The Eclipse is giving me good cover to make a trip to Ashville (1 hour from the direct path)
so, who else has got plans for August 21?
i might attend this lil' shindig: http://oregoneclipse2017.com/ (website seems to be having issues at the moment...). looks like we'll be getting about 1:40 of darkness (vs. the max of 2:40, near nashville).
this will be my second solar eclipse. first one was in 1999, in hungary, at a similar techno-hippie gathering where we got 2:22 of totality. weird stuff, can't wait to experience it again.
best eclipse map i've found so far: http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2017_GoogleMapFull.html
gratuitous anigif, to ensure that seth shuts this sh*t down:

I'm doing it for sure...and people...you have not SEEN an eclipse unless you are in the PATH
even a few miles away is a different experience...let alone 500
I too saw the one in 99, in Turkey near Amasra up a few thousand feet with a full view of the black sea
was amazing seeing it come at you over the water and hearing the animals kinda freak out and go totally silent
Although I ended up unscathed...people would have thought it was a bad omen
as I was in a pretty bad bus accident 6 hours later and then escaped a major earthquake by just a few hours a few days later
I bought an evil eye a few hours before and I'm convinced it save me :)
All told, more than 17,000 people were killed and damages totaled $6.5 billion, making it one of the most devastating earthquakes of the 20th century.

So as walky would say...I got Eclipse'ed trying to get some Eclipse glasses
Confirmed there were free glasses at Air & Space..but apparently they are gone by 10:05 every day (they will be giving out 60K on Monday...but I won't be here)
Anyone know where I can pick up some glasses locally?

Thanks GGW, but all the libraries are out and A&S is quite difficult
haven't tried the zoo...but kind of a PIA to deal with
I'd be willing to pay, but no one has them in stock
need to follow up on Warby Parker

Food, Booze, and the path of totality. Or, you know, rain.
It is going to be a madhouse in Charleston
We considered it but apparently that's going to be over a million people there
I think the beach is the place to be
I want a few years ago and was able to drink only Charleston (or within a 20 mile radius )made beers
And all were fantastic

Eclipse'ed
Big cloud obscured for us in Brevard South Carolina at the Oscar Blues Brewery
They did have Jai Alai IPA on tap!
The Pisgah thunder (https://www.facebook.com/Pisgah-Thunder-528588500650448/)was almost worth the trip though
The extra 4 hours of traffic on Tuesday was a nice cherry on top

uh, are you not assuming that things will be back to normal and we'll be travelling again by 2024? how did covid eff this up for you?
we already have plans for '24: friends in ohio have invited us to crash their place and see the eclipse from their backyard :) i'd like to go further south and get a longer totality, but the peak is in central mexico (4:28!) and i don't see myself hanging about there... maybe we can upgrade to texas.

I think he’s really baked and doesn’t realize it’s currently the year 2021....
-
well this information did come to me on the day Virginia legalized weed...so there is that
longer totality is always the goal...dead center of the path is critical
If you can find a high point and see it as it comes it would be recommended
Just realized my parent's place is right in the center between Buffalo and Erie (Duration of totality: 3 minutes, 47 seconds)
Austin (4mins 27 seconds)
https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8
I think being dead center is more important than length
-
Egypt 2027...6:29 mins!

Folks who saw the last one talk about it like it was the rapture or something.
I'm looking at you, Burlington, VT...........
-
What're your plans for the eclipse? April 8th is coming up soon!
-
Heading New York and plan to catch it on the banks of lake Erie
-
I'll be at Kent State, near Cleveland

See what the solar eclipse will look like in your city (https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/interactive/2024/solar-eclipse-view-cities/?itid=hp-top-table-main_p001_f003)
Very good interactive page at WaPo. DC's gonna get 87%, enough to notice it getting dark without looking.
-
That's really cool. I didn't realize we'd get so much coverage here.

meaningless and not worth your time unless it's 100%
feel free to look through a pinhole or get special glasses
if you are not in the path of totality, it might as well be just another day
