Title: 2021 Albums
Post by: kosmo vinyl on October 30, 2020, 01:06:33 pm
It was bound to happen soon or later...

New Matthew Sweet - Catspaw out 1/15

https://www.brooklynvegan.com/matthew-sweet-announces-new-album-shares-at-a-loss

The record, which he finished right before pandemic lockdown, is his first truly "solo" effort; he plays everything on the album except drums, which were played by longtime collaborator Ric Menck.

on her site and the bandcamp site says releases February 26, 2021
weird that the Matador doesn't and when I ordered didn't even say that it would ship in late feb?

Wow. Very interested in hearing that. Great period for KJ recordings. Not gonna pay $55 for it tho.

Having to wait another two months for the Pandemonium reissue is bad enough.

looks like nothing but silly love songs
releases January 29, 2021

wondering if it will be the King Khan Unlimited band for this, currently listed as a King Khan release?
I miss the Shrines, that LP (and that tour) was one of my favorites of the decade

Single is decent, catchy title

^ gawd i hate that "psychedelic doodle" style of drawing... i used to scribble that shit in the margins of my notebooks too.  i can't imagine why anyone would choose to put that style of graphic as the public face of their art.

I agree, I really dislike the style, but if 500 of these are sold, I'd be surprised

The artist actually is somewhat infamous (and I just learned this too)
Boiled Angel was an independent comic book by Florida-based underground comic book artist Mike Diana in the early 1990s. The comic contained graphic depictions of a variety of taboo and gory subject matters. It effectively became the first comic book in the United States to cause its creator to be convicted for artistic obscenity.

award for most annoying "musicians" goes to:

US toddler to release debut album recorded in the womb (https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/feb/03/us-toddler-to-release-debut-album-recorded-in-the-womb)
Luca Yupanqui was recorded by her parents using ‘biosonic MIDI technology’

(https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/6bd5a73586f4d238823541c1c04f33e41c5d09b6/0_345_1200_720/master/1200.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=format&fit=max&s=9cc3360aa9fa31daf8e875e88a74cf2c)

An American toddler, Luca Yupanqui, is gearing up to release her debut album, the world’s first LP made from sounds inside the womb.

Her parents are Elizabeth Hart, a member of psych-rock band Psychic Ills, and musician Iván Diaz Mathé, who has worked with Lee “Scratch” Perry and others. In five hour-long “joint meditation” sessions, they recorded Yupanqui in utero via electrodes on Hart’s abdomen, and using “biosonic MIDI technology” transcribed the vibrations they picked up into synthesisers.

The recordings were then edited down, with Hart and Diaz Mathé “trying to intervene as little as possible, allowing Luca’s message to exist in its raw form”, according to a statement. The album, Sounds of the Unborn, will be released on 2 April.

(link to youtube of a track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90g9Vqvx3yg))

Already exhibiting the kind of confidence required by rock stars, Yupanqui is apparently a fan of her own work. “Her awareness of what was happening was astounding,” said label Sacred Bones, regarding the mixing sessions when Yupanqui was a baby. “She would open her eyes wide and stare at her parents, seemingly recognising her own sounds from the womb, knowing that they were revisiting those rituals that made them come together as one.”

OMG... the pretentiousness...

A moment of silence for Julian's bank account, the new versions of Taylor's albums are headed his way

"I’m thrilled to tell you that my new version of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) is done and will be with you soon. It has 26 songs including 6 never before released songs from the vault. Love Story (Taylor’s Version) will be out tonight."

Also, new Django Django out tomorrow called "Glowing In The Dark"

And I'm enjoying the new Celeste album, not getting the indie buzz of Arlo Parks, but a great record nonetheless.

I’m really enjoying the new  Billie Joe Armstrong  covers album “No Fun Mondays”. It’s like going into a diner with a really great jukebox. Sometimes you just need some comfort food and good tunes.  As Keef and Mick once said "I said I know it's only rock 'n' roll but I like it"

Maybe, or maybe it was this one:

Grohl’s lawful-good lifestyle presents an eternal conflict between being unable to hate the guy and being unable to enjoy the music he continues to make.

Or maybe it was something else:

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/foo-fighters-medicine-at-midnight/

What is  a "lawful-good lifestyle?" Does Dave need to shake things up a little bit and do a shot of tequlla and get a DWI arrest to shake his lawfully good image?

"continue to plow through albums with one thankless goal in mind: to keep the dying institution of rock alive."

i personally don't need to wade through thousands of people cranking out non rock tunes on Soundcloud, i'll stick to rock

like Oasis albums, one shouldn't really pay close attention to the lyrics on a Foo's album.  that said i did catch myself the other day with a chorus from the album bouncing around.

For all the crotchetiness about Pitchfork, its a fairly untenable position for any of you to disagree with any of the following:

- the Foo Fighters/Dave Grohl has not put out good music in at least one decade if not two
- the band's current output is unremarkable and not noteworthy
- people who listen to the band's current output are doing so out of some curmudgeonly loyalty to a genre; a genre by whose standards the current output is subpar
- Dave Grohl has become an anodyne, milquetoast figure with just the right amount of "loudness" to avoid fully being lumped in with the Frank Turners of the world
- the fanbase of the Foo Fighters is one that is increasingly aging, out of touch, and likely has a favorite chair

This argument is ass, my dude. "I can't be bothered to read an entire review or listen to other music so trust me when I say the Foo Fighters are still great." You're literally bragging about your closemindedness. OK, grandpa.

I haven't heard that album, so can't comment (like some former board characters would)....but it did come out a decade ago. So it wouldn't  disprove his point.

Dave Grohl stopped being a musician who put out interesting music a long time ago. He continues to sell out buildings on the basis of his back catalogue and exists, almost entirely, as a mascot for a certain era of music. This is all very, very similar to Bruce Springsteen. This is probably as spot-on as Pitchfork has been in a long while.

I haven’t listened to the new one. So guilty there.

But I am otherwise pretty up to date on their post-2000 catalog, including Wasting Light. Not my cup o tea. It’s fine for others to like it tho.

Seen them 3 or 4 times - at least once this century. Don’t need to do that again, either.

Gruff Rhys - Seeking New Goods.

Inspired by Mount Paektu, "Seeking New Gods", the latest solo record from Gruff Rhys, sees the Super Furry Animals frontman mythologize a compelling sonic mountain of his own making. Recorded during a short, intensive stint in the Mojave desert as well as Bristol and mixed by legendary Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato, the album’s charming pianos, wild trumpets, cosmic synths and one freewheeling guitar solo pair with a host of warm, personal touches and golden melodies to offer a dazzling view.

RSD 2021   Nada Surf / Cycle Through
Mark your calendars. Record Store Day's response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic this year is to replace the familiar event with two RSD Drops — we're excited that Nada Surf's EP Cycle Through will be released as part of the first of them, on June 12th!

Cycle Through will be the first physical release of tracks that originally appeared on the deluxe edition of Nada Surf's excellent 2020 album Never Not Together. But that's not it! This physical edition will also include "Just Wait (Extended Film Version)" — previously available only as part of the band's short-film collaboration with acclaimed director Mark Pellington.

Pressed on blue vinyl, this RSD version is limited to 1,500 copies — track listing is below.

Click here (https://recordstoreday.com/) for more information on titles in the RSD Drops Lists and to find a participating store near you.

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie and Savages vocalist Jehnny Beth are teaming up for a collaborative album. Inspired by classic country soul duets like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris’ “Grievous Angel” and George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s “We Go Together,” they got together to record Utopian Ashes, a concept album about the slow disintegration of a failing marriage. Fun stuff!

Utopian Ashes is out 7/2 via Third Man Records.

Dischord 200 (https://boxset.dischord.com/)

To mark our 40th year, we have created Dischord 200, a Box Set containing reissues of our first 6 releases in their original 7″ vinyl format as well as a 12-page booklet.  All records have been remastered, all sleeves & lyric sheets reproduced from original art.

We have no idea of how many of these we should press, so we’ve decided to let the pre-orders make the call. This will be a mail-order only release and the window to place orders will be limited to one month (May 11th until June 11th, 2021). The Box Sets can only be shipped one at a time, so each order is limited to one.  If you want more, you’ll have to make multiple orders.

PLEASE NOTE: The scale of this project combined with the delays at pressing plants have led us to believe that we may not be able to deliver the final piece until the end of 2021.

While not cheap, I have no doubt that almost all other labels would have charged more, if not twice as much (thank gawd it's not Domino).

About ten- fifteen years ago I heard this band Japan and realized what a huge influence on Duran Duran they were.. like huge..them and Roxy Music

i'm not sure why a big name like Moz needs a label?  I just don't think it would be that hard for him to do it via Bandcamp and keep most of the cash

I agree but he is used to the old ways

Also gives him someone to blame and bitch about when record doesn’t sell

I guess he prefers getting an advance to fronting money to produce the stuff and sell it himself (which I think would be more profitable for him)... I am sure he looks at it as a step down to not have a record label

TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY TO ORDER THIS!!!

I like the stuff Krys has done with Costello (best part of last album “Hey clock face”) but for this project my understanding is they just overlaid new vocals on the existing instrumental tracks…

I am curious to hear it in good time as it’s my favorite EC album and I am a big fan of some of the singers (particularly Fito Paez)

No straying from the tried and true Friday release date

Not sure when American labels conformed to the international Friday release day. It had been Tuesday for a long time, and Monday before that. I think the change to Tuesday was so that most stores had a better chance of having new stuff in stock. Friday's actually terrible for a lot of chains because if they sold out on Friday, they usually couldn't get more until Monday.

Of course, this is practically moot now because of streaming....

It was Monday when I was growing up.   I remember making many a trip to Hollywood on a Sunday night for the midnight (Monday) release of albums.

Hiss Golden Messenger Announces a "Contemplative Holiday Album," Out October 22 (https://indyweek.com/music/news/hiss-golden-messenger-announces-new-album/)

Perhaps it's not too early to start listening to holiday music, after all: M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger announced a "new kind of holiday album," O Come All Ye Faithful, out Friday, October 22 on Merge Records. The news is accompanied by a single from the album, "Grace."

A kitschy holiday album is not out of step for most musicians, but O Come All Ye Faithful cleaves to the quieter, more soulful sounds of the season, with lush, spacious droning and contributions from Aoife O’Donovan, Nathaniel Rateliff, Erin Rae, Buddy Miller, and members of M.C. Taylor's extended family.

I listened to this primarily by accident the other day... not bad.

I highly recommend MC Taylor's ongoing dub/reggae/ska mix that he posts on Spotify.

A second posthumous album from emo-rap trailblazer Juice WRLD called Fighting Demons will arrive on December 10, and it'll feature new song "Already Dead," which proves that Juice WRLD really had a ton of great material in his vault when he passed at just 21 years old

Lucinda Williams has a Christmas album out as a part of her cover’s series called Lu’s Jukebox

Lu's Jukebox, Vol. 5: Have Yourself a Rockin' Little Christmas With Lucinda

And Starsky will pleased to know none of these are streaming only available for purchase.
