Title: Favorite Sets of 2014
Post by: Rogue Riderhood on December 14, 2014, 02:07:12 pm
Here are my 25 favorite sets of 2014 with a picture taken at each (from my Instagram).  They are more or less in chronological order.  Most were in Baltimore or DC.

My blog also has short writeups on why I liked each set at:

--Best of 2014--
Low (Montreal)
Slowdive (Iceland, Washington, Philadelphia)
Slint (Philadelphia)
Shalabi Effect (Montreal)
Cibo Matto (Washington, Philadelphia)
Nick Cave solo (Montreal)
A Silver Mt. Zion (Wakefield, QC)

honorable mentions: Philip Glass + Steve Reich Ensemble (New York), Caetano Veloso (New York),
Land of Kush (Montreal), Spiritualized (Iceland), GYBE (Montreal), Kraftwerk (Washington)

the latter two were good but I just saw them too often in the last 2 years.

Somewhat disappointed by Pixies (Washington), Trans Am (Washington), Interpol (Iceland)
and don't think I will see these bands another time.

Hightlight of the year: Meeting Arvo Pärt in person.

This year,  sadly, is the first in which I've struggled to remember all the shows I went to. And not because there were lots of them.

A lot of these were firsts for me, hence me liking them so much:

Protomartyr - Gold Bar
Sharon van Etten - 930
Swans - Black Cat
Qotsa/St Vincent - MPP
Neutral Milk Hotel - MPP
Emma Ruth Rundle - dc9
Ty Segall - 930
Damned - Black Cat
Priests - Black Cat

Plus a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting.......

I hardly went to any shows this year. Sad.

But, Queens of the Stone Age/St. Vincent were amazing.

Had tickets to Nick Cave, but couldn't go because of husband's ankle break.

And Tori...fantastic as always.

If I had to vote for Most Epic Guitar Shredder of the Year, my vote would go to Marissa Paternoster for both of her projects that I saw this year (solo as Noun at the Ottobar upstairs, and as the frontperson for Screaming Females later in the year at the Ottobar downstairs).

I am going to assume you don't watch the video.  But if you did, you would see her doing her thing, rocking out on vocals and guitar.

That solo starting at 1:11... She shreds.

Crowd surfing at 2:16...

The ending... damn

I am filing a challenge to your alleged trademark of earlier today, with the USPTO.. I think its clear that you lost the rights to the trademark after you freaked out and cancelled your account..... coming back with a different name was an implicit admission that you no longer had the rights to said trademark.

I have a very good friend who works with the USPTO regularly (former Patent Examiner) and another who is currrently at the USPTO so I would suggest you cease use of the name immediately.

Jeez.  All of that, ie cancelling accounts, coming back as a different account, etc, was all me having a bit of a laugh.

I averaged about one show a week this year, definitely not a record year for me (though some weeks it was three shows, and sometimes it was two weeks between shows).

I still have a two day music festival and two shows left this year.

I am usually insane with the merch, but this year I decided to really slow down (I have over 200 concert t shirts, tons of posters, other random shit) though I did pick up a few things.

I was at that show. They wrote a book about it?????

I was sorta kidding about the book.  Had no idea.  That's a pretty cool, but expensive, souvenir of that day.  May pick one up.

Glad to see this so high on your list. I remember Azaghal raving about that show too. Saw her/them the next night in Richmond; I went in only knowing one song and was completely blown away by the set.

No, but I should.  I just went back over my Google calendar.  I mark all of my maybes on it, and if I do not go to a show, I delete it from the calendar.

I have been tempted to go back to my ticket stubs and posters and t shirts to try to figure out what else I saw in previous, non-tracked, years.

I have a written record of every show, the date, venue, who I went with, if I have them handy setlists, etc. It really helps to go through it periodically because I'm realizing I'm completely starting to forget some stuff.

I don't have setlists or who attended with me, but I have pieced the rest of that together for myself in Excel. Wishing I'd done Access from the beginning.

A website for a personalized listing of what shows I've seen and who the openers were? Is GuestOfAGuest following me around again? I sent them a cease and desist.

Someone get my lawyer on the phone.

List was chronological....although some may be a little out of order...

I was so tired at the Waxahatchee show that I was falling asleep standing up, and i think the first few songs she played were slow/quiet. I remember it getting more interesting as it went on though...

I just keep a note in my "Notes" app on the iPhone of the show number, band(s), and venue.
