Title: 2017 Albums
Post by: vansmack on May 25, 2016, 04:02:52 pm
I'm sure we will forget about this thread and create another one in 4 months time, but I follow the rules:

The Magnetic Fields announced via Facebook that they are currently working on their first full-length in nearly five years. Entitled 50 Song Memoir, projected for release in early 2017.

Unlike some of you, I don't create posts or threads to stroke my post count.  I post simply to stroke my ego.

If anything, I limited my new thread counts by creating Things Smackie Things you Need to Know.  However, given the boards existing structure and nomenclature for Album releases I was left with no choice but to create a new thread to deliver news that I know at least one or two of you wanted to know.

I've never heard of them, but I'd love to give them a listen.  They have 25 albums for "free" on Amazon Prime.  Where would you recommend I start?

From the other bands you've expressed an interest in, I would be rather surprised if you like KMFDM.

As a massive fan of early to-mid-era KMFDM, I think everyone should listen to "Naive" (the deleted original 1990 version that did get a sort-of re-release). Any version of that LP is worth tracking down. That's the original duo of Sasha and En Esch. To me, that music is some of the finest dance/industrial music ever made. It's got a Kraftwerk-meets-Ministry vibe to it, with some Giorgio Moroder thrown in. You don't know whether you should dance or mosh to it. "Money" has about 5 great songs on it. "Angst" is good too. The really early stuff is worth exploring only after you've absorbed and appreciated "Naive". Great, great stuff. The song "Liebeslied" and the thrash version of "Godlike" are superb. Also, the original "Godlike" and "Split" singles are great.

The only real exposure I have to the genre is NIN, whom I love.  I need to radically expand my knowledge in this area.

Chuck Berry - "CHUCK" - New Album Coming In 2017

Apparently wrote and produced it himself.

Yes, he is 90 years old.

its important to say that in all likelihood these tracks were recorded years if not decades ago (I bet decades)....

Chuck has stopped playing live which is a blessing and at the same time sad...

I will always be sad I missed him at the 930 Club..I think it was either the night before or after he got the Kennedy Center Lifetime Honor (well deserved in spite of his brushes with the law)..... one of the worst calls I ever made...I did see him like 5 years ago but by then he'd obviously lost a big step....seeing him 20 years ago at the 930 club would have been much better....I didn't see him at Pimlico but my friend recorded it and I was able to watch it... Seth played drums with Chuck! Chuck must have gotten a nice paycheck cause he was very very happy and nothing makes him as happy as greenbacks...

Chuck Berry is number one in my rock and roll book....hard to believe he is still with us... I have a friend who saw what i think will be his last show in St Louis at a place he used to play every month...that was about 2 years ago.. no shows since then....

I have some autographed stuff by him but I really would have liked to meet him...

Another really funny thing was when Chuck Berry played a Patent Attorney Conference in DC many years ago (15?).. My friend who was a patent attorney filmed it and it was really funny watching Chuck cutting loose on the floor with all these stiff attorneys around.... I wish I'd gone to that one but I dont' think I was good friends with this guy at the time.....

Hail Hail Rock and ROll is must see (in its extended form).. you really get an idea of Chuck the man and it is at times hard to watch

Bruce Springsteen's clip in it is so funny ..worth checking out on youtube

It goes without saying that you could release multiple albums of the Beatles or Stones doing Chuck Berry tunes.. he really is the seminal influence in rock and roll....

I always post this and probably have on this forum but since its one of my favorite pieces of writing.. by CUb Koda (Brownsville Station) on the All Music Guide:

Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers. Quite simply, without him there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, nor a myriad others. There would be no standard "Chuck Berry guitar intro," the instrument's clarion call to get the joint rockin' in any setting. The clippety-clop rhythms of rockabilly would not have been mainstreamed into the now standard 4/4 rock & roll beat. There would be no obsessive wordplay by modern-day tunesmiths; in fact, the whole history (and artistic level) of rock & roll songwriting would have been much poorer without him. Like Brian Wilson said, he wrote "all of the great songs and came up with all the rock & roll beats." Those who do not claim him as a seminal influence or profess a liking for his music and showmanship show their ignorance of rock's development as well as his place as the music's first great creator. Elvis may have fueled rock & roll's imagery, but Chuck Berry was its heartbeat and original mindset.

Mine, rather quickly, like less than 2 weeks after ordering, i think. I have always had the greatest service experience with ticketfly and their shipping times.

Hopefully, this show will compare to at least one of the nights where Phish played their Reunion Shows at Hampton, on my birthday.

How the hell is At The Drive-In not in that list? They even dropped their first single already! Screw stereogum! To me, that might be my most anticipated album of 2017.

I'll be looking forward to Queens of The Stone Age, Gorillaz, Run The Jewels, Zack De La Rocha (really? For realzies?) Pallbearer, Phife Dawg and maybe Mastodon (last two were not favorites by a long shot though)

I don't care much for Cloud Nothings or Sheer Mag. Girlpool and Pissed Jeans might be pretty good but they're nothing I'm super excited for.

Definitely psyched for PWR BTTM and Priests. Also throw Vagabon, Allison Crutchfield and Run the Jewels up there.

Stuff not on the list above that I'm looking forward to:
Wax Idols
Coup Sauvage and The Snips
Hand Grenade Job
The Bats
Six Organs of Admittance

I heard the new Feelies LP. It's mellow-ish and has kind of a glossy demo feel to it. That being said, the tunes are freakin' great. Another gold brick in their discography.

The Wrens: (http://www.wrens.com/news-etc/2017/1/5/done-done-r-1)

Anyway, I hesitate to say, partially because it hardly matters in the bigger picture, especially the current political one, but...of the last batch of songs that needed more re-re-re-etc.-re-work after going to mastering last fall, I finished the last one & sent it off yesterday.

It's also that I do realize I've said this before so understandably the "it's finally done" message gets a little tiring (trust me, you can't imagine how tired I am of it, times some unimaginable googolplex math for my wife). This is a little different though, though mostly for reasons not worth getting into. But with whoever said it first in mind, that "a poem/work of art is never finished, only abandoned" (which I thought was Eliot but Googling says Valery; for it being a work of art that's abandoned, Google says DaVinci and even E.M. Forster), I've tried to abandon it before, at different lines I've drawn for different reasons in the sand, but finally, it's as close to 'done' as I can get it.
So finally, with acceptance, abandoned!

But this post isn't even about the album per se, in some sort of announcement sense, or certainly not anymore. It's almost entirely just a personal, getting-life-together update (by putting this behind me). More on a par with, 'hey, I graduated night school' or 'I've gotten a new job" or "I've finished years of work on a rock record in my 50s".

Why it took so long - 6 1/2 years, each ranging from 'less than satisfying' to profoundly unfun - also isn't worth getting into or at least not now. That answer lies at the intersection of Complicated & Deathly Boring, a place no one really needs to go. But specifically, to the extent you may be following for the music and not my own personal shenanigans, it being done now means it should be on-schedule to release in Sept., maybe Oct. So there's that, for what that's worth.

Anyway, it's been a weirdly euphoric morning where, after those 6 1/2 years, I don't have to fire up the failing computer (still running Logic 9 in Snow Leopard as it was the day this all started) to work on it.

I haven't felt this way since the summer of 2003, when the last one was also finally 'done' done, but not out yet (luckily for all, that was pre-social media sparing dozens an at-least-equal number of "done!" guesses).

Not sure quite what to do with myself. Maybe I'll dabble in music...

My thought exactly -- will we actually see this album?  I've been waiting for it for a decade (I know, I know, they put out The Meadowlands in 2003).  The Wrens in the Black Cat backroom one of my favorite shows of all time.  All of which means I can only be disappointed by a new album.  And yet, I'd like to find out for myself.  Fingers crossed.

The new Grandaddy LP is up there with some of their best stuff. These guys still make great music.

Also, the new Feelies LP is out tomorrow, and it's another one that isn't part of the usual "well, we're doing a reunion so let's slap something together". It's solid. Both are solid arguments for when bands come back together for the right reasons.

I've really tried with the Grandaddy, have listened to it 5-6 times all the way through and the only emotion I can muster up is "Yup that's Grandaddy all right." I don't dislike it, and there are some good parts, but now that I'm no longer actively trying to get into it, it's faded from view.

The thing about that record is the overall mood...the alienation, the humor, the quirkiness, but also the lyrics. I think it's one of those LPs that I'm going to listen to, forget about, but then go back to and think "God, these guys are great". They're one of those bands that are fun to rediscover because their music is sort of suspended in time.

I can't say enough good things about the new Feelies record. It just pleases me so much to hear new music from them that sounds like them but still surprises me. This LP reminds me of their live sets: slow-ish to start, then rockin' by the end. The last tune is 9-minute guitar freakout and it's killer. Not usual for them, and that's why it's so cool.

Ride announce details of first new album in more than 20 years (http://www.avclub.com/article/ride-announce-details-first-new-album-more-20-year-252603)

Ride, the pioneering shoegaze band behind acclaimed albums like Nowhere and Going Blank Again, have shared some new details about its forthcoming album. After announcing the record was in the works in December and releasing two singles last month, the British band?s first new songs in more than 20 years, Pitchfork reports the new album is called Weather Diaries and will be out June 16 on Wichita Records. And alongside those details was the release of a new music video for lead single ?Charm Assault (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW_lRP2RqX8)?

Interesting. I'd say it gets better every time I hear it...I think from start to finish it actually is one of the most cohesive LPs. Maybe it sounds too demo-y for you? I think "Gone Gone Gone", "Been Replaced" and "Flag Days" hold up as some of their best songs.

Queens Of The Stone Age have ?just finished? their new album (http://www.nme.com/news/music/queens-stone-age-just-finished-new-album-2029175)

?Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon and At the Drive-In have all been recording,? he said, ?and we all have new records coming out this year.?

so when is QOTSA coming to DC???

The new Mastodon album is so limp and weak, in my opinion.

So did I. Everything through Blood Mountain was great, and I even liked Crack the Skye for a little while. But they lost me after that.

Bjork's new album is about, “that feeling, post-Trump, when everything’s gone horribly wrong,” she said. “And you escape to an island, and there’s a lot of women there with children, and everybody’s playing flutes, and everybody’s naked, and there’s all these plants you’ve never seen before and all these birds you’ve never heard before, and orchids, and it has that feeling of pioneering into a new world.”

How did I not realize that U2, Chris Stapleton and Taylor Swift were all releasing albums on the same day until about 9 o'clock last night?

And I'm supposed to work today?
