I invited a bunch of my neighborhood dad buds to come over with their kids. For the dads, I'll provide all the food, beer, whiskey, weed and chew a man could want. For the kids, I'll put a TV and Wii upstairs in my kid's room, couple bags of sugar, and a gallon of juicy juice or some shit and lock the door. Meanwhile, my wife goes shopping or some shit with a couple other wives. RESULT.

Don't take everything so personally.  I'm rather glad I can sometimes watch midweek futbol matches delayed without having the score ruined for me because not everybody watched it.  They don't know what they're missing, and I'm completely fine with that.

Being dead last in the league takes some time to recover from; however, the last few games of the year were sell outs.

Try and pay attention.

soccer bashes itself by being so boring.  And why would you think talking about a sport that no one likes in a thread about a sport everyone loves is going to end up with anything but bashing.

When you say sold out you mean every seat in rfk was filled? Or do you mean they only sell seats for a 1/3rd of the stadium and when they fill those they call it a sell-out?

Interestingly enough the Ravens major sports area team to win the their leagues championship and they are even the last team to appear in championship.  Capitals appeared in 1998.

Washington Wizards/Bullets 1978  (last appearance 1979)
washington nationals\montreal expos- never (1969 franchise first year)
washington capitals - never (1974 franchise first year)
Washington Redskins - 1991
Baltimore Ravens = 2000
Baltimiore Orioles 1983

the blue jays were also denied the opportunity to go for the threepeat that year.  i remember the talk of an all-canadian world series... gawd that would have been awesome.  the conspiracy theorist in me still believes that the '94 season was derailed by american insiders that couldn't stand the thought of the championship going north of the border for a third time.

Great victory for the Ravens.  But the NFL has to get their game together.  Ridiculous long half-time show.  And the ridiculous long light delay.  This almost cost the Ravens the game.  It was heading for a blow-out and let the 49ers get back in the game.  Also, as I was in a bar drinking it got me out of my buzz.

Last Wednesday, I decided that instead of just watching the game with my buddy and my 2 kids, I'd invite one or two other dudes on my street and their kids. That idea snowballed (thanks wife) and the result was 22 damn kids running around upstairs breaking shit. And there were probably 15 adults, meaning a shortage of chairs and I had to sit on the damn floor and didn't even get any wings.

congrats to the ravens!

i can't imagine the sh*t-storm that would have ensued had SF come back and won after the blackout.

had a pretty big party at our place.  made way too much food, highlights were buffalo chicken perogies, curried potato & fava perogies, BBQ'ed spicy maple ribs, fresh baked bread, more dips that we knew what to do with, and 2 kinds of homemade cake.  i somehow managed not to eat too much.  good thing the stuff was so tasty b/c i'll be eating it all week...  4 different types of homebrew were consumed.  people brought commercial beers but i don't thing a single one was opened.  overall the culinary experience was better than the game IMO ;D

Also, as I was in a bar drinking it got me out of my buzz.

you should sue the NFL for compensation.

I just like how all the announcers on the pre-game show picked against the ravens in every single round.  Even shannon sharpe picked against the ravens yesterday.  Only one guy out of 5 picked the ravens.  With such bad accuracy I hope they just give up predicting games.  They have proven they can't pick a winner.  WHy continue the charade.

The one good thing at the bar was everyone was screaming and a dj was playing so I heard zero things the announcers said during the game.

you've completely missed the point (again).  winners aren't predestined.  on paper, the 49ers were the better team and were the understandable favorite.  the ravens were the better team on the field and won, for whatever reason... ever hear the expression "on any given sunday"?  ever heard of an upset?  you can't all pick an upset, otherwise it's not an upset.  so guessing the winner wrong, on one game, isn't grounds for suspension.

however:
i'm always been a supporter of the underdog and very glad that the Ravens won the game.  seriously getting tired of the announcers during the game.  especially banter like "You know Jim, in 1975 the Columbus Combines came back to win after being down 21 to 6 at the half".    (all sports announcers are name Jim).

the "coverage" (term used very, very loosely) during the blackout was downright painful.  we all know those hacks are talentless but during a regular show there are enough graphics and video highlights to hide the fact that these guys are idiots.  but during the blackout there was nothing to hide behind and they predictably failed to rise to the challenge of filling time with interesting banter.

just got this link from Hoya - nails it:

Good on ya, mate!

I should also point out that the double or nothing big spenders pool ended in a draw with Seth and ggw making it all the way the Super Bowl having no one different left to pick.  Helluva year for Seth on the gambling front.

Yes, the Redskins and 30 other teams are toast. In my face. Don't be such a sourpuss, seeing 1 semi-related stabbing is surprising because in San Francisco they were fucking rioting over the World Series. I thought there would have been a crazier reaction from Baltimore. Seemed like a jovial celebration.

I would have lit tons of shit on fire. I feel that's an insanely appropriate way to celebrate a team winning a Super Bowl.

I love following sports but setting aside four hours to watch a game is beyond me....it has been at least a decade since I watched an entire American football game....I don’t know if American football even meets the definition of sport as trying to intentionally hurt people does not seem sporting....

Frankly there are no more arguments to be made in favor of the NFL now that it’s proven playing the game has such negative consequences for health not to mention the collusion among owners to keep Kap out

Maybe some day Americans will wake up and abandon the game

I used to think like that. I didn't watch a single game of football between something like the 1986 Super Bowl and a few years ago. Probably 25 football free years. But my wife started insisting on needing to have the Big Game on so she can watch the commercials. So I said fuck it. It's only four hours of the year since I literally only watch the Big Game. So I settled in and watched this year, and the game was boring as fuck. And at about 8pm my wife got bored with the commercials and started frantically cleaning the house and insisting on what a lazy fuck I was for just sitting on the couch watching football for four hours in a year and not joining her in the cleaning. Of course truth be told I watched basketball on Saturday night for a couple of hours as well though those were the first two sporting events I've watched in 2019.

Ok fellas...how much avg time do you spend ANNUALLY on watching/attending sporting 'things'

based on what people have said here...avg is 400+ hours a year for a bunch of you

you should include time spent reading box scores and watching ESPN like recaps/draft picks and 'fantasy' type things

also, I think sporting is not comparable to Arts like musical entertainment
You can feel free to eviscerate this comment

sporting events rarely have more than a few minutes of shelf life...where as music lasts generations

I probably spend 300+ hours per year watching movies and another 100+ watching tv shows, so it would be hypocritical of me to criticize people who spend 400+ hours a year on sports or 400+ hours a year on live music. It's all mindless entertainment that doesn't make us better people.

also...Joe Strummer
while he's not the musical genius of people like Dylan, Bowie, James Brown and Superorganisam
his influence is huge...if not on music and musicians in general ...me in particular

Listening to the clash as a pre-teen in no simple terms, changed my life
They impacted so many areas of my life then and now...

Now if I'd been 30 and heard the clash, not sure it would have been the same...

there is no moment in watching other people play sports that ever had that kind of impact (for me)

400 Hrs is less than 8 hours a week. I went from probably a 600+ hour routine (NBA, college basketball, MLB, NFL) to basically nothing.

I go to a couple of Nats or Orioles or Mets games a year.

Stopped watching Sports on TV altogether. Usually attend a SuperbOwl party, but skipped it this year.

I have replaced a lot of that time with show-going.  I have heard myself say something to the effect of: "My team never loses at the rock show."

Watching professional sports got me into playing those sports in high school. Some of the friends I made playing sports remain among my closest.

Although I will say my sports watching has declined greatly in the last 2-3 years. I can't even stand to watch the NBA anymore and not only because the Wizards are a trainwreck. I watch the skins, catch the Caps when I can and go to half a dozen baseball games a season.

I've certainly lost at rock shows. Some i've seen were so disappointing that I regret having spent my time and money attending.

In the year 2018, less than 10.

I used to dedicate Sundays to binge drinking and football (pre children).  I watch baseball playoffs (sometimes), hockey playoffs (sometimes), and a football game or two per year at this point.

Monday: West Ham v Liverpool (2 Hours)
Tuesday: Wolverhampton v Shrewsbury Town (2)
Wednesday: Everton v Man City (2), Warriors v Spurs (1.5*)
Saturday: Fulham v Man Utd (2), Liverpool v Bournemouth (1*), Huddesfield v Arsenal (1*), Pebble Beach Pro-Am (3.5*), Warriors v Suns (3*)
Sunday: Tottenham v Leicester (2), Man City v Chelsea (2), Pebble Beach Pro AM (4.5*)

So total last week: 26.5 hours, but that was a bit extra as Phil Mickelson was in contention at Pebble so I watched (I usually only watch the majors, or when Phil has a chance to win).  The weekday soccer matches are on in my office.

Also, the * indicates that I only had video on in the background and "we" were listening to music instead.

SF should have elected to kick off in OT. The team with "last ups" basically has four downs to make 10 yards.

As much as I hate to say it . . . Mahomes is unstoppable. He is the best quarterback right now. Dynasty material.

But if both teams score, team one gets the ball back in a next point wins scenario. I think they played it right!

each team has 4 downs to make 10 yards... it's sorta the foundation of the game.

^ this.  winning the OT coin toss and electing to receive is always the play.  don't think i've ever heard of a team choosing to kick first.

True, however if the team receiving the ball first luckily scores 1st, team number 2 will get 4 downs no matter what vs. Punting.

That's what I was getting at. Also, if Team 1 scores seven, Team 2 has the option to go for a two point conversion and then there is never a third possession.

Kyle Shanahan blew it by taking the ball first in overtime. Or did he? (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/02/12/super-bowl-overtime-kyle-shanahan/)
