Title: 930 Survival Football 2013
Post by: ggw on September 04, 2013, 01:41:20 am
I will take over from vansmack.  Most of you know the drill, but the details are below if you need a reminder.

_______________________________________________________________________

You have been invited to join ggw's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.

In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football, and click the "Join a Group" button. From there, enter the following information...

Group ID#: 27223
 Password: ninethirty

Direct Link: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival/group/27223

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one.  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, ggw*) on the yahoo site.

Let me know of any questions and good luck!

Btw - The deadline for joining (and making weekly picks) is Sunday at 1:00pm.  So unless you are picking the Thursday night game, you have until Sunday to join.

LONG LIVE GGW!

i believe we need a password to join the league.  that direct link you provided is the pool home page - which is accessible only after we join.  clicking it now yields a "You are not a member of this group. (Error #113)" message.

to join, i'm pretty sure we need to go to http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival/register/joingroup, and enter the league # (27223?) and the league's password.

Me.  I figure that if the law of averages is true, I am due for a win this season.

If anyone wonders what Seth is talking about, there is a secret cabal that does a $1000 option on the pool.  As added incentive, the payout is settled in-person over lunch.  So don't look at it as wagering $1000; look at it as a guaranteed Lunch with Seth.

1 strike and you are eliminated.

I don't think Yahoo will move Brian to the "Eliminated Players" section until all the games are over.

23 players @ $5; 8 @ $100; 3 high rollers @ $1,000.

~36 hours to go.  Tell your friends.

Hoya and Sweetcell - I know you can step up to the adult table with Dr. Phibes, Seth, and me.  You guys aren't scared, are you?

19 out of 25 still in for week 2 isn't bad...... 2 years ago in a small survivor pool I ran, there were 2 huge upsets in the "gimme" games in the first 2 weeks that meant almost everyone was out and the whole league only lasted 4 weeks...... not much surviving going on that year.....

I think when you have a society that sends out the message that its OK for adults to play video games or fantasy football, you shouldn't be shocked when 95% of our population are morons. Back in the old days, kids who played D&D or Frogger all day got the crap beat out of them at school and that negative reinforcement of those behaviors STOPPED THEM from doing them and moving on to age-appropriate, productive activities like perfecting their craft cocktail skills and cataloging classical music performances.

I blame fantasy football for a lot of things. You're playing goddamn Dungeons and Dragons and you all are ostensibly adults. If you talk to someone who plays fantasy sports, you're talking to a complete loser.
Lol. I think fantasy sports are just about as nerdy as oh....a top 10 albums of the year list, or something like that. Just a hobby for people. But, I like both of those things. Patton Oswalt wrote an awesome article on being a nerd and how being a nerd is just out in the open now. I think this is the type of thing you're getting after.

Seven remaining:

Four in the $100 pool:
ggw
hoyaparanoia
Ljack666
We Are Both Carls

Three others in the $5 pool:
Challenged
J Rho
Yada Sacker

Go me!

Everybody advanced.  3 picked DEN; 3 picked KC; Yada picked Chicago because he figured out that my beloved Giants are basically the NFC version of the Jaguars this season.

Hoya, J Rho, and L Jack took San Fran.  Challenged took New England.  Yada took the 'Pack. The Carls took KC.  I took New Orleans.  This year is going longer than most.

I'm trying to remember...back in 2009 maybe, the pool lasted until Thanksgiving or thereabouts, and the handful of people left all lost in the same week.  Might be that kind of year again.

that seems kinda ridiculous to be declared the winner when your game hasn't been played, but I guess technically, he was the last man standing, no matter what.... hopefully Miami wins just to remove any possible "taint".....we had an interesting ending to my other survival league as well..... I set up a league every year for a small group of friends just for fun, and after a season a couple years ago where everyone was out by week 4 because of a rash of upsets early on, I made it a 2 strike league to keep it going longer...... anyway, of all the people left this year, one guy was still perfect, everyone else had one strike, and like what happened in this league, all those people lost this weekend..... the guy who was perfect didn't make a pick this week, I think he's out camping and just forgot..... anyway, we all figured that was just his first strike and that he won, but apparently Yahoo doesn't see it that way....  apparently because he didn't make a pick, Yahoo eliminated him and thus, according the league page, we ended without an "official" champion this season....

I was the last one last year, but my game was on a Monday night. How funny that both years I was eliminated by picking the Steelers. I still have the little trophy thing on my Yahoo account though.

ok kids, it's on:

930 Survivor Pool 2014 - how to join:

go to http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival/register/joingroup

Group ID#: 29465
Password: ninethirty

we're starting the pool in week two of the season, so you have until Sunday (9/13) at 1 pm EDT to join (or join before Thursday's kickoff if you want to pick a winner from that game).

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week two of the NFL season or prior to the Thursday game if you pick that game (AKA the pool's first week).  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (example: SweetPix*).

Pay via PayPal, details on the Yahoo site. Let me know of any questions and good luck!

If it's connected to your account, you don't have to "transfer" funds. You can just send the money and it will pull the $$$ automatically.

I've been to Vegas twice since my promotion and my hand twitches the whole time.  I actually turned down a trip last month because I would be alone for most of it (everyone else at a conference) and didn't think I could do it.

No $5 pools, no fantasy sports - really no sports anything.  Smackie without spreadsheets figuring out how to gain .05 in WHIP?  It's a good thing I love what I do...

only one survivor pool participant hasn't paid up yet... i'm assuming it won't be a problem for them to do so in the coming days.  thanks!

Phibes Factor 5 ** PHI
SweetPix* GNB
WeAreBothCarls* NOR

all pretty easy picks.  i feel that starting next week things are going to get interesting pretty quickly...

Oh wow!  This softens the blow of my annual loss to Booker T-Bars in League930.

The CIN/CAR tie is a crazy way to go out.  I wasn't 100% sure how that was going to be treated in the Survival Pool.

As a relatively unbiased non-pool participant, I absolutely think a tie should kick you out and have sent a multi-page letter to the NCAA before highlighting the absurdity of them computing "winning percentage" with ties counted as some nebulous half-win. It's a passion issue of mine.

we could start in week 2 or 3 of the season, since it's probably too late to get this ship sailed in time for the season opener in 3 days.

You pick a team you think will win that week. If they win, you move on to the next week. If they lose/tie, you are out. Cannot pick the same team twice in one season.

yeah, so am i, but i'm not sure how many others are.  more fun, and more money, if we get a bigger group together... options for smack-talk are much better ;D

how does it work

it sounds simple enough, but its surprising how quickly you run out of "sure winners" and/or those sure-winners fail to live up to expectations.  we rarely make it past week 8.

there are three pools: $5, $100 and $1000.  you must participate in the $5 pool, the others are optional.  whoever survives the longest in each pool gets that pool's pot.

anyone going to step up to seth's 1K challenge???  if you need additional incentive, traditionally the $1000 pool was settled up over lunch (winner pays).  so here's your chance to shmooze with seth, ask him for balcony access, question his selection of beers, etc etc etc... and take his money!

in case there any casual observers who don't know what we're going on about: 5 of the 6 most popular picks lost yesterday.  that means 87% of players are out, with the chance of hitting 92% if Indy loses tonight.

87%... that's not a slaughter, that's mass extinction.

^ yeah, if Indy loses, the top 6 will have lost.... not so coincidentally, since they were all playing the top 4, the bottom 4 (in terms of  pct. picked) all won.....  if Indy loses tonight and we're ALL out, should we call it a mulligan and start again this week?

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. the decision must be made prior to the start of the league, AKA week 1, aka Sunday 9/08 at 1 p.m. (or before thursday's DEN/CAR game if you pick a winner from that matchup).  to signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (example: SweetPix*).

Might do this again.

participation has picked up: we're up to 8 playaz, with 4 in for the $100 bonus pool.  let's keep the upward trend going.  the more the merrier!

among the recent additions: seth... and GGW!  welcome back, brah.  are you high rollers going to wager a Cleveland (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/1000_dollar_bill-1995-.jpg)?

just added paypal instructions.  please pay up ASAP.

Winner takes a Cleveland Steamer to all the losers is the ultimate wager.

apologies, i didn't realize we had an audience!

nothing exciting to report this week: everyone is still alive.  to be more precise, everyone just barely scraped by: SEA x 6, KAN x 2, GNB x 2.  i picked the seabirds, and following the score on my phone took a few years off my life expectancy.

thanks to two last-minute additions, including a non-boardie friend of mine, we're up to 10 playaz with 5 throwing down a benjamin.

week 3 recap: there was blood

we have our first victims.  kubacheck falls due to his misplaced confidence in arizona, while yada bit the big one thank to cam newton's impotence against the vike's D.

everyone else coasted on the coattails of MIA, GNB or SEA.

on to week 4... for most of us.

Picking the Redskins and being a Redskins fan was super hard. Could only catch the 2nd half, our defense is really, really bad. They came up big when we needed them, but it seemed as if the Browns were begging us to win that game. Surprised to see so many people pick them lol.

week 4 recap: the crowd thins out

another week, another round of carnage thanks to the they-really-are-better-than-that Cardinals.

an interesting wrinkle is that both GGW and seth picked ARI, so they're both out.  that leaves no winner of the $1,000 pool.  if you gents want to continue your 1K competition, you could email me your picks in advance of 1 pm on sundays.  lemme know.

that leaves only crevers and i in the $100 pool.  we're joined by DFA1979, jeffml and stonethecrow in the $5 pool.

week 5 recap: there was peace and harmony

we can't agree on what a perfect crowd size is, or whether or not katy perry's music has any artistic merit, but apprently we can all agree that Angry Brady was going to take care of the browns.  and he did, so no one eliminated this week.

Four picks for PIT over MIA, one pick for BUF over SF.  Sweetcell & me both picked PIT, so no winner-take-all for the $100 pool today.

For the record, I lingered over TEN over CLE for quite a while.  We'll see if I should have pulled that trigger.

week 6 recap: there was clarity... and confusion

sooooooo, how 'bout that Big Ben? laying -8 to Miami... pshaw!

congrats to Dr. Tobias Fünke, AKA jeffml, for having the wisdom to go with the Bills.  $50 coming your way for winning the $5 pool.

crevers and i will split the $100 pool, so $250 each (includes our dues, we clear $150).

until next year, enjoy the rest of the season!
