It's fully possible to appreciate Julian's America as a genuine cultural phenomenon. It's also fully possible to appreciate Julian's America as a metaphor for what it takes to become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Either way, for too long, Julian's America has registered as an anachronism, a nostalgic reminder of times long past when people only wore seersucker sincerely, never ironically. For too long, Julian's America has seemed to lay dormant like a vintage 1980's wide diagonal-striped Jean Paul Gaultier tie sitting in the back of a magnificently oak-lined closet awaiting the day it came back in style. No more.
For the past few years, I have heard from Julian Americans all around the actual America, western Europe, and the Maldives asking the same question: "where are you now, in a post-didn't elect Hillary world, when we need you most?" Allow me to answer in a short parable. One day a man is walking along a beach and has a vision of myself. He sees scenes of his life and two set of footprints in the sand, one he identifies as a pair of Prada docksiders and one as a pair of Bottega Veneta captoes. At the particularly troubling points, he notices only the footprints of his beloved Prada docksiders and he turns to me and asks, "Why is it at the lowest points of my life did you cease to walk with me?"
To which I answered: "The one set of footprints you see ... that is when I took off my Ferragamo's -- which you quite inaccurately identified as Bottega Venetas -- because I did not want the sand of the beach to wear away prematurely at the leather soles." Julian's America has always remained alive in the hearts and minds of all true Julian Americans everywhere. Its alive in the hearts of young children, hiding under their palatially arranged 1000 thread count sheets with a flashlight to sneak peaks at L'uomo Vogue and n+1. It was alive walking beside you all this time, telling you which way to go in its trademark still, small voice; it just did not want the sand of the beach to wear away prematurely at its shoes' leather soles. Its time again to rejoice and highlight the things that make life great, the things that make life worth living! It's time to leave the summer vacation of our collective discontent and enjoy the cool autumn breezes in Julian's America!

America's Cup 2013
The sporting event of the year came and went in shocking, near orgasmic fashion! The greatest testament to man's physical ability, mental acumen, and dominion over nature -- yachting -- played out in a 3+ week thunderstorm of precision racing off the shores of San Francisco's scenic bay. Truly the world's most byzantine sport, what better way to celebrate Julian's America than to revel in Actual America's unbelievable come from behind victory from 0 to -2 at the beginning of the regatta (and was 8-1 for the Kiwis at one point!) to win 9-8 in 19 races. Truly, to compare the 2004 Red Sox's flukey comeback against the New York Yankees to this stunning accomplishment would be like comparing the birth of Jesus Christ to a back-alley, prom-night dumpster abortion.
For the uninitiated, allow us a moment to break our traditional narrative format to highlight all the reasons yachting truly stands as the greatest metaphor for the Julian's American lifestyle:
- The combination of technology with the old-world luxury of yachting: Long ago, in a one-off Julian's Somalia article (http://forum.930.com/index.php?topic=18790.msg278922#msg278922), we highlighted the danger of yacht owners being lumped in with mere "boat" owners, and laid out the case for yacht owners to truly be a cut above. Well, America's Cup takes that foundation of multi-generational wealth and combines it with the elite advancements in modern technology. Indeed, the very definition of Julian's America.
- Inclusion: If there's anything America's Cup is about, it's inclusion. Why Team Oracle USA's is a sterling example; the crew is made up, not only of Americans, but of the best and brightest Britian, Australia, New Zealand, and France have to offer! What could be more inclusive than billionaires getting the absolute elite talent from around the world together for an enjoyable day getting some sun and fighting off their mutual pastiness. As always, Julian's America knows no national boundaries, and neither does America's Cup.
- The exposing of hypocrisy: Despite cries from uninformed masses that yachting is somehow elitist, we saw in this America's Cup the clear display that it is, in fact, poor (possibly migrant) workers CHOOSING to not participate in yachting's glory. America's Cup featured no less than 20 $100-plate cocktail parties around the festivities, which were poorly attended by the poor, DESPITE THE FACT they were open and available to anyone willing to pay the entry fee. No one was keeping them out but themselves! Additionally, we continue to see inner-city youths take up sailing at alarmingly low rates DESPITE THE FACT that several urban blighted areas such as Washington DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Southside Chicago, the four boroughs of NYC not named Manhattan, Philadelphia, et al existing on coastlines with an abundance of water nearby for sailing. Melville would be rolling in his grave at the thought of such exorbitant landlessness going unused!
- The affirmation of judging people by wealth: If America's Cup proved anything in 2013, its that wealth natural finds the most-deserving of our society. Many dream of one day being wealthy and doing selfish things like buying homes for their parents or putting their ragamuffin children through some vocational school in the south. Larry Ellison sat on his private island in Hawaii and thought about how he could use his Oracle fortune to give back and win the Auld Mug for all the people of his homeland. Charity is more than just a girls name in Julian's America!
- The confirmation of the spoils system: An oft overlooked fact is that the winner of the America's Cup gets to decide the venue, rules, and boat specifications for the next America's Cup, much as the winners in fields of politics, industry, and eugenics set the laws for their nations. Our truest aristocrat, Larry Ellison: can we start planning on America's Cup - The Maldives for 2016?? Here's hoping!
So, gentle readers, its time to look back and bask in the joy that is the most thrilling America's Cup in recent memory! So long ago seem the days when rogue hooligans would damage the beloved Cup in protest, rather, we woke this morning to children in Atlanta and Detroit and your local country club celebrating one of the brightest days in American history and dreaming of one day accomplishing so much themselves, if not in yachting, then at least in dressage, polo, or even lacrosse. The crew was not made up of "Americans" but four Australians, two Kiwis, and one sailor each from the United States, Britain, Italy, Holland and Antigua. I think you missed your opportunity here to write about the real Julian's America Billionaires outsourcing to win.
And the vast majority of San Francisco is very happy to see it go. The short term leases signed by the teams and fans of the "sport" are the main reason SF has now passed NYC as the nations least affordable place to live. The rebalancing will be a joy to watch shake out. If you're too snooty to garner even the slightest bit of attention from a group of Americans that love the smell of their own farts, have you really made a mark?

So I was reading Savage Love last week, and I was sort of wondering if this letter was from Julian.
I'm a 23-year-old homo who came out one year ago. Life has done good and bad things to me. Good things include success in the intelligence lottery, a full ride to college, and now a job with a six-figure income. Sadly, I find that my place in life is different from the place occupied by most other young gay men. When meeting someone, I am often bummed to discover that they are in a state of transience (between cities, between degrees), or bummed because I detect a difference in socioeconomic upbringing/status that will make it hard for us to relate to each other, or bummed because they are not as smart as I am, or most often bummed over a combination of all these things. These thoughts sap my interest in new people, telling me that "it just wouldn't work." Am I right to think that and keep looking, or should I do some substantial "rounding up to one" and go on that second date, even though the odds of compatibility seem slim?
Lots Of First Dates
I'm tempted to tell you not to go on "that second date" with anyone you feel is beneath you intellectually, socioeconomically, or status- or upbringing-wise?not to spare you his ghastly company, LOFD, but to spare him the ghastliness of yours.
Look, Gloria Upson, if dating gay men your own age means exposing yourself to guys who are in "states of transience"?completely normal states for dudes in their early 20s?then date guys in their 30s and 40s. Not that dating older guys is a surefire recipe for romantic success: Your snobbery, classism, and elitism are so repulsive that most older guys will be blocking your number before you can call about a second date.
Andrew Sullivan wrote a beautiful post at The Dish a few weeks ago about the egalitarianism of getting laid. He recalled dancing all night in a gay club full of African American guys back when he was a "cute twinky English schoolboy." And Andrew didn't just dance with the black guys he encountered after moving to Washington, DC.
"There's nothing like dating or fucking a person of another background, race, or class to help you see the humanity in everyone," Andrew wrote. "How do you get scared of generic young black men when you've danced with them all night long?... In that sense, I've always felt that being gay was a real moral blessing. I could have been so much worse a human being if I'd been straight."
You're young, LOFD, and I'm being hard on you. I don't mean to step on your ping-pong ball. But if you don't get a grip on your classism and snobbery, you will become so much worse a human being than you need to be. So snap the fuck out of it, okay? And remember: We gay people are a tiny, tiny minority. If you reject as potential partners, friends, and fuck buddies all gay men who aren't of your exact same class, education level, social status (ugh), or salary level (barf), LOFD, you won't be left with many guys to date, hang out with, or fuck.
Which is not to say that you'll wind up alone. Refusing to date any gay man who doesn't belong to the same club that Bunny Bixler does (and isn't pulling in 100K+ a year) will complicate your search for love, LOFD, but there are other gay snobs out there. You could find a boyfriend who's just like you, i.e., same class, same education, same income bracket, same snobbery and shitty-ass attitude. But I wouldn't wish that kind of guy on anyone, LOFD.
Not even on you.

It is little consolation now, but one day I will discuss that game with another Michigan fan, and it will be a source of perverse pride that I did the entire day leading up to the game, the game itself, and three hours afterwards completely sober. So we have one "homeless" woman in our neighborhood. She is "homeless", but always weather-appropriately dressed. With an umbrella. With winter gear, With summer gear. With seemingly different clean clothes every time we see her. Sometimes with nicer clothes than I'm wearing.
We see her with her little "homeless please help" sign near the vehicle exit next to Whole Foods at our local stripmall. She's there only when the weather is not too warm or not too cold.
One time I saw her in Giant and she had a grocery cart full of paid for groceries, enough to feed multiple people. She was telling the woman she was with that "they better not say such and such to my son".
My daughter goes to a summer camp that makes use of a neighborhood pool that's part of a townhouse community (I think). I'm pretty sure you'd either have to be a paying community pool member or a townhouse community member to use the pool...anyway...my daughter saw the "homeless" woman hanging out at the pool.
There is no point to this story, I just thought I'd share.

Crier is so underrated. Yes, I suppose the nouveau riche can have the Butler announce guests but you really want that booming, regal voice announcing your guests when they enter the parlor. A trianed voice guy - a Goulet or Buffer - really adds to the ambiance.

It is, ostensibly, a preview of Michigan's 2016 football team but it is, in actuality, 90% about the experience of growing up across the border from Canada and the Tragically Hip. I brought our trash cans back up to the house this morning right after the trash trucks came by, so I know that they were empty when I left for work. When I came home tonight, though, there was a bag of dog poop in one of our cans. It's especially frustrating that someone would do this right after the weekly trash pick-up and on a day when it is 90 degrees outside. Plus, this person clearly walked all the way up to the top of our driveway, which is on a steep hill, to get to our trash can since it wasn't even on the street. I realize that most of you are considerate neighbors, so I'm sorry to send this to the entire list serve. But I don't know who the culprit is and I'm not sure how else to get this message across since this isn't the first (or even second) time this has happened.

Gentlemen, it's bad enough that we're seeking female companionship on what amounts to the clearance sale rack of the online dating realm.
Single women in the Craigslist personals who are between 25&45 years old and not fat (not slender or athletic - just NOT fat) need to be put on the endangered species list.
It's a crisis of epic proportions.
The pandemic of fat women on Craigslist (and North America on a whole) has thrown the dating ecosystem severely out of balance.
As it stands, men are competing so fiercely for non-fat women that even women with unsightly physiognomy -but a non-fat body- are trophies.
Fat women on Craigslist looking to land an alpha male have never had more of an incentive to lose weight than right now.
A healthy dating ecosystem needs a relative balance of fat women, non-fat women, alpha males, beta males, and losers (yes -losers, because losers prevent women from taking beta males for granted) to keep the dating market in check.
A preponderance of fat women leads to said women -in the aggregate- trying to procure men that are beyond their market value, because they know most men will have few to no options.
To wit; the plethora of adipose women on Craigslist who list tall, handsome, FIT (the unmitigated gall!) and established as a requisite to contacting them.
If these pachyderms applied their delusion offline, they would be summarily laughed off the face of the planet.
Conversely, a dearth of non-fat women leads to said women virtually all trying to land an alpha male, because they know that as a limited-supply high-demand demographic, they can market themselves at a premium - irrespective of physiognomy.
To wit; the absence of non-fat women on the Craigslist personals - with the exception of escorts, who descend en masse due to the very large, and thus very lucrative makrket of men who are absolutely starving for non-fat women.

Conversely, the biggest losers in this imbalanced ecosystem are.....well, losers; because in a healthy dating market, losers have no choice but fatties.

I recently discovered that my credit card's reward program allows you to trade points for concert tickets. There's a disclaimer that you're "purchasing" tickets with points through a reseller, and are "paying" more points than actual face value. Most of the listed shows are not sold out, and I could pay actual face value money (plus fees) for actual tickets. Is it better to trade virtual money for actual tickets that essentially cost me nothing but virtually cost me more than I would or should have to pay, or do I pay actual money (plus fees) and save my virtual points for I have no idea whatever else you can get for points?

The answer to your question is dependent on what else you can use your points on and does it have a similar "markup" on other rewards purchases or solely on tickets.
That said, I fail to understand how CC reward points fall under the Julian's America purview as we would simply call our personal spending concierge that comes with our AmEx Blacks and get them to explain this to us.

I could only convince him to put in a sell order at 19.5 for 75% for when the market opens. He wants to see if it goes higher on the other 25%.
I think his ego was a little hurt when I explained they were targeting shorted companies that experts advised against buying but I’m sure the $20k he stands to clear pre-tax will soothe what ills.

can be quite a different sum
But retired income could be fairly low income tax rate, so I didn’t take that into account

Complete idiot luck. He is semi-retired (he retired but was bored so went back to agronomic sales) and retail invests on the side. He has a tendency to invest in outdated technologies. Like he's has a ton of Ford stock because he's sure American automotive is "coming back around." He bought in AMC because it was cratered because of the pandemic and (1) "no one wants to watch a new release on a TV at home" [side note: he personally has not stepped foot in a theatre in 15 years] and (2) "movie theatres will always exist because people need places to go on dates." He basically just effs around with like $150k of his retirement savings to have something to do.
He just got lucky. As I said, I had to explain to him why the stock was targeted for this kind of activity.

Nah. I got him back on the horn this morning and he was able to get out at like 11.5. Which is still pretty fair profit for buying at 2.45 or something 10 days ago.
Just checked and looks like Robinhood has removed GME and AMC from it's app?!
This news is what prompted me to call him back and tell him to sell all the shares immediately for whatever he could get, that the bubble was bursting. He listened thankfully.

when i moved to the PNW, i quickly learned that Subarus are the expected, default brand of vehicle. it's as if they should issue every new arrival an Outback just to ensure social cohesion - if you don't have one, do you really even live here? subaru dealers compete with each other by advertizing how short their waiting lists are. on the upside, they hold their resale value extremely well thanks to demand.
some to think of it, a very large portion of the population here is lesbian and/or a gentrifier so i guess this checks out.

I opined on FB that is was a literally crime against tourism that there was no public sculptature of Taylor for the Swifties to flock to. No sight-seeing buses showing us the where she went to middle school or what dead-end street the car was parked on the first time she got fingerblasted in the back seat or anything like that. They've done literally nothing to monetize their native daughter's fame.

i don't know enough about the wine review scene to know if it'll be a scandal or not, but 100% certain that this will happen. might already have. real estate agents are using ChatGPT to write house listings ("look at the images and describe the house using terms from and in the style of other listings"). kids are using it to write their essays: "give me a 1,000 word essay on the causes of the American Civil War, written in the style of an 10th grade student" - and boom, your weekend is free to goof off. i'm in a FB group dedicated to brewing sour beer, and one of the nerds asked two relatively complex questions and the answers were quite decent. there was one flagrant mistake (brettanomyces is a yeast not a bacteria, duh!!!) but otherwise they were completely in line with what you'd expect to read in this community of experts. had the OP not noted that the replied were from an AI, i'm sure no one would have noticed (other than being razzed for making a newbie error about brett)
