Title: Concert Posters
Post by: grotty on January 07, 2004, 03:54:00 pm
Related to the discussion a few weeks ago about concert posters.

The guy over at Shame of Rock n Roll [http://theshameofrockandroll.com/] posted  a few photos I had sent in of some stuff I bought from him framed up. [he's a super cool guy btw, he puts a sticker on the packaging for each poster that he sends out showing what he was listening to while he packed your stuff].

Anyway  - here are the links to 2 I have up. I'll probably get abused for the bands, but I really dig the posters. I have had the White Stripes for a while now:

  http://theshameofrockandroll.com/item.jhtml;$sessionid$4L0HZ5AAAAWY3TZENUFUTIWPERWRJPX0?UCIDs=714837%7C1230104&PRID=1433391 (http://theshameofrockandroll.com/item.jhtml;$sessionid$4L0HZ5AAAAWY3TZENUFUTIWPERWRJPX0?UCIDs=714837%7C1230104&PRID=1433391)

I saw the Datsuns show with the Sights & I think it's really just a great piece of graphic art - especially the reflection in the glasses.

Completely cool, grotty.  I get all wound up about needing to love the band if I'm gonna hang a poster.  That Datsuns poster is great, though.

I have a cool Siouxsie I need to get framed -- you've inspired me!

I have very few of bands that I don't totally love. I just thought that the Datsuns was very cool & it was even "user friendly" enough for me to hang in my work office.

I've been eyeing that White Stripes poster for awhile now.  It seems like there are different versions, one being smaller than the other and unsigned/unnumbered.  Also, some include the Datsuns, some don't.

It is a big one - at least 3' X 2'; signed from a series of 300. Hmmm...ironic that I have the Datsuns on both posters.

Here's the one I really want to get now, but it's proving very elusive:

Have you tried to e-mail Patent Pending?  I've heard that the artists sometimes hold back a handful of prints and will sell them -- albeit at a premium.

I've been searching for these two:

I'll check out that recommendation.

Both of those will (would) look great. One thing I did that made a big difference is that I used a black matte with a colored edge that compliments the dominant color in the poster. You can see the orange in the matte edge in the Datsuns poster if you look close.

That  At The Drive-In  would look sweet with either a blue or orange edge.

i just tend to get most of my posters from ebay, and focus on just a few bands like pavement, gbv and luna.  although i think everyone should eventually have one kozik poster.

that afghan whigs poster is sweet! right now on ebay there is someone selling a bunch of afghan whigs rareties, early signed photos, t-shirts, lps, singles

 they're going for big bucks

this was in the comments section by the guy who designed the whigs poster - looks like you might be out of luck unless it crops up on ebay

"Yeah, that's basically it... I had cut my hand with an X-acto earlier that day. I was carrying a stack of magazines or something over to the photocopier to make this poster and and it just hit me - must make Band Aid into big poster. I peeled it off my hand and blew it up. The blood stain is real and everything. If I was really punk I woulda dumped my own blood into the ink.

I would LOVE to trade with you guys but I have exactly 2 of these + one that is screened on old piece of cardboard which is hanging in my basement. I stupidly gave away so much of my early stuff to friends or whomever asked that I'm down to two or three copies of much of it. I'll trade for other things though... jeffk@subpop.com"

You made me go back & pull out the flat stack I have of framing candidates.

 I've got this Kozik:
  http://shop.fkozik.com/customer/product.php?productid=106&cat=&page=1 (http://shop.fkozik.com/customer/product.php?productid=106&cat=&page=1)

It looks much better 'live'. It's created to look like the old black light posters - even has a felty feel.

I talked to Kozik a bit last year during SXSW. All the other artists there were treating him like royalty.

I've lurked on the gigposter forums.  Kozik posts regularly and they treat him like royalty ther as well.  I'm not too keen on his style, but respect what he's done for the business.  Apparently, he stopped making posters and only does toys now.

There will be another Flatstock at SXSW this year.

Bede -- This GBV poster (http://www.aestheticapparatus.com/products/poster_images/lg_gifs/gbv_lg.gif) is kinda cool.  GBV and Built to Spill seem to be the darlings of gig artists.

Yep, and the crown jewel is the Big Top Halloween LP. It'll be well over $100 when that auction ends in a couple of days.

One day I'll have enough cash to randomly splurge on that. Damn being responsible with my money!

You often can. The best bet I've found is to follow the links in the menu bar off to the left that will take you to the artist's site.

I remember back in manc in the late 70's/early 80's, there were homemade concert posters for for all these "up and coming" bands. Sex Pistols, Clash, Joy Division, Smiths etc etc.....if only I'd had the foresight to take them down and store them...they'd be worth and absolute fortune now.

Oh well....my own fault I suppose.

Read the comments to the left of this poster. Someone's paying him just to  reproduce  vintage posters.

I love that Ryan Adams poster....wish I liked him more (no aspersions cast, I don't know him).

So, this is my  Buzzcocks (http://www.gigposters.com/posters.php?poster=16909) purchase, and this is my  QOTSA (http://www.gigposters.com/posters.php?poster=8452) purchase.  But I gotta say, DAMN they have a lot of good posters.  I could just plaster my place with QOTSA posters, but, I don't love them *that* much.

You know, it never occured to me to hang them at work -- I can keep shopping!

That's funny, though.  I bought art for my office, and it was a BITCH -- so much of what I liked wasn't suitable (nipples showing through gauzy gowns, or some such thing).

oy, can you even f***ing imagine that show?  That's another fun aspect to perusing the posters -- some amazing shows.  Like Bob Mould, Peter Case and American Music Club.  Or Foo Fighters opening for Mike Watt.  Or the "Foo Fighters vs Beastie Boys" show.  DAMN.

Someday you'll be able to say that about the shows you're seeing now. The best possible poster scenario is to have one from the incredible show  you were at .

I tried to get a poster from the Hives show (http://www.philaarts.com/images/hives156200210x24.gif) a couple of years ago, but it is sold out.

 I did get one from a D Plan show (http://www.gigposters.com/posters.php?poster=4516) I attended.

My understanding from reading the gigposters forum is that it is the venue that commissions or authorizes the posters.  Perhaps some aspiring graphic artist who reads these boards wants to see if the 9:30 (or Black Cat) would be up for a gig poster series??

Wow - that Hives poster would be great - I was there too.

I think you mentioned a Modest Mouse/Shins show from a few years ago. That's another good example.

An artist at Flatstock told me that they also sometimes just make posters for bands & venues they like. It's a much more risky venture as you're hoping someone pays you. The preferred approach is to do this only for a while - make a name - and then work on a commission basis. Which is then a sweet deal. They get paid to create - the reproduction is paid for - they get copies - and can then sell those.

i went last weekend. it was pretty interesting, some good posters (les savy fav always wins). there was a trail of dead poster i liked alot too. its just a room with posters on the wall.

the people "working" there ran up into a loft when we walked in. they stayed up there the whole time, or i might have bought something. dunno if they were making out or stoned.

Is there much stuff for sale?
Title: Re: Concert Posters
Post by: godsshoeshine on February 20, 2004, 06:12:00 pm
yes. they were all for sale, there was one wall completely covered, and there were a few stray ones on the other two. kinda pricy, but there is good stuff there.

Some nice posters, but I wasn't crazy about the installation.  One wall has 4-6 posters, well-spaced; but the other wall has about 50-60 posters all on top of one another.  I guess I see the reason for this display.  1-the gallery itself is tiny, like 12'x10' or so.  2-this is how they would be displayed at a booth if you went to a poster show.  But I think the posters are more effective with space between them.

Many of the posters are for sale, but they are asking twice the price that the designers charge.

All in all, I give it a thumbs up.
Title: Re: Concert Posters
Post by: Bags on February 21, 2004, 07:57:00 pm
Ditto to GGW.  There are some really cool posters though (but when you have that many, you're bound to have a number of really good ones).

Pollard, there's a good Mountain Goats poster.

I'd get a couple, but I'm going to check with the artists first.  $40 - $60 does seem to be about double the price, though I noticed some were numbered and had very low series numbers, and some had artist signatures, which may vary in value (more than I know in this genre...)

This print is virtually impossible to find, as Kleinsmith has said he gave away most of his early work, including this particular piece, and only has 2 in his possession. (paraphrased from a quote of his at gigposters.com) "I had cut my hand with an X-acto earlier that day. I was carrying a stack of magazines or something over to the photocopier to make this poster and and it just hit me - must make Band Aid into big poster. I peeled it off my hand and blew it up. The blood stain is real and everything. If I was really punk I woulda dumped my own blood into the ink." - Jeff Kleinsmith

doubtful
in the 18 months of this pandemic, I couldn't ever bring my self to watch any, by any band/performer
but they'll be here in silver springs soon enough, I can wait

I've watched a good amount of streams, but all during the hours of 8pm to about 11pm... Won't be staying up for Ween, however, I'll most likely be navigating myself home from The Anthem during streaming hours.

This maybe of interest as Jeffrey Everett (Rockets Are Red/El Jefe Designs) did several concert posters, etc for local shows.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/picturethispress/let-it-bleed-20-years-of-poster-design-by-jeffrey-everett

Let It Bleed: 20 Years of Poster Design by Jeffrey Everett
The first book devoted to Everett's 20-year career designing concert posters, featuring over 350 examples of his work.

and yes this almost went into the Jeff's appreciation thread

and yes there was quite a kerfuffle here and elsewhere over concerns of copying of design elements by El Jefe in his posters years ago

The work looks impressive as does the book. It’s already fully funded many times over!

Didn’t he used to post here and got called out for appropriating others’ design ideas?

The earliest known use of "kerfuffle" on the board dates to May 2003, by markie

I guess that is why I find it funny. Imagine all the kerfuffle you would create if you said "I am ashamed of coming from the same county as Tony Blair". It just isnt much of a put down.

Out of my budget, but really tempted to buy this...

Edit... it sold out,  I don't have to be tempted

Edit x 2... they added more, I bought one.

Cock could paint this much better, but these are back up for sale.
