I feel bad for the tourists.  Totally nonsensical to shut down the government when you know you are paying the employees anyway.  Someone plans a trip to DC and can't see any of the sights?  Anyway:

Yeah, I wasn't going to get into the whole thing about how DREAMers are NOT illegal, but there's that detail. This shutdown isn't just about DACA. It's about frustration with the process and way that things are dealt with. Sometimes you have to try to use leverage in the instances you are able to. There's no compromises being made right now. Oh, and a bunch of Republicans are on board with reauthorizing DACA, plus not all Republicans are voting to keep the government open. So it ain't all about Democrats, who don't control Congress or the WH.

I've got nothing to offer except a complaint.  I was recently invited on a last minute trip to the Bahamas by a lady friend and dug out my passport to find that it is expired.  I started the expedited renewal process on Friday right before the shutdown.  Having a hard time figuring out exactly how much passport requests are affected by the all this.  I really don't want to eat these plane tickets.  And I could really use a few days in the sun.  Fuck this government.

Yeah, pretty sure that passports aren't affected since you have to pay for them...maybe they're short-staffed though.

This is definitely what I am reading some places.  But in others I've read that passport agencies located in federal buildings will be closed.  Who the fuck knows.  I think my chances are pretty good of getting it done.  But being in just a little limbo over it sucks.

I stand by my original statement - fuck this government.

For more information about passports, see the State Department’s website. As of late Sunday night, there had been no change in passport processing times, still listed as four to six weeks, according to state’s website. (It’s on the lower right corner of the page.)

Did you already do it?  If not, try the USPS for expedited service. They are not affected by the shutdown.

they're playing the long game.  where do you think most new voters come from?  it ain't births.  and guess who immigrants tend to vote for... plus, it's an issue their (current) base is either supportive of or at a minimum indifferent about, on the whole.

Look they came in the country illegally...I think we need way more immigration and I am pro amnesty for everyone but the only way to accomplish that is to win elections and Democrats need to stop being the party of illegal immigrants and Muslims or they will lose the midterms and trump will be re-elected in 2020

You summed up why this issue isn't polling well in marginal districts and why people don't give a crap about someone who came into the country as a minor (probably not even by their own choice) and now wants to try to stay here. I don't think people realize how HARD it is now for someone who is seeking asylum in this country to stay here. Imagine you're a North Korean refugee and you want to stay here because you have a relative in this country. You know you what you need? A birth certificate. BUT North Koreans are never ISSUED birth certificates. So what do you need? A lawyer to help your argument to stay. The system is changing and making it harder for anyone who wants to become a US citizen.  And as the son of immigrants, I feel pretty disgusted when people don't have an ounce of common sense that they are lucky and privileged to be Americans but clearly don't have a shred of empathy just because they're a generation or 3 removed from the issue. The shutdown should not have happened. Over any issue. And it's ugly that what has surfaced is a "not for THESE people" sentiment. It stems right from the "shithole countries" comment.

We need a system like Canada, where immigration is based on merit and not on whether you are lucky enough to have a relative in the country.
