Foo Fighters! that would be cool. I like the new stuff.

Hopefully freefest will be 180' difference from that lame sweetlife fest thing

Hoping for more than a festival appearance from the Foos this time around (new album will be great, if the first two released songs are any indication) but a free set wouldn't be too bad.

I think you are wrong about REM at Coachella, unless they were just added  ;D

Can't wait for Freefest! Even though I'm not a huge fan of the bands that played last year, I still had a blast.

I still really regret having to leave before LCD Soundsystem played. Next time I'm not going to let a friends birthday party take priority.  ;D

Any chance of Soundgarden playing FreeFest? I've read they'll do more shows this year, but I don't know what kind they'd be playing.

Queens said they'd be back in the US in July, so I'm really hoping that holds up. I'd much rather see them play a full set at the 9:30.

However, I can easily see them fitting into a FreeFest lineup.

Didnt Dead Milkmen play Sonar last year or the year before?
(2009 at Insubordination Fest)

I vote Aphex Twin, My Bloody Valentine, and DCFC.

While it looks like their latest album won't see the light of day in the US (and thus no US tour), any chance of flying Manic Street Preachers over here for a one-off?

I started coming up with a list of who I'd like to see there, but I'd rather see BRMC, MNDR, QOTSA, Soundgarden, Nicole Atkins, etc. with full sets at the club.

It'll be a good show regardless.

Hum

Rumor has it their on the fence about more reunion shows so it's doubtful; I think Seth should talk them off the fence and on to FreeFest.

I'd say "No."  What was the last Manics album that was even physically released in the United States?  I'm almost sure their last four or five haven't.  Was "This is My Truth...."?  That was 13 YEARS ago!

Now that I think of it, I'm not even sure if Pulp's last few have been physically released over here.  "We Love Life?"
I don't think the singles collection was.

The Manic's legendary Top 40 streak was just broken so....it's sort of like Ripken's streak, isn't it?  Why pay attention anymore?

FWIW, the 2 albums prior to their most recent were both released in the US and they toured here (albeit a short tour) in '09.

I've always read these boards to find out inside information, but this is my first post. I am a big Foo Fighters fan and couldn't help but noticing that they were playing in Pittsburgh on 9/23 a friday, and in buffalo on 9/25 a sunday, leaving a perfectly good Saturday at the end of September open, this has to mean Foo Fighters 9/24 at Free fest. I am wondering how everyone got their presale passcodes for last years freefest, because I could never find one last year, and was left out of freefest entirely because I couldn't get a ticket, I would like to sign up for whatever you have to sign up for to get it.

LOL at Pavement and LCD Soundsystem being big bands.  Foo Fighters play arenas.  Most people don't know who Pavement is and LCD played clubs.
Title: Re: FREEFEST 2011

LCD sold out Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl on their last tour... those places arent clubs.

and while Pavement may not be as "popular" as others, they've still gotten very high billing at the places they've played.

Not saying they're as big as the Foos, but they're not as small as put out to be.

If the Foo Fighters are booked for this year's FreeFest it will be like the first Freefest with the majority wanting to be at the mainstage all day. At last year's one could easily move between stages and at least get in the pavilion or pit, unlike the first year.

And if the Foo's do headline, lets hope that Seth books a second stage headliner that actually writes good songs and not just riff-o-matic music with LOL lyrics.  "Give me some rope I'm coming loose, I'm hanging on you"

Yeah on their farewell tour.  Would they have been playing MSG had it not been their last show ever?  Of course not, they would have been in a club.

Didn't they just play 930 like 3 or 4 years ago? After playing the Patriot Center? This is Dave's home, I don'
t think him and the Foos would pass up headlining a festival in their hometown area....

i meant to post a similar thought.  dave played the club's 30th anniversary party, a gig that is certainly below his average.  he and seth are friends.  i could totally see dave doing seth a favor and playing his festival.

indeed, one thing that has been nice has been the fact that there haven't been any mega-headliners in a while, with the exception of blink-182 but the second stage made up for that.  the foos would definitely change the dynamics.

last 3 times i've seen dave/the foos:
- foo fighters acoustic, 4th row
- launch party for "echoes...", irving plaza NYC, from about 15 feet away
- 930 club's anniversary party, from about 20 feet away

i don't think i can see them from the lawn of a shed...

foos are too big for the organizers...its not that they would not play...we all know dave will play garages for pete's sake! and fyi the garage for dc area was in md...

but if you had the foos at a FREE festival with two stages and multiple acts it would create a big headache from a logistical standpoint....and it would turn into a foo fighers show overshadowing everything else....just dont see it

btw pavement- much as i like them- played to a half empty pit and 80% empty pavillion

the closest to a ff level act was weezer not blink 182...

I guess you can take it that way, I think Blink-182, unfortunately, were bigger in their hay day than the Foos are right now. So their big "come back" was semi-big. I heard more people talking about "BLINK 182 AT FREEFEST" than anything else. I didn't really care, I was gonna see Ludacris and MIA on the 2nd stage hahahaha

If it REALLY turned into "OMFG FREE FOO FIGHTERS" would it really be any worse than last year? I didnt hear Blink 182 and I was fine with that. Not that I didnt want to or it would have ruined my day, I just think IF the Foo Fighers played it wouldn't ruin the atmosphere.

Do you think people's experiences were ruined at Coachella when Madonna played? Cmon.

Madonna played the dance tent at Chella. She was like a last minute addition though I think. Kind of like when Jimmy Buffet played the small stage at noon during Bonnaroo two years ago. She was also billed below Massive Attack that day.

It wasn't obvious which was the main stage and which was the small stage but I'd say Foos were on the main stage in '08. Or at least the main attraction that day. They had like 5x the crowd Jack Johnson had. Also they are billed 2nd at Lolla this year (ahead of Coldplay and Muse) and 1st at Sasquatch. That's a pretty big deal.

last year we got Temper Trap, Ludacris, Matt & Kim, and Edward Sharpe alongside Pavement and LCD Soundsystem....what's the difference?

can you imagine if the line up was

kottonmouth kings
stone temple pilots
wilco

jimmy eat world
korn
hollywood undead

i'm probably one of the few who thinks this and is willing to admit it, but that isn't a terrible festival lineup.  i'd be interested in DM, offspring, cranberries, STP, wilco, FM and JEW.  i'd probably check out 10 minutes of korn and/or chickenfoot, if scheduling allowed, out of morbid curiosity.  that leaves 3 bands out of 12 that i have no interest in.  any festival with a 75% hit rate is ok with me.

Freefest wouldn't have to be anywhere near that high for me.  Last year I went to see Pavement and LCD. Anything else was a bonus.

There's a show the very next night. Not ruling out that weekend, but it will be quite the cleanup effort if it happens.

It's an Incubus show the next night. No need to clean up for people with bad music taste.

There's already either a Saturday or Sunday show for every weekend in September, except Labor Day weekend.

It just seems too coincidental that TVOTR has Philly on 9/9, Charlotte in 9/12, and nothing listed yet for the two weekend days between those Fri and Mon dates.

So September 10 with TV on the Radio and who else?

There's a show the very next night. Not ruling out that weekend, but it will be quite the cleanup effort if it happens.

If it is 9/10, Death From Above 1979 don't have anything on their schedule, and seem to be at more festivals this year than they are not.  I'd much rather see them in a club than at a festival, but it would great if there were any local date.

Guided by voices is in Raleigh the night before.  It would be great if they were on the bill.

Lineup and date to be announced July 11th

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/midnight_sun/blog/2011/07/virgin_mobile_freefest_lineup_1.html

and the foo fighters have stated that they will announce additional dates for their north american tour on monday, july 11 (delayed announcement - they were going to publish dates this week, but now need to hold off).

coincidence?  they do not have a show scheduled on 9/10.

sign up for FB using an old e-mail address (or open a new one at yahoo.com or hotmail), give minimal info, and then use your new account for getting tickets.  you don't have to use FB for anything else.  think of it as one of those presale sites - you'll create an account on those, right?  they ask you for more info than FB (like mailing address).

i know, i know, you're edgy, not one of the sheeple, one of the last free thinkers, etc.  don't worry, we won't tell anyone.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/midnight-sun-blog/bs-ae-virgin-mobile-freefest-lineup,0,7157168.story

"Hurwitz said that when the festival was a ticketed event at Pimlico Race Track, the process for booking talent was geared towards who would sell the most tickets. In 2007, the headliners were The Police, Beastie Boys, and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Now, ?We have the luxury that the only criteria we have is who are the most exciting artists out there,? Hurwitz said.

FreeFest tends to book more eclectically than other festivals for several other reasons. Speer notes that in recent years, organizers have been to draw younger crowds than those who might attend, say, a show by the Police.

This is Virgin Mobile's doing, which counts courting a young demographic as one of its goals for the event. ?[The festival] became less about booking the important bands than booking those that would resonate with the customer we really wanted to attract,? Faris said.

These edgier artists are also in keeping with Virgin Mobile's company ethos: hip, independent, innovative.
Because the festival is underwritten largely through sponsorships with several companies - Kyocera is one of the most prominent this year - the line-up also has to fit a budget."

(...though I don't think Empire of the Sun and Ghostland Observatory are edgy AT ALL)  ;D

Let me add my thanks to Seth for another great line up.  Also like how they explained it in that Sun article.  Especially for those of us with not a lot of disposable income, having a smaller festival in this area that is free and brings together a lot of "lesser known", but potentially more interesting acts (depending on taste) is amazing and very much appreciated.

they put out a call on their facebook page - you had to fax them back a document saying they could use your video  - the first 18 would be accepted and you would find out one band (now i understand why it was 'hey, find out 1 band by giving us a video' heh

Seeing as Cee-Lo Green, Deadmau5 and The Black Keys represent the  "hottest industry entertainment",  I guess those people in the VIP rooms will have to be content with whatever talent was strong armed in exclusive LiveNation tours

these acts would never play the Filmore... The Black Keys for example played DAR... They would not play a 1200 capacity club at this point in their career.

I can't stand Live Nation but to spin this as some Seth coup over the still as yet to open Filmore is reaching...

The detractors, naysayers and negative comments just kill me. IT'S FREE!!! If you're not interested, then don't go and don't complain. Do any of you bashers have any idea what it takes to put on a concert of this magnitude, with the caliber of artist that the festival attracts... and make it free? Here's a hint, no one else does it. It's an impossible task to please everyone and for those not interested in attending it sure would be nice to live by the old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Of course that's just wishful thinking.

Well I guess i have a right to complain.  Because to see a decent music festival I have to travel hundred of miles.  This festival used to be pretty decent.  Even last year you had pavement on a reunion tour that was selling out every where and lcd soundsystem on the farewell tour.  Plus a bunch of acts that actually had appeale to me.

This year a DJ is listed second on the line-up.  And how many times have I had to see TV on the Radio at festivals before (including this one).  And they have one decent song.  Black keys are awful and the opposite of cutting edge.   Ghostland I have seen at lollapalooza twice.  First time in front of 20 people.  They were fun with that few people but really not a band I would want to see again.  Patti Smith is terrible live and have skipped her before at a festival to see someone else.

And it is not really free.  I spend about 100 dollars every year.  Can you bring your own food in?  How about beer?  This isn't wolf trap.  I am free to complain about the only area festival going downhill.

Sure Okkervil River and Alberta Cross I would like to see but it isn't really worth it for me to drive an hour to the festival and pay 9 bucks for a beer.  I will be seeing the National and Wye Oak earlier that week.  I love both of them.  Maybe if they had charged money they could have gotten bands like the National and Fleet Foxes on the line-up and made it festival worthy.

So yeah complaining about something that has been allowed to go downhill is my right.   If this were the first year of the festival it would be differant.

The A.M. era Wilco I saw put on a nice little rag tag alt-country show.

The contemporary Wilco puts on a jawdropping 2.5 hour rock show. And has Nels Cline on guitar.

Both had their appeal, but if you had actually seen both, you'd know that the contemporary show is better.

Um, yeah. They're going to have a 60 year old woman who is 30 years past her heyday as the headliner of a festival geared toward a younger crowd. Not.

Patti Smith is the less fun plug in for the Joan Jett slot from last year.

Patti Smith's name is listed first and is the only in bold in the pollstar listing. She is the "headliner"...

having said that I agree with everything you wrote..

First, stop kissing so much ass.  It's unbecoming.

Second, the whiners WILL be there, because even the biggest bitchers on this forum STILL SEEM TO GO TO FREEFEST.  That's probably the most annoying part about it.

Look, this line-up didn't bowl me over, so you know what I might do?  Not go.  Seems pretty simple to me, but whatever.

For all of the good that the internet has brought to the world, the worst is giving trolls the impression that people give a shit about their input on things.

He talked about how the boards are and how people would complain.

Ditto, I think it's great that it's not all the same bands that are at every other festival this year, and is a chance to see the acts free.  Hope lots of folks get tix!

Too bad about the facebook requirement - not that an account is difficult to get, but it eliminates those of us who work for a living, will be at work on Friday, and whose employer blocks access to social media sites like facebook.  Guess I'm s.o.l.

Yup.  My thoughts, exactly.

It's a good line-up.  Have never seen Black Keys, TVOTR  or Patti Smith.

the fact that its free is irrelevant ..lots of live music- most actually- is free..the kennedy center has a free concert every night.

Since everyone else is bitching, Black Keys aren't a band that should be playing an ampitheatre.*

*I'll still be there and enjoy the hell out of it, slugging back 24oz Coronas.

P.S. Many of you still owe me a drink from last year.  ???

Has anyone tried to figure out the stages?  This is the best I could come up with...
Pavilion:

Black Keys
TVOTR
Patti Smith
Okkervil River
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
Bombay Bicycle Club
Alberta Cross

Other stage:

Deadmau5
Cee Lo Green
Cut Copy
Empire of the Sun
Two Door Cinema Club
Big Sean

Forest:

!!!
Calvin Harris
Ghostland Observatory
James Murphy
Teddybears
Porter Robinson
Eclectic Method

read what i posted! the vip tickets are the fan e pak ticket (49.50) i think..this year does not seem to guarantee pavillion access unless i am missing something...

there is nothing in the fan e-pak that says or implies "VIP":  no guaranteed pavilion, no exclusive amenities, no dedicated entrance, no backstage tours, no meet'n'greet, etc.  early entrance and a t-shirt doesn't amount to VIP.  hence my question.

in other news: a ton of shows go on sale tomorrow at 10, including some biggies like Wilco, plus Freefest.  fingers crossed that TF doesn't crash.

I'm a little confused as to how the presale works. I know you're supposed to go to the facebook page and "Like" the VirginMobileLive page in order to be able to access tickets when they go on sale. However, everything I am reading on that page refers to the public ticket sale starting tomorrow. Will there be something on the facebook page reflecting presale information, or is there another place we're supposed to go for the presale tickets? I already have a password, I'm just wondering how to access tickets when 10 am rolls around today. Thanks!

yes, the FB page will be updated with a presale link.  follow the same instructions as posted there for the public onsale.

they aren't mentioning it on the FB page because they're trying (relatively unsuccessfully) to keep it secret.  if they posted on their wall "presale on thursday, public onsale on friday", then 100% of the people would be out there looking for the password.  as is, only 90% of people know about it  ::)

if i didn't know better i'd say today's virgin freefest presale is for the fan e pak tickets only...

i'd be willing to bet you don't know better ;D

if cookie problems: use IE

if "There are no tickets available that meet your request. Please select a different quantity or choose another price range." = man up and choose the $10 donation option ;D

if "offer is restricted": shut down browser, re-start, and use link on Wall (or earlier in this thread)

GO

Observation:

FreeFest brings out an annoying tendency in people.  Any time someone wants to be a little crabby or whatever that they didn't get tickets or the site froze up, etc., someone pops in all, "Come on, man, it's -free-.  You can't get angry over something that's -free-.  First come, first served, man."

I know last year I knew like 15 people who got pairs of tickets and we had a couple left over that we ended up giving away, so fingers crossed.

They aren't case sensitive and you don't need to add in the punctuation.  Also sometimes you dont even need the second word or at least all of it.  I got one where the second word was upside down, typed in only the first one and it worked.

[edit] I also think you can get it to say the words in audio, but I'm not positive.  You can also keep refreshing to find one you can see for sure. [/edit]

yeah i understand that however my vision is already very fuzzy and the blur makes it so a lot of times I cannot tell what letters are there.  It can be especially bad with lower case a/e/o and t/f/l.

Title: Re: FREEFEST 2011
Post by: sweetcell on July 14, 2011, 10:55:29 am
dude, it will be way harder tomorrow...

maybe, maybe not.  some demand was fulfilled today, and it's not like the presale was any secret.  as long as more people got tickets today than the number of new folks trying tomorrow, you could be better off.

Fuckers.  ;)

the fact that they're free doesn't change anything.  remember the phish fiasco?  people bitched to high heaven about that, and it wasn't free.  people will complain regardless of price.  no, the main issue is one of perceived "fairness".  if folks get shut out, they want to know that everyone was shut out for the same reason - demand > supply and not random backend coding quirks that arbitrarily affect one browser and not another.

the one annoying thing that people say which does hold some water is "there was no guaranteeing you were going to get a ticket anyways".  again, demand > supply.  many are going to leave unhappy (free ticket or not).

I DEMAND SATISFACTION

Anyone remember how quick the general sale sold out last year? It was quick but I don't recall how quick.

Last year, the system displayed a message at 10:15 or 10:20 that the tickets were all gone.  I tried again about 10 minutes later and got the same message.  I read the following week that a lot of tickets were given away after 11:00, once certain technical issues had been resolved.

So last year, starting at 10, it went on for something in excess of one hour.  A lot of people gave up after being told that the tickets were all gone.

The moral of the story is to never trust anything ticketfly tells you.

My recollection is that there are usually plenty of tix available for this right @ the day of show.  Many people order the freetix and then don't claim them, and that is the case even when the freefest had much bigger headliners in the last 2 years at mpp. so, anyway, back to everyone freaking out.

Hey Guys-

It looks like people in this thread had Chrome/ IE issues with cookies as well. Cookie acceptance is something that a buyer could run into on any browser, on any e-commerce website.

right - but we don't.  when was the last time amazon.com, or ticketmaster.com, or paypal.com, or sextoysandducttape.com, or any of the other sites you aspire to become, gave you a hiccup?  if it was just one or two people having issues, fine.  but hopefully you've gained an appreciation of the widespread nature of the problems with the website.

i appreciate the social media, the bundled marketing, the quick responsiveness, etc.  but TF is first and foremost a ticket selling company.  all the tweets in the world won't make up for a system that won't sell me a ticket.  the issues TF is having aren't insurmountable - thousands of e-commerce websites process millions of transactions a day without the percentage of fall-out TF is experiencing.  TF.com should not be having cookie problems, certainly not at the rate you're having them.  IMO, time to focus resources on fixing the basics of your business.  you shouldn't have to be writing a "ccokies management cheat-sheet".  your techies should be fixing this.

fyi i work for a large IT consulting company.  i've designed, built and tested several e-comm sites.  we're not cheap but we're good.  lemme know if you wanna bring us in... i've got a sales quota to make ;)

But your own support staff has stated that your site does not work with Ff.

well, to be precise, they said that the site works better with IE, and if other browsers are giving me headaches that i should use IE instead.

I have to say Ticketfly you guys suck.. I know TFAMY will chirp in with some chirpy comment any minute but why the heck not have it work with Moxilla?

and thank goodness for Amy's chipper attitude.  can you imagine if she came in here, in the same mood we all project?  let's face it, people can act like spoiled brats in here.  if i were in amy's shoes i'd sure be tempted to tell off the lot of ya  :-*

Just checked a few minutes ago for the heck of it using the link posted on FB and pulled 2 free tickets.  Looks like I don't have to try in the general sale after all.  I'd give it a shot if you were shut out earlier.

uhh... by going to the FB page, following the like, entering a password, and requesting tickets?

the probably released a bunch just recently - declined credit cards (for $10 donation tix) and cancelled free tix due to going over the limit.

Hutch- I am glad to hear I have been spared.

Sweet Cell- I sent you an email via the support address you wrote to. I'm getting to the bottom of the Firefox issue. We, at Ticketfly, do not recommend that everyone use Internet Explorer. I will clarify that once and for all.

Everyone else- Virgin posted some info for getting tickets tomorrow. Over on their Facebook page.

Sometimes things just don't work on computers when we need them to?
Yeah, every time I try to get a ticket in a heavy sale via TF.
I agree with others; while I appreciate TFAmy being polite in responses (and I hope others are in return) the response is somewhat patronizing b/c it doesn't fix a thing when the issues are consistent and for multiple users.
Sweetcell is right - we will always have complaints. Yet - some of the comments from buyers seem to contain valid issues, suggestions and even: solutions. I also appreciate TF testing things, but I wasn't the only one with issues, nor for the first time.
So if we are doing something wrong - please tell us before the sale not at 10:30, 11, etc.?

If it were 2001 and I was using dial up, maybe -- but the response just doesn't fly, Amy. No pun! (sorry if I sound snarky...I'm not really mad. Just...the comment just seemed a bit...? It carried no responsibility when it clearly was not an isolated case.)
It's all good - I won't be going. (or trying for tickets tomorrow and no I'm not pouting.) Just letting go of it since this occurs show after show, year after year. Thanks for bringing the show tho, 930/MPP/Seth, bands and Virgin people. Have fun, everyone!

I got a question for you - why is it that when I follow your link, it pulls up the page and says "OH DEAR!  There was a error while trying to load the page."

It looks like some folks have gotten tix in the past hour or so.

Tomorrow's gonna be like last year's fiasco all over again.

there was a limit of 2 per address, name etc so I am sure nobody could get more than 2 unless they have slightly different names on different cards with different addresses.. that sort of thing..

I got 1 in the presale yesterday late afternoon (a $10) and one free one today and I have to assume that is OK.

Shit sells out quick, that's life I guess. But Amy, one critique for Ticketfly, would be to get better error messages. It is hard to know if you're not getting tickets due to some browser/cookie error or because the tickets are sold out. Clear messaging would shift people's frustrations from "Ticketfly sucks, they can't handle the load" to "damn, this sold out quickly."

The "This offer is currently restricted. Please make a different selection." language is vague and tells you absolutely nothing helpful..

Blizzard software has the best ticket queue system I have seen.  They use it for the yearly festival - as soon as you go to buy tickets, it puts you in a queue - you don't have to refresh the page or anything. you can watch your place in line count down.

don't blame TF, blame Virgin for insisting on FB.  if they had let people buy directly, without all the FB crap, that wouldn't have been a problem.  luckily it wasn't too widespread of a problem.  maybe FB is punishing those who are trying to maintain their security and privacy :P

I have virgin mobile service and kyocera phone.  I am thinking of throwing the phone in the trash and getting a real mobile phone provider after this debacle.  I call the Kycoera a "dumb phone".

Anyway I still say charge 10 dollars a ticket.  That way it keep people away who just want something free and maybe the 300,000 to 400,000 they raise could be used to increase the quality of the line-up.

Of course it is.  Facebook, with their wacky "https" protocol.

I have no idea if I got tix or not.  The instruction link provided by TFlyAmy did not work last night or this morning and she never addressed it, as far as I know.  From what I read here, one just has to go to the page and press "Like".  If so, I might have tix.  If not, no.

It's a shame that clear, coherent instructions were unavailable, especially  with someone from the middleman monitoring the board.  But that's the way of ticketfly, apparently.

This whole process could be so much easier for all concerned if there were a simple lottery - let people apply over a three-day period, say, and select 20K entries or whatever the number is.  Do the pre-sale the same way a week before.  It avoids the short, sudden, apparently overwhelming load on communications lines and on servers, and whatever the result, everyone knows they had a fair shot and nobody would have any (rational) reason to complain.  I guess the folks at ticketfly are gluttons for much-deserved punishment.

Is Ticketfly a ticketing agency or a front for Nigerian hackers?

 ;D
Maybe TFlyAmy can answer that later, but I think it's supper time in Lagos right about now.

I'm guessing there werent any tix to re-release this morning. Been going at this om/off for 75 minutes and nobody has popped om to say they just scored a pair.

Will just wait at this point.

For anyone that got tickets (or not) and is having problems logging in to their Ticketfly accounts, use this link: http://bit.ly/TFlyAccount

I was unable to log in to my account via the main ticketfly page, but this link worked just fine.

The instructions were posted, multiple times, on both the Virgin fb page and by posters in this very thread.  If you couldn't figure out how to do it when thousands upon thousands could, then that's on you.  While TFly has had issues, it was ultimately up to Virgin Mobile on how the whole process was conducted, so if you have issues with that, take it up with them.

If I had lots of time, I could wade through 30 pages of comments and find ones that said that you just follow the link, "Like" it, and you are done.  That is, in fact, what was being said.  When the ticketfly rep posts a link to instructions and that link does not work, that is inconvenient.  Not all of us have spent the week obsessing about this, and timely instructions are not too much to think would be available.

Not that I'm really upset, but nothing in the instructions said anything about disabling https from your FB security settings. If you had that selected, you got a error when the Ticketfly page loaded.

This is a very interesting theory...Leave it to the boardies to be so smart!

We'll look into it. Unfortunately it's a Facebook issue.

Okay, it turned out that FB users who had the secure browsing box checked in their settings could not get through. I unchecked it and got through immediately, but to no avail anyway.

Why didn't TF check for this?

I was able to get thought after deselecting https from my settings. To bad it was too late.
UGH!!! So sick of everything being dependent or through FB. And if it is seriously test the f out of it. Just sell tickets the normal way. Post a link on 930 club ticket / concert page / TF and FB if you must and be done with it. All people still wouldn't get tickets through a regular link but geez, at least they wouldn't be mucking around trying to figure out how to even get the page to work.

I agree with you but look at it from Virgin's perspective... this way they really made sure people knew it was Virgin Mobile.. also they targeted a younger demographic.

I've seen it in other companies lately: targeting the Facebook/Twitter/social networking is all the rage at board meetings... sort of the flavor of the month.. so I could see why Virgin would push for that..

I just think if you're going to do the FB thing you have to make sure people don't feel like they got F'ed and i think here- based on the comments on FB- a lot of people feel like thats what happened ..its one thing to get the screen saying "sold out".. another to get something about cookies or some other vague concept of computer trouble...but maybe i'm wrong maybe people feel like they got f'ed regardless if they didn't get tickets in which case a lot of people were going to feel that way either way..

So if it's "an lol cat" does that mean we're supposed to read it out loud as "an L-O-L cat" because I believe it should be read as "a lawl cat" meaning you don't use "an".

In fact, I think we should just stop resisting modern progress and start saying "lawl" when we find something comical or humorous. Even an iron robot housecleaner that wears a french maid outfit would says "LAWL" when hearing a witty anecdote concerning an Xp-13 fixed-sync rotating uplink.

When did they announce the time slots for this thing last year??

very, very late in the game - week of.  this is one thing that i'd like freefest to work on: getting the schedule/time slots out at least a week in advance.  festoon it with warnings of "draft", "subject to change", "to be updated", etc, but let's get some lines drawn in the sand.  personally it helps me deal with anxiety and excitement, plan my day (ex: meetup time), etc.

the line-up is 95-100% set, which stage and which order are probably worked out too - why wait until three days before the show to publish it??  i'd rather have a schedule that's 85% correct a week beforehand than one that is 100% right just before the show.

So how does the will call work with freefest? I was just going to get me tickets the day of but then I noticed this at the bottom of my confirmation email:

"Available for pickup starting 9/2. No charge. General admission tickets not picked up by close of business on 9/8 will be released to the general public on 9/9"

So I have the week before the fest to get them or else they toss mine? Or am I misreading this?

meetup: we'll organize one once the schedule is published. we need to pick a time that works for most people, a.k.a. a lull in the schedule that will maximize how many people can make it.  location will be the 932, of course ;D

So I have the week before the fest to get them or else they toss mine? Or am I misreading this?

that's exactly right.  if you selected will-call as your delivery, you need to pick up the tickets at the club or at MPP by the thursday before the festival.  otherwise, you lose 'em.

as announced in the weekly blast, MPP has partnered with Rock & Bus (http://merriweatherpostpavilion.rockandbus.com/) to provide transpo to the venue.  great idea, i think to myself, since i might need a ride home after freefest.  so i go to the site, they have all sorts of other shows listed... but no freefest.  biggest event of the year at MPP and no buses?

turns out that the buses are listed on their sister site Muzikbus (http://virginmobile.muzikbus.com/), which is supposedly for electronic music events.  uh, i guess freefest has a dance tent... yeah, that makes sense.

anyhoo, return fare is $50 from DC, MD and NoVA ($65 from richmond - who does their pricing?!?).  not cheap, but beats a cab.

If the neighborhood in which the club lies gives Walkies the willies, do you really think he would go within 20 miles of Philly?

Well, shit. I was literally just about to PM you and ask  about a possible ride since you lived near me last I checked. Maybe it's time for a ride thread.

'zag, my situation is still being worked out.  i can definitely give you a ride there, question is whether or not i'll have the car to give you a ride back: the missus may need to duck out before the end of the show, i'll mostly likely want to stay until the end... need to figure out how to make that happen (or if we even need to make it happen).  i'll let you know what we settle on.

HELLO IMP? WTF?

agreed that it's silly expensive, but take it up with the bus service.  IMP doesn't set prices for other companies.

(and comparing an event-specific, irregular service to a high-volume scheduled service isn't a fair comparison.  you can fly to los angeles for less than it would cost you to fly to asheville, even though it's 10 times the distance)

i thought IMP was endorsing this bus service.. if they're not then thats fine.. but if they're throwing in their lot with these ripoff guys then that would s u c k.

there's no way it should cost practically the same as a cab to take a bus. sorry.

When are the set times coming out?

traditionally they come out just a few days before the festival, like wednesday or thursday.

Freefest's inability to publish set times more than 72 hours before the show is the only black spot on what is otherwise an amazing feat of organization, IMO.  maybe this year will be different?

as announced in the weekly blast, MPP has partnered with Rock & Bus (http://merriweatherpostpavilion.rockandbus.com/) to provide transpo to the venue.  great idea, i think to myself, since i might need a ride home after freefest.  so i go to the site, they have all sorts of other shows listed... but no freefest.  biggest event of the year at MPP and no buses?

turns out that the buses are listed on their sister site Muzikbus (http://virginmobile.muzikbus.com/), which is supposedly for electronic music events.  uh, i guess freefest has a dance tent... yeah, that makes sense.

anyhoo, return fare is $50 from DC, MD and NoVA ($65 from richmond - who does their pricing?!?).  not cheap, but beats a cab.

another transpo option, brought to you by BYT: http://byt930virginbus.eventbrite.com/ (haters might want to check it out if only for the name of the bus ;D)

they have options that include tickets if you don't have one yet.  bus-only option is same as muzikbus, ~$50.  only one departure point: the 930.

RIDE REQUEST: can anyone give me a ride after freefest?

i live in rockville, but anything around bethesda or silver spring would be great.  folks going back to Virginia via 495 could drop me off anywhere around there.  i'm happy to chip in for gas, buy you a beer at the show, etc.

please PM me if you've got a spot in your car/truck/hippiemobile. thanks!

Just got home from Freefest. First I just want to say thank you Seth for putting together another great year of FreeFest! I don't think there is a similar event anywhere in the country.

Some brief thoughts:

Traffic was really bad and so was parking. It was probably my fault for not getting there till 230 but I had to park at Howard Community College which was literally a mile walk to Merriweather. They did have shuttle buses though, but my friend and I figured since traffic was bad walking would make more sense.

It was much more crowded this year than last year. I think this was because the lineup was stronger this year so more people actually showed up. Food and bathroom lines were pretty long but doable.

I stayed at the main stage so I only saw Grace Potter, Pattie Smith, and TVOTR. Grace Potter was pretty meh. She wad decent, but way too much shrieking for my taste.

Pattie Smith was really good but made some comments that seemed to piss a lot of people off. I saw one guy flip her off and then storm out of the pavilion. The comments didn't bother me but it always puts the audience in an awkward spot. I loved how she closed on Pissing in a River, People have the power, Because the night and then Horses/ Gloria. Her set ended on such a high note.

TVOTR was also really good and the crowd seemed pretty into it.

I wish I could have caught some of the other stage acts but I didn't want to lose my really good pavilion seat.

On a side note, during TVOTR some guy in the row behind me decided it would be appropriate to pee while sitting in his seat which freaked this poor girl sitting by my friend and I. Fortunately, The Merriweather staff was very quick to throw him out once it was brought to their attention.

Food vendors were a disaster.  They need some serious assistance.  I waited about an hour in a line and when I got to the front, they didn't even have anything.  They couldn't even sell beer because the CO2 was out around 7pm.  Both times I went to get food, none was available.  When I suggested that they put up a sign to tell people they were out of things, I was told that they didn't have any sharpies. Yes, blame Sharpie.  Awesome.  It also looked like lots of under age people were being served alcohol early in the day.  No one was checking ID.  Cee Lo was fun.  I feel like I spent the day waiting in line for nothing.

Deadmau5 is big and so are the Black Keys. I don't think either of them made the lineup "stronger".

Despite my old coot self I still managed to have an enjoyable time.  While not every band made me want to scream and shout, I absolutely enjoy the format of this festival.   Being able to easily move been stages and have shade will always make the difference than a festival in a wide open field.  I did notice the sound on the lawn was vastly improved and thought the new location of the Dance stage lead to less sound bleeding on to the lawn.    The early entry perk was interesting as it was cool to be able to wander the grounds without the hordes present.

Highlights were Patti Smith, James Murphy, The Teddybears and the bits of Okkervil River and TVOTR I caught.  Not quite sure what's up with Cee-Lo in a live setting, but getting a bunch of hot women to back you up only really works if they have talent as well.  Plus, the song or two I caught had a clear memorex feel to them.

It would appear some of Patti Smith's comments have set conservatives off on twitter, but her comments on  where  our personal freedoms were on 9/10 were spot on.  That  comment about how Lenny Kaye would never cut of anyone was priceless....

Cliche of the festival had to be the BYT express line at the Red Bull and Vodka tent near the dance stage, and their little private corral was just adorable.

I was not there.. I'm moving everything around my basement to tear up the carpeting/foam/floors due to the flooding we got... sucks royale with cheese. i am pissed.

but if there were more people it must have been because more tickets were given out...i think from the schedule it seems they had two "main" stages...

I can't see how this years lineup could be considered bigger than the past two years..

Soooo, did they sell beer right until 11 pm? Because I saw people buying beer at 10:45 and couldn't believe they were still selling beer.

^The only 930 staffer I ran into all day!

I spent all the morning/early afternoon in the Skatepark of Baltimore booth so the first band I caught was Okkervil River. According to Twitter, everything before was unremarkable, anyway.
Patti Smith was the clear highlight and her speech was what needed to be said. TVOTR were better than they were at the club in 2009 but nowhere near as great as their Cookie Mountain tour shows. Cut Copy were a good way to kill time before Patti Smith. Grace Potter has an undeniable voice but the music that comes with it is super bland. Calvin Harris was spinning the most generic dance tracks imaginable. Black Keys were pretty good. First time catching them. Okkervil River were more enjoyable than expected. Venue was way more swarmed than I imagined it would be. Great time all in all. Thanks to IMP for a good full day of music and to Kosmo for the ride up.

I might be in the minority here, but I thought GP and the Nocturnals put on a near mindblowingly awesome set.  Then again I'm a classic/roots rock fan.

Bombay Bicycle Club were enjoyable, but nothing terribly special.  Okkervil River were a pleasant surprise, and !!! were decent.  Left after that to go to a party for a friend being deployed, but overall another good V-fest experience.  Thanks to Seth and all the staph that worked hard to make it that way!

Saw thatguy in the pavilion, being his usual gregarious self.  Also was amused by all the people trying to get to the pit who walked down the right side of the center section of the seats, only to be told that they had to walk all the way back up and around down the far right side of the pavilion to get there.  Signage would've helped there.

First of all what is up with all those wasps and/or bees.

I got there in time for Alberta Cross and enjoyed their set. During Okkervil River I did lurk in the 9:32 and had some nice bourbon. I think I saw a forum meeting but I have no idea what any of you look like.

That whole chunk of acts on the Pavilion stage was great! Grace Potter was a nice surprise. Patti Smith ruled! TV on The Radio were the most rocking I have ever seen them and despite being late The Black Keys were killer. Deadmau5 was fairly boring but he had more fans there than any other act. Ghostland was pretty neat too but I had to jet before traffic got snarled. Was out in less than 10 minutes.

This was my first Freefest and I had a blast. I hope it is this good next year.
Title: Re: FREEFEST 2011

murphy's dj set kicked ass.  really enjoyed empire of the sun, but they weren't mind-melting.  i was suitably impressed by the black keys.  deadmau5 was... deadmau5.  he's good at what he does, but what he does does little for me.  very pretty light, tho.  i caught Ghostland's first 2 songs and i (and several hundred/thousand others) had a really good time.

highlight of the day for me: a smoked turkey leg.  DAMN that thing ruled.

EotS was probably the band i most looked forward to, but otherwise i didn't feel there was anybody that i really needed to see - and i loved that.  bouncing around from stage to stage all day was awesome.  merriweather is such a great place for a festival.

nice seeing the usual suspects at the 932 meetup, and thank you to mr. whippy for a ride home (equally huge thanks to co-passenger mr. K who had water bottles for us to drink on the ride home - such a godsend).  can't wait for next year's edition!

50,000 according to this (40,000 last year):

http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/midnight-sun-blog/bal-virgin-mobile-freefest-draws-its-largest-audience-20110910,0,4701462.story

definitely felt more crowded this year and the lines were a lot longer.  i think the venue was a little over capacity, gonna need more facilities (of all types) to maintain that number of attendees.
Title: Re: FREEFEST 2011
Post by: kosmo vinyl on September 12, 2011, 07:40:27 am
I think the mud caused the relocation of a lot of the temporary facilities, moving the dance stage alone change the location of the information tents.   Also think there were more portapotties by the second stage that weren't around the outer edge due to mud.

What was interesting is what good shape the lawn at the pavilion was in...

Had a blast!
James Murphy was the highlight of the show. Playing vinyl. :)
Was there from the beginning till the end.
That makes sense why there were not more portapotties..............cause of mud.  I couldn't
be on the west stage for long. the lines were crazy and the sun was killing me.
haha
we did get to ride on the ferris wheel before the line got outta control.

bombay has a killer song called lights out, words gone. that i had to download.

empire of the sun was neat!!

glad i saw cut copy at a smaller venue earlier this year.  :)  Toooooo many people and bahbah bees.

and as much as i love black keys/deadmau5 i was having fun dancing to ghostland. haha

Was great to meet/see some of you all again.

I think I lasted 2 minutes (that might be generous) for Grace Potter. If I never had to hear her again, Id be most thankful.

Other than that: I thought Id have been more imrpessed with Empire of the Sun and aside for the costumes it was a bit of a let-down. Didnt help that the crowd was pretty awful at that time.

!!! prob had one of the best crowds. Everyone was dancing and mostly quite into it. It was the one band that I was really looking forward to seeing (even tho I had seen them the night prior).

Other favorites were Two Door Cinema Club. I was surprised how young the crowd was in the front and everyone knew all their songs. I guess I didnt realize how popular they had become. There were less bees on the West Stage the closer to you were to the front.

I tried to avoid that stage like the plague as there were way too many bees. Spent some time in the pavilion to watch a fight break out and a guy go flying over the chair. No clue what happened, but I guess they kissed/made up.

Other bands were ok. Nothing exciting to report. Cut Copy for about 3 songs were better than I had remembered, but I was more interested in !!!. A little bummed I missed Patti Smith; seems I always miss her at festivals. Was really disappointed with Bombay Bicycle Club who I had really wanted to see. Good news - I wont be wasting money to see them with TDCC in NYC.

Thanks for a great time.

I agree with you on Grace Potter, she has lots of ability, but I didn't like what she does with it.

That's funny that there is a Two Door Cinema Club/Bombay Bicycle Club double bill in NYC.  Hearing some of both from a distance, I said to my friend that it sounded like basically the same band.

We had a great time, my favorite by far was TV on the Radio, who just pummeled everything in their path.  I also really liked Patti Smith and Alberta Cross, whose new songs are great.  Okkervil River has really stepped up their game since last time I saw them a couple years ago.

I wasn't there, but I'm gonna guess that the bees were yellow jackets. This time of year they hoard protein and carbs, often from people food. Were they swarming over the trash cans? That would be typical.

I guess it just reinforces Spin's point, but TVOTR didn't play "Caffeinated Consciousness."

http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/midnight-sun-blog/bs-ae-virgin-fest-hits-misses-pg,0,1651123.photogallery

from the write-up on this first page:
"The free tickets, a feature since 2009, are what set FreeFest apart from virtually every other major music festival. Branson said the plan is to keep the festival free for some years going forward. "No promises, but every year we do what we can to keep it free," he said."

free is obviously awesome, but i think it would make more sense to charge a little something - like $20.  it would discourage people from hoarding tickets if they're unsure they want to go.  the tickets are worth at least $80-100, so $20 would still be a huge gift and a the best value in the entire summer festival circuit.
