Title: In Which I Share With You the Best Song that Played as I Grocery Shopped
Post by: Space Freely on August 21, 2018, 03:00:33 pm
I do my grocery shopping at Giant and Whole Foods, with an occasional visit to Trader Joe's.

Sunday 8/19 at Giant:

The Kaiser Chiefs: "I Predict a Riot" (this was followed up by Peter Cetera's "Hard to Day I'm Sorry")

Giant has really been stepping up their music game lately.

Giant has been killing it lately for sure....also, between songs there are announcements to the effect of: "go ahead, sing along."  So, I now treat every grocery visit as karaoke until security escorts me the fuck out.

Tuesday, 8/21, Giant:

For me it was a tie:

A Flock of Seagulls-"I Ran"
Til Tuesday "Voices Carry"

I asked my wife to vote to break the tie, and she chose AFOS.

Til Tuesday "Voices Carry"
was listening to some classic gang green recnetly and I always loved their cover of this song and how they changed this one key lyric
"When I tell her that I'm falling down drunk what does she say-a-ay."

just ran across this and thought I'd share

No prob, Anyone can post. I just spent nine hours at King's Dominion and heard maybe three good songs the whole time. Superstition, Private Eyes, and an Avett Brothers song.

It seemed like Patterson Hood was playing dj.

First I heard London Calling and that was followed by Sweet Home Alabama.

I'm calling that one a tie.

and to think, I mindlessly walk through the aisles, more interested in what my stomach, is telling me to buy. of course, I am obsessed also, with watching all people, and mentally breaking them down psychologically based on their movements, facial actions and what they are wearing.  what . . . music.  every, once in a,while I do hear that what was awful before, is now updated and attempting to be, cool.

Sunday, 9/2 Giant.

Elvis Costello "The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes"
Squeeze "Pulling Mussels From a Shell"

I'm going to call this one a tie.

I never tried mussels or even paid mind to what they were until I was in my 30's. (Turns out they make me violently ill, so maybe my ignorance was a blissing.) I think every other dorm room window was blasting that song in the 80's. I always though the guy was singing the jock anthem "Pulling Muscles for Michelle."

A girlfriend from college's dad did some work on one of Billy's houses, and I heard enough stories from her to know he's a total dick. (It's been so long I don't really remember the stories...)

Whole Foods maybe two or three times a week, Same for Giant. Maybe more if i need a special ingredient. Trader Joes maybe once a month. Probably the same for my wife.

How many times for you?

Sunday 9/16, Giant

The GoGos-Head Over Heels
The Cure-Lovesong

I was also at Whole Foods but they don't play the music loud enough to actually hear what it is.

Hearing the GoGos reminded me of my college roommate who got really pissed when cute chubby GoGo Belinda mutated into skinny Belinda. He was so offended.

It's  actually two or three times a week (not five) because Whole Foods and Giant are right next to each other and when i hit one i also hit the other. And if you're shopping on a Saturday, you may not know what you want to make on a Thursday, or maybe you want to wait until Thursday so you know the produce is at it's freshest.  It's not like I live 10 miles from the nearest grocery store. Each of them are within walking distance of my house, and i drive by both on the way home four days a week.

How close are you to the nearest grocery store? I picture you being miles away.

Growing up, we lived in a number of places, way out in the country. Always a good eight miles from the grocery store. We probably went grocery shopping once a week. In one place we lived, we also lacked a washer and dryer. I remember the laundromat was next door to the grocery store. We'd go grocery shopping while doing our laundry...I'd get a pack of baseball or football cards and come back and peruse all the statistics on the back until the laundry was done. Good times.

it's a 6 mile drive into town.  we're about 3 miles down a small, winding country road and a third of a mile down a gravel road so it can feel isolated but in reality we're not that far out.  i drive into civilization every day for work so i potentially could shop ever day but i'd much rather stock up and get it over with once a week.

I'd get a pack of baseball or football cards and come back and peruse all the statistics on the back until the laundry was done. Good times.

i feel this does a lot to explain your current career... ;D

Don't worry, I wasn't grocery shopping on company time. My wife tells me I should do housework and grocery shopping during telework time, but I say no way. I just stopped and bought groceries on the way home from the doctor. Totally legit.

Wonderful Christmastime makes me want to wage war on Christmas!
Technically not a wings song, I always thought it was because of the video
Although the members of Wings are not on the recording, they do appear in the promotional music video

it is estimated that McCartney makes $400,000 a year from this song, which puts its cumulative earnings at a little over $15 million

I am always amazed that playlists that are automatically created by AI continue to include this song because it's a McCartney song with no credence paid to the time of year.  It's fucking not even November and I don't need to hear that song!

It's a simple script to save humanity.

My wife asked me to pick some stuff up on the way home from work Friday night, and of course I happily obliged, awaiting with wonder as to what tunes Giant had in store for me.

Alas, the first song I couldn't decipher. So the next and last song was the winner. Though not her best shot, it may have been her biggest hit.

Benatar-Love is a Battle Field

Benatar-Love is a Battle Field
Fun Fact, Pat Benatar grew up in Lindenhurst Long Island NY (graduated 71)
birth last name... Andrzejewski  (kinda see why she decided to keep her ex husbands last name)
She never ever admits being from there...always said NY or NYC
(although I did just find out she did something with the lindenhurst choir in 2008)

Momma Sidehatch had her in homeroom when she was pregnant with baby Sidehatch

I'm not sure if this post belongs in the Just Announced thread or in this one.

I'm going grocery shopping tonight. Stay tuned for a new post. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to take my kid, who will no doubt decide she wants to explore the store on her own and find stuff that I would never ever buy and insist that she needs it. Then I'll likely let her pick out one thing, and I'll get to the checkout line and have to stand around waiting until she reappears. Then we'll go home and eat the Papa John's that she's been insisting on for a while now and I finally gave in (because although we do have leftover Ledo's that my wife have in on ("I don't do leftovers.", thanks to the 50% off Nats win and score 7 or more offer.

While inclusiveness is usually a virtue, I'm not sure that the playlist of a hipster diner qualifies for this thread. We *expect* to hear good music at a hipster diner, we don't expect it when we're grocery shopping.

But since you've indirectly raised the issue, doesn't a good playlist make a huge difference in the quality of a dining or drinking experience?

So I went to Giant and Whole Foods Sunday 9/30/18.

At Giant, I got 4-5 songs. The only one i could name was Chris Deburg's "Don't Pay the Ferryman." One of the worst songs in history. Whose idea was it to sell us garbage songs like this. The only people who could possibly like this songs are people with a bone to pick with Ferry Men, and Hutch.  ;D

Then I went to Whole Foods. Typically, my old man ears can't hear the music they play. But Whole Foods rescued the day by playing "uh Oh, Love Comes to Town", off of one of the greatest debut albums ever, Talking Heads 77,

10/1/18 Avocados are one of the three foods that make me deathly ill (along with mussels and shitake mushrooms), so I avoid them. But my wife likes having them with Mexican food. Since I was making Mexican last night, she asked me to stop and get some avocados.

I opted to stop at Whole Foods. I picked up two avocados and some brie for later in the week, and while doing so, I heard:

The Replacements-Can't Hardly Wait

The bad new yesterday 10/3 was that I needed more pasta for my dinner recipe and there was no way of getting around it, I was going to have to take my kid to the grocery store. At least when I take her to a brewery, she doesn't beg for me to buy her everything in the place..

But the good news is of course I was going to get some Giant songs.

We walked in and they were playing "Mushaboom" by Feist. A good song off of her finest album. A strong candidate.

Three minutes later, the opening chords to Tom Petty's "The Waiting" kicked in and I knew we had a winner. Just as the chorus was kicking in, I heard a loony kid a few aisles over start singing along at the top of her lungs. "Some parent is probably gong to be mortified." I thought.....but then realized it was *my* kid. I wasn't sure whether to be embarrassed or proud.

Sunday, 10/7 Giant

First song I recognized was "Forever Man" by Eric Clapton. This one should be in a competition with half of the Billy Joel and all of the Phil Collins catalog for worst song ever. The synth line sounds like it was lifted form Jan Hammer's Miami Vice Theme.

If God isn't real, can we please get rid of Eric Clapton too?

I guess the best song was "And We Danced" by the Hooters. Nothing to write home about, but at least their legions of fans aren't claiming they are "God."

I do believe Phil Collins was involved with Forever Man and yes it is an atrocity

I was thinking about Eric Crapton this morning...god since about 1971 he has sucked and yet people worship him

BTW read his autobiography....you will loathe him after doing so...a horrible person

actually, he isn't on his legs at all... at least not for the tour opener in florida: he sat for the entire performance, walked in with a cane, and didn't play drums.  (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/phil-collins-not-dead-yet-tour-set-list/)  the setlist in DC (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/phil-collins/2018/capital-one-arena-washington-dc-6be96a7a.html) was identical to the FL setlist.  looks like phil is phoning it in.

tour is called "not dead yet"... which, while technically true...

Blind Melon-No Rain. Trader Joe's. I hated this song with a passion when it was overplayed on the VT radio station I listened to back when it was released. Now I think it's ok given that I only hear it once every five years.. We had just dashed into TJ's sans umbrellas in a rainstorm and it was playing. Perfect.

Talking Heads-Uh Oh, Love Comes to Town. Whole Foods. Uh Oh, second time I've heard this song in a short period of time at WF. Maybe they have just a handful of songs on endless replay. In my younger years I have worked in that kind of environment and I think it qualifies as a minor form of abuse.

U2 had a great first 3-4 records. Then everything after that (including Joshua Tree) is ass. So I guess I'm with you: they undeniably have some great stuff, just none of it has come out in the last 25 years.

I think if the band was from -- I don't know -- Albany, NY they would've broken up a long time ago and be certainly remembered, but revered about as much as, say, REO Speedwagon. Along with Boston Sports teams; Conor McGregor; Catholicism; Notre Dame; Jameson; et al, U2 profits from the sick, weird tribalism of Irish-American immigrants that demands their obsequious support for all things with the thin veneer of overt-Irishness regardless of any of these institutions' relative merits. (And I say this as someone whose mother's maiden name was Brady.)

Vansmack will now show up and remind everyone of this year's Notre Dame/Michigan score.

i was at a local street festival recently, poking around... so that sorta counts as shopping.

it was a huge festival, biggest street fair i've ever been to.  off in the distance i heard some orchestral-tinged hard rock coming from the stage area.  thought to myself "hey, this is decent, sounds very 70's or 80's prog-rock".  then a voice with a thick English accent chimed in, "...and i think you'll all recognize this next one, it's called Aqualung" - and a perfect rendition of Aqualung ensued.  "wait, that voice, i recognize it... was that Ian Anderson?!?"  i've seen Jethro Tull live, and hell if this wasn't them.  didn't make any sense - have Tull been reduced to the county fair circuit?!?  we were on our way back to the car with two whiney kids so i couldn't break away to visually confirm, but my ears were certain it was JT (or Anderson, at least).

got home, looked it up online, turns out it was a (very good) JT cover band called The Jethro Tull Experience (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4grPJRHFGs).

so i wasn't really shopping, and i heard a cover band.  probably doesn't warrant a post in this thread, but here i am anyways.  sorry.

Seeing as one of those phenomenons exists and the other is wholecloth you just imagined, yes, I suppose "as opposed to" is the proper prefix to that sentence.

People from Michigan do not go around telling everyone everything from Michigan is fantastic and worthy of our support; we tell people we it is "not cold," despite all evidence to the contrary.

My daughter informed me that tomorrow is a field trip and she needed something from Giant, so back I went.

INXS-New Sensation

I saw them at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY on 10/29/87. I'll admit, I was a fan for much of the 80's going back to 1982's Shabooh Shoobah. Or whatever it was called. Then they lost me in the 90's. Then the singer died while jerking off. Then they got a new singer on Rock Star INXS which was must see viewing at our house but they don't seem to be doing much these days. god i love that you can find stuff out on he internet like that last sentence. god bless the web.

In addition to my usual Saturday shopping, I was tasked with purchasing some nail polish remover. I haven't worn nail polish since 1997, so that was a tough find and kept me in store for some extra tunes.

The first two songs I heard were "I Don't Care Anymore" by Phil Collins and "I Go To Extremes" by Billy Joel. Has there ever been a worse double shot? Clearly the winner was the PSA for changing your smoke detector batteries. She had a sexy commanding voice.

Then, as i was struggling and getting upset because I couldn't find the nail polish remover, on came the soothing voice of Glen Frey doing the Jackson Browne classic "Take it Easy." And oh how much better I felt.

People like to shit on the Eagles, and surely they weren't in the same league as Gram Parsons, but what man can't identify with the idea of having seven women on his mind? Sometimes you're just feeling 1972.

Prince-Delirious

So a few weeks ago I picked up 1999 and Purple Rain among a bunch of other CD's and books in a $10 last day box at a library book sale. Usually, there's some senior citizen dealer guy who has waited in line so that he can grab all of the DVD's and CD's before anyone else. So I lucked out.

I played 1999 on a long car ride last weekend. My kid's review: "Turn this garbage off." My wife's review: "Some music just doesn't age well." My review: "This is Prince's best album and it's awesome, and I'm the driver."

A banner day for grocery store playlists.

First up was Giant. First song was the annoying Ballroom Blitz by Sweet.

But then, a sweet three song blast followed:

Television-See No Evil
The Cure-Lovesong
Talking Heads-This Must Be the Place

They were on such a roll, I didn't want to leave. But alas, I headed to Whole Foods for a few items, where I heard:

Johnny Cash-Walk the Line

I had occasion to be in Space Freely's home Giant this weekend (Hollies - Long Cool Woman) and I was struck by the clarity of their audio system. I find most grocery stores have crappy systems that one must struggle to hear. But Space's Giant clearly values the customer experience and have engineered a system to ensure that you hear your shopping soundtrack consistently from the produce section all the way to frozen foods.

who would have thought this thread would have legs...dominating the top spot for some time now
maybe Julie can come up with a "integers I saw while at the Grocery Store" companion thread

This begs the question, who makes the call on music selection?
Do we think it's locally sourced?
What about royalties...as surely the stores are profiting from artists blood, sweat and tears?
Is someone's full time job to DJ?
Or is it listed as the Assistant Managers responsibilities and no extra fee is paid?
Who is the audience?... do internal staff want something to listen whilst they polish the apples?
Or does the manager say "we need to create an atmosphere of a hipsters basement soundtrack"

Or is there a station on Spotify/Pandora/Musaqic

the store manager should review this
https://cloudcovermusic.com/blog/licensing-questions-legal-business-music/
If you do not receive the proper authorization you can be held liable for damages from a minimum of $750 up to a maximum of $150,000 per song played.

maybe Julie can come up with a "integers I saw while at the Grocery Store" companion thread
I do only shop at bespoke farm-to-table grocery stores that round off all item prices to whole numbers so this is totally in play.

Today is my telework day. I will be shopping after I sign out later. I'll report my findings later, though this time of year it's usually lots of Xmas music.

My wife seems to think that the purpose of me teleworking is for me to get housework and errands done while I'm supposed to be working, but I disagree.

Get a “permission slip” from your employer saying you are not authorized to do housework while teleworking

I think the only non-Xmas song I heard at either Giant or Whole Foods yesterday was  fat turd John Belushi singing Soul Man. Or at least I think it was the JB version. That's a song that I don't think anybody could make a good version of.

So I'm going to go with...none.

This weekend I'm planning a rare stop at TJ's. Maybe they'll have something.

Hey man, some of us come here just to read about the best songs people heard while grocery shopping. Can you please keep your commentary and grocery exploits out of this thread so we don't sully it? Perhaps we should make a The Best Song that Plated as I Grocery Shopped Commentary thread so we can stop living like savages.

I don't listen to the radio and i don't own any Hendrix, so it's not that overdone to me. I'd also rather hear the Dylan original but of course they're going to go with the popular version at the grocery store..

Am surprised to read that... Hendrix's version is and has been everywhere for decades...but whatever, good for you

A lot of these classic rock songs are just so boring at this point... the songs that stand out at a grocery store are the more modern ones... when i go to a grocery store and i hear something from the 80s on I am pleased....

I was in Giant about a week ago and they played a song that was way too indie for the people shopping at the time. I could even catch any of the words to the song to look it up. If I had the guess, I would have guessed Built To Spill. After hearing them on the radio just now, I'm slightly more sure it was them....

I think it was more like a reinterpretation than a cover, and it was inserted as part of a song...they've done this with other songs.

TIL
Peaches & Herb are an American vocalist duo. Herb Fame (born October 1, 1942) has remained a constant as "Herb" since the duo was created in 1966; seven different women have filled the role of "Peaches", most notably Francine "Peaches" Hurd Barker (April 28, 1947 – August 13, 2005), the original "Peaches" who lent her nickname to the duo, and Linda Greene, the third "Peaches" who appeared on the duo's biggest hits "Shake Your Groove Thing" (1978) and "Reunited" (1979).

I live in the country.  And I mean the country.  I have noticed something odd . . . none, and I mean none, of the stores (Food Lion / Martins / Walmart / Target / Aldi ) around here, do not play any type of music at all, ever.  But they do now have robots that wander up and down the aisles looking for spills, or things on shelves that don't belong there.

People here, hate those robots, and believe they are all out to take people's jobs.  I just want to know, if they are good in bed.

Ok, this is one of the most craptastic songs ever recorded but what made this the best song at Giant today, 9/5/19, was seeing a 60+ year old man pushing his cart through the produce aisle, singing every line.

Lovin' Every Minute of It
Loverboy

I'm not man or machine
I'm just something in between
Oh, oh, oh, oh
I'm all love, a dynamo
So push the button and let me go
Whoa, oh, whoa, whoa
You want me to come alive
Flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready (ready)
Aim (aim)
Fire
Touch that dial
Turn me on
Start me like a motor, make me run
Lovin' every minute of it (Lovin')
Lovin' every minute of it
Turn that dial all the way
Shoot me like a rocket into space
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
C'mon on
I got fun, you want some
I'm ever ready, Dr. Love
Whoa, oh, whoa, whoa
I'm antenna, aerial
I'm tunin' in, I'm outta control
Whoa, oh, whoa, whoa
You got love, you got a deal
You wanna drive then take the wheel
You and me can let it be
Ready (ready),…

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts-I Love Rock and Roll

They also played Stevie Wonder, but he's always seemed overrated to me. If he were a white guy with 20/20 vision, he'd be about as revered as Anthony Kiedis.

A huge amount of his work would be very suspicious coming from a white guy.

But then i saw that they were having three day sale on BJ's ($2/pint) and they played:

Cowboy Junkies-A Common Disaster
Starland Vocal Band-Afternoon Delight

Then i went to Whole Foods, where i head

Yes, played right after "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, which was a close runner-up, and arguable a better grocery store song.

Trader Joes: J Geils Band-Love Stinks

I got my physical today. No comments about my hands from the doctor except that they felt really good on her.

Anyway, on the way home I stopped at Trader Joes. There was a slightly disheveled middle aged white guy going around telling everyone (me included) that “Hey did you hear the Redskins got a new coach.  He’s Chinese. His name is Win One Soon.”

Then after he had my attention, he told me the Astros hired Dusty Baker as their manager. “Why can’t the Nationals get Dusty Baker as their manager?” (Um, Maybe because they just won a World Series with Dave Martinez?)

Then he asked what I thought about the impeachment hearings, and trying to be as unengaging as possible, I said "They're interesting." And he said "I'll tell you what I think. They shouldn't even be having them. That guy should be in jail."

Then he asked “Turkey in a can can’t possibly be healthy, can it? I tell you what’s not healthy, fruit in a can. I tell you what else is not healthy, fried foods. McDonalds? Not healthy (gives thumbs down). Burger King Not healthy (gives thumbs down). Papa John’s? Not healthy (gives thumbs down). Dominoes?  Not healthy (gives thumbs down). Wendy’s? Not healthy (gives thumbs down). Hardees? Not healthy (gives thumbs down). That place down the street, Subway? Not healthy (gives thumbs down). I tell you what is healthy, Chipotle. That’s where I’m going right now.”

Ok, see ya.

Is it any better/cheaper than Papa Johns? We do the Wizards/Nationals 50% discounted Papa Johns once in a while but frankly I'm sick of garbage pizza. Whole Foods has a half priced frozen pizza night, and I'm sure their pizza is better than PJ's.

I don't think I've had PJ's pizza purposely since the 90's, but if it's as bad as it was then, then Dominos is MUCH better. All I know is that you can get two medium/two topping pies for $5.99 each and we participate in this luxury at least once a month.

I just asked my 12 yo to compare Dominos to PJ, and she said "Dominos is bad."

While I'm inclined to believe you over my 12 yo, I'm also inclined to prefer my wife's homemade for taste and value, and my own pita pizzas for taste, convenience, and value.

Oh, yeah also stopped at WF to exchange some La Croix.

Lots to unpack here...

1. You returuend La Croix?
2. There is no way your wife's pizza is cheaper than $5.99 when after all ingredients are procured.
3. How is anything more convenient than an app that sends a pizza to your door in less than 30 mins?

3. How is anything more convenient than an app that sends a pizza to your door in less than 30 mins?

1. $3.20 a 12 pk after sale and Prime discount. But I grabbed key lime, thinking it was regular lime. Though we like key lime stuff in general, the La Croix key lime has something offputting about it. You drink La Croix? Which do you recommend? BTW, our daughter was the one who turned us onto flavored water but now she refuses to drink it and prefers stevia soda. My kid is about the least healthy eating person I know. Anyway, it was an exchange, not a return.

2. Yeah I don't know what her pizza costs. But Dominoes would be $5.99 plus tax and delivery tip. So there's that.

3. I can make a pita pizza in less than 30 mins and get the self-satisfaction of DIY. If I'm going to eat food made by others, I prefer to get food that others clearly are superior to me at making, like Indian food and Other Half's ipa's.

But I'll give Dominos a shot sometime, based on your rec.

Proclaimers-500 Miles.

When I was 22 i lived in London for a summer. One night i went to a club and someone approached me to tell me that their Scottish friend fancied me and thought i looked like the Proclaimers, with my short hair and glasses.. I did try talking to her but i couldn't understand a word she was saying in a loud club and with her accent. Maybe she should have told me i looked like Bros.

When I was 22 I shared an apartment on campus with three friends...one of them was named “Leith” and he had hundreds of CDs including The Proclaimers “Sunshine on Leith” so we listened to the 500 miles song...

(Adding story about girl to make story more James Fordian) I had a crush on this girl Anne, introduced her to Leith, and of course they started dating and eventually got married! they live in Philly and we’ve hung out with the kids...can’t say I have kept in touch with many other people from college

Back to the song, it became a hit years later, I think, when it was included in Benny and Joon

Or I could have it all backwards

Yes, you do have the song story right. My story took place in 1989, though i was still well aware of who the Proclaimers were....guess we both lost the girl, but did ok anyway...

Which part?

The Harris Teeter part. And the IPA's part. Can't believe i risked my health for a gaggle of bananas and two jars of antacids. Hopefully, my wife has better luck tomorrow of Friday morning at our local Giant with a big stock up of essentials.

Best song i heard while at HT was REM-Losing My Religion, which seems a tad more appropriate.

My poor diet daughter has been begging to go to the grocery store with her mother (she doesn't beg to go with me because i refuse to give in to her demands for garbage food.) so she can nag her mom into buying a bunch of crap.

I'm being a good parent by saying only one person needs to go to the grocery store at a time, and it's not the one who had pneumonia when she was a toddler, right?

Well it was 100% intended as a joke. Sorry the internet isn't as transparent as I'd like it to be.

Jokes aside, I'm not Chinese, but I think this person's comment on another internet source sums it up well:

Our family emigrated from China. I'm okay with Trump calling it a Chinese virus.

Ignorant people can do with that label what they please, but this virus did originate in China, which makes the Chinese label entirely logical and appropriate.

That said, the world has far bigger things to worry about.

Was it a  big deal to you when Don Lemon, Sanjay Gupta and Mika Brezezinski, all called it the "Chinese Coronavirus", or just when Trump did?

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/china-trolling-world-and-avoiding-blame/608332/

The evidence of China’s deliberate cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan is a matter of public record. In suppressing information about the virus, doing little to contain it, and allowing it to spread unchecked in the crucial early days and weeks, the regime imperiled not only its own country and its own citizens but also the more than 100 nations now facing their own potentially devastating outbreaks. More perniciously, the Chinese government censored and detained those brave doctors and whistleblowers who attempted to sound the alarm and warn their fellow citizens when they understood the gravity of what was to come.

Some American commentators and Democratic politicians are aghast at Donald Trump and Republicans for referring to the pandemic as the “Wuhan virus” and repeatedly pointing to China as the source of the pandemic. In naming the disease COVID-19, the World Health Organization specifically avoided mentioning Wuhan. Yet in de-emphasizing where the epidemic began (something China has been aggressively pushing for), we run the risk of obscuring Beijing’s role in letting the disease spread beyond its borders.

China has a history of mishandling outbreaks, including SARS in 2002 and 2003. But Chinese leaders’ negligence in December and January—for well over a month after the first outbreak in Wuhan—far surpasses those bungled responses. The end of last year was the time for authorities to act, and, as Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times has noted, “act decisively they did—not against the virus, but against whistle-blowers who were trying to call attention to the public health threat.”

This is what allowed the virus to spread across the globe. Because the Chinese Communist Party was pretending that there was little to be concerned about, Wuhan was a porous purveyor of the virus. The government only instituted a lockdown in Wuhan on January 23—seven weeks after the virus first appeared. As events in Italy, the United States, Spain, and France have shown, quite a lot can happen in a week, much less seven. By then, mayor Zhou Xianwang admitted that more than 5 million people had already left Wuhan.

If that weren’t enough, we can plumb recent history for an even more damning account. In a 2019 article, Chinese experts warned it was “highly likely that future SARS- or MERS-like coronavirus outbreaks will originate from bats, and there is an increased probability that this will occur in China.” In a 2007 journal article, infectious-disease specialists published a study arguing that “the presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.” It was ignored.

The political scientist Andrew Michta has drawn controversy and accusations of racism for stating what any measured overview of the evidence makes clear. “The question about assigning agency and blame is pretty straightforward to answer,” he writes in The American Interest. The Chinese state, he says, is culpable.

But is this a time for blame? Yes, it is. Accounting for responsibility when a disaster happens—particularly one likely to devastate entire countries, leaving thousands dead—is not beside the point, particularly as Chinese officials move to take advantage of the crisis and launch a disinformation campaign claiming that the U.S. Army introduced the virus.

Well before the new coronavirus spread across American cities, the Chinese regime was already rather creatively trolling U.S. publications, expelling American journalists, and “weaponizing wokeness” over anything it perceived as critical of China’s role in mishandling the epidemic. To hear Chinese spokespeople use the language of racism and prejudice is somewhat surreal, considering this is a regime that has put more than 1 million Muslims and ethnic minorities in “reeducation” camps.

Of course, Americans will have to be vigilant against scapegoating Asians in general or the Chinese people in particular. With one of the highest infection rates and death tolls, Chinese citizens have suffered enough. The Chinese leadership, however, is another matter. A government is not a race. It’s a regime—and easily one of the worst and most brutal in our lifetime. Criticizing authoritarian regimes for what they do outside their own borders and to their own people is simply calling things as they are. To do otherwise is to forgo analysis and accuracy in the name of assuaging a regime that deserves no such consideration.

"WHO CRITICIZES STIGMATIZING LANGUAGE At yesterday’s WHO COVID-19 press conference, a senior WHO official denounced the use of stigmatizing language and terminology with respect to COVID-19 and other diseases. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, noted the importance of adhering to the accepted and appropriate terminology for infectious diseases in order to reduce the stigma and negative connotations for individuals and populations associated with slang terms. The comments follow recent pushback against the repeated use of unofficial and stigmatizing terms, including by US President Donald Trump. The official and accepted terms are SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) when referring to the virus or infection and COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) when referring to the disease or symptoms. These terms were selected based on existing WHO guidance, which aims to reduce stigma associated with a particular place, group of people, animal, or others that was common under historical virus and disease naming practices that often referred to how or where they were first discovered."

I always wear mask at any indoor establishment. I give the dirty eye to any who aren't.

Yesterday, we hiked at a trail on VA that was not very crowded. Like maybe we encountered 15 people in 4+ hours, none of whom we came closer than six feet to.

Then we went to Powers Farm Brewery. Outdoor table service. Picnic tables set apart very well. Most people not wearing masks. We put ours on when the masked server came to our table. Altogether, pretty comfortable.

THen we went to an outdoor ice cream place. Takeaway service only. Markings on ground where to stand, so parties 6 feet away from each other> Most people weren't masked. Wife and I were, daughter wasn't.

We drove through downtown Warrenton. Outdoor tables were too close together, and very few people walking around with masks. We had no plans to stop anyway, but probably too crowded and germy for our comfort.

Not sure why i typed all that. No grocery store music. Our first day out in VA since 2019. Was fairly comfortable.

Yes... some artists music has aged very poorly... Crapton is one...

I think Phoebe is wrong to call him a racist

Frankly she sounds kind of like an idiot

Crapton was in pretty rough shape in the 70s and drunkenly made some racist comments which he has apologized for dozens of times

Elvis Costello has done something similar

This whole cancel culture is idiotic

A smarter person could have said something about all the work he has done with Crossroads...how he has disowned those statements about Enoch Powell...how he has come a long way

But Crapton is an easy target..just read his autobiography...it’s all there.....like I said his music has aged so poorly it’s hard to envision anyone under 40 being into him...

I don’t like his music and he seems like a pretty fucked up guy but I wouldn’t take a shot at him publicly if I were a musician

Kind of reminds me of Crapton’s friend Phil... why does everyone feel like taking a shot at him?

It might just be generation vs generation thing

Glad to see the twins giving Phil some love

I didn't get your Twins ref, meant to ask
no didn't see that

Oh that reaction video thing...I hate that stuff
I guess that is good for Phil's bottom line and legacy

I will say, I really don't love any Genesis stuff before and after
never did it for me
I do love Illegal Alien, but that's about it

This line is funny
in 2009, journalist Mark Lawson told how Collins's media profile had shifted from "pop's Mr. Nice guy, patron saint of ordinary blokes", to someone accused of "blandness, tax exile and ending a marriage by sending a fax".

Phil phatigue has really set in.

Phil fatigue did set in but nevertheless it remains a fact that he might be the best triple threat - singer, songwriter and instrumentalist-of the past 50 years.

I don’t think people realize what a body of work the guy put together 1970ish-1990

One may hate the gated snare drum sound he pioneered but it is arguably the sound of the 1980s

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N6L_BG0Qhg0

His session work is everywhere...he has a whole box set focused on it “Plays well with others”...production work...You name it...you may not dig him but everyone you do dig wanted him on drums

Getting back on topic, at Trader Joe's Glover Park:
Spandau Ballet  "True"

I appreciate this song a lot more now than I did when it came out.
TJ's was rockin' the '80s, I also heard
The Smiths "How Soon is Now"

I just bought a German LP pressing of the True album...German presses are best

The other song on it that is pure gold is Gold!

Tony Hadley really had some great pipes

It’s such a great 80s tune...

Never a huge Spandau fan...the guitarist who wrote all the songs wa touring with Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets so Sidehatch and I saw him

That’s all I got Twangirl!

I swear, yesterday was Covidiot day at the Springfield Giant. I would estimate that 1 out of every three customers was not wearing a mask. Come on people, I know it's not mandatory, and I know the rates are starting to fall again, but the case numbers are still really, really high right now.

Anyway, the  best song I heard is dedicated to those people.

Save a Prayer by Duran Duran

I feel like I research all of our songs when I go to buy toothpaste at CVS. Who knew that we were going to make perfect music for retail shopping? I’m picking through ripe tomatoes and I get a journey of our recorded history! (https://wtop.com/entertainment/2023/07/after-blockbuster-push-revival-in-barbie-matchbox-twenty-rocks-jiffy-lube-live/)

Maybe my favorite song….

Not sure I want to hear it in a super market

At a Target maybe, but definitely not at a Walmart.

I'd say it's a department store that also sells tickets, rather than a ticket seller that sells ladies undergarments.

Name the store or I call shenanigans
well there was some shenaging going on (what is the active verb for this)
I was in a guapos (takeout?) in Potomac Mills and was like...that's "back in the chain gang", but that is not Chrissy
so that is how I got there and how I was not in fact shopping for groceries
it's all lies and the threads are unraveling

Did you Shazam it?
you ask that like you don't already know the answer
I'm not even sure I'd spell y right

HEB, South Austin

Gin Blossoms "Found Out About You"

Reminded me of the show we put together in 1992 (?). King Missile had the date, Gin Blossoms and The Rev. Horton Heat were looking for the same date, so we put 'em all together. Gin Blossoms played first, probably their first time in, then the Rev Horton Heat, they'd never played the club before. Kind of a weird lineup, but it all worked out and all went on to have long careers. King Missile may have been touring on the album with "Detachable Penis", it was certainly around that time. Gin Blossoms and The Rev came back as headliners not long after.
Good times!

Annandale Goodwill - The Specials-Ghost Town

Fairfax Goodwill -Blue Oyster Cult -Joan Crawford Has Risen From the Grave

Lots of good thrift finds, my wife is going to hate is bringing more clutter into her house.

Such a great song…always find it hard to believe Ronnie Wood then in Faces sings it and not Ronnie Lane who wrote it because only a few years later on his solo albums his voice sounds so much more ragged.

We added it to the playlist for my father in law’s memorial about a month ago.

Rod Stewart who was in Faces sang it- finally - a while back and Ronnie’s version is still the best.

There was another good one too, but I'm forgetting what it was.
