 30 or so minutes of the film, to be a lot more throughout the Star Wars film.  Thrill me from the first 10 minutes to the last.  Yes you can have a story line developing, but this movie was too much of a build story to get to that point of "Go Go Go, ooh, are they going to make it" moments.  And I did like the few nods to the next film, that popped up here and there.

so I posted this thread with some ween news in the beginning . . . and it transformed into a star wars thread, for a long time after that.

just saw it last night, at a pretty good theatre.  I usually only see films, at the Alamo, but this place was a great alternative.  Wanted to see it at the air and space museum in Dulles, but others were not down for that hassle.

I am not sure what to think yet, fully.  I walked out, not even knowing it was 2 and half hours, like a giddy school, nerd . . . glowing in it all and really, really now coming to love kylo ren and the guy who plays him.  I never, knew anything about him before force awakens.  But, everyone, and I mean all of them, I went with, hated it from start to finish and thought it was the worst film of the entire series.  my partner, even said, and I cringe, "give me Jar Jar over this shit."

So again, I am not sure what to really think.  I will go see it again, and really pick it apart, and not watch it as a fan only, who had a few wonderful margaritas before they went.

It definitely left me walking out thinking.  I felt I could have cut about 30-40 minutes of useless attempts at humor scenes out of it and it may have then been the best of the bunch - but it's a Disney movie now.

I also couldn't help but think if they had known about Carrie's death they would have done the whole Laura Dern thing differently (but of course, how could they have known).

I didn't hate it, but only liked, not loved it at this point.  I would like to see it a few more times to get a more full impression of it's place in the series.

I liked Solo, and even more surprising so did The Brand.  She liked it more than most other Star Wars movies...

It did poorly in the theaters because it's 6 months on the heels of The Last Jedi, rather than the annual Xmas release.  Disney has gotten too big and has too much control of large productions.  They are trying to spread Marvel/Star Wars/Disney Animated movies out to maximize profits and guessed wrong on Solo.  I bet it would have done much better had they waited until December.
