Title: Meteorological Banter
Post by: grateful on February 28, 2014, 11:53:26 am
Here's the storm hitting California right now.  Equivalent to a Cat1/Cat2 hurricane...headed our way for a messy Monday.

Guess I better bring the work laptop home tonight. My kid's school will end up going into July. Glad I didn't plan a family vacation that first week of Summer Break.

The global warming to climate change seems to me people just grasping at straws.

I hope we get lots of snow.  A real snow storm like 2009.  I am sick of these little storms week after week.  Give us something with substance.

Unless you're workin' for the govt, I don't think many people get "snow days." However, if they don't grant you the flexibility to work from home, that's a pretty crappy company.

The weather outlook for the eastern U.S. is starting to resemble the plot of a 1970s disaster movie in which everything that could go wrong did.

From the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast, the coastal states have been soaked by rain. While this is happening, Hurricane Joaquin lurks in the shadows, passing over water that is just perfect for it to strengthen explosively. No one can say where it will go.

On top of that, high pressure in Canada and low pressure in the southern U.S. will conspire to slam the surf onto land, eroding beaches and keeping water pinned along the shoreline. As that happens, another round of rain could leave 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) in New England to as much as 5 to 8 inches from New Jersey to North Carolina.

In two hours, nearly six inches of rain had fallen, an event so extraordinary that the National Weather Service said it should, statistically, occur there just once every 1,000 years.

So, no.

As a hydrologist, I cringe every time someone on the news uses "100-year storm" or "1000-year storm".

The 100-year storm is an "exceedance probability", meaning there is a 1 percent chance of a storm of that magnitude occurring in a given year.

Old Elliott City was regrettably built at the confluence of about 5 streams.  Someone has cherry picked a piece of data somewhere in that watershed where 6 inches of rain fell.  A 1000-year event, while technically true, isn't the whole picture.

Yes it floods frequently there.  Development in Howard County most likely makes runoff more intense then it once was.  Climate change is also throwing our statistics out of whack.

At the risk of sounding like a dick, it should be noted that penis-shaped weather maps are actually quite common.

One woman said, “I’m sick and tired of being promised 6-7 inches and only getting 4!!!” to which another commenter replied, “Well it’s probably because your messing with the wrong weather guy.”

Another guy hoped the storm would prematurely finish and leave people “very unimpressed with the overall experience.”

Other hilarious reactions include:

“If this storm lasts longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.”

“Tennessee says, ‘Not right now Texas I’m tired.’”

“Don’t expect this storm to pull out quickly...”

“I guess you could say Mother Nature really has a hard on for the gulf coast lately.”

“Storms definitely going to penetrate deep down south.”

“There should always be a warning when it’s more than 6 inches.”

The most philosophical response to the penis-shaped weather map may be one from a woman who wondered how future generations might view it.

“In a few thousand years, some alien historian is going to stumble across this post and read the comments and finally understand, after years of study, exactly how we humans, a clever and able species, managed to let ourselves get caught in another ice age, for we were too busy making dick jokes to flee, and I’m ok with that.”

Florence is small potatoes.  This is Super Typhoon Mangkhut.  In addition to packing 150mph winds and a 600-mile wide rain band, "Mangkhut" is a much cooler name than "Florence."  And that small little green thing on the left of the photo is the Philippines.

The Associated Press reports that the storm may unload 18 trillion gallons of rain on the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. “Florence’s 18 trillion gallons is as much water as there is in the entire Chesapeake Bay,” its article says. “It’s also enough to cover the entire state of Texas with nearly four inches (10 centimeters) of water.”

same.  one of many blessings that i am very grateful for.  (well, i am allergic to naproxen and likely aspirin, but it's pretty easy to stay away from those - unlike pollen).

just about everyone else around me suffers, and i so mean suffers, from seasonal allergies.  look horrible (doesn't sound great either).

You can be guaranteed, that when it is destroyed, your American tax dollars will be used to pay for it to be rebuilt, and there's not a dam thing you can do about it.  Plus, all the contractors to do it, will only be allowed to stay at other Trump owned properties, while the job is being done, so he gets that money too.

And poor people who can't pay their rent, will vote for him in 2020 . . . because they hate rich people.

Who's barge is this barge? (https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/09/16/hurricane-sally-flooding-florida-alabama/)

In Escambia Bay, an entire section was missing from the newly constructed Three Mile Bridge after a state contractors’ construction barge was torn loose from its moorings and collided with the structure. A crane had fallen on another section of the bridge, and a second barge was carried 10 miles west, where it washed ashore on the 18th hole of the golf course at the Pensacola Country Club.

So she can belittle me for being a lazy sack of shit who only works eight or nine hours.

Just kidding. I don't really know. She has deadlines, and that's how long it takes to get things done sometimes in a professional business job. My job is more of a research position, with softer deadlines. She seems to think what she has is the norm, whereas I have one of those pussy government jobs. She thinks it's the expectation of most employers that you work beyond 40. Is she wrong?

Unless she’s a lawyer, a 70-hour work week is not common nor a sign of a particularly well run company. Neither I nor my CEO exceed 55 hours in a week ever. Rarely over 50.

50 is near standard where I work. If you want to do a good job, anyway. Is that actually a good thing? Not sure.

Thanks for your input (I'm saying that without my usual sarcasm.) Good to know. I don't really know what the norm is, having never worked in the business world. I'm not saying 70 is her norm, but sometimes 14 hour days happen. She'd be able to more accurately state the norm/average, but if i had to guess, it's probably 50-55.

That said, she's efficient, organized, and on her game (and spends zero work time posting on internet forums, lol) so i have no reason to believe that it's due to anything other than the shittiness of her employer.

Edit: Current timesheet shows 120 hour worked in two weeks time, and that's typical.

Based on your claims of near poverty in the past, my assumption is she isn't making buckets of money*. I learned after multiple years of answering emails at both 1am and 6am and working 10+ hours a day every day, not taking real vacations, etc... that it's just not worth it**, really no matter how much you're making. I'd tell the wife to find another job or ask for a massive raise if she's truly working those kind of hours.

Thanks. Without going into too much detail, I'd say we're well above poverty and well below buckets of money. She did recently get as 10%+ annual raise, but it's not money we need, and it would have been better served with some kind of promise to better distribute the work.  Getting another job has been discussed on and off for years....

yada makes a good point (ouch that hurt to say)
if it were her own business...I could see 70 hour weeks...and works out to less than minimum wage sometimes...with way more risk

but if you are working for someone else and not getting paid $250k, kinda insane to work that much
and if she's that good and working that hard, I'm sure there are tons of other opportunities out there

now if twice a month there is an all-nighter, that I can see
I work in IT and that is know to happen, but it's not an everyday/every week thing

Unfortunately, it's fairly standard for employers to expect a 50 hour work model from staff ...the American way
especially if they are non-exempt

then they also screw exempt employees often by not giving them more than 30 hours a week, so not eligible for bennies and such

EAT THE RICH!

fellow IT'er here, and 50-55 hours/week is damn standard.  i regularly put in 8 hours in the office*, and anything less than another 2 hours at night was a blessing.  stupid, but it's the expectation... i rarely worked on weekends, luckily, although an occasional sunday night was spent working on a monday deadline.

now consulting - that's a fucking shredder.  60 hours a week minimum, and work almost every weekend.  it's why i got out.  the promise of future money didn't justify the current pain.  my boss kept telling me that a few more years and i'd be rolling in it - in the meantime, he hadn't attended a single one of his kids' games or recitals.  ever.  his deal was that he made a boatload of money and his wife did 100% of the family/home stuff.  worked for him but not something i wanted.  at all.

* talking about my last job.  currently looking for my next opportunity.  damn covid.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say for practical reasons four inches is probably preferable to 12.

Better to go out on a limb than to have to go down on a limb. Shovel 12 inches and you'll probably be sore for weeks.

After you've had a couple of 12 inch storms, you realize that four inches can be quite pleasing as well and leave you far less sore with less cleanup. Though six inches might give you the best sledding.

I was about to co-sign this but I just remembered sophomore year in college I bought a pair of orange cargo pants with zip off legs (basically converted into cargo shorts) as a joke because my friends and I thought they were the most ridiculous things we'd ever seen. the west coast is about to enter a record-braking heat wave.  people in seattle are freaking the fuck out because of the lack of A/C in most houses.  A/C units are sold out everywhere.  not having cool nights is going to be weird.  thank goodness our basement remains cool, we'll all be sleeping down there.

Likely 'the most extreme and prolonged heat waves in the recorded history' for the Northwest start today (https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/25/weather/heat-wave-forecast-oregon-washington-idaho-friday/index.html)

Just seems like the wrong latitude for this hidden country of the well heeled

the system’s life as a named storm will be short as forecasters will probably downgrade Julian to a post-tropical storm some time Monday.

My condolences on the downgrade

On Brand for a disappointing performance

Short-lived Tropical Storm Julian (since downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone) which formed yesterday has dissipated

at least kate is threating, not like post-tropical Julian (is that like what comes from people influenced by Jimmy Buffet?)

Tropical Storm Kate was downgraded to a tropical depression Tuesday
For now, Kate is expected to remain over open waters of the central North Atlantic and only threaten shipping lanes; no interactions with land are expected over the next five days.

So what meds are advised for tropical depression...seems like margaritas

It was 71 degrees outside yesterday at 4 pm in Richmond at which point the city’s school system (and the two major surrounding counties) all announced school would be closed due to snow. Now, sure enough, there was sleet and snow overnight and it’s warranted within the confines of how little infrastructure there is here for snow removal but at the time when today was declared a snow day, it was, at that moment, 71 degrees.

My massively paranoid friend who was one of people that legitimately didn't leave his house for 18 months refuses to fly... we'll, his family made the wise decision to drive to Florida for the holidays (with a toddler and eight year old), as of last night they were setting up shop in a roach hotel outside of Richmond that probably has it's own variant brewing indoors.

FCPS closed again tomorrow. Fifth straight day.

Only three of the days were actual instructional days. Two of the days (Thurs and Fri) were relgious observance days, meaning no new material can be taught on those days....total bullshit, but that's another story....I probably would have kept my kid home Thurs and Fri anyway.

Looks like we may do it all over again next week. Though any snow day now is a virtual day.

Though there's not much school actually planned nexxt week at FCPS anyway:

Monday: MLK day, no school
Tuesday: full day school
Wednesday: No new instruction, religious holiday (11 of these during school year, WTF, how about separation of church and state)
Thursday: two hour early dismissal
Friday: Teacher workday

mild freakout on the Interweb because "Snow In Mexico City In June!!!!" but turns out there was an explanation

Hailstones pile up like snow after severe storm creates chaos in Mexico City

Mexico City was pummeled by an intense hailstorm on June 12, causing chaos on the roads as a thick blanket of ice formed over the asphalt. Several homes were damaged but no injuries were reported.

and: if you can't solve the entire problem all by yourself, you shouldn't bother doing anything?

so in your worldview, there is NO other reason to not have kids other than simply "don't want to be a parent"?  you're not allowed having a thought-out reason?  anyone who claims to have more complex reasons MUST be lying?

weird.

clearly particular issue grinds your gears, for whatever reason... but it's just strange that you, a generally level-headed person IMO, need to project your interpretation on everyone else and deny them the possibility of having justification(s) different than yours.

We are about to hit 8 billion people. I believe just in my lifetime the world’s population has gone from about 3.8 to almost 8 billion so more than doubled in about 50 years.

I think human beings should think about that and it’s consequences if we keep it up. It would mean that I think that in 100 years there could be 30 billion people!?!

Now as we all know the real fast growth is generally not happening in the more developed world.

Surely there must be some point at which the actions of our species and in exponentially increasing numbers threatens our planet?

Our plan as a species seems to be to figure everything will just take care of itself.

This seems like a fairly big deal.

Throw in global warming- which we refuse to really address- and I think we really need an intervention.

population (and how it consumes all the natural resources in its reach) is the key here, I am 100 % in agreement

Ok, I'm definitely being harsh on people you likely know and like.  that was not my intention
the thing that riles me is it's similar to that 'reason' you need for buying a gun...you are buying it to kill people (be it intentional, self-inflicted or in 'defense')

and this is the problem with the Georgia's Stones thing
In parts of the world, there is a disaster brewing and it's all because of overpopulation
we are not having that problem anywhere in the US, so we citizens are going to have zero impact and not be as impacted

but if Bangladesh or some other area with millions of poor people in a low lining area...those areas we should think about population control...but then you sound like a eugenics guy...and that's not good

it's been said before...we need to look at what we are putting on our plate
that is causing in the 25% range of the problem in green house gasses...so we should look at that too

we are not having population issues in the US
we do have a consumption issue that is creating destruction of resources all over the world

anyone who claims to have more complex reasons MUST be lying?
I didn't say they were lying, I just feel it's a statement made by some family that doesn't want kids and that may be one of the reasons, but when they are discussing this topic, that is the reason they use
Mostly because we live in a society where it is looked down upon if you are married and don't have kids
so just saying 'we really don't want the hassle/cost of raising a family and just want to live our life without that" should be fine

but maybe you are right, this is the only reason they have.
They have spent their whole life saving and planning to have children, Set up a 529, painted the kids bedroom and then read the news and were like 'man, even though we really wanted to have kids, in 30 or so years when they are adults, things might be so bad we don't want to bring someone into that"

Quote
clearly particular issue grinds your gears, for whatever reason... but it's just strange that you, a generally level-headed person IMO, need to project your interpretation on everyone else and deny them the possibility of having justification(s) different than yours.
I would say this is accurate, but I'm not denying them for having a justification, I just think it's virtue signaling rather than the sole reason

let me be clear they and think and do whatever they want, I would never stop them
but I'm allowed to have an opinion on their presentation of their decision
For me when people say they do X because of Y...I feel that often Y is a minor factor and X was happening, but now they have Y as cover for the decision
who the fuck knows, I wish no ill will

oh and get the fuck off my lawn before I fill you with buckshot

spent a little time looking into this and still not clear exactly what happened.  i've gathered that he was helping a stranded motorist when he was hit - perhaps this car was pulled off to the side of the road, Renner was outside the car/walking to it when he was struck by a plow, maybe?  what got me really confused was that one paper said he was struck by his own plow... so he forgot to put it in park or use emergency brake before getting out to help stranded car??

Did anyone use their AC yesterday?

It was 77 degrees in our house at bedtime last night, and both me and my daughter wanted to put the AC on.

I was screamed at and repeatedly called an "asshole" and "trash." She argued that "You don't put your AC on when it's 75 degrees out." She aid that she "didn't really care, it's the principle of it" and "it's a waste of energy."

This from a person who insists on keeping the window by the couch wide open in January when it's 30 out and the heat is blasting....making watching tv a frigid experience. "Because I like fresh air."

I used AC in my car earlier

Did you consider opening a window….personally am not a fan of fresh air

It just got too hot yesterday
Title: Re: Meteorological Banter
Post by: Space Freely on March 24, 2023, 09:50:13 am
I usually put the AC on 76 during day and 74 at night.

I run the heat at 68 during day and 66 at night.

So personally, I know I sleep ok between 66 and 74.

She insisted all we need to do was open a window, but I felt like if it really was 75 out at 10pm, the open window wasn't going to cool down the house at all in a short period of time. A quick blast of AC (set un 74, it's not like it was going to run all night), however, would.

I went on vacation with my brother last September, to Arizona and Utah. He insisted on running the AC on the airbnb and the motel suite at 60, because "that's what people sleep best at" and "I don't care about the energy, I'm not paying for it." As soon as he as asleep, I would sneak to the thermostat and put the AV on 70 or something more reasonable than 60.

We clearly need to add funding to the National Weather Service to improve our short term weather forecasting models to address this national emergency. And launch a nationwide fitness program to increase our running speed, so that we can outrun the weather.

Or maybe just, y'know, check the radar. Hourly forecasts are shite.

on the west coast, we count on having an annual wildfire season, AKA air filled with smoke, checking the hourly PM2.5 forecast, fire up the air filters, etc.  we got a break last year, but we're like 5-for-6 since i got here.  it sucks.  old-time PNW'ers tell me it's a new phenomena... hopefully it's not going to become part of your reality.

Phoenix has had 118 consecutive days without rain.

also on their 19th day in a row of hitting 110*F or more, breaking their previous record of 18 days from 1974.  forecast predicts nothing but 110+ for the next 9 days.  must be a miserable place to live right now (more so than usual...)

phoenix is also out of water.  they city is contemplating investing $5.5 billion (likely to end up costing way more) to build a desalination plant at the top of the gulf of california in mexico (https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/as-arizona-looks-to-desalination-as-a-drought-solution-questions-mount-over-its-feasibility-for-the-state), and a pipeline to carry the water to the city.  sheer madness.  at some point we're going to have to admit that we can't, and shouldn't, live in certain places - like the middle of a frikken desert.

Maybe also don’t lease what water supply you have to foreign companies to use on your land?  Seems like a bad idea but what do I know.

Tornado on top of a mountain

Possible free band name there

The damage survey along Pikes Peak is complete and the survey team found damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado with estimated winds up to 108 mph.

otis is a much more pressing concern... hopefully the folks in acapulco have time to get supplies and find shelter.  storm went from tropical depression to Cat 4 in less than 24 hours, which is unheard of, and is expected to landfall as a Cat 5.
