Title: The Video Game Thread
Post by: miss pretentious on June 27, 2008, 09:58:00 am
We need one. So I'll start it off for Nintendo geeks. Also I want Boom Blox. Now. kthx.

In case you missed it, Amazon is doing all Nintendo deals today with Gold Box + Lightning deals every couple hours. http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27)

Super Smash Brothers is like $25.99 now and I'mma wait for Galaxy to go up before I finally pick these two titles up.

Also, if you can't seem to find  Mario Kart for Wii (http://kotaku.com/5020167/amazons-gold-box-kick-off-with-super-cheap-ssbb) anywhere...it may end up on a big sale at about 5 p.m.

I'm hoping to buy a Wii and Wii Fit for the wife's birthday, but damned if I can find it anywhere (and I've spent at least 30 seconds looking at Amazon and Buy.com).

Can anyone recommend the best way to get one? Unfortunately I don't have the ability right now to drive around from store to store looking either.

Currently am emailing with people selling "new! still sealed in box!" Wiis on Craigs List and that's the way I'll probably go, unless someone says "ZOMFG, teh wee @ wii-b-toyz'n'shit 2nite zoobrah!"

That's how the wife found ours at Christmas.

we got a wii on launch night.. my girlfriend had gotten into a bad car accident a couple days before it came out, but refused to not go get it (went to get it neck brace and all), but honestly i have found it to be incredibly disappointing.  maybe as far as my enjoyment goes, the right games haven't come out for it yet.  i am looking forward to playing the force unleashed on it.  we got a 360 last summer (and after actually not opening it for 2 months), shortly after actually starting to play it we packed up the wii).  i really like the whole achievement point system and the xbox live setup compared to the wii's online stuff.  i don't know.  i'm still working on gta4.  i am enjoying it.

I have almost no interest in the Wii, as I prefer PC gaming to consoles (and the console games I like aren't gonna be on the Wii). But it seems like something the wife would like, especially the Wii Fit thing. Plus we've got a 4-year-old and I'll bet he'd like the Wii games.

So instead of getting the super-awesome-goddamn-fun 360 or PS3, I'm being pretty terrific and sacrificing my happiness for the good of others.

Thanks for the link eros, I'm on it.

Can we get back to video games now?

Venerable and I have been discussing the merits of GHIV - World Tour and comparing it to Rock Band.

 Thoughts?

Agreed...I just wanted to give sweetcell a hard time.

Just bought Rock Band for the Wii + my wife is out of town next week = ROCK BAND 24/7

I'm curious to see if the drum setup is similar or different in GH4.  Anyone have any pictures of what it will look like?

I just got a wii about a month ago.  Bought it on line at best buy after finding it in stock there via wii tracker.  Keep checking wiitracker...things pop up and are then gone a few hours later.

I've had loads of fun with Mariocart, also just got Resident Evil 4 which is a blast so far.  I also got a game called No More Heroes which is supposed to be great but I haven't even opened it yet since i'm stuck on RE4 right now.

I haven't owned a console since the atari days, and have never been into gaming despite my computer geek and gadget geek background.  But I love the wii and am loving these immersive games like Resident Evil.  Cutting into my sleep time...

My kids (4 and 6) like it too...mostly wii sports.  The one they can really play is golf.  Hilarious to watch..plus they love the miis I created for them.

I just bought Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy for $61 together. Woohoo.

I love Mario Kart so so so so so much.

Annnnd, I think I'm going to hold off on buying Wii Rock Band and just wait for Guitar Hero World Tour, especially after reading this IGN review. (http://wii.ign.com/articles/883/883962p1.html)

Any idea on how compatible the drums/guitars will be between Rock Band and GHWT?

My guess is that the equipment from GHWT will work with Xbox 360 version of Rock Band, but not the PS3 version (similar to how GHIII is now).

The Rock Band Equipment will not work with GHWT on both PS3 and 360 (similar to how it is now).

No idea on the wii, but we'll know soon enough.

Cool...I'm all set to rip into Rock Band, but fortunately it's still in the box if I change my mind.  Miss P is right...that review isn't great, and if I can get all of the functionality in GHWT, I might as well stick to that.

I have Mario Kart, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3. Metroid is OK but Zelda is weird. Mario Kart is the funnest thing ever.

I'm iffy on buying Smash Bros. I'm not sure I'd like it, but at $26, it might be worth trying out.

I loved it on GC and I've played it once at a friends house. It's neat because its one of those games you can use whatever controller you have sitting around: GC controller, Nunchuk, Wiimote, Classic Controller

you'll have to let us know how you deal with the wii's storage problem when you download the songs.  i hear that nintendo may be working on an external storage so that it's more download friendly.

Two HUGE points:

 (1) no world tour mode, and
 (2) no downloadable content

I doubt we'd (venerable and me) still be playing Rock Band on a weekly basis if those two features didn't exist.

Exactly...those are the big set-backs to me, but I'm not super into gaming, so I didn't know the Guitar Hero game was coming.  THis definitely changes things a bit....thanks for the heads up!

Hmm. Everyone always asks if I have it when they come over. I didn't like the earlier ones I played at other people's places, but I think I might get it just for when people come over. $26 is like 2 pizzas.

Yeah what is up with the PS3?  The game development is horrendous.  No wonder why they are losing money.  I absolutely loathe FPS, but the seem to be the only games which are being produced.  At least I guess right on Blu-Ray and at least decent games are still being released on PS2...

i've had rock band for like six months, i've played it quite a bit.  i played it a bunch this afternoon and i've been coming to the realization that i don't really enjoy it that much.  i will definitely say that the amount of fun is directly proportional to the number of people playing (the game is not fun in single player mode), but these are my issues with it:

 a) the rock band equiment that it comes with is garbage, but i'm sure basically all the reviews have said that.  poorly made and the stuff breaks easily and frequently.

 b) i don't like the layout of the drum set.  not that i'm great at drums, but i feel like i could do better if my arms and the other pads weren't necessarily in the way at times.  it doesn't feel 'natural' and everything is kind of crammed together.

 c) the drums are really fucking loud.  if you're going to play and hear over the drums, you have to crank the volume.

 d) i don't like the difficulty level.  i have played GH games quite a bit and they are harder.  i don't have a problem with RB being easier, but it gets to the point where the songs are mind-numbingly boring (not just because of the notes to be hit, but some of the song choices are really questionable and they just suck, IMO.  i don't mind playing songs i dont like i they're fun to play in the game).   even on hard/expert, a lot of the stuff is really easy, but then all the sudden you hit one of the one or two songs that are just ridiculously hard.  i don't know if it's just that my style of playing isn't suited to some songs, etc.

 e) i don't like that you have no choice but to play the same songs over and over and over again.  it seems like no matter what, when the songs are randomly picked for you (either from a random setlist or the ones that pop up that you're forced to play as individual songs), you end up playing the same tired songs (in bloom, that garbage song, that ok go song, etc) over and over and over again.

i have higher hopes for GH4, but i hope that they don't make it "artificially difficult" like they did GH3, where the arbitrarily added in extra notes to be played just to make songs harder.  i'm most of the way through both hard and expert in GH3, but there are songs i just can't beat.... like raining blood.  my fingers just do not do what the game requires me to do to pass certain parts.  i think it's a bit ridiculous to go from being able to relatively easily 5star the song on medium to failing like 30% in on hard when you've already beaten every other song on hard mode (without too much of a problem).

the drum set for GH4 looks a bit nicer (and sturdier) from what i've seen, but i still don't 100% like the way it's set up.. but i suck at drums anyway, so i'm sure i'll just be doing guitar/bass anyway.

the DLC is nice for rock band, but i feel like the stuff is coming out pretty slowly and it's relatively limited, though i have to say i am interested in playing some songs from dolittle when i get around to downloading them.

DLC for gh3 was absolute shit.

This part is absolutely true.  I haven't played the solo version in months, and have much more fun when people are rotating instruments and the singer chooses the song they wish to sing.  Makes for a lot of variety.

And I agree with much of what you said.  My thoughts:

I am totally in the minority here, but I prefer the RB Strat to the GH3 Les Paul.  I actually use the solo notes and prefer the feel of the strat to the Les Paul.  Mine is also still as responsive as it was the day I bought it, which I hear is rare.

On the drums and quality, we have broken a drum pedal and I couldn't recommend the steel drum pedal plate any more than I already do.  It just feels better as a drummer and it's stronger.  My one concern about that GHWT drums is that the bass pedal is not attached to any corssbar.  I see that sliding across the floor and falling over.  Otherwise, I think the GHWT drums will be an improvement.

The drums are a little loud (supposedly GHWT is going to fix that) however, we play in surround sound and it is always cranked up.  It is funny when the drummer fucks up and the rest of the band gets screwed up though.

I don't mind the difficulty. We treat it as a party game, not a challenge so it's fun more than anything else.  In tour mode we have run up against huge jumps between levels, so I wish that was more evened out.  What I do like about RB that I think you were saying with GH3 is the fact that RB tries hard to make it still feel like you're playing the song on a guitar (the progressions, the notes all make a little sense) unlike GH3.  I stopped playing Gh3 when I couldn't play a song in the game that I could nail in real life.  You were spot on when you called it "artificially difficult."

I agree with the repitition of songs, which is why I was warning the wii folks about the lack of DL content (we're over 100 songs now).  It will get boring fast without new content (not to mention the SigOth's that don't enjoy it as much as you do will really start to bitch).  However, I have no problem with three new songs a week (even if they suck) as long as there is one new album a month that doesn't suck.  Boston, The Cars and The Pixies were GREAT choices.

I've also really enjoyed the game more after I took on the drums with a mission.  It did get boring after a while when all I did was play guitar and all venerable did was play drums.  After I decided to practice the drums and he decided to take on the guitar, I think we both enjoy the game much more when we switch back and forth.

ps3 is going through what ps1 went through.  almost as if the past is the present into future.  nintendo and genesis were battling it out while i was still in high school while playstation sat quiet and waited.  waited to take over the world.

playstation gurus now got greedy and were sure they would win again, but people changed and playstation said a big screw you to the customer with the original ps3 price tag, and wii took everyone by storm.  now ps3 is gaining the most ground in consoles.  metal gear solid 4 will go down as the best game ever made, i'm sure.  and when bioshock comes over and then ff13 is rolled out, and then finally the xbox360 fades into the--everybody has online multiplay now--sunset (video game magazines barely cover the the xbox system anymore), playstation will once again rule.

hell, super fanboys are already saying that the mario creator's invention of the wii fit is spelling the downfall of videogames in this country, like it is doing in japan.

ffxi was indeed a stinker (rouge galaxy was a better game), but xii was back on track.  i see the next evolution of the series to be the final integration of a living epic, graphic fictional novel.  you may be correct about it all, though.  when one even says the final fantasy name anymore, it almost seems like "yawn, next."  overexposure finally?  like the last few seasons of the cosby show when the brat raven come on.

Why?

The people buying wii fit aren't your typical video game buyer. They are looking for something that provides a casual entertainment experience vs spending hours playing the latest First Person Shooter or Grand Theft Auto.

As it while Wii HW sales are soaring Wii SW sales are lagging because many of those buying Wiis stick to only playing Wii Sports included with the console.  The video game industry needs to figure out how to create games which appeal to the casual  player.

My wife and I received a Wii and Rock Band [pre order] as wedding gifts a few weeks ago.  It's true the Wii version of Rock Band isn't as good as XBox because of the lack of downloadable content/creation of characters/etc., but it's still the same basic game and we have a lot of fun playing it.  Would rather have the XBox version, but only have a Wii, so it suffices.

Boom Blox is just ok... to me at least.

Has anyone played Wario Ware: Smooth Moves?  Looks like it could be a fun multiplayer game.

i was super geeked about rock band on the wii, but in the end realized that i just don't have the friends interested in coming over and jammin' out on it. definitely did not need another guitar controller laying around and have zero interest in the singing part.  so the announcement of the new guitar hero drums was timely and i may buy into that instead.

Is anyone using their PS3 to primarily watch Blu-Ray movies?  I was considering getting a Blu-ray player in the near future but it would appear that the PS3 is the best bet going at the moment.  Also, is worth spending the extra money for PS2 compatibility.

I should of course hold off on Blu-ray until Lord of the Rings arrives, maybe by then the price of players will have come down a bit.

i have both a 360 and PS3 (and wii).  I pretty much only use the PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies.  I use the 360 to play games...and the Wii has become a paper weight.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 will only send bitstream of new hi res audio codecs, so if your reciever can not internally decode the formats you can't take advantage of them  In the case that you're reciever can't decode you'll need a player with 5.1 analog outs.

If audio is important to you (and believe me if it is you'll love the new codecs when done well they sound amazing)and your reciever can't do this i'd pass on the PS3 as a BR player.  That aside, it is by all accounts a really good player for the $$, esp. considering it doubles as a gaming console.

I wouldn't buy a blu-ray player at all, but that's a topic for a different thread.

I should of course hold off on Blu-ray until Lord of the Rings arrives, maybe by then the price of players will have come down a bit.

I was trying to figure out exactly what the analog outputs on the PS3 were

My receiver is older than dirty and at the moment I'm only using center+left+right with no subwoofer.  I believe it does support 5.1 analog, guess I'd better check that.
It's gonna be awhile before I'm able to update the receiver, put new speakers in place, etc.  Picture quality is more important to Kosmette, as is not having speaker wires running all over the place.  The room with the TV isn't exactly large so trying to size sound for it is going to take some work as well as planning seeing that all the walls are concrete.

Got the go ahead to get a PS3 from kosmette and need to jump on the opportunity quickly...

Trying to decide whether or not it's worth while getting the models with PS2 support.

Are there any really compelling PS2 games that are worth picking up to play on a PS3?

Hard to say. I will say that Gods of War I and II were superior games. And while I didn't play it a great deal, Shadow of the Colossus was an amazing game.

I've spent months debating whether to get the PS3 or X360, and I never did come to a conclusion. The X360 has the games, but it also has the dread 3 Red Rings of Death. The PS3 has the blu-ray and the reliability, but so far the games have been meager, and the quality exclusives almost nil.

if you have to ask whether or not there are any good games on ps2, then you are not allowed to buy a ps3.  stick with shite like xbox360 so you can play online multiplayer halo 5000 with two year olds.

I'm not denying that aren't any good games for the PS2, just curious as whether there are enough to justify getting the 80GB PS3 with emulation or not.

I had figured the prices of used PS2 games had dropped enough so that bargains could be had.  But after checking the used prices at Gamestop  of Metacritic's top rated games, it would appear the bottom hasn't dropped out yet as most used titles games run between $10 and $20.

Am interested in the GTA series, but could easily get that for a PC if I wanted to play the older titles.

I don't buy that many games and am more than willing to wait for a game worth buying to come out.

Am also not that interested in online play...

i may be wrong, but i was under the impression, like what nintendo did with wii, that ps3 was going to offer "home", where eventually you could download almost every fricking ps2 game made.  it was the smartest thing nintendo has ever done.  besides hand ps3 its ass on a platter.

now if apple would only pull their head out of content delivery asses and delivery a mini mac with a blu-ray player instead of another crapple tv product.

the last time i considered going the gaming pc route, i got the impression that current hw is actually ahead of the curve and its going to be awhile until newer games will be pushing performance to the extreme.

Yep.  And for those that don't want to purcahse and Xbox 360, every DVR on the planet will be able to do this in a years time.  Some can already do it.

As long as the interface is seamless, you can use multiple storage devices (PC, server, external eSATA drive, your DVR's HDD, your game console's HDD) and not know the difference.

Just followed the live blogging of the Nintendo E3 presentation...

Highlights are the new 1:1 response Wiimote addon, think light saber swing.
A GTA title for the DS
Wii Sports Resort including a Frisbee game to play with a on screen dog
And Wii Music which will include a drum module that uses the Wiimote, Nunchuck and Wii fit board for drum pedals.  Sounds kinda cool actually and it's not a strict rhythm game like Rock Band.

it's also interesting to note that DS sales are now almost 50/50 ratio of male to female recipients

In defense fo those non-casual gamers, E3 is not the place to make announcements for the non-hardcore types.

You can do those announcements anytime (like, right before Xmas?), but E3 has evolved into a hardcore gamers conference.

It must have been painful for those folks to sit through MS exclusive announcements yesterday and then be told today that you're not in our plans.

here's what i learned by following the sony E3 presentation...

the ps3 is a product with a ten year life cycle
only now are the games going to show up

2008 is apparently the year of the ps3, but by my count very few actual products were announced for this year.  resistance 2 and DC Universe Online
lots of developers are still really excited about the ps3

forth coming stuff presented via the way of trailers  God of War III (spring 2009) and some sort of massive online battle  based on SOCOM with up to 256 playing at once.

new 80GB ps3 in september for the same price as the current 40GB version with no ps2 compatibility.

oh and sony wants to be apple with the online content rental and purchase. and some sort of exclusive automobile video content.  you know the whole we are so ready to be the next dominate set top box...

a couple of products still not here LittleBigPlanet and Home.  and they have taken a page from Nintendo's book and added weather and news info presented on a globe as a service on the  PS3.

You can do those announcements anytime (like, right before Xmas?), but E3 has evolved into a hardcore gamers conference.

It must have been painful for those folks to sit through MS exclusive announcements yesterday and then be told today that you're not in our plans.
ok i admit in not being familiar with what the E3 conference is all about... but given that it's widely known that lots of wii buyers are sticking to only playing wii sports a whole of bunch of retailers went CHA-CHING with the announcement.

plus given nintendo's record with delayed game releases, i'll bet they rather not announce something until it's ready to be unleashed on the masses and not create disappointment.  but hopefully someone is busying themselves with zelda..

Before Quickie 'n the Bushes experiences one of those epic Simon and Garfunkle type break up's tonight, I thought I'd open it up to the group to pick which Who song we play first tonight.  Venerable has been unabashadly lobbying for "Eminence Front" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3oij16YGDs) all week, which I happen to think is one of the more retarded Who songs out there (cleary a Townsend solo song - might as well have been the B-side to Let My Love Open the Door).

I don't think we can open with Baba O'Reilly, so I'm thinking the live version of My Generation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq0pR5XlpCM&feature=related), slow it down with Behind Blue Eyes, then Who are You before we tear into Baba O'Reilly.

And just maybe if we still have time we play Eminence Front for anybody who's not already in the parking lot - you know those 70's holdovers...

 Thoughts?

i can't wait until nintendo releases a wii whore expansion kit that i can stick my weiner in.  just casual sex, nothing serious. [/b]
actually i think this would help loosen up some of those pent up gamers and they wont care when the new zelda gets released...

come on. . course eminence front is wicked 'tarded. . .but. . .it's so 80s.  i can see crockett walking on the beach with the girl in the distance waiting for him under a setting miami sun.  the camera cuts to tubbs in an apartment looking forlorn when a girl comes behind him and hands him a michelob before sitting on his lap.

part of what i find ironic is that the "hardcore" Nintendo gamers who were once seen as casual gamers are now miffed an even more casual set of gamers is getting the attention.  we've all grown up and acting like ps2 and xbox fanboys...

and the sony bs detector really goes off when they declare 2008 as the year of the ps3 and then announce the release of 130 new titles for the ps2...

I remember that scene, but I'm pretty sure it was a Phil Collins song in the back ground.

Sony really must be run by a bunch of idiots... It's being conjectured that come September the new 80GB PS3 will be the only one on the market and it will not have any backwards compatibility to the PS2.

So they went from having a PS3 model with PS2 HW built in for compatibility, to a PS3 model with PS2 compatibility provided via software emulation which doesn't support all the titles on the market.  And after this they expect PS2 owners to still upgrade... I'm willing to bet the  value of a used first generation PS3 just went up.

They really ought to just call it a DVDstation and be done with it...

Wii Fit tells 10 year old she's fat (http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26390271)

...The stepfather of the girl, who didn't want to be named for her sake, said, "She is a perfectly healthy, 4-feet-9-inch-tall 10-year-old who swims, dances, and weighs only six stone. She is solidly built but not fat. She was devastated to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her she isn't."

 ------

The proper answer is she's not fat, BMI just doesn't take into acount that awkward 6X size in little girls, which I thought was just an American thing.

my wii fit age is 22 too, which also surprised me.

Only if you're skinny, have a nice tan and wear Benneton's white collection for our first date.

If you bring a Veuve Clicquot Traveller Bag and a copy of Ice Princess on DVD we can make an afternoon of it.

If things go REALLY well, maybe even into the night with some re-runs of Lonelygirl15 and The Secret Lif of the American Teenager over some Rickstacy's.

the real challenge/problem with wii fit is  . . . try to keep at it for more than four months.  working out this way is dedication!  and it calls you fat to keep you wanting to continue, as so not to waste the product, then blame nintendo for overpriced garbage.

question for the fans of first person shooters.  i never got into the genre, never saw the interest in the days of doom and quake, or the latter times of halo/half life/medal of honour/etc....  just played my real first "sort of fps" in a resident evil game and LOVED IT.  what are the best fps game(s) of the past that i can hone my skills, so that i too can kill like i'm really doing it but not go hell as baby jesus watches?

Call of Duty 4
 BioShock
 Half Life 2
 Team Fortress 2
 Crysis

those are probably the top 5 of the past year or so

also, more shameless plugging of the game I'm working on - G4 covered it the other night:
