Title: Anyone else standing in line for NIN tickets?
Post by: K8teebug on May 17, 2018, 08:56:42 am
I plan on getting there around 6:30ish. Will be in a purple chair holding a flower umbrella!

I would never financially support such a ludicrous ticketing model with my money.

You do realize that once upon a time this is exactly what people used to do, right?

I might also add that in 1993, my sister and I waited in line to participate in a lottery (yes, a lottery...no guarantee you'd get to buy tickets) for INXS and that alone was part of what made the experience special. Most people showed up in pairs, but we'd all start talking and trying to pair up so that we improved our odds of getting in. My sister's lottery ticket wasn't called, but mine was. When you see a "big" band in a smaller venue and invest a little time and energy to make it possible, a certain type of die-hard fan shows up. The concert becomes a bigger deal. When Michael Hutchence hit that stage, the energy in the club was totally electric and I'll never forget how much we all had. When they ended with "Don't Change", it was one of those special moments because it felt like he was making eye contact directly with you. I saw them in a bigger venue later on and it wasn't the same thing. When I saw the Foo Fighters at the Black Cat and waited in line for those tickets, I met a couple people that I'm still actually friends with and hang out with on a fairly regular basis. I wouldn't want to do that for every show, but to be honest, it has the potential to be a fun time. I just hope the rain will hold off that morning.

Anyway, K8teebug, I hope that you'll actually have a fun time, meet some cool people, and if you can still snag me an extra I'll be eternally grateful and be your own personal runner to the bar for the show. Thank you!

You do realize that once upon a time people applied leeches to their body as medicine, right?

You do realize that once upon a time people owned other people as property, right?

You do realize that once upon a time women didn't have the right to vote or own property, right?

Tix go on sale Saturday, yes? In any event, no. Had MPP been an option, then yes.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I went to the first Lollapalooza and Nine Inch Nails played? I used their set to go get some food, but I did see enough of them to see that they were having technical difficulties, and Trent started pitching a hissy fit.

Have fun in line!

It may have been the bathroom line. Because at that point Space really didn't have money for amphitheater food. Whereas now of course I gobble that shit up.

Anyway, I did buy the first NIN album on cassette within weeks of its' release and really dug it at the time. I mean "Head like a hole, black as your soul, I'd rather die than give you control." Who doesn't identify  with that? True story. Good times.

Frankly, I'm excited that I get to meet a new Boardie and (hopefully) go see a fun show. I'm probably just as excited to see the Jesus and Mary Chain. In any case, I think it's a stretch to compare waiting in line to using leeches. I detect a sore spot for Julian. Bless his bruised heart.

The idea of physically queuing for tickets is so antiquated, the band should be roundly mocked for considering it. It’s an inane, inefficient, customer unfriendly practice. It’s stupid.

Then again, I was tripping my ass off, so what do I know?

Out of curiosity, as the board gets deeper and deeper into our 40's and 50's (Hi space!), do you still have the angst in you to enjoy NIN? Like, do you sit around your home and listen to their music?

I like their shows...certain bands I don't listen to often, like NIN, Radiohead, etc. whose music I enjoy but don't listen to very often. But if they tour and do something interesting, I'll go check them out. I'm just as excited about seeing the Jesus and Mary Chain too though. I think both bands together will make it a very worthwhile evening.

Hear Nine Inch Nails' Menacing New Song 'God Break Down the Door'
Sax-heavy track highlights band's upcoming 'Bad Witch' LP

meh... something of a hot mess.  maybe it makes sense in the context of the album (EP)?

i'd still go to the show, if i could.  i've seen NIN six or seven times, and every show has been memorable if not mind-blowing.  even this new song, which i'm not a fan of, will probably work live.

One does not have to "have the angst" to enjoy music like that.

If I had smartphone, or the internet, or eCommerce, or, hell, even a message board like this back in 1991, I would have bitched just as much.

Aside from this semi-sketch dude in front of me, it was fun! Lots of cool people in line and it was luxury to have the lobby open for restrooms and coffee. Heard it was easy to get tickets in the afternoon...oh well! Got in line around 6:15 and got my tickets at 11:30. Cool envelope for them and overall, a fun experience even with the rain. Nice to see so many people out for bands who've been around a while.

I hate this idea, and I am glad the social-media reaction seems to be largely negative, lol.  I drive 90-120 minutes (depending on traffic) into D.C. from southern Maryland to see shows.  The idea of doing this drive to stand for hours in line to [maybe] buy a ticket turns my stomach.  And it hardly seems to combat price-gouging resellers.  Not to any meaningful extent.  Obviously loads and loads of people bought four tickets today and turned around to list them for hundreds of dollars apiece online.

I know people are having these mini-orgasms recounting how they used to brave the wind and the snow to wait in line, dreaming of a golden ticket and warmed by their love of rock 'n' roll, but I despise this stunt by Trent.

I am fairly ambivalent re:  NIN.  I hope other acts don't follow suit.

I drive 90-120 minutes (depending on traffic) into D.C. from southern Maryland to see shows.  The idea of doing this drive to stand for hours in line to  buy a ticket turns my stomach.

bands that play DC don't focus on potential attendees from 100+ miles away... so don't be surprised when they make decisions that aren't popular with 100+ miles folks.

And it hardly seems to combat price-gouging resellers.  Not to any meaningful extent.  Obviously loads and loads of people bought four tickets today and turned around to list them for hundreds of dollars apiece online.

yes, there were scalpers in line and some tickets will be resold.  but making folks wait in line greatly, greatly reduces the number of potential scalpers.  the engine behind scalping isn't the dude waiting in line with his friend.  it's the bots, and anyone with a high-speed internet connection buying tickets that they have no possibility of attending (i.e. 99.999% of internet users).  making folks stand in line stops these two main categories of ticket snatchers.  no method is perfect, NIN's approach here isn't perfect either, but it certainly beats putting all the tickets online and hoping the bots don't get them all.

You are a good and great person. It’s nice to see another adult on here. I swear 90% of this community are the Bernie Bros of music.

you two should form a club.
