I invited a bunch of my neighborhood dad buds to come over with their kids. For the dads, I'll provide all the food, beer, whiskey, weed and chew a man could want. For the kids, I'll put a TV and Wii upstairs in my kid's room, couple bags of sugar, and a gallon of juicy juice or some shit and lock the door. Meanwhile, my wife goes shopping or some shit with a couple other wives. RESULT.

"All right you guys, how about we all take our shirts off for the second quarter and agree that there's nothing weird about that," I plan to announce before kick-off.

I heard football was for dumb people and soccer was for intellectuals. Any truth to this?

How come everyone talks about how popular soccer is and how much they love the game and yet hardly anyone goes to dc united games.
-
oh i get it! how clever y'all turning it into another bashin' soccer thread!
i tell you one thing..nobody becomes a frickin vegetable because they play soccer... y'all keep enjoying your american football and enabling a bunch of future cripples, vegetables, and suicides.. don't feel responsible though!

Don't take everything so personally. I'm rather glad I can sometimes watch midweek futbol matches delayed without having the score ruined for me because not everybody watched it. They don't know what they're missing, and I'm completely fine with that.

Except for these guys, (http://[quote author=hutch link=topic=23183.msg354129#msg354129 date=1359743483) as a start.
There are inherent in anything done at the top level.

Being dead last in the league takes some time to recover from; however, the last few games of the year were sell outs.
Try and pay attention.

soccer bashes itself by being so boring. And why would you think talking about a sport that no one likes in a thread about a sport everyone loves is going to end up with anything but bashing.

When you say sold out you mean every seat in rfk was filled? Or do you mean they only sell seats for a 1/3rd of the stadium and when they fill those they call it a sell-out?

Society puts way too much emphasis on watching grown men and women playing games. We really should put the focus on things that really matter....

Interestingly enough the Ravens major sports area team to win the their leagues championship and they are even the last team to appear in championship. Capitals appeared in 1998.
Washington Wizards/Bullets 1978 (last appearance 1979)
washington nationals\montreal expos- never (1969 franchise first year)
washington capitals - never (1974 franchise first year)
Washington Redskins - 1991
Baltimore Ravens = 2000
Baltimiore Orioles 1983

washington nationals\montreal expos- never (1969 franchise first year)

the blue jays were also denied the opportunity to go for the threepeat that year. i remember the talk of an all-canadian world series... gawd that would have been awesome. the conspiracy theorist in me still believes that the '94 season was derailed by american insiders that couldn't stand the thought of the championship going north of the border for a third time.

Is that why Canada forces Hockey to go on strike every few years too?
Actually, I blame America for that one too.

Was there supposed to be a football game tonight?
-
I predicted perfectly the number of points the 49ers would get. Unfortunately I predicted the Ravens would get only 17 points.
-
ok game . . . loved the 49niners almost comback. loved the whole lights out controversy. loved seeing the 49niners coach get all pissy. the commercials . . . not that great this year. god i ate way too much, drank way too much, and had a good time.
-
that axe commercial was incredible.
-
Going to the parade tomorrow!
-
i'm always been a supporter of the underdog and very glad that the Ravens won the game. seriously getting tired of the announcers during the game. especially banter like "You know Jim, in 1975 the Columbus Combines came back to win after being down 21 to 6 at the half". (all sports announcers are name Jim).
-
They do not like the Ravens. No worries. Because the Ravens WON. TAKE THAT SPORTSCASTERS.
-
Great victory for the Ravens. But the NFL has to get their game together. Ridiculous long half-time show. And the ridiculous long light delay. This almost cost the Ravens the game. It was heading for a blow-out and let the 49ers get back in the game. Also, as I was in a bar drinking it got me out of my buzz.
-
All I took away from the game is how god damn incredible Beyonce looks.

Just think even if you are super ugly you can have an attractive wife..well as long as you have 500 milllion dollars.
-
Last Wednesday, I decided that instead of just watching the game with my buddy and my 2 kids, I'd invite one or two other dudes on my street and their kids. That idea snowballed (thanks wife) and the result was 22 damn kids running around upstairs breaking shit. And there were probably 15 adults, meaning a shortage of chairs and I had to sit on the damn floor and didn't even get any wings.

I made these last night and they were terrific. Left them in the fridge overnight.
-
congrats to the ravens!
i can't imagine the sh*t-storm that would have ensued had SF come back and won after the blackout.
had a pretty big party at our place. made way too much food, highlights were buffalo chicken perogies, curried potato & fava perogies, BBQ'ed spicy maple ribs, fresh baked bread, more dips that we knew what to do with, and 2 kinds of homemade cake. i somehow managed not to eat too much. good thing the stuff was so tasty b/c i'll be eating it all week... 4 different types of homebrew were consumed. people brought commercial beers but i don't thing a single one was opened. overall the culinary experience was better than the game IMO ;D
Also, as I was in a bar drinking it got me out of my buzz.
you should sue the NFL for compensation.

Two Super Bowls in a row with a safety! Glad to see that the underappreciated safety is making a comeback this decade.
-
So a group of use were in a super crowded bar. During the lights out part of the game this girl squeezes through and bumps into my wife. And then she apologizes profusely to my wife for bumping into her boobs. And then she apologizes to me for it. And after she is done apologizing she grabs both of my wifes boobs and squeezes them. That was pretty weird. Anyway I did get wings.

no shit!!!
Phil Simms is the worst. Even after the Ravens won, he said something like he expects the 49ers to be around for a long time, however the Ravens will be nothing without Ray Lewis.
I think he just had a hardon for Krappytats.

I heard that. Because they totally didn't win any games without him and Kreuger can't tackle AT ALL. What an ass.
-
I just like how all the announcers on the pre-game show picked against the ravens in every single round. Even shannon sharpe picked against the ravens yesterday. Only one guy out of 5 picked the ravens. With such bad accuracy I hope they just give up predicting games. They have proven they can't pick a winner. WHy continue the charade.
The one good thing at the bar was everyone was screaming and a dj was playing so I heard zero things the announcers said during the game.

you've completely missed the point (again). winners aren't predestined. on paper, the 49ers were the better team and were the understandable favorite. the ravens were the better team on the field and won, for whatever reason... ever hear the expression "on any given sunday"? ever heard of an upset? you can't all pick an upset, otherwise it's not an upset. so guessing the winner wrong, on one game, isn't grounds for suspension.
however:

the "coverage" (term used very, very loosely) during the blackout was downright painful. we all know those hacks are talentless but during a regular show there are enough graphics and video highlights to hide the fact that these guys are idiots. but during the blackout there was nothing to hide behind and they predictably failed to rise to the challenge of filling time with interesting banter.
just got this link from Hoya - nails it:

shut the fuck up. watch the game . . . and shut the fuck up. jesus fucking christ. just shut the fuck up. did i say shut the fuck up. once, twice, ok, but to keep droning on and on and on and on like two strippers fighting over a dollar bill is enough. shut the fuck up.
via nfl playoff thread.
let's all just please stop fighting over that one dollar bill with atomicfront. as hutch suggested, it's really starting to turn this forum to shit.

Good on ya, mate!
I should also point out that the double or nothing big spenders pool ended in a draw with Seth and ggw making it all the way the Super Bowl having no one different left to pick. Helluva year for Seth on the gambling front.
Needless to say, we all expect the price of beer to drop very soon. Or Seth's Mrs driving around in a new Tesla S.
-
I had another pool elsewhere that ended the same way, except this person elected to go the final round and took SF
whoops
now about that blown call...
my teams have been on the wrong end of blown calls and I always say it shouldn't have come down to one call
I mean, 4th & 5 with a minute left...shouldn't have been that close if you were the better team Mr Gore
-
We are the champions, my friend!
-
Downtown was nuts today. Made it into M&T before they closed the gates.
-
I got into M and T when they opened and was in the 4th row by the tunnel. It was crazy. Crazy in a good and bad way. People are jerks, but the nice fans made it worthwhile. Got an awesome picture of ray with the trophy!
-
Honestly surprised there was only 1 stabbing.
-
that was not connected to the event.
-
DFA. you're a jerk. skins are toast, ravens are champions. deal with it, ya crybaby.
-
Yes, the Redskins and 30 other teams are toast. In my face. Don't be such a sourpuss, seeing 1 semi-related stabbing is surprising because in San Francisco they were fucking rioting over the World Series. I thought there would have been a crazier reaction from Baltimore. Seemed like a jovial celebration.
I would have lit tons of shit on fire. I feel that's an insanely appropriate way to celebrate a team winning a Super Bowl.

actually it was. The family of the victim is upset at the city for stating such. The kids stabbed were there to see the parade.

somebody stabbed in this country for no reason . . . shocking.

found this
Darren Rovell Verified account @darrenrovell
$36,395: What a fan just paid on StubHub, including fees, for two seats at the 50 to Super Bowl LIII this Sunday.
-
I didn’t watch either...apparently it sucked
-
I also, did not watch.
I did, though, win $$$.00 on a bet I placed in Vegas.

only thing worse than the game itself was the half-time show. there is a silver lining tho: some awesome humor came outta it.

It's so funny that I started this thread because it's literally the last time I gave a shit about football. I went to the super bowl celebration and decided the sport was not for me.

I had children over for my now-annual Superbowl party, so while indeed, I did smoke superbowls earlier in the day, I did not during the game so as not to influence the children. I did, however, have a bowl of weed gummies that I put on the top shelf in the TV room and the adults helped theyselves

I love following sports but setting aside four hours to watch a game is beyond me....it has been at least a decade since I watched an entire American football game....I don’t know if American football even meets the definition of sport as trying to intentionally hurt people does not seem sporting....
Frankly there are no more arguments to be made in favor of the NFL now that it’s proven playing the game has such negative consequences for health not to mention the collusion among owners to keep Kap out
Maybe some day Americans will wake up and abandon the game
-
Maybe some day Americans will wake up and abandon the game
with confidence I can say that will never happen
it's more likely Trump will serve a 3rd term than Americans will stop loving American Football

I used to think like that. I didn't watch a single game of football between something like the 1986 Super Bowl and a few years ago. Probably 25 football free years. But my wife started insisting on needing to have the Big Game on so she can watch the commercials. So I said fuck it. It's only four hours of the year since I literally only watch the Big Game. So I settled in and watched this year, and the game was boring as fuck. And at about 8pm my wife got bored with the commercials and started frantically cleaning the house and insisting on what a lazy fuck I was for just sitting on the couch watching football for four hours in a year and not joining her in the cleaning. Of course truth be told I watched basketball on Saturday night for a couple of hours as well though those were the first two sporting events I've watched in 2019.

Ok fellas...how much avg time do you spend ANNUALLY on watching/attending sporting 'things'
based on what people have said here...avg is 400+ hours a year for a bunch of you
you should include time spent reading box scores and watching ESPN like recaps/draft picks and 'fantasy' type things
also, I think sporting is not comparable to Arts like musical entertainment
You can feel free to eviscerate this comment
sporting events rarely have more than a few minutes of shelf life...where as music lasts generations

I probably spend 300+ hours per year watching movies and another 100+ watching tv shows, so it would be hypocritical of me to criticize people who spend 400+ hours a year on sports or 400+ hours a year on live music. It's all mindless entertainment that doesn't make us better people.
-
There is no collusion. Each owner is independently aware of the fact that Colin K. is locker room poison who will co-opt your team for his personal promotion. He'll never play again. Thankfully.

Its hard to take seriously someone advocating how all hobbies aside from listening to music are inferior while at the same time citing Joe Strummer as their prime example. The Clash fucking suck.
There was definitely a time in my life I spent 400+ hours a year watching sports but that's in the rearview.

maybe some day Americans will wake up and abandon the game
sporting events rarely have more than a few minutes of shelf life...where as music lasts generations
It's all mindless entertainment that doesn't make us better people.
There is no collusion. Each owner is independently aware of the fact that Colin K. is locker room poison who will co-opt your team for his personal promotion. He'll never play again. Thankfully.
Joe Strummer was a middle class phony.
The Clash fucking suck.
-
Its hard to take seriously someone advocating how all hobbies aside from listening to music are inferior
actually never said that...
but one could easily infer that I think listening to Music>watching sports
-
Well my comment about American Football is probably wishful thinking but you never know....Donald Trump is President and Bill Cosby is in jail...I also don’t see many people letting their kids play the game....in my circle of acquaintances I only know two people with young kids that play... Tom Brady’s dad famously said many years ago that knowing now what he didn’t know then he would not have let Tom Brady play at the time he did

Participation is down, but there's a long way to go before extinction.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2018/08/28/high-school-football-participation-continues-to-drop-as-concerns-over-cost-injuries-persist/?utm_term=.432b21b40640

Of course....it’s unlikely to happen but it could happen....the last years have taught us anything can happen
-
I mean schools might ban it due to concerns about getting sued...anything could happen
-
also...Joe Strummer
while he's not the musical genius of people like Dylan, Bowie, James Brown and Superorganisam
his influence is huge...if not on music and musicians in general ...me in particular
Listening to the clash as a pre-teen in no simple terms, changed my life
They impacted so many areas of my life then and now...
Now if I'd been 30 and heard the clash, not sure it would have been the same...
there is no moment in watching other people play sports that ever had that kind of impact (for me)
participating in sports as an individual and on teams....as well as alternative sports like skateboarding
those things had a huge impact on my life
How has watching pro sports had an impact on your life?
other than 600 Sundays spent indoors yelling at a screen
We need a new name for this thread.....Hyperbole much?
how about SuperBole or Super Brawl
-
Ok fellas...how much avg time do you spend ANNUALLY on watching/attending sporting 'things'
based on what people have said here...avg is 400+ hours a year for a bunch of you
you should include time spent reading box scores and watching ESPN like recaps/draft picks and 'fantasy' type things
also, I think sporting is not comparable to Arts like musical entertainment
You can feel free to eviscerate this comment
sporting events rarely have more than a few minutes of shelf life...where as music lasts generations
400 Hrs is less than 8 hours a week. I went from probably a 600+ hour routine (NBA, college basketball, MLB, NFL) to basically nothing.
I go to a couple of Nats or Orioles or Mets games a year.
Stopped watching Sports on TV altogether. Usually attend a SuperbOwl party, but skipped it this year.
I have replaced a lot of that time with show-going. I have heard myself say something to the effect of: "My team never loses at the rock show."
-

Watching professional sports got me into playing those sports in high school. Some of the friends I made playing sports remain among my closest.
Although I will say my sports watching has declined greatly in the last 2-3 years. I can't even stand to watch the NBA anymore and not only because the Wizards are a trainwreck. I watch the skins, catch the Caps when I can and go to half a dozen baseball games a season.
I've certainly lost at rock shows. Some i've seen were so disappointing that I regret having spent my time and money attending.
-

In the year 2018, less than 10.
I used to dedicate Sundays to binge drinking and football (pre children). I watch baseball playoffs (sometimes), hockey playoffs (sometimes), and a football game or two per year at this point.

Monday: West Ham v Liverpool (2 Hours)
Tuesday: Wolverhampton v Shrewsbury Town (2)
Wednesday: Everton v Man City (2), Warriors v Spurs (1.5*)
Saturday: Fulham v Man Utd (2), Liverpool v Bournemouth (1*), Huddesfield v Arsenal (1*), Pebble Beach Pro-Am (3.5*), Warriors v Suns (3*)
Sunday: Tottenham v Leicester (2), Man City v Chelsea (2), Pebble Beach Pro AM (4.5*)
So total last week: 26.5 hours, but that was a bit extra as Phil Mickelson was in contention at Pebble so I watched (I usually only watch the majors, or when Phil has a chance to win). The weekday soccer matches are on in my office.
Also, the * indicates that I only had video on in the background and "we" were listening to music instead.

Man City was sick against Chelsea
Happy for Kun

So when do you have time for housework and home improvement projects? Let me guess, you don't sleep?

Most people have maid services and use contractors...
I see them everywhere here in Arlington
-
The Weekend is no Bruno Mars.
-
Not the showman Mars is but I enjoyed it. I like his music better than Mars’.
-
I thought that was pretty good...
I agree with STC: music wise much more up my alley than Bruno Mars
-
That dizzy tunnel segment weakened my stomach.
-
Also, were we ready for a Tracy Morgan car accident commercial??
-
Would you rather drink a Stella with Lenny or a Corona with Snoop?
-
.
-
Just when you think you know your fellow boardies... That halftime show was an abomination.
Also... My first beer in 38 days was... A Stella.
-
It’s relative....am I going to buy tickets tomorrow to the Weeknd at Cap One Arena? No
But I have seen way worse SB shows...
-
Didn't think it was the worst thing I'd ever seen but it certainly wasn't up there with the best SB halftime shows of all time like Prince or the University of Michigan Marching Band in Super Bowl III.

80% of the board wasn’t even alive for Super Bowl 3.

I guess I am stretching that this question belongs in this thread because I kept seeing advertisements for it and I could not believe what I was seeing . . . but did anybody watch the Equalizer with Queen Latifah?
-

So how was it?!? Tell us more! Were your hands shaking?

Travis Kelce, now considered a piece of shit, for what he did to the coach.
Love, to see it!

My daughter: "Why is he so gay?"
-
Maybe it's me, for I love a good halftime show, no matter who the artist is . . . but this sucks.

Usher performing.
Daughter: "He's garbage."

Your daughter, bringing the lolz.

Potatoes!

Last song slapped but the rest was milk-toast-esque

Yes, the last song saved his Michael Jackson ass.

Next year, Jelly Roll.

Un,real. Chiefs are going to win; Niners falling the fuck apart. Go home.

On the edge, of my seat.
One of the best superbowls I have seen in awhile!

SF should have elected to kick off in OT. The team with "last ups" basically has four downs to make 10 yards.
-
As much as I hate to say it . . . Mahomes is unstoppable. He is the best quarterback right now. Dynasty material.
-
SF should have elected to kick off in OT. The team with "last ups" basically has four downs to make 10 yards.
But if both teams score, team one gets the ball back in a next point wins scenario. I think they played it right!

each team has 4 downs to make 10 yards... it's sorta the foundation of the game.

^ this. winning the OT coin toss and electing to receive is always the play. don't think i've ever heard of a team choosing to kick first.

True, however if the team receiving the ball first luckily scores 1st, team number 2 will get 4 downs no matter what vs. Punting.

That's what I was getting at. Also, if Team 1 scores seven, Team 2 has the option to go for a two point conversion and then there is never a third possession.

Kyle Shanahan blew it by taking the ball first in overtime. Or did he? (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/02/12/super-bowl-overtime-kyle-shanahan/)

I watch one game a year so know nothing of the announcers. But this guy was definitely annoying as fuck.
