Title: Live in the Age of Covid19
Post by: challenged on March 16, 2020, 02:04:18 pm
Me: start topic

You: post livestreams, links to live performances going on on the webster.

****Include the link or at least some clues....facebook, insta, stageit, ymp...****

All of us: buy such livestreams, and merch.

A world without live music is a heartbreaking thing. As a musician my whole life has been dedicated to gathering people together. I never imagined a time when bringing people together would be impossible. But nevertheless, here we are.

In light of that, we're going to be trying out some new approaches to hopefully mitigate the isolation, and help keep the lights on for us as a business in the meantime. Today we're launching something we're calling "Personal Concerts". What that means is that you can pick a time and you and some friends (up to 5 connections total) can jump on a video connection with Joe and he'll play 3 songs just for you. (Requests are welcome and encouraged!) In addition you'll get 2 guest list spots to any headline show in the future.

We're also going to be doing a number of free streaming shows that will be announced shortly. We fully understand that a lot of you are in uncertain financial times just like we are, and don't want money to be an impediment to enjoying a night of music. Stay tuned to our socials and email list for details on those.

This is a whole new world for all of us, so bear with us if there are some hiccups on the tech side. Hopefully this becomes a cool way for all of us to connect until the time comes when we can get back to being together in the same room.

See below for the available dates....we'll be adding more each week so check back if you don't see a time that works.

“For the Italians who inspired it… for the Irish… for ANYONE who this St. Patrick’s day is in a tight spot and still singing. For the doctors, nurses, carers on the front line, it's you we’re singing to,” he captioned the video.

“A little postcard from bubblin' Dublin on St Patrick’s Day,” the Irish singer says at the start of the clip. “A little tune made up here about an hour ago. I think it’s called ‘Let Your Love Be Known.’ Let us know what you think.”

here's the thing: you can't teach tone.  you can't teach soul.  and santana (like hendrix) is all tone & soul.  i've watched a few guitar tutorials with carlos and they're all cosmic debris: he'll start to talk about a technique but will quickly devolve into unhelpful instructions like "you just gotta feel it" and "put your feelings into your fingers".  he might as well say "either you got it or you don't".

however, he can't teach.  at least not beginners or intermediate players.  maybe if you achieve full technical proficiency and you don't need a teacher, you need a guru - i could see carlos rockin' that role.  but if you want to learn how to play "black magic woman" like he does, don't ask him.

But other than that I got a ton of great live dvds and blue rays

Recently a friend gave me some dvds with videos and interviews he shot

But honestly it’s not like I have nothing to do...I got two kids and I still have to make sure they are somewhat doing some school stuff...this week I got like 10,099 emails from their teachers about all the stuff they have to do on google school boards and such

Our Staff. Our Venues. Our Artists. Our Community.

We always say we have the best staff in the world, and right now they need us more than ever.

The prohibition of gatherings in the city was just extended to April 25, which frankly, is painful. The majority of our hourly staff is effectively out of work until we are able to reopen, which is why we've created the I.M.P. Family Fund to assist in these difficult times.

Starting right now, I.M.P. will match the value of every gift card purchased in the next week (through March 28th) with a donation to the I.M.P. Family Fund. Your gift card purchase is really a double whammy. Not only does it help our staff now, it is support for future concerts, artists and the venues when we reopen. (We cannot wait for that day!) What’s more, Friends With Benefits members will earn double points on the gift card purchase.

So, head on over to our merch page (https://930-club.myshopify.com/products/9-30-gift-card), and grab a gift card (or maybe a few) today to use for tickets to a future show, merch or concessions, and know that the same amount will go towards helping out our stellar team.

CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE A GIFT CARD! (https://930-club.myshopify.com/products/9-30-gift-card)

We’ve heard from some of you that you’d like to make a donation outright, or donate your refund from a postponed or canceled show. We’ve set up a link for you to do that HERE (https://930-club.myshopify.com/products/i-m-p-family-fund).

Thanks so much for your support in this difficult time. We can’t wait to be shoulder to shoulder with you again soon! We miss you. We really do.

1. John Vanderslice on Instagram Live every few days is a sustaining force in my life right now.
2. I am so happy that I usually recorded one or more songs at the concerts I attended; and I am happy that others did as well. There is so much joy to be had in seeing concerts that I attended, or others attended, during this time of no concerts.
3. Stay home, wash your hands. Long Island, from whence I came, has its hospitals and EMS under siege, and it has been predicted that we are a week or two away from being similarly inundated.

Live Nation says its total cash and cash equivalents balance is $3.3 billion, including $914 million free cash and $2.0 billion of event-related deferred revenue.
would suck to burn through all that tho...
although they still have 14 million tix postponed...not canceled.(only 1 mil were canceled/refunded so far)

gotta imagine if those are canceled, the math gets different fast

Twitch also at some point included features that would allow DJs to stream as well.  I suspect Bands are probably taking advantage of that as well.

I was looking into possibly DJing online, but it’s virtually impossible to do it legally and licensed now a days. I think live365 is the only provider left  that will pay the fees owed Soundexchange, etc.  Otherwise, one is on their own to pay directly which isn’t worth the hassle.

I guess copyright be damned these days given all the DJs streaming and people doing covers over Facebook, etc.

I did see at least one band get nailed for performing their own songs though.

I've tuned in late night to a few of ?questlove's streaming sessions, pretty damn amazing, especially his Bill Wither's party a few weeks back. I don't see how anyone could stop you stream via IG or Facebook. Do it!

The more I look into the more I realize it’s just not worth the hassle. There lots of tricks to get around the fact that all Fb\IG streams are being monitored for content violations, just not worth trying to bend the rules.  Would rather not get flagged by the overlords.

I admittedly don't know these rules, nor would I follow them if I did... but to clarify, are you saying someone like ?uestlove isn't allowed to be streaming misc. songs over IG/FB/etc?

Live a little, you may get Covid tomorrow! If it would bring you fun and joy for an hour, do it! In reality, how many people are going to tune into your show?? In the 10's?? 100's? It would be a blip on the interweb radar.

Pretty sad, popped into G Love's live IG last night and he had about 100ish listeners... Take note kosmo.

Anyway, considering he was going to donate the $14 he raised to the 930 club, you'd think they would've promoted the event.

G Love doesn’t have that many big fans and there are a ton of different livestream options and people have lives

I thought it was a really cool thing of G Love to do...yes he has played 930 like 20 times but lately he has been playing non IMP affiliated smaller venues so for him to do this

I posted a link to it on the IMP staff Facebook group and I know staff really appreciated it

Will Eastman, owner of U St Music Hall, says the venue is done in six months if they don't get concerts back (which is unlikely to happen IMO). Super dire.

The worst part is that the shitty FSS is likely to survive because it has Live Nation backing it and LN hired a lobbyist.

Local NIVA members include the 9:30 Club and other I.M.P. venues The Anthem, Merriweather Post Pavilion and the Lincoln Theatre. Other member venues in D.C. include the Black Cat, The Hamilton Live, DC9 Nightclub, Songbyrd Music House, Union Stage and the All Things Go Music Festival. Jammin Java in Vienna and the Birchmere in Alexandria are also members, as is the Foundry in Columbia, Maryland, and a handful of other venues in the Baltimore area.

Yes that makes sense....

They have no choice

But I doubt Live Nation had to hire much in the way of lobbyists

They must have a full time lobbying arrangement already....so they have an advantage

They must be used to greasing palms...remember they had to get the LN-TM merger past regulators etc

I'm actually burnt out on shitty sound quality.

I would rather they record something with decent quality, compile it and pretend that it's "live"ish than have all of these jump from one web cam to the next using shit pickup mics to keep the live feel.

The impact on some industries due to this is going to be worse than the great depression
I'm not advocating putting everything at risk to save the entertainment industry, but 2020 and 2021 EVERYONE is going to be digging themselves out of a hole and there are going to be a lot of destroyed lives of people who did everything by the books

The future of independent live music is at stake. Today we’re asking for your voice to save it. 9:30 Club, The Anthem, Lincoln Theatre, and Merriweather Post Pavilion have joined more than 1,000 other venues to form the NIVA - National Independent Venue Association
. We sent a letter to Congress asking for crucial support needed independent venues to weather this shutdown. Now we are asking you to do the same. Please consider sending a message to your congressional representatives letting them know you want to see independent live music survive and thrive in DC

My life is pretty much Twitter listening parties between 3 and 6pm these days.  And the twitter party replay site works really well, I've gone back to that for a few of the albums I didn't listen while they were tweeting about them.  Listening to Gwenno's album Le Kov which she did with Gruff Rhys and sung in Cornish was really great with the insights.

Looking forward to Heaven 17 tonight and Haircut 100 and New Order tomorrow.

Send your congressmen/women a message about live music
Without any inside knowledge of their ledger sheets, I feel IMP is in a better position to weather this than most independent venues. They laid off/furloughed their staff relatively early in this whole thing and slow-playing ticket refunds help with cashflow. If things get too dire, unlike other small venues, they can always fall back on liquidating Seth's secret sex apartments to get them through.

Nightclubs basically make most of their money on alcohol sales. I hope 930 was fairly uh...liquid before this hit. I doubt most businesses had enough cash to float 6 months of expenses.

Its not a true 6 months of expenses though, to be fair. Rent, sure same (unless you have a cool landlord who gives you some abatement -- we got this on like 15 of our 40 locations). Utilities, probably down a little. Labor cost, potentially can be close to nil.

Didn’t I write about this weeks ago?
Anyways first off I have no knowledge of what IMP is doing but I think they own 930 building, and on Lincoln and MPP I doubt  they have to pay rent at this time...they are operator on those

The big one is rent on Anthem and I would think some arrangement was made with the Wharf developer

Of course there are a ton of other costs and IMP is doing stuff for staff like running a food pantry for which they have to pay staff...I think a lot of the full time staff continues to work...someone is keeping up the social media posts, negotiating with promoters and artists on suspensions, paying the bills, lobbying for support, etc

I just think this is a real big hit...even when you reopen you can’t assume sales will be what they were right? What about shows you were counting on X tickets sold to make a profit? Can you renegotiate with artists? It’s really complex

What about staff? The more this goes on the more people might have to move on and find other work? Move back home (a lot of staff are really young folks)?

It’s a bitch all around...I am sure Donna knows what she is doing though

WWOZ's 8 day Jazz Festing in Place was fucking amazing. What a fantastic idea and what a fantastic selection of sets.

It's over now (just finished an hour ago) but they are now playing Angelique Kidjo's performance from 1999 at Jazz Fest which is equally fantastic.

There's only a few bright spots in this pandemic, but this decision by the radio station is one of them. They had folks tuned in all over the world judging by social media.

Not sure how long it will be up, as they took down a Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott concert within a day or two after it premiered.  It was a good concert as well running through lots of Housemartins, Beautiful South and solo tracks.

Yes 1st world problem, but no GA shows for a long time could induce some serious sidehatch depression

Some industry folks have suggested smaller venues could reopen sooner with social distancing measures put in place. Possible or pipe dream?

“Maybe not forever, but for a long time, there's not going to be GA (standing room) shows. I don't know if we'll ever see them again.

Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression – Live at the Royal Albert Hall will premiere on the Eagle Rock YouTube channel from 19:30 BST on Wednesday 13 May 2020 and will be available to stream for free around the world. You can watch set a reminder and watch the performance when released, here:

The tour and accompanying album saw Iggy joined by Queens of the Stone Age musicians Josh Homme, Dean Fertita and Troy Van Leeuwen, as well as Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. The gig saw the 69-year-old icon deliver “the performance of his life” (Classic Rock).

I'll say that I was completely burnt out on Wilco for many many years... but after finishing Tweedy's book last week mixed with watching him on his wife's stream a few nights a week, I'm slowly trying to get back on board. I'm still having a hard time liking really any album from the past five years or so, minus the Tweedy double album.
