Title: META: User-curated Hall of Fame
Post by: Julian, Forum COGNOSCENTI on December 19, 2013, 11:12:07 am
I feel the time has come to institute some sort of user-curated 930.com Forum Hall of Fame. How does everyone think this should go? Do we simply induct members as Hall of Famers or do we attempt to induct classic threads or incidents in 930.com history? Some combination of both?

Any nominations? When we put together the list of nominees, does everyone get a vote or only people with post counts above a certain number? Simple majority or some sort of higher threshold?

Thoughts?

I can imagine myself walking in the sunset, holding hands and smiling. Hearing the crash of the waves as a gentle breeze flows through my body and hair. Walking miles and miles, while the moon rises high into the sky. The whole world is asleep, but I am the only one living a dream. The graceful peace, settling into my heart. For once I actually feel alive.

This is what it should feel like. This is how you're supposed to live. A longing sense of comfort. And as we lay on the sand staring into the night sky, the stars become brighter and multiply. Soon enough, the dark sky is brightened by each star's shine. We close our eyes, hand in hand and lie in a moment of silence when all we can hear in the background is the calm waves alining upon the shore and the light night breeze. We make a wish and lie together in a few more moments, appreciating eachother for everything we are. We then both open our eyes to the diamond-like sky, staring for a brief moment as we then both turn to eachother, lying on our sides. I am looking into your eyes and you are looking into mine. I look at every inch of your body, then interlocking my eyes into yours once again. I inhale as you take a deep breath.

I then begin to speak in a soft whisper. I tell you this is everything. You are all I've wanted. You were in all my dreams. You love me the way I wanted. You care for me like no one else has. I appreciate everything you've ever done for me, everything you've spent on me, everything you've said to me and everything you've felt for me. You are the only one I want. I am in love with you. Please keep me forever. Locked away in the eternity of time. You are different. You give me ideas.

Thoughts, feelings, unlived visions of places I've never been or never knew existed, walking beside you in every one. It may be simple to state how I feel about you and say I love you a thousand times, but it is all too complex to fully give you the understanding of the meaning of the immense amount of love and appreciation I have for you. I tell you you're the one. You're everything anyone could ever ask for. I am thankful to have you in my life. I love you. I then pause and look into your eyes. You don't say anything. You can see the moon reflecting onto the calm ocean. A warm chilling feeling flows throughout my body as I watch you begin to slowly close your eyes and bring your body closer to me. Your face inching towards mine. As I close my eyes, I take one deep breath, tasting the chilled ocean air. I slowly bring myself closer to you, as you put your arms around me.

I can feel your body heat and your soft hands touching my body. Our lips then touch. We kiss. Passionate, gentle, everlasting. This one kiss expresses all my thoughts, feelings, emotions and every little detail of every little existing idea, dream, form of all the words and feelings that I've developed for you. That moment, it was all unveiled. We lied there for minutes, sharing this dream we both created together. As we slowly move our faces away, I lay my head upon your shoulder and your arms around my body. The night had never seemed so bright and beautiful up until this day. It's like the world turned and everything completely changed. Everything was clear and I can actually breathe and feel each beat of my heart pound against my chest, as the blood slowly flows through my body. I can feel, hear, touch, taste, see, smell and understand everything, in what now feels like what is heaven. Lifelessly floating on a cloud, feeling fully alive. The feeling of being so unrealistically content and that a perfect life and person can exist is far beyond anything I could have ever perceived.

You are my savior and meaning for existance. I thank you for everything you will do and being there, always. We lie, staring into the sky feeling the air get colder as the night becomes later. It doesn't bother me though. My body is filled with a warming sense of completion. Everything I'd dreamed of having is fulfilled, finally. I close my eyes and daydream once again of having and sharing this same exact moment with you. Soon enough the stars slowly fade away as the sky becomes lighter and the light of the sun pierces through the sky, slowly rising as time repeats itself once again. But this time is new. The feeling of being reborn into a life that you feel you've lived every single day. It feels so right. Life is beautiful with you. I appreciate things much more thoroughly. I love you. I always will.

I can't participate in such an endeavor until I know who is more attractive than I am so a reveal thread is a must although I can't imagine I'd post in it so here we are back at square one.

Good idea. Lets do both. Boardie of the Year is like a season MVP whereas the HoF is more of a lifetime achievement award.

So who would pay for that?  I think whomever lists the most new relevant shows should be the boarder of the year.  That or most cat photos.

That or most cat photos.
So that's a nomination for Walkie.

First things first: do we only induct PEOPLE or do we have one wing of our HoF for PEOPLE and one for THREADS/INCIDENTS.

What are the most legendary threads in 930.com history?

Is there a douchebag of the year award?

i thought he got banned before?
Thatguy could not stand me. He told me I could come back "over his dead body." I returned the day he died.

I'm not trying to be flippant or make fun of anyone's death. He really said that. I felt weird about it.

well we should probably try to start with a boardie of the year and next year add another category i should think...but its open to discussion.. i started a thread for the 2013 boardie of the year but if there isn't much interest we don't need to do that one either...

I think if you were to nominate someone they need to be a current active member of the board and I would suggest that everyone is limited to one nomination.  Anyway I still think this is stupid.  Popularity contest among people who are so popular they spend time on a message board that no one posts on.

i would like to nominate hutch, for his entrepreneurship.  he saw that the "boardee of the year" market was under-served, and thus created a second thread  (http://forum.930.com/index.php?topic=23564.msg375568#new)- in hopes of cashing in on that BotY gravy.  well done.

one of my new year's resolutions is to start a thread that takes off... i've tried a few here and there and they've all sunk very quickly... from the quirky (Lady Gaga exploding tits, anyone?) to the guaranteed to succeed (at least two about soccer...)

its actually an embarrassment to me at this point when I should be reaching the mature phase  of my participation on this board..i just can't ever seem to stick to stuff though...

I mean if you're talking about a cumulative body of work, going all the way back to Rhett, then probably.  If we are talking about recent history, the past year or so, then it's a Atomic hands down.

But you also have to account for style.  Atomic trolls with absolutely no humility or sense of humor.  These are qualities that can make a troll amusing and even likable.

I think it might be sweetcell is the annoying one.  Both of your usernames start with "S" and both of you post about beer.  So it isn't that suprising that I get you two confused.  Anyway just because I post a lot doesn't mean I read others posts.  Hmm that might a personality flaw but I have a style and I guess it is best to stick to it.

  • An obvious self-focus in interpersonal exchanges
  • A lack of psychological awareness
  • Difficulty with empathy
  • Detesting those who do not admire them
  • Pretending to be more important than they really are
  • Bragging (subtly but persistently) and exaggerating their achievements
  • Claiming to be an "expert" at many things
  • Inability to view the world from the perspective of other people
  • Denial of remorse and gratitude
  • A sense of superiority places them above others
  • Have inflated egos, inflated sense of entitlement, inflated sense of importance, inflated need to be center stage

Is this the criteria for the Boardie of the Year Award?

If so, Julian is a shoo-in.

I took a personality test for management employees one time and they said I scored higher than  anyone else they tested before (at that company but it was a small company).  I did know I was taking the test before it was given to me so I just looked up on the Internet what the right answers were if you wanted to be a manager.  They were typically responses that would match the listing above.

Well played, sir!

The kid who was ejected from a Dream Theater show for dropping a cup with ice in it from the balcony into a trashcan near the soundboard.  Who later created another profile and started posting as his dad.

The show where some band refused to play the rest of their set, because someone was ejected for "rolling" a bottle on stage and wasn't allowed back in. Which became even more epic because the band didn't get paid for not playing all of  their contractually obligated set length.  I believe the thread was along "Tonight the heart of kids was destroyed".  Murder City Devils possibly?

The meltdown when The Walkmen had sound issues at the start of their set, even Twangirl had to weigh in on that one.

The reaction to the less than positive Post review of the first Arcade Fire show.

The forum vs DCist feud, started over them posting presale codes on their blog.

It was Murder City Devils where the band walked off the stage...  I managed to find this description of it.

"At one memorable concert, 25 minutes into the first set, the security staff at the 9:30 club in Washington, D.C., ejected a concert-goer, saying later that the man had thrown a bottle. The Murder City Devils stopped the concert and refused to play again "until our friend is let back in," according to Joe Heim of the Washington Post. Management refused, and so, after apologizing to the rest of the 300-plus crowd, the band packed up their instruments and left. Moody explained to Heim afterwards, "the guy was mellow. He wasn?t doing anything and they should have let him stay."

Interesting.  Sad that I missed out on all the fun threads.  On the Arcade Fire thing: who reads show reviews? I don't think there could be possibly anything more boring.  As Arcade Fire is the greatest live band in the world (well after Muse) hopefully the author has been fired by now.

Yeah, I don't remember what started it either, but somebody came to the forum, shockingly a tangent broke out, and a discussion on abortion started.  Generally speaking, I sit out most online political debates as I have find them pointless to everyone's true aim, which is to convince the other person to change their mind.  I do however, correct factual inaccuracies from time to time, so I follow along.

Originally, I assumed this was another Rhett and Celeste troll exercise to cure boredom, but within a half hour a number of other new folks joined in the fray and Smackie's spider senses sensed a conspiracy.  Through the old board technology, I discovered that they were all probably sitting in some dorm room or computer lab at CUA and did some cyber sleuthing.  I kept that quiet until they pretended as though they weren't in cahoots, but instead were doing us all a favor and saving our souls. I posted the first name and major of the OP and threatened I would out the rest of them if they didn't find some other sandbox to play in.

They left.

Or even before that, when the old board used a particular font where letters like a capital "i" and a lowercase "L" were interchangable, so board names like poorlulu and poorIuIu looked identical.

That is funny that people would do that.  I guess this board was more active then.  Going to that extant to get people upset seems pointless these days.  I guess it is nice that is a smaller community but we need a little more variety.

You take the good with the bad. Just think of all the childless couples who can't adopt.  But I am really not concerned with that I am concerned with people who have resources not having enough children.  Maybe I am not anti-abortion per se, more anti birth control.  I mean the Catholic church has that policy for a reason.  People could afford to send 4 kids to college and nurture them along the way and instead are only having one or two kids at most.   What do you think will happen to real estate prices if this trend continues?

I'm going to assume you are being satirical here.  But in case you are not...Do you have any idea how much it costs to raise children and send them to college?  I've got 2...and with a lot of sacrifice and saving and a TON of luck it looks like i might have enough to send them to college without them having to be swimming in debt when they are done.

I'm far from rich but do pretty ok.  Most people in this country can't even afford to send one kid to college.  Let alone 4.

PS - Most of those unwanted children don't get adopted.  They get raised along side their unwanted brothers and sisters.

Smackie is in favor of a woman's right to choose, but that wasn't the point of the thread.

But what about the economy?  Look at Europe and Japan don't you see what birth control is doing to their economies? I support a woman's right to choose who is going to impregnate her.  But we need more babies.  Think about my 401k and stop being so selfish people.

Yeah, but consider the effect that roe v wade had on the crime rate!  Our society is better for it.  Unwanted children grow up feeling....unwanted.  And their choices reflect it.

Seriously they should give people free in-state tuition for any kid you have more than 1 that you send to college.  And free day-care starting with your second child.  This would help the economy in the long run more than the current policies.  We have a lot more space in this country.

I guess another option to solve our long-term problems would to let millions of younger immigrants into the country each year with a decent amount  of them having college degrees

I really don't care whether anyone has an abortion or not but there should be some sort of incentive for people to have more kids either that or realize our future won't be bright.

They did not, and America passing on Hillary for Obama is still one of the dumbest things this country has ever done. For being handed the biggest carte blanche given to a Democratic president since FDR, he sure has managed to accomplish virtually nothing. Had you idiots went with Hillary, we'd have single payer insurance, a national gun registry, gay marriage in every state, and historic immigration reform. It is literally indefensible in 2014 to look back and choose Obama over Hillary. Indefensible.

I also didn't start the initial thread that was the genesis of the entire thing.

That said, as a HoF policy for this entirely tongue-in-cheek, not official user-curated thing we have going on, I'm all for people nominating their own threads if they think its worthy. We're pretty good about shouting things down if they're stupid. I feel confident if someone puts something dumb in here, people will point out if its not HoF worthy.
