Title: Meta: Thread Clutter
Post by: atomic on March 13, 2014, 10:46:07 am
Killsally mentioned all the threads are causing to much clutter on the site.  I tend to agree and I have some ideas on how to eliminate it.

1) Consolidate the "Just Announced", "Just Announced Commentary", "Just Announced NYC", "Just Announced non-mid atlantic", "what did you just buy tickets to", "this week's roll call", "ShowlistDC" and "ask Seth".  These are all the same thing.  You would think perhaps "Hey Seth" is not but it is. No one asking Seth to go on camping trips or stating "Hey Seth, lets go to that new Martini Bar on Friday Night".  They are just asking him for shows he has already planned and they are just waiting for him to announce them.

2) Sports threads - Do we really need seperate threads for Capitals, Landover, NFL Team, and the Orioles?  Plus that stupid soccer thread no one cares about. The Ravens should keep their own thread because they are champions.

3) Smacky thread.  We can merge this into two other threads.  He only talks about two things cell phones and sports.  Put the cell phone stuff in the "nerds" thread and put the sport talk in the Sports thread.

4) New Music thread.  We have What are you listening to right now, musilogical banter 2014 albums, 2013 albums, 2012 albums and I am sure in a month or so 2015 albums.  No one reads any of these or cares what you are listening to..  Put them all together and people can easily by-pass them.

5) We have prestige TV and then we have specific show threads.  No show deserves its own thread.  Anytime you do start a show specific thread it is on some stupid show I don't watch.

6) DJ Sets - no one reads them and no one cares if they exist.  Delete them and ban the users who started them as these people re bound to start more clutter.

This would make it easier to find quality threads like

* "would you hit it"
* "walky cat photos"
* "Julian's America"
*"Sexual Tension"
*"James Fords Rants againt bald men"

and also allowing for new cool threads like

* "Dog Photos",
* 'What cute thing did your baby do today"
*"Photos of your baby"*
 "Financial Advice"
*"How to max out your 401k"
*"Cool Cars"
* "How to pick up hot chicks"
* "how to pick up hot guys"
* "How to raise  your baby"
* "How my child is better than yours"
* "Expensive things I bought that makes me cooler than you".
* "Stuck in traffic"
* "Post your  photo"

Man this place could become pretty nice with a little bit of changes.

I never understood the purpose of the "Hey Seth" thread.  I know he checks it, since i see him post in it, but i doubt he makes booking decisions based upon what a couple local area music nerds want to see.

@atomic - I have the perfect plan for you.  Go to the threads you love.  See up where it says "reply"?  Right next to that, it says "notify".  Click on that.  Everytime there is an update in a thread that you love, you'll get an email with a link.  You can click the link to go straight to the thread, where you can add your own commentary.  The best part of this plan is that you never have to be concerned about what other people want to talk about.  It is the ultimate in customization!  DO THIS NOW!!!

Do it now.

I don't have the attention span to read your whole post, but it did remind me of something I always wonder.

Why is it we talk about every sport imaginable on here, including the most boring sport of all. The one which often ends in a 0-0 tie with about four total shots in goal for the entire game....but we never talk about basketball, which actually has the most scoring and is reasonably exciting to watch?

Then my email in-box will be filled with clutter.  And new users can't see fun new threads.  They just see 10 threads about the same thing and just move on to some other "cooler" message board forum.

We play basketball every Monday at lunch when it is nice outside.  Playing Basketball is fun watching basketball is boring. I am guessing Soccer could be fun to play at lunch as well but you need more people.

I would discuss college basketball if someone started a thread. The NBA I have a standing rule to only discuss with people who acknowledge there is no way in hell that Michael Jordan voluntarily left the sport for one and a half years in the middle of his absolute prime. Anyone who is unwilling to acknowledge that is so homoeroticly in love with Michael Jordan that it skews their entire viewpoint on everything going on in the sport since then.

His father did not just pass away he was murdered by a mob family after MJ because he could not pay them off after his gambling problem escalated him into owing the mob family $ after losing in their casino. Since, his dad was a professional baseball player and because he always promised his dad he would play baseball in his honor when his father was murdered he did it in dedication to his father.

David Stern encouraged Jordan to retire temporarily so he could quietly sweep his gambling problems under the rug

 The thing about his father passing away and wanting to spend more time with his family was B.S.

Well played. I thought someone would go with the studies that Ridperidone + either Depakote or Lithium produces extreme constipation in close to a third of people, but your side-effect joke is probably even better.

I would argue that that would only require one meta-, because it would indicate the subject matter is self-referential to begin with.

I like that Seth posts here I just don't like everyone stating things like "Nick Cave" 20 times in a row when we already know Seth is going to book him if he can.  Totally pointless.  Maybe Hey Seth shouldn't have any band requests in it.  Instead you could ask him things like drumming hints,  marital advice, and what automobile does he recommend for impressing chicks.

It is.  I can't stop people from posting in "Hey Seth" , "Just Announced", and "ShowlistDC".  This is a team effort.  We actually have two threads with "Comic Books" in the thread title.  I don't see a point to either.  You could just put that in the books thread.

Who is this Dupek character?  First you guys told me I was Julian who then came back and turned out to be a big boost to the forum.  So if Dupek is anything like Julian and I bring him back.

Really I don't know what you guys did after Julian stopped posting and before I started posting.    Well you had Walky which was good  but otherwise...... You know just copying bands playing somewhere from other sites or posting what you are listening to does not build a community.  I want everyone to feel part of something special. ..... Not just a site where people copy from ShowListDC's site and post in Just Announced and then reply in Just Announced Commentary that the accoustics suck at that venue.

build a community.... With what? A thread to brag about what cars people have? Or so we can find out the burning question of why someone was divorced?

This "community" is one that shares these commonalities already:
(Mostly) local
Music fans

No one is bragging about cars.  I actually posted a dream car.  Do you think anyone cares that the Thrushes are playing Metro Gallery?  I have seen them twice and even I don't care.   We are local and we enjoy music that doesn't mean we can't learn about each other.   Just mindlessly posting shows that are at known venues that have websites isn't helping the community.  If it was at at place like the soft house than I appreciate it but the smoking at these shows has caused me to lose interest.

If you don't want to socialize and showlistdc has every show why come here?

And actually someone else is into cars or motorcycles helps build a community.  No I don't socialize on Facebook I find it boring.

I think you are assuming that your goals for the board are the same for everybody.  You seem to have a blind spot for the idea that the things your personalities are doing might drive people away.  In fact, I bet there will be fewer posters once you shit all over this place.

GYOFB.

I am improving the board.  We have more posts.  I only have one personality.  I don't know why you don't like people posting.  Who would we drive away.  I have no idea what threads of mine would be considered shitting all over the place.  I have no idea what GYOFB means nor do I care. If you are too lazy to type something out why even bother posting?

I have no idea what GYOFB means

It's a band.  They are playing on a triple bill at Metro Gallery with Frozen Urethra and Goran Pzeblkzgi.

Man I've really been meaning to catch Frozen Urethra, I haven't seen them since the Transvaginal ultrasound tour they did wearing Woman's condoms on their heads
