Title: Need help, trying to get an autograph for best friend's birthday
Post by: sgoldberg08 on January 26, 2015, 04:06:32 pm
I really really want to get my best friend something special for her birthday.  She loves London Grammar, and they're playing the 9:30 on the 29th.  I'm trying to get something autographed by the band.  If you can help me out, I'll reward you handsomely.  Cash, labor, first born...whatever you want.

I can't tell you how much I'd appreciate someone helping to make this happen.

So are you saying that you get all three, or do I have to pick one?

I could easily achieve this task for you, but I only accept payment in limbs. The glaring omission of "my left leg" from your list of payment options renders me unwilling to assist you.

first born: crap shoot....I mean a blond blue eyed white girl I'm sure would be worth something.  But in the end, too much overhead, time and changing diapers
Cash: pretty easy pick, but how much are we really talking here?
Labor: this is a gift that could keep on giving, you could also get cash and a first born out of this one

So you're basically going to require sgoldberg08 to whore themselves out and you pocket the cash and sell the child produced by the illicit union off into slavery?

Just once can we get through a day in this community without an international sex slave ring being proposed? JUST ONCE.

if that guy was around he'd probably have helped... i know he talked to peter hook one time cause i was standing outside...

there are a few diffferent strategies

1. get there really early so when they get there they reward your devotion
2. as they are going off stage stalk them/shout/ take your clothes off to get attention..wave the album around, yell please.. if they go off stage talk to the roadies
3. after show wait around... sometimes bands go to the bar downstairs..sometimes they go out front and talk between themselves...sometimes as they get into a limo/van to leave they will stop
4. every case is different and there are no guarantees....the 930 is not the easiest venue for autographs in my experience...

but if your friend is going with you not sure how you can do this?

To clarify a couple things:

1. I actually am not going to the show.  That's why I was hoping to connect with someone with access to the band, like perhaps backstage before they go on.

2. If you were to choose cash, I was thinking around $100.  But who knows, I may be so appreciative in the moment that I might throw in a little extra.

If there's anything I'm proud of myself about in the Julian II era, its that I've inspired so many to research the email addresses of anyone new who shows up. You just know someone is calling this guy's law firm at some point today.  :D

For $100, I will be glad to go on ebay, purchase you an autograph for $40-50 (which seems to be the going rate) and ship it to you first class. Are my terms acceptable?

That's an option I've explored myself, but I would always wonder if it was legit or not.  Plus it'd make for a pretty shitty story if she asked how I got it.

To be fair, you're asking random people on the internet to get it for you. Both of those issues are still very much in play.

It's a risk that can't be completely avoided.  Best I can do is minimize it, and I thought this approach might be a good way to do that.

I would trust a reputable ebay seller selling an item that appears similar to an untrained eye to google image searched examples of the band's autograph way before I would trust the hooligans that frequent this place. I mean, you showed up and people had your dog's name and your employer in like 4 minutes. You want to send us money? Your address? This is as dangerous as a diabetic swimming in a vat of pure, unadulterated cane sugar.

jules, really?  cyber-stalking is sooooo beneath you.
Two things:

(1) I'm not even the person who did it first, if you read the thread.

(2) Do you see Brian Wallace gracing our community with his hateful, misogynistic visage? No? Sweets, we live in a community that has trolls and those trolls need to be combated by men with google. Who's gonna do it? You? Kosmo? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for this guy and curse the ease at which an unguarded email address gives you someone's facebook profile; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that innocent people's photos getting posted, while tragic, probably saved lives and that my clandestine activities, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, save lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that nexus search, you need me on that nexus search. We use words like profile, public records, confirmable identity. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very community I organize and then questions the manner in which I organize it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you take four hours out of your work day and figure out boardie's phone numbers and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think is beneath whom.

In my many years of internetting, I've found forums that have less than 100 active posters never gain new blood... Too many inside jokes, too many tools, too much repetition... Why would a fine young man like Goldberg want to start wasting his time with a bunch of people that have most likely been posting here for a better part of the past 10 years?

Again with the autograph request! You're like an Arfin with a bone! I'm starting to think you don't care about us at all!

In all honesty, I would find the possibility of you getting an autograph through this board extremely, extremely remote. Personal message Seth or Eddie; I don't think anyone else on here has any real pull. Perhaps our poor treatment of you will encourage them to look upon you kindly?

we live in a community that has trolls and those trolls need to be combated by men with google.

right, and walalce was a troll.  a worthy target.  good riddance.

but sgoldberg08?  they seems like a nice person trying to do something nice for a friend.  they clearly have a sense of humor, putting up with 5 pages of shinanigans.  unless i've missed something here, there is no reason to dox this person per your misplaced call to arms:
Who will be first to post an actual picture of this guy and risk a ban? Kosmo, what sort of mood are you in today?

No one doxxed this guy. Running a google search on an email address is not doxxing. No one has posted any personally identifiable info of this guy on here, unless his dog's name counts. People confirmed he is a real person, not an atomic/Brian Wallace. Whatever info anyone has found, they haven't posted it or done anything with it, to the best of my knowledge.

And I also did not call anyone to arms. I, in no way, encouraged anyone to post a picture of the guy and alluded to the (proper) punishment for doing so: a ban.

There, it's out in the open.  That's me, and below is my dog, Arfin (though he prefers to go by Arf, Arfie, or Derp).  I really am just trying to do something nice for a friend.

While I'm starting to doubt this is going to happen, I still appreciate the help I've gotten so far.  I'm at least closer than I was before.

Perhaps if you posted some photos of the female friend this is for, it would humanize the request. Put a face to it, so to speak.

Google Reverse Image Search shows neither of those photos showing up anywhere else, although the visually similar images results for the first one is a rather humorous collection.

You know, if Julian was really a community organizer he would probably have some sort of "welcome" package for new folks rather than creepily discussing ways to stalk them or goading them into posting pictures of themselves, their pets, and/or their female friends.  Just sayin'

Sorry, gonna respect her privacy and decline to post any pictures of her.  Suffice it to say she's a normal looking girl with brown hair and a pretty smile.  You'll have to close your eyes and use some imagination past that.

I think you misunderstood my use of "organizer." You're thinking I meant "guy who helps grow the community," whereas I meant more of a "organize a mob" type thing. Easy mistake to make!

That said, if sgoldberg08 will PM me his address, I will prepare him a welcome package which will, sadly, not include an autographed photo of a band I'd never heard of until yesterday but, happily, will include my famous gluten-free, sugar-free vegan banana cookies!

Regular like.  She's a longtime friend.  I'm married (I would've thought you knew that already...).

I don't normally put in this level of effort for birthday presents, but the timing was there and she deserves it.

I disagree completely. People show up here from time to time requesting autographs or backstage passes and are summarily ignored. If anything, the actions of Yada and myself have brought this guy's attempt more attention than it ever would've gotten otherwise and have ballooned this to a 80+ post thread in less than a day.

damn.  feel stupid.  I didn't even read that line from Goldberg about the couch.  I had some crazy vision, that kosmo was actually going to call the band and say,

Can we address that Walkie's letter -- while well-intentioned -- basically sounds like what someone would say if they were trying to trick their grandmother into doing something? Nothing says rock and roll quite like "Isn't that sweet of him?"

What did your message to them say?
I told them my best friend is a huge fan of their opener Until The Ribbon Breaks, and could they please help out by asking them to sign an autograph and mail it to me. My plan is they're going to feel really awkward about asking their opener to do this and send me their own autograph instead as a sort of "I'm sorry" gesture. I will then take that autograph and mail it to you, leaving the band none the wiser that I manipulated them into giving me an autograph they never knew I wanted anyway.

I agree wholeheartedly.  Though I think the ebola/brain tumor route may be a little too transparent.  The challenge is coming up with a lie that is reasonable enough to be believable, yet will still catch attention and inspire action.  Unfortunately, the reasonable/motivational spectra share such little common real estate that hitting the overlap is like finding the spot on the urinal that doesn't create splash back.

It really depends on your skin tone going on. When you wear concealer, on the standard 9 point scale, which do you buy?

Everyone,

As the clock ticks down, I just wanted to say thanks for your help in trying to get this autograph for me.  Whether you personally messaged the band or came back to the thread every day, I appreciate it.

I knew it was a long shot, but hey, we tried.  And I know I had fun.  The witty banter was entertaining, if nothing else.

Just because London Grammar goes on in a few hours and then leaves DC forever doesn't mean this thread has to die.  It's original purpose may expire, but surely it has other uses.

So I've said my piece, which means all that's left to do is tastefully don my disguise and try to catch the band after the show.  Julian, how do I look?

Why, yes . . . You are, officially one of us.  Welcome, brother (no pun intended).

That's some good, old-fashioned family friendly racism.

That's some good, old-fashioned family friendly racism.

It may be racially insensitive, but I disagree that it's racism.

In any case, the distinction is irrelevant, because my takeaway from the past 3 days is that the only rule is there are no rules.

Just woke up.  Uhh.  But, this was the first thing I thought of.  And the club twitter person last night was . . . Post happy.

It's a given that the bigger the hype the more they tweet a show

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not seeing a ton of twitter action.  Then again, I'm like a grandpa trying to check my email on Compuserve when it comes to twitter.  No idea how to use it.

For anyone interested, the conclusion to the story.

Having come to terms with the failure of the mission, I did as Julian suggested and turned to eBay.  Picked up a microphone signed by the lead singer, Hannah Reid, for about $50.

The story will go something like I reached out all over the internet, people put me in touch with other people, blah blah blah, somehow got connected with the owner of the club who said he could make something happen.  After the show, he emailed me and said Hannah signed the microphone from the show and its at the club for me to pick up.

Whatever... the truth is what I say it is.

The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.
