Title: Virgin Freefest 2012

Jack White and who else? Guided By Voices?

so i'm seeing Sept 8 as the date... a lot.  but no one has a source.  everyone just seems to know/agree on 9/08.  is it some sort of "worse kept secret" situation here?

haven't seen about JW headlining.  can't say that White is a big draw for me,  but i'll be there regardless.  freefest is always one of my summer highlights.  they could switch to an all-polka format and i'd still be there.  i'd spend less time at the main stage, but i'd still be there ;D

I've missed free-fest every year because of weddings I could not get out of.  A month ago, my sister announced she's getting married the weekend of September 8-9th in Las Vegas.

I'd say that's concrete proof V-fest is that weekend... if there is one.

Let the planning begin.

I have to skip it if it's on the 8th.

Mission of Burma day!

Unless I could find someone willing to leave early enough to do both.

they played the first Virgin Fest, at Pimlico.  their last show in the area was at MPP - i wanna say 3 years ago?  would be a solid headliner, IMO.

Sounds like you might enjoy the Firefly music festival.  I am guessing no band playing that festival would be allowed to play free fest.

Flaming Lips at festivals take way too long to set up.  Saw them in a park in Chicago in 2003 and they played a full set then, but only played 5 songs at Coachella.  Maybe they're a little more timely now since it seems like they only play festivals and the occassional one off show now...

I saw them there too! Cubs Care Park next to the New City YMCA next to the still standing Cabrini Green near Division and Halsted! That was pretty sweet, that was the third time in one month I saw the Lips.

Not real keen on seeing them again, unless they play tons of Soft Bulletin.

Have they confirmed a date? Or did I make that up.... I knot they confirmed that there WILL be a Freefest. When did they announce last year?

I sincerely hope I don't have to go through fucking Facebook like last year. That was such a pain in the dick.

I am begining to think there won't be a virgin fest this year.  Last year the announcement with the line-up was made on July 13th.  The second wednesday in July.  It is the third wednesday in July and still no announcement.  Maybe the Firefly festival took all the bands that would have played.  But as it is a free fest and sponsors want their name out there why such a delay in any sort of announcement?

More guesses of the lineup.

If it's the 22nd, I can see The Killers, Jack White, and Miike Snow as possibilities. I'd love to see Nicole Atkins added, but I doubt she's doing any more non-local shows for this record. And maybe Beck. When's the last time he's played the DC area?

All right! We have a date and a venue.

Now let's start making educated guesses based on touring schedules around 10/6.

JACK WHITE: Possible. In NY on 9/30 and Texas on 10/13.
M83: Strongly possible. In NY on 10/3 and Charlotte on 10/7.
ALABAMA SHAKES: Possible. In Boston 10/5 and Louisville 10/8.
BEN FOLDS FIVE: Maybe? In Buffalo on 10/5 and Philly 10/7

My virgin mobile phone is made by LG.  Makes sense as last time I went I had Kucero Phone and it was presented by them. I believe Virgin Mobile is owned by Sprint in the US so it is not like Virgin would be sponsoring it.

Yes, their first two albums are near perfect. But live, they were always as boring as the Olympics.

Yes, their first two albums are near perfect. But live, they were always as boring as the Olympics.

Completely disagree. While Marty (even if he did beat his women, tsk tsk) and Jesse didn't write any songs, they always had great banter with James on stage. That's in addition to their great live stuff. In fact, their live stuff completely blows away their album versions. Especially When I Goose-Step, their finest moment. Which is another reason why I can't stand Mercer anymore: he refuses to play When I Goose-Step live.

Great banter? Are you serious? Marty was so seriously awkward with his banter that he was the one who deserved to be bitch slapped. James just seemed embarassed, like he just wanted the guy to shut up and play.

Does the drummer still have a Mexican food truck in Portland?

I saw them at Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle in September 2002 and at Bowery Ballroom in September 2003. Also saw Mercer solo as part of a Subpop showcase at Iota in Arlington, sometime I think in 2003. Was never inspired to see them after that.

checked out the names i didn't know....most of those appear to be DJ's or some shit....seems like the dance forest is really going to blow this year - just boring dj types, no interesting bands (like holy fuck for example)

edit: General Admission On Free Friday, August 24 at 12PM EDT on Ticketfly.com

I like it.  Jack White and Nas were enough to get me excited about this, the rest is just icing.  Hum must've been busy; maybe next year.

Now to figure out how to get tickets.  Anyone know if it's safe to say there will be some pre-sales(frees) like in years past?  I remember seeing them, but never bothered trying as I wasn't able to go regardless, so I'm not sure well they worked for boardies anyway.

checked out the names i didn't know....most of those appear to be DJ's or some shit....seems like the dance forest is really going to blow this year - just boring dj types, no interesting bands (like holy fuck for example)

edit: General Admission On Free Friday, August 24 at 12PM EDT on Ticketfly.com

also other than the no name dj types, pretty strong lineup i'd say

I would rather them have no name dj's and save the money for better live acts.

Skrillex is probably free, considering he doesn't do anything on stage.

Otherwise, nice line up!

Just really REALLY hoping it's not through Facebook like last year. It says follow them on Twitter for the pre-sale information, I hope it's through their website or something, I wasn't able to get tickets last year through the Facebook thing. Such a pain in the dick.

Sethy was on the air this morning talking about the logistics of the festival.  Said at first he wanted to make a latin rock festival but only one person in a million would show up being Hutch.  Also it's not a natural show for DC only if it was in Zimbabwe

Last year facebook, this year twitter.  Very annoying that they want us to sign up for some needless web site to get tickets.  I will say I actually see a little us of facebook, I don't see why anyone would want to be on twitter other than they have no life at all.

either you can keep up your little protest because "twitter is stupid" and remain ticketless; or you can play the game.  any hopes you had of me telling you what to do went down the toilet when your proceeded to insult me.  you fight the power.  i'll be at freefest.

Well, you don't actually NEED a Twitter page, it's not like their page is private, you can look right at their page and posts and click all their links. Just have their page oopen and it should automatically refresh itself whenever they tweet. Bitch MORE about free tickets.

ignorant view on what twitter is: another platform to talk about your feelings and ease your insecurities. for the teenagers and people who hate their fathers.

what twitter actually is: an easy congregate of news, information, and updates on whatever it is you feel necessary to care about, where brevity is the theme.

It's easy to bash Twitter if you've never actually used it.  There's a learning curve, but give it two months, and I guarantee you'll find it far more useful and amusing than your facebook page.  To me, it's an invaluable resource.  It can be whatever you want it to be, but if you can't find a use for it, it's probably because you lack imagination.

Well if IMP doesn't care about their long-time customers than they are quite foolish.  And when everyone is at Fillmore they will have no one to blame but themselves.

I probably only go to 6 or 7 of their shows a year now since I live in Baltimore

Well I have a vinyl record collection that is quite large.  I did say CD's weren't as good in sound quality on the first listen as vinyl records.  I had an ex-girlfriend who had twitter and she would read off the stupid tweets that people she knew would post and make fun of how boring some peoples tweets were.  I said if you found them boring just don't follow them anymore but she couldn't because I guess she wanted to have a lot of followers and she had like 1000 facebook friends.  Of course she probably had about 4 real friends.  And she actually cared what people thought about her that weren't her friends.

Guess what if someone i know has a monumental event they can either call me or text me to let me know.  If I am not important enough to be told then i don't need to know

Anyway myspace had a use when bands were on there.  Not really useful for communication.  I used facebook the 3 months that I was single.  I guess when you are in a relationship you don't have time for it.  Once in a while I will go on their and most of the stuff people post is completely irrelevant.  Oh you are out with these 15 people at this bar?  How long did that take out of your time at the bar to post.  Really like I care.  Or your kid just said something that you thought was funny?  Guess what no one else does.  Or they post some stupid thing that everyone else is posting.  I do like looking at photos but photobucket could be used for that and would be easier to use.

I have no idea what xanga is about.

This is a fantastic painting of how boring you are to me.

boring because i actually go to clubs that you guys worry that are douchey, travel around the world, hang out with friends and have actual face to face converations,  hike a mountain etc, instead of spending alll my free time on tiwtter and facebook.  If that is boring to you well i am happy to be boring.

well i guess it depends on how much you use social media.  If you are out and about and you are checking facebook every 20 minutes I am guessing you aren't being very social.  But a lot of things can keep you from being social.  Seeing a live band is truely a passive non social event.  Well I am sure in some cases that isn't true but in most cases you are just standing watching a band.  You have to do things in moderation.  But Facebook I would state is pretty anti-social medium in general.   But so is reading a book.  Or watching baseball on tv.

sigh. i bet you said this about facebook and myspace and xanga and cell phones and pagers and shorts and haircuts and dvd players and comic books and vinyl records. I know it's probably "against" some bullshit you believe in because SO many people use and Kim Kardashian tweets so it MUST be evil, just try it and then you can bitch about the flaws. Maybe your loser ass can actually get the link itself, I don't think IMP gives 2 squirts of piss if you have been buying tickets since you went to see The Cure in 1984 and quite frankly neither do I. But, I'm sure people will post it here. I'm excited for ZZ Top.

Well if IMP doesn't care about their long-time customers than they are quite foolish.  And when everyone is at Fillmore they will have no one to blame but themselves.

I probably only go to 6 or 7 of their shows a year now since I live in Baltimore

Lol, I have a Droid, but your wide, sweeping generalizations are fucking great. So, while I have no life and could continue arguing with you on this amazing message boards for sit-at-home-concert-going-loser-Twitter-havers, I'm going to get drunk with my real friends, which you don't think are real because I do in fact have a Twitter. Also, Twitter is fucking great, there, happy? Pretty sure someone else on here rattled off a list of reasns why Twitter is awesome. You know, some people fucking despise concerts, they do, I know a couple. So, to each their own, some people like shit for no reason, other people don't like shit for REAL reasons. So, instead of littering this thread with more of your really stupid bullshit, and my equally unncessary retorts, I'll stop. Because this is stupid. So, realize this is stupid and that you're stupid and I'm stupid and let's all DM each other the Twitter link, except to this guy.

Anyway, I'm excited for ZZ Top.

Update: If you check into the Virgin Mega Store in Bethesda in the next 15 minutes using four square you will definitely get a ticket or two.

**leaves work, drives to bethesda, crop dusts store**

Yada, pick me up a tumbler- just in case- if you see one with the "virgin" logo on it or something.. if it just has Branson's picture on it pass. thanks.

Be sure to only use Richard Branson ice cubes (http://overheadbin.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/05/03/11520266-never-drink-alone-on-virgin-atlantic-with-richard-branson-ice-cube?lite)

Or is it Richard D. James?

we all got this in the email blast last night because we are virgin mobile customers:

FreeFest Freemium Package ($49.50) - includes GA ticket, a charitable donation to Virgin Mobile USA's homeless youth shelter, FreeFest t-shirt, souvenir cup that comes with free fountain drinks throughout the festival, and early admission to festival grounds. Non-ticket items must be picked up at the festival on the day of the event.

My complaint is the same as last year. Basically only two people in a household can get free tickets.

Of course, if my wife and I were divorced and had different billing addresses, we could bring our kid.

Not very family friendly.

There is a 2 ticket limit per person/credit card/billing and shipping address. Over the limit orders will be cancelled. Must have ID matching name on ticket for entry.

I got 20 of those for free last night at the pre-sale pre-party for long time IMP customers.  I was hanging out unti 4 AM with Seth, Richard, Jack White, and the guys from zz top with the beards and they started handing out these packages.  Well except that mine is unlimited beer instead of soda.

you should have come to the pre-sale pre-party as there was no limit on tickets but you can always buy one ticket.  3 tickets for 50 bucks isn't bad.

Families are not the target audience. Freefest is as much a brand showcase as it is a concert. The promoters want young people who are still developing their own brand identities.

Virgin Mobile/Facebook/Twitter are more likely to ever get my five year old to be a user than they are me.

I'm in with a freeium ticket, worth the expense IMHO.  Not exactly the strongest of line-ups, lots of weak links on the bill, but it's the one event of the year lots of my fellow boardies are also at so it's all  good.  And I plan to be right in front of hutch all day and will make off with his tumbler when leaving so I can post a picture of it on Pinterest.

if this festival wasn't free/subsidized, a ticket would cost $100 or more.  giving $10 or $20 really seems like a no-brainer.

you only need one of the two words, but it's not an either/or - one word is a decoy, the other is the required word.  make sure you are providing the correct one (AKA providing only one can be risky, if you choose the wrong one - but usually it's pretty obvious which one is the decoy/unneeded)

Question! Any word on reserved pavilion seats? I'm just wondering for my 59 year old mom since she has a knee replaced and can't sit on the ground so well. For once in a long time, my mom and sister want to attend V-fest with me. I get the feeling that getting three tickets is going to be very tricky.

It's GA, you'll just have to get seats in the pavillion and keep them. Though you might want to reach out to see if they have handicapped seating available if her mobility is an issue.

For those of you who couldn't swing the tickets, I offer my condolences and hope that you'll have better luck tomorrow.

Yada offers you these words.

Yes, posting the information on an internet chatboard for something of limited quantity and high demand is always a bright idea.

 ::)

I got the presale information in email from Virgin Mobile as I am a customer.  So I guess I made the right move by not signing up for twitter.  I would tell everyone the information but I am sure as Twitter junkies you all know as well.

If you can't swing a free ticket out of 20,000 or more, you're doing something incredibly wrong.

Thanks and all! In 2010 and 2011, they had special tickets up for grabs for a price. It allowed people to keep their seats in a special section of the pavilion. I believe they started doing that after the insanity for seats that happened in 2009. (Believe me, it was nuts. My mom didn't leave her seat the whole day. Even if your friend holds your seat for you, you have to wait in line for them to allow you access, which at one point took at least an hour or so.)

In 2010 and with 2011, I had easy access to getting a seat for a band's set. Judging by the hard hitters they have this year, I don't think it's going to be that easy. Jack White and Nas are both pretty huge shit and I'm sure fans will keep seats for hours. (Back in 2009, the same situation happened because of Weezer)

Did you just move to DC from another part of the country or something?

I find it hard to believe you've never heard of the ones you list. I couldn't name a song by the ones you list, but cmon surely you've heard those names. Haven't heard of Nas or Dismemberment Plan? REally?

Now let's hope the set times of the bands I want to see over-lap.

I want to see:
jack white
m83
santigold
ben folds five
alabama shakes
portugal the man
future islands

and have never heard of NAS, Shrillex, Dismemberment plan, allen stone or das racist

so keep that in mind when making the schedule!!!  :)

actually was wrong I have heard of NAS as he did that album with Damian Marley.  Looked up dismemberment plan and still  don't know who they are

I'm going to make a wild guess here... M83 and Jack White will be part of the evening headliners. You have to have M83 play when it's dark outside because of their amazing light set up. A part of me gets the feeling M83 will play the field stage because it's more dance orientated music. And I'll also guess that Skrillex will probably play after M83. They did a similar set up last year with Empire of the Sun and DeadMau5.

Okay so here's my guess for which stage who is playing and I've put it in order of who I think will play first and all that jazz...

Field Stage - Future Islands (they'll probably be the opening act), Allen Stone, Das Racists, Santigold, Nas, M83, Skrillex (Most likely the headliner, if not, then it'll be M83),

Pavilion Stage - Justin Jones (I'm guessing he'll be the first on here), Trample By Turtles, Alabama Shakes, Portugal the Man, The Dismemberment Plan, Ben Folds Five, ZZ Top, and Jack White (I'm betting that ZZ Top and Jack White might even play together!!!)

freemiums were available along with the free & donation tickets.  so once the "on free" starts, go straight for those if that's what you want.  you can take a chance, try for free/cheaper and hope that there are freemiums left if you get shut out... or you can go for the sure thing right away.

I am from Baltimore.  I don't know why it is so suprising that I had never heard of dismemberent plan.  I listened to some of their stuff on Youtube and it wasn't like they had a lot of hits.  If you should be suprised of anything it would be Shrillex.  That person has like 16 million hits on their video.  But whatever I didn't like Dismemberment plan.  Or Das Racist for that matter.

I'm not surprised that people don't like Dismemberment Plan. Lord knows I don't. I'm just surprised that he listed all those other bands he knew and wanted to see, and hadn't even heard of DP. That's kind of like saying you've never heard of Fugazi around here.

I don't like Dismemberment Plan either.

I think Fugazi is pretty popular.  But I saw them in I think in 1992 at some abortion rights thing in Baltimore and I saw their prior bands as well like Embrace and Rites of Spring.   As to Clutch I would not know of them except they were at the 930 club 30th anniversary show.  I really didn't like them.  Evidently Baltimore bands are much better than DC Bands though I do like Screen Vinyl Image.

The tickets don't get emailed out until the 28th of Sept.  I have one person on top of my trickle down list for this event, but if she can't use them or doesn't want them they are yours.  Just pm me around that time to remind me.  Of course if you score something between now and then let me know so I can give them to another needy soul.

DFA, virginfest/freefest is always on the late side when it comes to publishing set times.  i used to get worked up about it, but now i'm zen and/or old about it.  in the end we're going to have a great time at the festival, most choices will be game-time decisions anyways, and it's not much use getting worked up about it too far ahead of time.

Any chance he'll play something that resembles an actual song and not an excuse to shred?

maybe things have changed and now he just shreds but listening to Blunderbuss there is hardly any shredding.. the songs are very compact.. probably averaging about 3 minutes in length!

you want shredding go see Trey Anastasio or Warren Haynes...

I think that's called "noodling", at least for the former.

Based upon past experience, does anybody know the answer to this...

...if you're lucky enough to get pavillion seats, can one or more of your party get up to pee or eat or wander the grounds while one of your party saves the seats? And can the wandering/eating/peeing party get right back into the pavillion, or do they have to wait in some kind of long line with people who don't have seats?

yes you can get up to go eat/pee/etc; yes another person can hold your seat; and yes the wanderer/pee'er/etc'er will have to wait in line with everyone else to get back in.

Other than the year Blink-182 headlined the pavilion , it's been easy to come and go from there.  They only clear out the GA pit between acts.

Do you get some sort of wristband to get in the pavilion when you get there early?  If I show up at 5:30 I'd be stuck on the lawn the rest of the night?  Thx!

i think 2:00 is a perfect time for the meetup.  so come on 'round the 932 at 2 PM for a chance to put a name and a voice to the forum handles.

I think you're making short shrift of the number of Portugal the Man and Trampled By Turtles fans we have on this board.

Look like our usual 2-3 time slot would be a good time to hang in 932.

Anyone seen a time for early entry?

i like TbT, and having them play in the background while hanging with folks at the 932 seems like a perfect way to enjoy them ;D

nope, no wristband.  first come first served.  if you get up from your seat you are liable to lose it.

I care, how else do we schedule the most important part of FreeFest which is the 9:30 forum meetup at 932?

That and M83 are the only real reasons that I'm sorry that I have to miss the festival. Will be working.

Why don't you all set up a few sub-times so that you get a few other chances to meet up? That and it allows for those who don't want to miss the 2-3PM shows to get a chance to mingle with 'the elite'.  :D

Suggesting other meet-up times is fine with me, other than wanting to see D-Plan and Ben Folds Five and avoiding the wubwubwub sounds, I'll be wandering between stages.  Would even consider meeting up during the early entrance time period.

My wife got all middle agey on me and didn't want to go Saturday. But my five year old started insisting that she "much rather go to a music festival than sit at home and do nothing." And of course my wife buckled.

God, I love my kid. Now we'll see how she actually endures five hours of live music. Maybe I won't love her so much once she starts complaining of boredom.

Good luck.  I took my oldest (7 at the time) to his first real rock show (U2 - insert snarky comments here) last summer.  In the beginning it was great seeing the look of awe and excitement on his face.  About halfway through he was finished though (not to mention I was getting tired of constantly picking him up so he could see).

This was of course a nighttime show, so YMMV.  At least it will be easy to pick you out of the crowd there.

Oh, and you won't be able to bring her into the 932 (I think?)

Thanks.

We've actually taken her to numerous shows, with varying degrees of success. I think her first show was Old 97's at Baltimore Artscape when she was a baby. She's been to two Seattle Bumbershoot Festivals, three Wolftrap shows (two Wilco, one David Byrne), and several outdoor things with local acts. I think the key to success is having other things for her to do (she loves to draw/sketch, food and drink are always a great diversion, sitting on the lawn is always a plus), and not being in the same place for too long. We'll shoot for Ben Folds, ZZ Top, and M83, with a dinner/roaming break during Alabama Shakes. So we'll be done by 8:50. Hopefully, that won't be too much.

I'll have to remember to ply her mom with lots of overpriced beer. Even if we can't be in the 932. Hope there are some decent options.

Does anybody know if outside food is permitted inside? The Merriweather website seems to imply it's ok for regular shows. But are there different rules for Freefest?

http://www.merriweathermusic.com/faq/

? No bottles, cans, or coolers.
? Only one empty or factory-sealed water bottle allowed per customer.
? No outside beverages.
? Personal food items in clear, disposable, non-glass containers are permitted.

To answer my own question, from the Baltimore Sun:
(looks like we're bringing three peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kid, lol).

YOU CAN BRING: Small tote-style umbrellas, (2) plastic factory-sealed water bottles or an empty reusable water bottle, small digital/disposable cameras, small blankets or beach towels, kid supplies when accompanying a child (i.e. stroller, kiddie food), sunglasses/hats/sunscreen, a valid photo ID to drink

YOU CAN'T BRING: Framed/large backpacks, knives/weapons, chains or chain wallets, chairs of any kind, outside food, coolers, tents or large umbrellas, video cameras, audio recording devices, professional cameras (changeable lenses), pets, drugs/paraphernalia, laser pointers

So short attention span review..

D-Plan were in tip top form, need to go see them in a club soon.
From what I heard of Ben Folds Five they sounded great if a little tentative.
Allen Stone and Alabama Shakes far to blah for may tastes
Would have like to have heard more pre Eliminator ZZ Top songs, but the new material harken back to that nicely.
Other than the honky tonky version of "Hotel Yorba" I found the first part of Jack White's show tedious.... Far to much I'm Jack White hear me roar and the tendency to over blow the arrangements.  However, the second half of the show was one of the most satisfying sets of music I've heard in a long time.  He and the band much more relaxed and much more subtle.

Perfect weather, great venue, always fun to catch with with friends.  Only disappointment was if anyone could cattle back on stage during the ZZ Top's set, Seth could have pulled it off.   Sadly that did not come to past...

At one point (it was 8pm and we were actually leaving), a drunken teenage girl sneered at us "Why do you have her here?", in reference to our five year old....who actually enjoyed herself, in the relatively short time we were there.

Unfortunately (to me) it seemed like this music festival was more about drunk teenagers in slutty costumes than anything else. Whereas Bumbershoot in Seattle (always my comparison point since it's the only music fest I have gone to on a somewhat regular basis) seems to be somewhat more subdued and family friendly.

As far as the music went, the one hour car ride took us 2.5 hours, and we missed half of Ben Folds. Agree with Kosmo, he sounded a little tentative, though did sound very good. Alabama Shakes were very boring. ZZ Top were pretty one note. I noticed they follow their setlist song for song every night, so it appears like we missed the string of hits at the end by opting to see M83....who we knew we didn't like after one song, and given that the Ferris Wheel line was too long and it was our daughter's bedtime...we opted to head home.

I play no mind to the teenagers at these things anymore, but Nici and I actually left 932 after being appalled/embarrassed by the women who decided to grind/dry hump/pole dance the guy she was with for an extended period of time.  It was pretty tragic...

Have to say it was pretty funny when Travis of D-Plan  got the audience to wave to people on the ferris wheel.

It's clear Alabama Shakes and Allen Stone have bright futures playing the large festival circuit for years to come.  Their competent  but entirely bland take on blues/soul/country did very little for me, and I  can just as easily see similar acts almost any year at the Greenbelt Blues festival.

I will have to say the festival was the worst run one I have attended.  First off parking.  Little Patuxent Parkway was closed and pushing all traffic towards the entrance next to the dinner theater.  Ok at 12:30 this entrance was already full.  Why have all trafic go toward an entrance that is closed.   And why shut down little patuxent parkway. So forced on 29 south get off the next exit and the other entrance is closed rude police officers there don't provide any information about parking.  Why have the cops there if they are just going to hang out and bullshit.  Park north of little patuxent parkway at some building parking lot.

Ok so Future Islands and Portugal the Man are good.  Ben Folds is awful as usual.   Maybe worst live performer.  Wait in line for ferris wheel while person after person just pisses right next to the ferris wheel taking their pants down in the process. chicks included.  What does the festival have no security.  Pissing with your pants down in front of children is a sex offence in maryland.  So turns out it costs 5 bucks to go on ride. then get in line for funnel cakes for like 30 minutes. turns out their are no funnel cakes in the line that is only marked funnel cakes.

All the lines for the spot a pots are like 30 minutes. the food lines are at least 45 minutes.  Who is running this?  This was the same scenario at florence and the machine.  I have never experienced this is all the years of going to MPP.  Santigold was awesome and so were M83.  Though I don't know why everyone has to be so rude.  If you see me and my wife holding hand why would you walk between us?  And then try again and then look i am the bad one when i shove you.  So many rude people.  I have been to 5 lollapaloozas in chicago several new port folk festivals. tons of other various festivals across north america and nowhere were people rude like they are here in maryland.  the constant shoving into people. Pushing people out of the way.

I say this will be my last virgin fest.  I would much rather play a couple hundred dollars to go to a well run festival.

The lack of available food lines/parking/bathrooms was certainly an issue.  It just felt like there were too many people packed in there for the amount of services that were available.

As far as drunken teenagers, well, you're going to a rock festival.  Not sure what else to expect.

Was nice to see sweetcell and meet kosmo and miss p as well.  One of the things I said during our chat - "Am I the only one who liked it more when it was at Pimlico?"

Still, a good time was had by all!

I enjoyed the show. I had no problems with massive lines unless I elected to wait in one. I was able to get into the main stage pit for any band I wanted. The music was good. What else could I ask for at a free festival?

Das Racist cancelling was lame.

Justin Jones was a great opener for the day. I thought the Fading Light material translated well live.

Future Islands is not my cup of tea, but it's nice that the singer has enthusiasm.

Allen Stone rocked. He's not an exceptional artist, but he's definitely talented. The crowd in the pit had a fun time.

Portugal the Man sounded fine but my buddy hated them so we left after a few songs.

Trampled By Turtles did not impress me, and I reluctantly skipped Dismemberment Plan to get in line for Ben Folds Five's pit.

Ben Folds Five was solid but not spectacular. The set was full of a lot of new songs that sound a lot like his solo material. Eh.

Santigold was fun. Alabama Shakes were OK. Nas was good at what he does.

ZZ Top was a good time. It felt like a fun way to connect between generations as I saw teenage girls, old dudes, and everyone in between dancing. Plus the seats were 1/3 empty so there were plenty of places to chill out.

I skipped M83 and Skrillex.

Jack White was predictably wild and somewhat weird. A lot of the songs sounded like Jack White covering himself. The new arrangements were awkward at times. I loved "Ball and Biscuit" though and I almost yearned for new arrangements again during a forced-feeling "Steady As She Goes." Good set, but strangely I almost liked the predictable Black Keys set more last year. Jack White couldn't really get a rhythm with his audience.

I'll agree that the new version of "Steady As She Goes" sounded like a work in progress, although I liked the 60s cool vibe he was going for with it.  It would be interesting to hear that would in the future...

i had a great time at freefest.  t'was nice to see a few old faces at the meet-up but once again it was very under-attended.  i realize this makes me old but i enjoyed trampled by turtles.   d-plan was good, but i preferred their last shows at the 930.  santigold was visually interesting but the music left me rather indifferent.  i walked over to the pavilion for alabama shakes but based on what i heard i didn't bother going in... ended up wandering around for food.  zz top are kinda one note, but what gawddam fun note it is. i really liked their set.  caught some of M83 and it was up and down.  to be fair i was pretty far back and i met up with a good buddy so spent more time talking with him than listening to the music.  the 40  minutes of JW that i did catch were interesting but i wouldn't have paid to see him.  i quite liked the early songs that he played on an acoustic, it got too noodly whenever he went electric.  i caught about 1 minutes of skrillex as i walked towards the western stage, once within earshot i decided that was enough, turned around and left.  folks were obviously having a great time but i can't stand dubstep.

parking was more problematic this year than in the past but i must have lucked out because it wasn't horrible for me (we arrived at 1:30).  coming from the north it us took 15 mins to crawl from 32 to a parking lot on the other side of the library, then a 10 minute walk to the venue.  parking at the mall right across from the north entrance, as i've done in past years, would have been faster but i suspect the decision to not allow that this year wasn't up to freefest/IMP/etc.  it was still better than any parking experience i've had at bristow!  listen, there is no easy way to pack 25,000 people and all their cars into such a small space and when mall owners, the police, the city, fire inspectors etc get into the mix there are bound to be delays.  yeah, i wish it would have taken me 5 minutes instead of 25.  boohoo.

there definitely was a shortage of bathrooms for the number of people there.  i certainly hope this is addressed in the future.

sounds like some folks had a much worse experience that i did, and that was too bad.  freefest remains one of the highlights of late summer for me.  a sincere thank you to everyone who made this festival happen!  here's to hoping that freefest comes back next year!

my friends that attended the sweetlife festival said there were a bunch of 15 year olds doing coke in the bushes by the upper part of the lawn.

i was sitting in the pavilion for animal collective earlier in the week.  during michachu and the shapes, it seemed like just about everyone in the pit lit up a joint....can't remember the last time i smelled so much weed.

what is going on with this generation

The mall probably disallowed parking because it was Columbus Day weekend, during which many stores like to hold sales. No big advertised sales between Labor Day and today.

Yes, you are. Believe me, not that much has changed other than it's generally gotten much, much tougher to get away with that anymore.

I'll remember to steer well clear of your lawn, old man.  ;)

Got there in time to run in and see Das Racist but as we were parking I checked Twitter and saw that they tweeted out that they were sick, then I saw a couple blogs post that they had broken up the night before. Total bummer.

What I noticed almost immediately was the "EDM" crowd, and by that I mean a bunch of underage kids wearing bright shit or almost nothing. I hate that crowd. I also felt like it was a lot less crowded than the last time I went.... It was fairly easy to get up front for Santigold and Nas and then get over to the Pavillion and was able to walk down and score seats on the side section for ZZ Top and Jack White. I'll say that the bathroom lines were absolutely insane, then it seemed that when the sun was going down that the food lines were insane.

The sound was terrible for Nas, Santigold had a great set, but the crowd seemed a little out of it. ZZ Top was awesome, it was a shame how many people around me were just sitting through it to see Jack White. I thought the last 20 or 30 minutes from ZZ Top was pretty great though. I loved Jack White, decided to leave before his encore to beat the crowd and it proved to be pretty easy to walk out and get on the highway without hitting any significant traffic. I had a blast, love Jack White, everything else was just icing on the cake. Did anyone take advantage of any of the Foursquare deals? There were certain places around Merriweather that you could check in and get a free beer or a free shirt. By the time I made it to the bar though they said that they were done with the beer offer. :(

Enjoyed the freefest.  I really was attending to see Ben Folds Five.  Arrived at 1:30, parked at the Mall despite the signage prohibiting same, saw part of Portugal, the Man.  Enjoyed it, but I think I need to see it indoors, in the dark.

Then had $9 pizza. No line for that. Enjoyed thee $9 pizza, despite its being $9.

Watched Trampled by Turtles from the pavilion and enjoyed them. Great banjo and fiddle action.

Stayed for Ben Folds Five and enjoyed that as well.  Lots of old stuff: Jackson Cannery, Underground, Song for the Dumped, Kate, Army, Magic, a few new songs, at least one Ben Folds song (Landed). Then I left.

As I was leaving, I saw Thatguy securing the area while Seth and a few other folks were loaded onto a lift and taken to the roof of the pavilion. Goodtimes.

There were lots of people wearing animal-headed outfits and other crazy stuff; kids these days.

Yeah, I was walking out at 9:51 and knew his set was scheduled to 10:20 so I figured it'd be a solid chunk. It was also freezing and I was in shorts and a tee shirt. Cripes the temperature drop was pretty drastic!

I enjoyed the fest.  Got there during Ben Folds Five, enjoyed them and Alabama Shakes.  Had a 15 minute wait to get a cocktail at 9:32 (longest wait I've ever had there), only time I got in line (thought we'd have access to the food truck).  ZZ Top was amazing, went down in the pit for them.  Liked Jack White quite a bit, but it was getting pretty chilly towards the end.

There's kids activities, a kids play area, and bands/theater aimed at kids at Bumbershoot in Seattle. But I guess Bumbershoot is more of an arts community festival that just happens to also have top notch music acts aimed at a more age diverse crowd.

Whereas Freefest is aimed simply at getting the 15-29 crowd roped into the corporate party animal corral(?) And I suppose that's the "cool" thing for alot of people.

Giving away tickets is good and bad. It's good because some music fans probably wouldn't go otherwise. It's bad because some of the people who go probably aren't really music fans.

But why would they want to get rid of the younger crowd? To me, that's clearly the target audience for Freefest at this point.

And I'm ok with that. There's still plenty of live music options in the area to satiate my live music needs.

or they could just move it back to pimlico if they want a bigger crowd or decrease the size of the corwd.  Why can't a music festival appeal to all age groups.  And not having enough spot-a-pots, food vendors or securit, or parking is not related to the age of the crowd.

One thing I will say is when I was at Montreal Jazz Fest and the Music Festival in Quebec City it was nice to see all ages and races and different types of people at the festivals.

well it used to a multiple day event and organizers have said they envision it being like pitchfork.  I only went to two nights of scapescape but I will say it was easier to park, easier to get food by 1000, easier to go to the bathroom by 1000, and better crowd.  If you like that comparison.

It's the youngsters that the sponsors want, even require. They want to brand their brands on the kids' brains while they're still susceptible to branding, i.e. still building their brand loyalties and identities. Old folk ain't brandable. If it remains Freefest it will be geared to the kids.

And why can't we complain about a festival that is run badly.  They should know themselves that waiting a half hour to go in a spot-a-pot is unacceptible.  No clear directions on where to park when we have always been able to park in the mpp parking lot is unacceptible.  With cops directing us in circles.  hour long food lines is either unacceptable or you let people bring their own food in.  On the lollapalooza forum after every festival the organizers start threads where people can complain about that years festival.

I haven't experienced problems with the festival in the past either at mpp or at pimilico.  So I am not complaining just to complain.  Festival had problems either fix them or dont' do it next year.  I am guessing they let more people in this year.  I didn't attend last year so I don't know how that went down.

As the food lines were an issue at Florence and the Machine as well I think they might have problems at Mpp overall but never bathroom lines like they had.

well like I have said before I have virgin mobile service and an LG phone.  So they can have this attitude that it is just kids they want but then they will probably fail as a company. While I'm in general agreement with you, I will say that I peed twice at that building that looked like a barn near the pavillion, and it took me no more than five minutes to get through the line each time.

And if you get really desperate, pee in an empty plastic cup. You don't even have to wait in line to do that.

And if you don't like food lines, carry your own in. Just sayin.

And though beer lines were long, the 932 bar was empty. Yes, I sucked it up and paid $9.50 each plus tips for a couple of shitty beers to wash our dinner down with.

I also read that attendance was actually down this year.

No one is saying we are owed anything..

but most of us are professional concertgoers.. if the show is good we'll be there whether its free or not... if it sucks we won't go or will not go again.. if the organization sucks, whether its free or not, we're going to remark on that.. i mean we are professional concertgoers! :)

I actually think Seth values our feedback and gets a kick out of it even if we act a bit "entitled"..

by the way Seth if you're reading this thanks for bringing back PiL!!!!!!!!!!! Made my week.

The target audience is entitled teenagers, not professional concertgoers. One look at the lineup tells you that much!

I hear you

BUT Oh I don't know.. the true "professional" goes to just about anything.. people are amazed sometimes to hear about what I will go check out... and going to see the new bands the kids are into is part of any serious "professional concertgoers" dossier.. but you're right maybe I should distinguish between professional and hipster concertgoer

Festival had problems either fix them or dont' do it next year.

or don't attend.  no one is owed a festival (especially a free one).  speak with your wallet/feet.

I am guessing they let more people in this year.

I already said I won't be back and I have said that I would glady pay for a better line-up more day festival in the past.  But with the lines at Florence and the Machine and then the repeat here I think I am done going to MPP.  Which is a shame because it has been my favorite venue for decades.
