Title: Qobuz
Post by: kosmo vinyl on April 15, 2020, 12:14:50 pm
I’ve been meaning to post about Qobuz for awhile for those that use other streaming services. I’ve been using it for several months and it’s biggest advantage over most is it streams at a higher quality then most. If your like me and tend to listen to entire albums this a great service. I’m able to download CD quality tracks for listening while I’m the car from my phone. Streaming over Wi-Fi gets either CD quality or if you have the right equipment HI-Rez quality.

Compared to Spotify the catalog isn’t as large, but in general I can find what I want to listen to. It’s doesn’t do algorithmic suggestions, or create playlists for users. It’s also a little more expensive

This is a really cool thing for the service to do, passing back more revenue to artists.

If you are using an iPhone be sure to sign up with Quboz directly as if you do it through the Apple store, they tack on an extra fee.

"Qobuz Studio Premier, which includes unlimited Hi-Res and lossless music streaming, is available as a one month free trial, after which customers are charged $14.99 per month. During “Gimme Shelter”, for all new subscribers, Qobuz will waive its usual commission on that fee during the first month that they pay for. These commissions will be donated by Qobuz to rightsholders for redistribution or charitable gift to their artists and writers."

I jokingly referred  to Qobuz as a streaming service for aging dudes as the highlighted new releases on Friday are often the polar opposite from Spotify.  i.e. I've heard of most of the them :p

no worries in retrospect it does look a little botish..  but I'm happy with the service it can be a little wonky sometimes when streaming over chromecast, etc.  the UI is not as slick as others.  haven't dived into the purchasing of music  from Qobuz as I don't have the equipment to really take advantage of the Hi-Rez files.

just because it doesn't completely spy on your every movement and yes it's K-pop selection is a little lacking but that's so last year for me at this point, i've shifted to Welsh bands at the moment.

I read that statement and kind of felt the same way...but I guess the question is...do you want to support the artists you like or big corps?

Tidal (.013) and napster (.019) would look good on this graph

The best way to support musicians you care about is to buy their albums on CD or digitally from Bandcamp, go to their concerts, buy their merchandise, join their fan clubs, follow them on Instagram, subscribe to their Patreons, and so on. That way, they will get far more of your cash than they would get from Spotify and similar services. Better than that, they will feel their work is appreciated, which is what most artists actually want.

They do have human created playlists and also have their own set of writers doing reviews and articles.  (almost typed that dreaded curated word instead of created) You can get top tracks and so forth for artists and recommendation to similar artists.  And I fully admit that I peek at some of the playlists Spotify creates for me, especially for new releases.  They just don't do auto generated streams like Pandora.

I tend to stream a lot of stuff I already own and made a decent haul at Bandcamp recently.

I've bought several album downloads from them (when not on Bandcamp). They often have the lowest price for lossless.
