+50 yada...well played!
so do we have any presale info?
-
So awesome
-
i realize that i'm about to ask for perspective from a bunch of people who probably lack it, but here goes anyways: anyone else think that echostage might be a bit big, as far as a venue choice?
before people freak out: i know how seminal they were to indie rock, how much they mean to the minority of music aficionados that populate this board, blah blah blah... that being said, i'm wondering if they can pull in 3,000+ people here in DC.
discuss.

will sell out the first day...no question
end of discussion
Although truth be told much rather have seen the at the club
(also I may lack perspective...but damn I got a lot of heart)

:) :) :) :) :)
thrilled

How does it compare to Lister or the Warner Theatre? They sold those out back before anyone seemed to like them.
So this is real? What's Echoplex like and when can we buy tix?
-
Too bad the show is when I am away :(
-
How is echostage? Where does it fall on the fun to stodgy scale (is there such a scale)?
Also,

How long do we think they can keep running with the throwback, awe shucks, underdog thing. . ?
Not that that hasn't been my thing since whenever it was a thing. Oh damn, I'm jaded.

3,000 - 6,000 standing capacity from various sources ::)
decent venue according to a friend
but hard to find street parking

but hard to find street parking
Valet parking (http://www.echostage.com/parking/). It's not very "rock 'n roll" but neither is a reunion gig at a 3,000-6,000 capacity venue.

Valet parking (http://www.echostage.com/parking/).
Something 930 Club desperately needs to adopt. They have an entire lot: why am I unable to get my car detailed during the concert? Seth is just leaving money sitting there to appease some poor contingency.

I dunno. One of the most rock'n'roll things I've seen is at the beginning of "Crossfire Hurricane" when the Stones are about to play MSG in 1972 and Mick snorts coke off a switchblade. Rock'n'roll exists in different forms in different venues, whether it's in front of 200 people or 20,000. I'm not expecting GREATNESS from the 'Mats. I'm hoping to see something memorable...even if it's not brilliant. How many people show up doesn't matter to me. Iggy and the Stooges at Lollapalooza was still one of the most rock'n'roll things I've ever seen. I had a chance to see the 'Mats in 1991 at the Aragon in Chicago but it was for Northwestern students only and I couldn't finagle a ticket...I still think I'd rather see this incarnation anyway. As long as beer is served, I suspect people will have a good time.

Oh I'm not putting it down. I will be there, I will valet my car, and I expect (hope) that it's a rockin' good time both on and off stage. It will just be different from the sloppy drunken hootenanny a la Trax (C'ville) circa 1987. I'm really putting myself down more for the fact that my concert attending decisions are now heavily influenced by logistical factors such as parking.
-
ggw, I can totally empathize. The more you've been around and seen hundreds upon hundreds of concerts, the easier it is to say "I may skip this one". I've never seen the 'Mats...to say I saw them would be cool, even if it's not the same thing as seeing them in the 80's. I'm happy I saw the Ramones when I did in 1994. Was it a great show? Probably not. Did I enjoy the hell out of it? Maybe. Am I glad I went, even though they were probably a shadow of their former selves? Yes. I know it sounds contrived, but I was able to see part of music history...I wish I could have seen Keith Moon, even at the end. When I tell 20-somethings that I got to see Nirvana, their jaws drop. The reality was it could have been a better show. But I'm happy I went and saw it with my own eyes.

The question is, why isn't a gentlemen like yourself taking a private car to and from?

I strive not to lose the common touch.
Additionally, I have to pay the driver time-and-a-half after 9:00PM.

I second the car detailing option.... C'mon Seth, this is a great profit center...
-
I will be there, I will valet my car
ah, so you'll be taking the Maserati.
-
Judging by the other Replacements ticket listings already online, my guess is between $50-60 after service charges.
-
Waiting for when and what time.
Will go with a driver myself.
Never saw them back in the day, have seen them twice since reuniting (Riotfest and Forest Hills Stadium). Both great, but they are in my top tier. The Hold Steady opened at Forest Hills, that was so awesome I could barely stand it.
With just 13 shows announced, I think this will sell out quickly (also as a Friday show). But I guess incorrectly much of the time.
-
I agree that this probably won't be transcendent but I can't imagine a Replacements show being boring or slow.
Fortunately being a resident of the Lincoln Park neighborhood, I think Echostage is reachable by bike.
-
lets cut to the chase and stop babbling about inanities: when do tickets go on sale and how much?
No seriously, can someone please answer this?? ;D
-
I can't get in to the official website concerts page right now, but when I looked yesterday, five of the 13 shows just announced go on sale this week. Presale for April show Thursday at 10, general sale Friday at 10. Presale for May dates next Thursday (Feb 19) and general sale Friday (Feb 20). All of the shows with sale dates listed are on Ticketmaster. Ticketfly has nothing at all for Replacements right now.
DC was not in the group with sale dates listed, though I know some folks who think all the shows will go on sale the same week.
That noted, I am on the email list but have not gotten an email about even the show announcements. So, I'm skeptical I'll get presale info on a timely basis.

Been on their email list since day one. Worthless.

echostage = ticketmaster

Interesting -- IMP show, but sold through Ticketmaster.

I think that's the case (or at least it was) also for DAR and others?

sure...all MPP shows too!

on sale 2/20
presale 2/19 at 10 am.
I imagine it's an IMP presale and presale info on Wednesday's email blast
$64.95 is the listed price on Ticketmaster. Add at $4 for order processing and another $2.50 if you want a hardstock ticket.
-
man that is expensive

probably closer to $80?
-
probably closer to $80?
Just looking at other events through Echostage on Ticketmaster, it looks like the "Ticketing fee" is built into the 64.95 but the $4 "Order Processing Fee" (per order, not per ticket) and the $2.50 for hardstock tickets (instead of free Willcall/Print-At-Home) are not.
So, right at $70.
-
The ticket price makes sense:
"Recently divorced and without a steady income, Westerberg humorously copped to his band?s financial worth during their set at the Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Ky. After referring to his crew as ?middle-age hobos,? he asked into the microphone, ?Hey buddy, can you spare a quarter of a million dollars??"

I NEVER begrudge anyone charging what people are willing to pay......seems silly not to in a way....just creates a bunch of scalpers..
BUT I have began the year off in a really miserly mood when it comes to spending money on concerts so I'm not sure what i'm going to do...
as I said before, to me this is not the Replacements but Westerberg with Tommy doing Replacements tunes....
glad they're doing it.....just not sure i'm going to pay $70 for a general admission ticket..
heck i'd rather pay $100 for a seat within the first 10 rows and then just stand the entire time..
-

You should reach out to your contacts that always hook you up with VIP treatment.

So this really is a "hobo show"!

So this really is a "hobo show"!
K-Tel is putting out two new compilations- I shit you not- the first is called "Yatch Rock" nad the second is "Hobo Rock"....
-
Ticket price itself doesn't bother me. Shelling out all the extra dough for high priced parking or uber is the problem.
Can you get IMP tix at the box office? Not saving a lot by going there, I guess.
-
will probably sell out fast

I missed that golden age...I did get a few perks...
I knew hutch in the Iron age of concert going

will probably sell out fast
What is capacity for this?
I went to the NYC show last fall, and tickets were not immediately sold out, and were readily available for face value day of show online.
-
Southern - most east coast show may draw some in. But I'm not sure it's an immediate sell out.
-
Not sure it's worth the gamble tho.

They played Atlanta last summer. Hard to gauge the level of interest. A lot of us old fogies traveled for the previous festival shows.
I am an obsessive though, so I will try to go to DC and Philly. I am glad I did not spring for London or Spain/Portugal.
-
SF sold out in 10 minutes. I know cause I tried for a friend...they're playing a 3000 capacity venue there.
-
I can't believe we're debating shelling out $70 to see a bucket list show...
-
^tru dat
-
I can't believe we're debating shelling out $70 to see a bucket list show...
I don't believe its a bucket list show... it would be if Bob and Chris were there..or even Slim
but Paul with Tommy? That is not the Replacements
Moreover, I saw Tommy at Iotas a few years back for like $10 and it was great.. he even got on top of the bar and sang "waitress in the sky", signed my Let it Be album, et
basically what we're seeing here is a Paul Westerberg show with Tommy doing Replacements tunes...
sorry for the reality check... if it was the Replacements $70 would be well worth it...
-
I mean I don't know..at this point Paul hasn't toured in like over a decade? 15 years?
He's certainly worth at least $50 to me...by himself...
like I said I'm just feeling stingy these days when it comes to shelling out for concert tickets... we all go through it once in a while..
-
Pleased to Meet Me tour is going to have to be enough for me in this lifetime.
-
missing bob is big....but he is dead...so can't really do much about that
Hardly think this is a coverband and don't agree with your logic
Now seeing Tommy along and thinking you are seeing the replacements...well that is not at all the same and I surely wouldn't pay 70$ for that
-

well.... you're the "unabashed Mats evangelist"... not sure about your credibility....
I think seeing Tommy solo is like seeing Paul and Tommy together except you get one guy instead of two...
either way its not the Mats.... no Chris... no Slim.....no Bob.....
some people think its the Who with Daltrey and Townshend but no Moon or Ox.....
it may be an enjoyable show but it ain't the Who....
-
I mean are All Shook Down and Don't Tell a Soul Replacements albums?
-
^ok ....you got me there....I don't consider those really replacements albums
From what I've seen and heard they put on a hell of a show
I still don't think it's as big as missing Entwistle and Moon
-
Pleased to Meet Me tour is going to have to be enough for me in this lifetime.
The show at the Bayou was great. Enjoyed every Mats show I saw, even after Chris quit.
It's clearly not the same thing now. The solo shows aren't either. And $70 is really steep for this (not to mention what it'll cost to park over there). But I'll definitely go.
-
Can we all agree that whether or not this constitutes "The Replacements" or $70 is worth it, Hutch is an unmitigated asshole, just in general?
-

I always thought you were the forum asshole Julian....not to mention resident creep... Lets remember that this is the guy who wrote: "Thatguy could not stand me. He told me I could come back "over his dead body." I returned the day he died."

I think we need a poll to settle this.

Bayou was a great show. The show is here: http://replacementslivearchive.blogspot.com/2013/09/july-29-1987-bayou-washington-dc.html
At $70 plus whatever parking costs, this will be (for me) the least expensive Replacements show of the reunion cash-grab iteration of the band so I am beyond thrilled that it is at Echo (and not DAR or Merriweather).
-
I am beyond thrilled that it is at Echo (and not DAR or Merriweather).
I'll drink to that as well...how much it would have sucked at either one of those venue (IMHO)
-
Edith Piaf played DAR at least twice..
I was shocked by that...
-
A couple years ago they were one of 3 bands that I was thinking I'd like to see get together and tour again. I'd think of going, but I'm not going to break my neck over it. I've never been to Echostage, but I hear it's a pain to park there, and I gather it's not near metro. And at least I've seen them once, way back when, at the Bayou.

for the record, it's really not that hard to get to?
a block off of NY Ave on Bladensburg road
no metro right there
but from their site:
Free shuttle will be provided to and from the New York Avenue Metro stop (Red Line).
Pickup is at M Street side of the NoMa Metro stop.
Last shuttle to the metro leaves at 2:30am on weekend (fri-sat) night shows.
also, I found parking fairly easy
But as the guy at the Capitol ballroom once told me
'over here, it's park and pay. over there, it's park and pray'
Don't think I've ever owned a car less than 7 years old, so I don't mind praying

Superchunk are opening the Philly show.
-
so did anyone get the presale link?
f'n IMP email blasts hate me
-
relax, they send it Wednesday nights

Superchunk are opening the Philly show.
And J Roddy
Hoping Superchunk is on the DC bill.
Found a path to some $150 VIP tix for Philly...
-
my apologies if i offended anyone other than sidehatch... ;D...my very good friend is dying of cancer and its been really hard...
good luck to everyone getting tickets tomorrow!
-
Jon Wurster says he's juggling dates between Superchunk and Mountain Goats. I think he's trying to make it work, but it's not official. Replacements and Superchunk would be a guaranteed sellout.
-
Mac from Superchunk is playing Richmond the same night as Replacements in DC so I don't see Superchunk happening.

Jon Wurster will be in Atlanta on the 8th with the Mountain Goats: his facebook says: "Jonny is playing in Atlanta, GA with the Mountain Goats at Shaky Knees on the 8th, people. I try my best to please you."
So, if you are a superchunk fan, just see Mac at the BlackCat on the 7th, Mats in DC on the 8th, and Mats and Superchunk in Philly on the 9th.

Cherish.
I have one. Boink, too. Went Rockville Kemp Mill to buy Let it Be and found that instead. Good version of Can't Hardly Wait on there among the slop.
Thanks to challenged for that Bayou link. Already have that show but I need to go back and see if any others shows of interest are there. Not sure any boot will beat Live at Lingerie, though.
-
presale password in email blast
-
i'm worried...demand could be trouble...
-
personally I'm not going to do it
but if you get a "vip table' it includes the tickets
I almost got one for Belle & Sebastain (but then my CFO put the kia-bosh on that)
but the pricing was: 6 person table was $130 per person and that included the ticket
(the B&S was a $50 ticket and the Mats are $70)
So possibly $150 per person
but that also includes about as much as you can drink
although a bottle is $250....but $80 per person is going to bottle service and tax and tip (which they automatically include)
I think 6 is the minimum (possibly 8)
I have no idea how that works out on sold out shows, but you don't get a paper ticket
So if you think you want to do that... I'd go on the echostage site and send an email to ben about the table service
---
quite possibly the most un-replacements like activity to get a $150 ticket and sit in a chair....but some people might want to do that to avoid the screaming mimis
-
That was easy.
-
ack...10 seconds in and saying no seats available!
-
I got mine without an issue.
-
I got nothing
-
no luck
-
Success!
-
WFT is my deal with tickets....I was on there the second it turned 10 with my code and everything
F'n internet!
-
Fail. But, I'm not worried about tomorrow.
-
Shut out. 90 available on Stubhub, of course.
-
Anyone think I'm crazy for not worrying about the general sale?
-
I'm going to take Bag's optimism this morning with my cup of joe and make peace with the world
but heads will roll if I don't get tickets tomorrow
F'n ticketbastard!
-
Not good on my end. I have a 10am mtg tomorrow. This might've been my only shot.
-
Anyone think I'm crazy for not worrying about the general sale?
I wasn't worried about the presale. Pretty worried now!
-
Wow, seriously?? I really didn't anticipate it being that tough. Sorry I didn't grab more tickets. I'm guessing though that people won't have too many issues in general sale though.
-
<feels like pondscum>
generally the presale is the easier option... at least that is what i've found...but maybe this was a small presale...
-
so for those keeping score we have 3 got tickets and 5 failed
we can look forward to another long post from JohnQ about what the Replacements mean to him on the Exchange thread...
-
It very well may have been a very small presale. We had four people trying and only one got tix. And we all were on it right away.
I'll go stubhub route if necessary, so I'm not freaking. I do think public sale will be okay. That blast email goes to SO many folks, it's not like a fan club presale.
-
I tried and got nothing. A few friends tried too and didn't get any either. :'(
will try again tomorrow.
btw, the Echostage twitter the other day said the pre-sale was sold out. I'm guessing that was a different pre-sale?
-

That's what I'm hoping. I tried like crazy to get tickets and couldn't get a single thing. I can't stand ticketmaster. But seriously, I hope it was one of those small selection of tickets and tomorrow will be much easier. Especially since I decided to be late for work this morning thinking I'd get tickets. I don't have internet access at work aside from my phone. Any word on how decent ticketmaster's app is? I'm scared to use it. Hence why I thought I'd take a chance of being late to work to get these tickets today.
I also got an odd theory that maybe there will be tickets available later today or something. I swear you'd be surprised by what gets stuck in the system.

LOL

hopefully they didn't sell all tickets like some presales do...
-
i am among the lucky few. the presale code was on the replacements fan facebook page(s) last night. My guess is that only around 500 tickets went onsale in the presale.
-
saintanglesin, we've had better success with the Ticketmaster app than we have online, even folks who were at their desks at work with fantastic internet access. So don't discount your chances! I think it was the Foo Chicago show, the only folks who got field tickets were using the App.

I used the app on my iphone to get the presale tickets. tried simultaneously on my work computer and got nothing. Also, no "Captcha" BS on the app.
-
It was never this hard to get tickets to see them back in the day.
-
well u got scalpers trying too so that makes it harder
-
Wasn't the ticket limit 8? That's a lot for a presale.

well, for the scoreline i only count 930 Forumers...

I'm really surprised there were this many misses. Must be a very small proportion of the tickets.

We had four people trying. Nobody got a single ticket.

The real question is can anyone on here assist me in getting Westerberg's autograph for a platonic female friend of mine?

fuck your autograph and your dog..
some of us don't even have tickets yet!

so for those keeping score we have 3 got tickets and 5 failed
we can look forward to another long post from JohnQ about what the Replacements mean to him on the Exchange thread...
Guess again, jockomo. I didn't do it before and I'm not going to do it now. You have cleared one thing up, though - my cynicism about your motives is fully justified.
Also, since you apparently do not speak English as a first language, I suggest you look up the word "another" in the dictionary.

John, don't mind hutch. He's the grumpy, drink counting, elder statesmen of the board. He's having a rough week.

is it possible J has a whole community of aliases to friend his fake friends?

If someone registers an account on here claiming to be -- oh, I dunno -- Joe Biden, the mere fact that Joe Biden is a real person with a real social media account is not proof that the forum account claiming to be Joe Biden is actually Joe Biden.

Team,
I'm dying to go to this show, but I'll be in the middle of work project tomorrow morning and won't have access to a computer. If anyone can grab me a ticket, I'll pay you back immediately. Message me if you're willing - much appreciated.
Also, I'll throw in a beer or two. Or three. After all, it's The Replacements.

I'm guessing most (if not all) will get in today...as long as you don't wait.

easy pickens.

not for me.. and i was on it..
sorry betao
-
very easy....although it took a really long time to get everything going
the page didn't refresh to go right to the onsale
my phone app still is trying to connect
the presale made me very nervous
-
damn...sold out!
There might be a lot of people with tickets in their carts from phones/other browsers
I'd keep trying hard for the next 30 mins
-
i tried again with a different browser and got ONE (i downscaled my order to a mere one thinking i'd have a better shot than my original goal of 3)
sorry betao
i have to be off my computer and go out.. could someone try to get betao a ticket?

Wow, maybe this needed to be at Merriweather. Did not see this selling out this quick.

I got tickets and might have an extra. will post here as soon as I know if I have an extra.

Why? Don't people generally have a much higher impression of MPP than Echostage?

Took my computer 30 seconds to load up. While that was searching for a pair I went onto my phone app. Computer ultimately struck out but the app pulled a pair.
What a mess.

I love MPP. Surprised folks here don't all agree in its awesomeness.

Love it as well. The people who don't like it usually are the ones that don't have the flexibility to get there easily or live in VA.

I just don't like outdoor shows, seats and big venues
plus there are a lot of Marylanders there and ...they kind of smell rancid
-
I may have extras. Both Heady Topper and Replacements tixwise.
-
Anyone in for Philly? Tix still available.
-
I got myself a ticket for Philly as well, since I'll be heading home that weekend to AC for Mother's Day.
It's OFFICIAL, I have one extra ticket for DC. I'd like to offer it up here.
It's an e-ticket.

ticketmaster is such a disgrace.. yesterday during the presale the captcha was having me type shit like "I really want to go!" and such.. what the fuck? while telling me it was sold out!!!!!!!!! that's just low.
-
I know, the phrases in the captcha were really annoying
I did see that ticketmaster also has Ticketnow
which is there version of stub hub
and there are lots of tickets there from 105-222
I know it's just business/supply&demand stuff
but I really hate scalpers and scalping
I've been able to see shows due to it in the past, but was pissed that I had too

I tried using the app and it gave me a spinning circle for 10 mins while I was purchasing my ticket on the web. I refreshed and tried again, gave me a catpcha to only tell me there were no more tix left

no, I just think there's a better chance of getting tickets using the app.
or, it could be that there's a better chance of tickets using the app because they set aside some specifically for it and fewer people are using it??.... it's certainly a possibility.... LiveNation has presales on their app where you don't even need a presale code, you just have to USE the app..... whatever the reason, it worked out for me..... now, what's the Echostage like??.... I've heard it's basically a big warehouse....

I sure haven't been going to shows, my concert attendance has been pretty sparse the last couple of years.....

so its just Paul playing guitar and Tommy playing bass? I thought Paul mangled his hand in an accident?
no drummer?
what are the odds on this show not happening....when was the last time they played that many shows within a month of each other???
I note the night before is open... they could add a show...if they wanted the money badly enough....

they did this in L.A., added a show on Apr 15th after the 16th sold out.....

I note the night before is open... they could add a show...if they wanted the money badly enough....
Usually when bands do this -- and ESPECIALLY when IMP does this -- the less-appealing date goes on sale first and the more appealing date is only announced after the less appealing show is sold out. Very un-IMP like for the Friday to go on-sale first and leaving a Thursday potentially unsold out. (Have you ever seen an early show at the club announced AFTER the late show?)

yes..I think its unlikely..if they added a show they'd have to play like 5 nights straight.... I don't see it...
just saying it is possible..
-
.... when you think about it, it'd probably easier on them to schedule another show after Philly than shove another DC date in between Columbus and the DC date that's on the books now.... adding a thursday show would give 4 shows in 4 days, and looking at their schedule, they don't ever have more than 2 shows in a row.... at least not yet..... perhaps Paul's voice needs a day or so every once in awhile to recover?

Yeah, it's "possible" they add another but they're clearly not going to.
-
see this is why we need kubacheck around here...he makes sense.. .why have one sandwich when you have two sandwiches?
-
I have never, in my years of looking at concert listings, seen a non-local band play in Town X, then play in Town Y the next night, only to return to Town X the night after (or with a day off) to play another show as he proposes. Its absurd for a ton of reasons.
-

exactly....
-
you see you cannot eat a sandwich that big... just like you can't play that many consecutive nights.. .but if you're a bit less greedy and you divide your lunch meats and bread you can have TWO perfectly good sandwiches and its much more satisfying....
-

I was not proposing they do that, just that it'd probably make more sense than coming straight from Columbus and thus playing 4 shows in a row......... Philly is a lot closer to DC than Columbus is, and Philly is also the last night of the tour, seems like IF they wanted to, they could add another show, drive, what 120 miles, and do another show here...... not proposing it, just saying that would make more sense than shoehorning a thursday show in after playing Columbus the night before..... also, I have seen artists play a town and come back later on the same tour..... for one, one year, Stephen Stills played the Birchmere, then a week later played the Ramshead.... then the next night played the Birchmere again and then came back to the Rams Head the following night....
-

thanks Kubacheck.... good with the facts as always...

on the other hand, Stephen Stills was a good example of why you don't overextend yourself with all those added shows if your vocal chords have a lot of mileage on them.... I went to that first Birchmere show, he sounded great.... just a week later at the Ramshead, his voice was already shot, he was struggling all night..... when he actually HIT the high note in "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", the crowd cheered and he responded by saying "I know, I'm surprised too!!!".....
-
True, the Philly show is outdoors at Penn's Landing, directly on the river. The weather could suck. As I recall the Radiohead show from a few years ago, the one out at the Lube -- the one with the torrential all-night-long rainstorm -- was on Mothers Day weekend. May 9 could still be a bit early for outdoor evening shows. Guess we'll find out.
-
^ venue also has a 10 pm or 11 pm curfew...which could lead to a shorter set w/ 2 openers
-
Hey gang, just want to thank Bluflower for offering her ticket to me and thank you to hutch for looking out for me. I really appreciate it and thanks to you guys it looks like I'll be able to go to the show.
If anyone else is trying to buy on stubhub or ebay, just wait it out till the prices drop. Everyone will be able to get in.

That's funny. Reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Barney brings a keg to Homer's BBBQ (the extra B is for BYOB) and then asks Homer where he can have it filled.

I'd LOVE to go to Philly as Superchunk is opening. But, wedding in DC on Saturday night, so I'm glad to be going to the Echostage show (thanks Tooms; my computer running slow screwed me up even in the general sale, though I wasn't worried as I figured I'd know folks who got tix, and I've done that for others often).

I'm looking to unload one ticket to this for either face value or a trade for one for Philly.

Do we know who is opening this show yet?
-
so while looking at Craig Finn's page I came across that he's helping out with the Songs For Slim project (which I think is a great cause, great way to do it and I have helped out too )
Craig is participating in a project with New West Records to raise money for former Replacements guitarist, Slim Dunlap, who suffered a severe stroke last year. Currently up for auction is 7" single with Steve Earle doing Slim's "Times Like This" backed with Craig Finn doing Slim's "Isn't It."
A varied group of artists have joined forces to record Slim's songs and release them on a series of limited edition 45s; artists ranging from Lucinda Williams to Jakob Dylan, Frank Black, Deer Tick, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and The Jayhawks among others. A strictly limited number of 100 singles by each artist are being auctioned once per month.
The project was launched in January with 250 copies of a brand new Replacements 10" EP which brought in a staggering total of $106,750.92 in bids.
So my point is....seems like this last two years of touring has ...I'd have to imagine ...made over a million for the replacements?
I would think at this point, the band could chip in considerably to help out here?
-
Didn't their record net over $100k to the cause?
-
Do we know who is opening this show yet?
Less than 30 days out...anything on this Seth?

Although to be totally honest....I think the plan is to go to Atlas brewery and drink a growler in one sitting and then walk into Echostage as the curtain drops (https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=701447863298862) ... unless the opener is The Rock Cats
I'm a little concerned my expectations are a little high, but I anticipate this being the show of the year for me
-
But not because of the opener.....
I will say of all the openers for Mats shows I attended, Fresh Young Fellows were my favorite.

I saw Tommy Keane open for them in 1989 or 90.

just got back from LA, saw last nights show at the Palladium..... pretty epic, if not a little short.... played probably 80 minutes or so, but they did squeeze 24 songs in there.... it was a little surprising because the Palladium's website said they were going to play from 9:15 to 11:30, so when they walked off after an hour, I thought they were fucking with us... instead they came back for two encores and finished up at about 10:45.... still a great show and we got a killer opening set from John Doe!!

Lets face it though...LA and NYC always tend to get the better shows and guests because the national media is there so they go the extra mile...

I got an email from Bandsintown last night that said J Roddy Walston & The Business were playing at Echostage on Friday, May 8th. Are they opening the show now? That's pretty sweet news if so.

man scooped by bandsintown....can't believe the sleuths on here didn't figure that out

I do remember some asking J Rod on Facebook a while back if there was any chance of them being added to the DC show & he straight out said nope... one night only deal.

for those who might want a tshirt, this is front/back views of the "tour specific" shirt that'll probably be sold at the merch table..... there were a couple of other shirts, but this was the only one had the tour info on it... at least at the L.A. gig, anyway.....

Nice. Any other tour specific stuff for sale?
they had a couple of concert posters specific for each of the two nights at the Palladium since there were different opening acts for each show, looked like they were hand drawn.... didn't notice anything else tour related, but perhaps I could've missed something, I wasn't at the table very long.... but there were other t-shirts (I think one was a "Pleased To Meet Me" shirt, and perhaps a "Tim"?) and a sweatshirt or hoody, I think.....

so how is this show not sold out?
what's the size of that venue?
they even got Superchunk on the bill....
There are just a few tickets left for the last U.S. date of the Back by Unpopular Demand tour in Philadelphia on May 9, with Superchunk and J Roddy Walston and The Business.

It's a pretty sizable venue (6,500 people)....a lot of tickets to sell. It was one of the few that didn't go fast. If the tickets had been $35 instead of $55 (or $60 or whatever) it would be totally sold out. Philly isn't a particularly expensive city and I'm sure some folks on the fence were put off by the ticket price.

Does anyone know general set times at Echostage?
-
the day of the show 930 will list it on their home page
but I'm guessing that the mats will hit the stage around 9-9:30

2 extra for DC :)
1 extra for Philly ???
FACE (including fees) :o
PM me please :-X

Wow, I am a thread killer.
Tickets sold and remain very excited for Friday and Saturday! anyone? no one? Bagley?

So has there been a boardie meet-up discussed?
I'm coming up to the show solo and wouldn't mind getting a drink or snack before the gig.

There's valet parking? Damn, I started thinking about logistics too late. May go with the Atlas Brew plan, or pandaparking. Thanks all!
-
I love this board. For $6 I've got a reserved space in a lot .3 miles away. Uber, you can suck it! [I have seen the Mats twice on the recent touring jag, been quite inebriated for both, so looking forward to some sober appreciation.]
-
Pittsburgh show tonight postponed due to illness
-
. May go with the Atlas Brew plan
That's my plan...parking over there should be a breeze
there is a giant cemetery, so none of the current occupants need those spaces
that illness comment has me concerned!

Probably just a hangover. Plus they've got 3 full days to get over it. I'm sure it'll be fine. This ain't Morrissey.
-
Parking Panda doesn't have squat left. There is an $11 option but they close at 11:59.
Not a problem if the Mats are on by 9:30, I guess.

I'm in the lot that closes at midnight....I think that should be fine. I hope it should be fine.

Dumb question, what the hell is up with parking? I'm not that tech savy. I looked at parking panda and saw something within walking distance for 11 bucks, but the parking doesn't open until 6 pm. I was seriously thinking about taking the day off to just get down there early and look like a total fan girl. I've hung out with Tommy and his wife before, so I figured maybe they'd be outside after a soundcheck and I'd get in early or something ha. But seriously, Is parking panda something worth trusting? I wasn't even sure if I would get a last minute ticket. Luckily someone has a spare to sell me.
It's puny to say but I've got the night club jitters. Never been to Echo Stage and I'm coming all the way from Frostburg.
-
I don't get whats wrong with parking on the street?
-
BTW Parking Koala is still showing spaces available and closes at 1 am.
-
I don't get whats wrong with parking on the street?
I've never been in that neighborhood. So is there street parking? (I feel so stupid at the moment) I should also mention, i'm going solo to this gig. So yeah anyone who wants to meet up, let me know.
-
I'm in the lot that closes at midnight....I think that should be fine. I hope it should be fine.
I'm in that lot too.... I guess it might depend on how long they play.... at the other show on this tour that I went to, they were listed on the venues website as playing from 9:15-11:30... the reality at that show was actually 9:20-10:40.....
-
I'm in that lot too with $5 off. So $6 is worth it to me than rahter than possibly having to search for parking.
-
I got lucky when we went to Alt-J and found street parking just a few blocks from there
but close to the club is tough
There are at 5 different places to park (pay parking) with in a few blocks of the club
I think if you are willing to walk a few block and park over by Atlas Brewery you should be fine
but I don't plan on driving as I plan on drinking my fill (at Atlas)
-
Anybody have any experience with the Lemur lot? Its $15...

Hey now! I'm 29 going on 30. I guess that does make me old? ha.
On a side note, I get the sinking feeling I could be one of the younger people in the crowd. Growing up, I never knew anyone in or around my age group who knew of the Replacements. It was an older friend who got me hooked in middle school (he was a college radio dj and played them a lot on his show) and as a teen, it felt like the-best-thing-nobody-ever-heard-of-but-me kind of thing. (Seriously, I went to Warped Tour in 2000, saw Greenday do a cover of Achin' To Be and I'm pretty sure I was the only kid in the crowd going nuts) It wasn't until I got to University of Maryland that I met people around my age who at least knew of the band.
Either way, I'm prepared to have serious fun Friday night.

One of my high school math teachers gave this bit of sage advice every Friday: party in carpools. This was long before anybody had heard the term "designated driver" but that was what he advocated, from experience. If parking around Echo for a sold out show is as difficult as the past two pages make it out to be, listen to Mr. Brune.

Uh-oh Pitt and Columbus rescheduled
The good news is that Paul is getting better, but the bad news is that he's still too under the weather to pull off tomorrow's show in Columbus. So, it's with heavy consideration and regret that we need to postpone that show as well. He's resting up for the DC and Philly shows this weekend and everybody's looking forward to getting back out there. Sitting around in hotel rooms is boring.
Pittsburgh and Columbus - we are truly sorry and are working overtime to figure out how and when we can come back and make this all up to you. Hold on to your tickets in the meantime, and you'll be able to use them then.
If you can make it to Philadelphia this Saturday, there are still some tickets left for our show at Festival Pier.
Regretfully Yours,
The Replacements

got a ticket to both DC & Philly shows.
I'm more than likely taking metro for Friday night.
Still not sure how I'm getting to Philly since my car is sidelined until I can find money to fix it.
My friends were due to open the show tonight in Columbus. They've set up a last minute show at a local club so they'll still play, but I was pretty psyched for them to open for The Replacements.
hope Paul is well enough for this weekend!

for this show, would not, the more appropriate question be . . . will there be power scooter valet?

18 pages, going for a record
although we did spend a lot time talking about parking
there really should be a parking thread

;D ;D ;D
It is for me...
I've seen just about every band that I've been a fan of if it's possible
but besides maybe the Clash (did catch joe strummer and he did do a bunch of clash tunes), the Dead Kennedy's and Rollins Black Flag (I'm sure there are a few others)....the Mats have always been on my list of regrets of bands I never got to see live. Plus always hearing about their legendary and infamous live show always made it that much worse
Let it be, Tim and Pleased to Meet Me are such a good trifecta of albums
soo many good songs and memories listening to them on my Walkman or watching the label spinning on my turntable
The replacements were always on of those bands that just spoke to me
I'm so pleased they decided to do this tour
Sounds like these shows are much better than any show I would have caught in the early 90s anyway
shame won't get to see Bob or Chris or Slim
but honestly Paul and Tommy are enough
I think Josh Freese and Dave Minehan will be great and I'm fine with that
-
^^^ I saw them earlier this tour, went in with kinda high expectations, and they did not disappoint (other than perhaps the fact that they played about 45 minutes less than the Palladium's website said they'd play).....

I don't know how you can blame the band on that one
they don't tell the venue...were going to play a 2 hour set and they post it

saw this great quote and wanted to share
?According to veteran producer Jim Dickinson (Ry Cooder, Big Star, as well as the Replacements? Pleased to Meet Me), ?Westerberg is the brains of the band, but Tommy is the balls. The fire, the energy I keyed on was Tommy. He and Chris are a great rhythm section, just fabulous. Tommy?s this great existential hero, which is a rare breed nowadays. Every morning or afternoon, Tommy wakes up and decides wherer or not he wants to be Tommy. His brother Bob used to force him to play the bass when he was a little kid. If he didn?t he?d get backhanded, so Tommy hates the bass, but he loves it too. It?s that fight beteen the positive and the negative that creates the tension that makes great music. The Stones had it [Dickinson played keyboards on Sticky Fingers] and so do the Replacements.? When I ask Westerberg if he agrees that Tommy is the balls of the group, he remarks, ?Tommy?s the balls and the dick.??
-
also, here is another track just came across You're Getting Married (Solo Home Demo) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMWWSxC6e9w)
apparently it was on the 2008 rerelease of stink (bootlegs were out too)
f'n awesome
this little write up (http://oneweekoneband.tumblr.com/tagged/the_replacements/chrono) is great too
The Replacements - ?You?re Getting Married? (Solo Home Demo)
Unsurprisingly, Paul Westerberg?s hardest critics were the other guys in the band. He wrote all of the songs and had to deal with three different personalities and tastes: Tommy Stinson wanted something modern, Bob Stinson wanted something that rocked, and Chris Mars wanted something poppy. (Fuck anything heartfelt, it went without saying.) The first response after Westerberg played the band an early version of ?You?re Getting Married? in 1982 was a terse Bob Stinson one-liner: ?Save it for your solo album; that ain?t The Replacements.?
It?s a diss that would prove laughably hindsighted: on pretty much every album after their debut, The Replacements effortlessly (as in they didn?t seem to care) switched identities. They?d sing about abused drag queens and nightmarish trips to the dentist, cover KISS for the hell of it, mix up country and jazz and piano balladry with no obvious sense of cohesion. To wit: two of the most heartfelt songs on their 1984 breakthrough Let It Be, ?Sixteen Blue? and ?Answering Machine,? are preceded by the comically shitty ?Gary?s Got A Boner,? a song as stupid as its title and seemingly thrown in to remind listeners, "Hey, we?re still idiots.? But at the beginning, they were easier to pigeonhole: a latter-day Lester Bangs article on the second generation of punk bands (in which he labeled the Circle Jerks as the best) lumped The Replacements as just another hardcore band. So punks expecting to hear the next ?I Hate Music? might?ve been shocked by the tenderness of ?You?re Getting Married,? which floated around as a bootleg for years before popping up on 2008?s reissue of the Stink EP.
Criticize Westerberg?s lyrics in this one?I?m not going to defend ?You?re like a bird in a cage? as a metaphor for being trapped?but don?t harsh on his passion, that nebulous quality music critics spend thousands of words trying to quantify while fans get it right off the bat. The pain of a punk brat moaning one line over and over, accompanied only by the pangs of an electric guitar less played than smacked: ?If you get married, please don?t get married, don?t you get married,? over and over again. Stinson was right to be doubtful at first; who would believe this coming from the guy who?d written a song called ?Fuck School?? Could you believe him?
It?s too bad that it was never officially released, as Replacements fans would quickly acclimate to Westerberg?s sensitive side following their sophomore record, 1983's Hootenanny. It contained ?Within Your Reach,? the band?s sweetest song to date and one so sensitive that Westerberg didn?t even tell his bandmates he was recording it?Mars accidentally found out about the session and had to force his way on. From there on, The Replacements would mature rapidly with each record, and a complaint like Stinson?s??That ain?t The Replacements??would be met with, ?Well, what is?? But naturally, ?Within Your Reach? is followed by ?Buck Hill,? a hokey, cornfed rhythm punctuated every few moments with the nonsensical cry, ?BUCK HILL!? Maturity is a process. - Jeremy Gordon

not blaming the band at all, just noting the discrepancy between the posted set times and the actual set time, that's all.... as I said, they did not disappoint, I'll take 80 minutes of the excellent show I got over a 2 hour shitty show, anyday..... besides, old man that I am, in the end, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get out of a show earlier than I thought I would.... :)

If there was ever a show I'm glad I only paid half the face price for, that one was it. Though I'm sure to be humming that song about protein shakes at Whole Foods for days.
I'll give Paul Westerbird some credit though, he's got more hair and is less pear than most of his fans.
I honestly couldn't figure out if (I'm not going to call a 50 year old man "Tommy") Tom Stintin Guns and Roses was the guy in the red shirt or the guy in the official LPGA tour visor.
Oh, and the German chocolate cake/vanilla ice cream/ Parabola pairing was totally fucking sweet.
-
I enjoyed the performance, but the audience was unbearable. It was uncomfortably crowded.
-
Agree it was a bit crowded. Didn't think the sound was great, either.
Enjoyed the show nonetheless.
-
I had a great time, a little hectic getting there because I snagged my tickets after 7 this evening in the "last hour on stubhub seller price panic stage" haha so I was able to grab a pair for $48 (had I held out a few minutes longer someone dropped the price on a pair to 27.50 (not each...for the fucking PAIR...oh well haha) but then had to head straight to Echostage. I wouldn't have been satisfied for $80 given my cramped spot in the back but for $24 no problem.
-
More like EcNOStage. It was like a shittier Nation.
-
I was up front. Met some really nice people from DC, Richmond, and Florida. One of my new "friends," a girl from Richmond who was there with her dad, had just turned 21, and so another of these folks, went to the bar, and brought back shots for all 6 of us to celebrate.
JRoddy seemed like a good performance, but the vocals were a muddy mess.
The Replacements sounded great and are having such a good time, and that happiness is contagious.
AND
There was a young guy, mid-20s, who was quiet and still for the 2 hours until the Replacements came on and then he was crazy dancing guy, with a faux hawk of some sort, and he twice poured a water bottle on his head and then shook his mane like a dog drying itself...all over everyone. He never said a word the entire night.
That was fucked up, but his dancing and doglike behavior seemed to come from a place of joy, and not anger or booze, so okay...tolerable.
Then there were the aggressively drunk asshole 55 year old (or so) dudes who were so drunk that they had lost verbal skills: all they could seem to utter was "our in the seeet for a leeevin" (the opening phrase to Kiss' Black Diamond, covered by the Mats on Let it Be in 1984). Were they pushing and shoving, or had they lost control of motor skills? Probably a combination of both.
One such asshole was such a fuckmonster that security eventually (way too late) shined a light into his face and compelled him to come to the barrier where he then was lifted over and out, much to everyone's relief.
Then, within about 30 seconds, he was back with us, moshing/falling into everyone. The crowd gestured to security, and he again surrendered to them and was lifted over the barrier and we did not see him again. This was a grey-haired, Tommy Bahama-esque shirt wearing, needs to go into detox lawyer/banker looking guy. What the fuck.
I don't remember anything like this happening at the other Mats 3.0 shows I have attended.
Parking. Easy to get to, Clusterfuck to leave.
Overall, a memorable, if bruising, night of lunacy.
Gonna drive up to Philly a little later.
-
So despite how awful I thought Echostage was (it's probably fine...if you only go to like two shows a year or something), I'm super glad I went. It was great to hear a lot of those songs, but I also thought it was kind of a nice way to dispel the "myth" of the Replacements some.
I'm too young (that doesn't mean young, FYI) to have been into them in their original run or to have seen them. And for years listening to Hootenanny and Let It Be, you get used to what seems like throwaway tracks in some way. I mean, they couldn't have spent more than ten minutes writing and recording Treatment Bound, right? Then, on a reunion tour some twenty years after the split, out of all the songs they could pick, they bring that one out? That's great...and it kind of makes you get that for all of their "we don't' give a shit" attitude that they really did.
Then of course, then they rip into something like Color Me Impressed or Alex Chilton (definitely two songs in my top XX Songs of all Time List), and you're kind of floored at what a great songwriter Westerberg is.
And while we have this vision of the Replacements in the same way we think of bands like Husker Du, nothing sobers you up to realize they're just a rock n roll band than seeing what kind of dudes are into them. I mean, the crowd I was surrounded by would've fit in just fine on the golf course or at a DMB show. I might have seen my dad in the crowd.
I know I sound cynical, but that wasn't my takeaway. I left that show with a huge smile on my face, not just from the band, but also how happy the crowd was. yeah, it was too packed and not really my normal type of crowd, but they really had a blast. Band seemed to be having a ball too.
-
Also, I've only been to four shows so far this year I think (S/K, Ex Hex, Mac McCaughan and the Replacements) and I think collectively I've listened to these bands for like 66.5 years.
-
I reached my breaking point with the Tommy Bahama guy after he told me that I sucked, and needed to move to the back. Sadly, I allowed him to engage me when he said it, so I lost about 10 minutes yelling at home and pushing back as he leaned on me. Shouldn't have wasted the time by ignoring his idiocy, but he got to me.
Fun show. The sound wasn't great, but getting there and out was better than expected. A little overcrowded, but not uncomfortable after the a-hole moved to the front.

Awesome to hear everyone enjoyed the show
;D
-
Will add that the 1818 NY Ave parking lot ended up being the right move, at least for me. Easy walk back and was out on the road 5 minutes later. I fear the folks who parked at Echostage are still there.
J Roddy seem like a good band but the mix was horrid and they weren't a great fit, in my opinion.
i went without earplugs (dumb but i wanted to hear it as-is) and no ringing this morning. Low volume or nearly deaf....can't decide.
-
Also - I hate sing-a-long crowds.
-
Yeah I was clueless as to where to park but had half an hour to sort it out before the show so took a right on V St and parallel parked a quarter mile in or so, not a bad walk and wasn't too worried about the car since the block was primarily commercial buildings.

That was such a fun show. Many thanks again to K8tebug for getting me that ticket - I meant to hit you up beforehand but work consumed my life this week.
I thought they sounded great, and most of all, they were having an absolute blast on stage. Smiles and laughter the entire show, along what sounded like some drunken improvisation that you'd expect from the band. Highlights for me were Valentine, I Will Dare, and the entire encore. So much fun dancing in the corner where there was more space.
Show was very crowded; that was my first time at the Echostage, is it normally that packed for a sold out show? I saw the guy get pulled from the front row you were all talking about. Sorry he made it back a 2nd time.
Don't know where you guys were looking for parking... I arrived about 8:30, made a left on the street at the gas station, and found a couple of spots right away. Maybe a 3 minute walk.
-
enjoyable show.... this was my first time at the Echostage, and I only knew to expect a warehouse with a stage at one end.... seems like they did a nice job on it cosmetically, and the bathrooms were large and clean, something that should not be underestimated.... I didn't think the sound was all that great, I was DFC about halfway back on the floor, but I sometimes wonder if my ears are just shot from too many loud rock shows and can't process anything too loud anymore.... dunno.... I didn't have any problems with massive overcrowding/shoving/etc where I was, I've had much worse issues with that at sold out 930 Club shows where it really does sometimes feel like you're packed in a sardine can.... but it does sound like it was that way closer up for some of y'all.... being relatively close to the Rt 50/NY Ave entrance to the city, the location of Echostage is perfect for someone like me that's coming from that direction.... like a couple others have said, the decision to park at 1818 NY Ave was a good one, probably took about 10 minutes to get out of the lot, but was smooth sailing after that and I was home by midnight.... old man that I am, I regard that alone as a win anytime I make the jaunt to DC for a show..... :)
edited to add: I was expecting it to be ungodly hot in there with all those people packed in such a small space, but was pleasantly surprised to find out that they seem to have a kick-ass air conditioning unit, it was never uncomfortable and if you get there early enough, you can actually pick a spot under a vent (as I did) because as you walk around the floor, you can feel the spots where the vents were aimed, the air was blowing that hard.....
-
I had a lot of fun. The sound wasn't great, venue was pretty shitty ($12 Makers? A beer list that looked like an Ashburn Chili's?), and really packed . . . but it's the fucking Replacements! I feel like their energy really stepped up around "Seen Your Video" (which killed), and carried right through the epic encore.
The crowd appeared to have been teleported from a Wolf Trap John Fogerty concert. I was surprised at how few people were geeking out, especially up front.
I live 2 miles away, so don't have much to add to this impressively complete and nuanced parking and traffic discussion.
EDIT: like any nostalgia show, it wasn't a perfect setlist for me... would have really liked to have heard Unsatisfied, Androgynous, Talent Show, Sixteen Blue (which gives Big Star's Thirteen a run for its money), Here Comes a Regular, Anywhere's Better Than Here (maybe segued from Bastards of Young?)
-
LOVED the Philly show. I knew it was good when my sister's boyfriend saw Westerberg in our hotel bar ordering a dirty martini at 5:30pm and taking it up to his room. There was definitely a sloppier element to the Saturday show but in the 'Mats world, that can either be a good thing or a going-off-the-rails thing. It was definitely a good thing. I'm so incredibly glad I got to see two totally different shows. The one that I pick as superior was Philly, hands down. Plus we got to hear "Unsatisfied" and a totally spontaneous, unrehearsed version of "Hold My Life" that was brilliant. I wish I could say I had a better experience at Echostage, but I suspect that I may avoid it for some shows.
-
still recovering from the weekend.
loved the set at Echostage, but doubt I'll go back unless it's a must see show. the venue is nice enough for what it is: a dance venue. not great for a rock show.
last night in Philly was fantastic. such a great night outside and I got close enough to see which is no small task being 5'2.
I think I liked both nights equally set wise, but settled in a lot easier last night in Philly, perhaps it was due to Philly being a hometown of sorts for me. as soon as I could legally drive a car, I was driving up to Philly from AC to see bands.
only downside of the weekend for me was my car being out of commission. the almost 90 minute metro bus and rail to get to echostage (thankfully, a friend gave me a lift home after the show) and a 5 hour journey of buses, metro and megabus to philly put a big wrench in my plans. I working on about 3.5 hours sleep at the moment.
-
I feel I got out of this what I wanted, I did want a little more, but who am I to be so selfish
Parking:
- not an issue as ended up biking to my friend's place off bladensburg and just walked 1.5 miles
Preshow
-well neglected to realize that Atlas was closed at 8PM, but the time we were there it was pretty much time to get there
The venue
-Damn was it freaking packed, went to about 5 different spots on the stage left by the bar and it was just nuts. So many tall people too, must be that mid-west corn-fed thing. But that was annoying.
Ended up getting all the way down to the end of the bar and that wasn't easy to get somewhat of a good vantage point. But in general, when I pay close to $70 for a ticket, I would really like to see the band. Not sure why the stage isn't up about 4 feet higher, but the sight-lines in that venue really suck. I thought the sound was awesome. Usually don't comment about the ambient temp, but I do agree with another poster, the AC was keeping it perfect temp
But reading about that boston show, I really would have seen this show at the club.
Would have paid $100 for that
The crowd
-while I agree it was the wolf trap crowd. The band's core audience is in the 40's. As you can imagine there were a lot of balding pears. But other than the people who were pretty adamant that I was not going to pass them (and their were quite a few of them) the people I ended up standing by all tened to be super nice and really into the show. I actually had a few bonding moments and I love that about shows that can never be replicated no matter how good your audio system is...live music is just different...not that most of you on this board don't already know that. In general just about every group I was situated by loved just about every song. The Sing-a-long thing...well sometimes that does get tired, but man to me these were songs I'd been dying to hear for 30 years and I lost all inhibition and let my freak flag fly. I also thing the copious amount of alcohol and other things legal in DC also influenced that. Will say I managed to sustain peak buzz and not get too sloppy.
The show
- f'U f'n haters on this board, that was freaking awesome. Did my face melt and will I tell the grandkids about...no. Probably not a top five show of all time. But man, they sounded great and looked great. Paul and Tommy really looked to genuinely enjoy every bit of it. Besides my issues with the sight-lines, I though the sound was tight and that's been my experience at EchoStage shows...they do get the sound right. Didn't catch J Roddy, so can't comment on that. Hearing: I Will Dare, Skyway, Valentine, Waitress, You Be Me, Favorite Thing, Kiss Me, Seen The Video and Bastards (Those two songs really made my night)
And That freaking encore:
Skyway, Left of the Dial, Alex Chilton, Never Mind, I.O.U.
Ok, I'm really lamenting not hearing at least one of two of these: Here comes a regular, Unsatistified, Answering Machine, Shooting Dirty Pool, Androgynous, I'll Buy and Dose of Thunder. I was surprised how many songs they played I didn't know. I know fans of the hoot/Stink/Sorry ma were extremely happy. Takin a ride in to Favorite thing was just a great way to start the night.
My Boy Lollipop was kinda trite and I knew it was coming and resented it even more. And I'm not really that impressed with Whole Foods Blues either.
Long story, only slightly shorter..good freak'n show. They were awesome and glad I caught this show.

Echostage is sewage.
-
Here's my crowd story.
Standing in front of me were the prototypical DC couple....30something guy with glasses and nerd haircut, with younger (?), hotter, blonder girlfriend (wife?). Guy is sort of laid back and bobbing his head, girl is flailing wildly...screaming all the lyrics dance/acting all the songs with her hand, arm, and facial gestures, often with hands flailing wildly. You know the type. Heck, maybe it was even someone reading this.
Next thing I know, the guy is down on the ground looking for his glasses. I can't say that I saw how they departed his face, but I have a pretty good guess. Within a few seconds, a half dozen plus of us are trying to help the poor guy find his glasses before they get trampled. And voila, in a stroke of good fortune, a short white guy in a white shirt (I know this describes most DC men but that's the best description I have, and no it wasn't me, I swear) comes up with the glasses for the buzzer beater win.
My immediate thought was if I were the nerd who lost his glasses, I'd immediately head to the bar and buy the white guy a crappy thank you beer. And much to my relief, within a couple of minutes, the nerd made a run for the bar. He came back with three plastic bottles of (ICE COLD!) Miller Lite (or whatever it was). He handed one to his hot girlfriend to use as a dance prop, one to another friend, and the third...well he kept that one for himself. Then he plopped himself about a foot in front of the short, white shirt guy who found his glasses. I tell ya, it doesn't get much more DC concert crowd than that.

It's one of those venues where I'd weigh a bunch of factors before going back. I may be selling my Belle and Sebastian ticket. But I agree that the Philly show was easier to settle into. Overall I'm glad that I went...don't mean to sound ungrateful to finally see the 'Mats. And I'm definitely more of a "Sorry Ma..." and "Stink" fan. And "Let It Be" of course. never seen so many urinals in a men's room. echo staff was really friendly. they gave out free bottled water to the crowd at the front of the stage during the set change. took 10 minutes to get outside after the show was over.

Philly was more awesome than ExhoStage.
Set list spontaneity, sound quality, and Superchunk all contributed to that assessment.
Ended up unexpectedly solo in Philly, but met up with a guy I had chatted with at the Forest Hills show last year, and, without me even asking, he saved me a spot at the barrier at stage left, and we could trade off for trips to the bathroom or beverages, etc., without losing the spot.
Philly is indeed full of friendly friends who will love you like a brother, or something like that.
So, Baseball Project at Jammin' Java tonight?

Androgynous and Seen your video were played simultaneously. Paul and Dave playing Andro, and Tommy and Josh playing Video. We got around 1.5 minutes of that, and then they launched into Video for real.
Hold My Life as a crowd request was definitely the highlight for me.

I am wary of writing much of anything given the likely backlash/criticism that could ensue (although maybe i'll just kill the thread off which is probably about time) but I wanted to share the show I recorded with the boardies so I can't help but say something about the show..a lot of people have covered it pretty well I think....there's a fanboy or two but what people commented in general is in accord with my thoughts....but here goes:
I got there late due to unfortunate circumstances so I was in the back and could not improve much (I tried the upstairs but it was ridiculous...such a small amount of people could see from up there)... I slowly worked my way to stand next to the soundbooth or whatever where the sound guy was but that was also in the back and that was as far as I was going to get..just a few feet from the back wall and overhang right next to the sound mixing dude...... there was this phone that would ring with flashing yellow lights so he could tell it was ringing..it rang three times.. my theory is the people up front or on the stage where telling him what to do with the sound...the sound guy had what looked like a setlist but truth be told the songs on it varied from what they played so he may have been telling the truth when he said it was his cue/guide/. he kept it hid in a drawer and would regularly consult it with a pen flashlight..it looked like maybe next to the songs where the keys they were in..... i'm not sure if he was teir regular soundguy or not... i think he may have been...he said they don't use setlists....i kinda tend to believe him...still wished he'd given me the list.. the fact he kept it hid and would ocassionaly peek at it was weird.. never seen that
the sound in the back , even by the sound guy, was in my opinion awful as were the sight lines.. yes yes I lied to the soundguy in a vain attempt to get the list..my guess is the drums (principal culprit) and bass (accomplice) where just booming around hitting the wall in the back ..it just sounded bad..my guess is not too much could have been done to improve it..other than turn the drums down and not listen to tommy when he seemed to motion early on to turn up the bass.
i'm completely new to recording shows but i have a high end recorder (Edirol) and the way it came out is the way it sounded to me...and I am pretty sure I have it set right..
i think where you were probably makes a huge difference in such a big boxy venue in terms of sound not to mention as far as the people you are going to be next to which makes a huge difference ... the back is going to be the less hardcore people etc...where i was people seemed not into it except for a few....it looked like the crowd you'd see at soundgarden or something with mainly guys who'd gotten a pass to go out on a weekday night and drink.. people were drinking and yammering a ton...midsong peopel would leave go to the bar and come back with three crap beers.... some people clearly did not know who the replacements were...one girl was yawning throughout...
i don't know...i don't want to get too into it but for me it was a bit dissapointing to see the show in these circumstances.... lesson learned..i will not be returning to the echostage ..the location blows... the sight lines blow.. the sound at least for half the people blows....its too frickin big..having said that i thought paul sounded fabulous.. the guitars sounded good..it was mainly the drums that were off where i was standing....
i'm clueless about uploading stuff but i made an attempt even going so far to get a dropbox account to share "The piss has hit the floor...."
https://www.dropbox.com/s/x0tu3m4pipoywht/Replacements.wav?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8y5gdzj3f2yw0a/Replacements2.wav?dl=0
parking? ha ha.... first street i pulled into was a dead end...any signs telling you that? no of course not.. then i pulled into a parking lot in front of the venue (covered)...guy wanted FORTY... ha ha...i then found a lot for $20 which was reasonable given how things were looking.. i thought of taking my chances and parking in what looked like a bank lot...
the one plus: I managed to get home in 25 minutes...which was pretty remarkable
i was glad to see paul...his voice sounded just like on the records... but was this show worth $70 plus $20 in parking...plus trekking to the shithole part of DC?..for me? no...was it the Replacements? Of course not but I knew that going in and went into it with the idea I just wanted to see Paul one time and if he was with Tommy and doing Mats songs so much the better although I so wish I'd seen that 930 Club show....... you win some and lose some and i'm not trying to ruin anybody's buzz (I am glad I recorded the show because it does make me happy to listen to it)... within your reach would have been better replaced by something else in my opinion but that again...its just opinion...on the other hand the show was far more professional and held together better than anything the Replacements would have done in the 80s...
and why did the crowd only seem really familiar with can't hardly wait? is it cause of that godawful movie? i think so.
oh yeah..noticed posters on sale for $40...man..

Hold My Life as a crowd request was definitely the highlight for me.
my friend is the one who requested Hold My Life. I think he went to every night on this run of shows, except Pittsburgh and Columbus obviously, but he had tickets to those shows too.
really did feel like the Philly crowd was more of the "we're all here to have fun" vibe. even had a couple people tell me to get in front of them so I could see better.
-
I had a lot of fun.
I don't have much to add to what's already been said, but I think it's funny how much I fit the stereotypes here. I'm a doughy government lawyer and the next show I'm going to is indeed Fogerty at Wolf Trap.
-
lesson learned..i will not be returning to the echostage ..the location blows... the sight lines blow.. the sound at least for half the people blows....its too frickin big..
alternate conclusion: if you have to see a show there, arrive early enough to get a decent spot up front so you don't get all the echos, out of sync bass, etc.
-
I can only imagine the sound quality of a handheld recorder in a show that already sounded shitty??

Totally agreed, glad I'm not the only one. I try to catch myself too much from doing the "Philly was better" routine, but there are some shows where that's just absolutely the case and this was one of them. Given that was only my first Echostage experience, I feel I should try it again at some point (I'm in no rush to go back), but yes the balcony sight lines are crummy and good spots are VERY limited.
-
I can only imagine the sound quality of a handheld recorder in a show that already sounded shitty??
not handheld... the Edirol HR09 is pretty much the best portable audio recorder out there..
Its a tough call to say that the sound was much better somewhere else... usually at most places the sound is best around the soundmixer.....if you're way up front the sound is not going to be the best.. my ASSUMPTION is the sound must have been better elsewhere but I have no way of proving that..
so where would the sweetspot be? the upstairs was crap...all around..the back was crap..
so enlighten me Sweetcell?
-
anyways thanks Sweetcell, Yada..didn't come on here expecting anything less than criticism....sorry I shared the recording.

I actually didn't listen to the recording, I was making a general assumption that it most likely sounds like shit based on the reviews of the show and the recording device being used.

As a long time bootleg collector, I'd give it a B-/C+. An audience recording is always going to have the drums and bass somewhat boomy (and that room is awful), but Paul's voice is nice and clear in the mix. Thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed the performance, but the audience was unbearable. It was uncomfortably crowded.
I agree. Apparently this is typical for Echostage, as I've heard this complaint about the couple of other shows friends of mine attended (this was my first; I have a ticket for Belle & Sebastian that I'm not looking forward to based on the Mats crowd....we were literally pressed against each other, and we were not even very far up...)
-
Also, I've only been to four shows so far this year I think (S/K, Ex Hex, Mac McCaughan and the Replacements) and I think collectively I've listened to these bands for like 66.5 years.
I've been to more than four, but not by much. But, three of yours (I was out of town for Mac or I'd have been there too.) All good shows, though Ex Hex was my fave just because it was like this glorious surprise -- I kept shouting "now THIS is a rock n roll show!!"

[/quote]As an aside, there was nothing wrong with the 'Mats performance on Friday. In fact, it was really really good. That being said, I think an EDM show there would be a lot of fun (if you're into that sort of thing) but the sight lines do suck. Sound was very good to great, way better than Nation ever was. The later stuff, while being good, lacks some of the punch of earlier songs. But "Can't Hardly Wait" truly is a great song, as is "Alex Chilton". I love the variety that they picked and over the course of 2 nights I saw a ton of great music.
Do you think the Belle & Sebastian tickets are sell-able?

The Replacements regret to inform our friends in Pittsburgh and Columbus that the shows that were originally scheduled for May 5 & 6 will have to be canceled. All tickets purchased for these shows will be refunded at the point of purchase. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and hope that we can come back in the future and make it up to you.

I had heard that after they fulfill their European show obligations that it's a permanent wrap, this info would certainly support that, I don't think there will be any 'future' shows for them to 'make up'.

I know this reunion stuff can get old, but honestly they could do a little more like NMH
play 200 shows in 2-3 years and laugh all the way to the bank and never have to really worry about money until they put you in a pine box
Just don't know how you could turn down the offer to make a few mill just touring for a few years and seeing the Children by the million who really would Scream for you

Did you see their show the other night? Sonic Youth was around for ages and nobody really said "will they stop already?". But I guarantee you if they had broken up in 1992 and reformed, someone would have been saying that.

I am so happy I caught them when I did and that I made the effort to see a couple shows. They were never a polished band (except maybe on "I Will Dare", which is a perfect pop song) but damn what great music they made, and it was fun to be reminded of that. I was skeptical about the reunion performances, but they were so good. Sad that Westerberg feels like he betrayed the legacy of the band, but at least he gave a lot of joy to people while he did it.

I am lucky and greedy and got to see them 5 times on this run. From Riot Fest in Chicago 2013 to the Festival Pier in Philly. It all coincided with a very difficult period of time for me, and I felt like having the cobbled-together vestiges of one of my favorite bands and all of the similarly thrilled fans around was really helpful and (probably) destructive all at once.

Someone has posted a pretty good recording of this show at DIME.
It was still recorded at Echostage, so not so great, but not quite as bass heavy as the version that was posted here earlier.
