Been a couple of only albums I would be interested in announced already i.e. Hamish Hawk, but it was this one that I would have posted as it just popped up today...

Secret Machines
The Moth, The Lizard, and the Secret Machines
2/17

"This is their second album since getting back together and is a bit of a "lost" record, as it stems from recordings originally made in 2010 and then reworked following 2020’s return"

first single "There's No Starting Over" found here

The Lathums
From Nothing To A Little Bit More
2/24
Island

first single "Say My Name" is out about on the various streaming sites...

hopefully they'll tour the US again and weirdly after having a pinned tweet about the absence of their bass player, they months later announce he's left the band... kinda awkward letting that info just sit there that long, must have been legal issues or summut..

New Iggy Pop album out in January…preorders are his website including

https://store.iggypop.com/en/iggy-pop/every-loser-black-vinyl-with-autographed-poster/075678626166.html

Really hoping he plays a DC live show but sort of doubtful he will…. It’s almost like other than festivals he won’t do the US. Now in France he doesn’t seem to mind playing small artsy venues…guess he just likes playing live in Europe…can’t say I blame him for doing what he wants at this point…

Outta Sync
April 28th

My debut solo album 'Outta Sync’ drops 28th April 2023 - kick started by Youth & produced by Gaudi it's basically the soundtrack of my mind with some cool bass lines & features the likes of Terry Hall, Hollie Cook, Wayne Coyne & Zoe Devlin Love.

Don Letts has been in and around music since the 70s
was even in B.A.D.

but his first solo release

well known for his video work with the clash and b.a.d.  but TIL some of the other iconic vids he did
"Pass the Dutchie"   Musical Youth
"Back on the Chain Gang"   The Pretenders
"Everyday I Write the Book"   Elvis Costello and the Attractions
"Round and Round"   Ratt

was even in B.A.D.

But he's always been on the side, background, or entirely invisible. Putting yourself in front is a bold move no matter who you are.

Really shocked that he did the Ratt video.

yeah i did find the whole first solo album this late in his career a bit odd and based on the first single it sounds like it's going a fun one, not sure i want to spend the money to get the CD shipped from the UK.

I was too, mini-teen hatch LOVED that video (it's horrible, I had a short but big RATT phase, luckily I found punk)

But I agree, he was surely a sideman in b.a.d.

I think U2 was absolutely vital in 1983 around the time of War and Live Under a blood red sky. I remember buying the latter on cassette and they just seemed to be saying something important.

They had a commercial peak with Joshua Tree

A second peak with the reinvention of U2 on Achtung Baby

Not a bad track record. Almost ten years at the top. Working with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno was an inspired move. Go back and listen to Eno’s Ascent and tell me it wasn’t reconfigured for the opening of Where the streets have no name.

Zoo ropa and Pop are good albums.

After that…..

Yeah, but will you buy the album?

NEWSFLASH:  Nobody "buys" albums anymore.  Even the Covid inspired surge of album sales by bored indie dad rockers ended when the restrictions eased.  Album sales are back to losing ~9% per year, a trend that has been going on for over 20 years.

Or look at it this way:  TS sold 1,578,000 units of midnights in the first week of which 1.14 million were pure sales, including 575,000 vinyl LPs and 395,000 CDs (the rest digital purchase, cassettes).  Compare that to Midnights (the album) garnering 549.26 million streams in its first week.

In this time of strife, insanity and confusion, only one band is depraved enough to offer themselves up as herald. Like sin-eaters if sins had to be ingested from a very small spoon, Viagra Boys have consumed the utterly incomprehensible chaos of our era and distilled it into  16 immaculate tracks of
post-truth-cow-funk-kraut-wave-enlightenment.

My wife loved that show, but I wasn't wowed. She doesn't have that much stage presence, and her songs are all mid-tempo samey. I'll listen to the new album, but I'm done seeing her live.

Breaking the family tie, my daughter hates her (but didn't go to the show.)

can confirm
show was good IMO, but she doesn't command the stage, but that's also her schtick
most of her songs do have a similar vibe

I would like to revist this...

I was at a house party show in DC where Lucy was playing
it is the day her album debuted on matador (was released earlier on a small label before)
Since it's a house party, I brough my own beer
And I'm hanging at the merch stand watching the last band, when Lucy walks up and stands next to me waiting for her chance to go on
I congratulated her on the Matador release and said 'would you like a beer?' to which she replied "no thanks"

if that's creepy, we may need to revisit the definition.
but alas, very on brand for a yada comment

The time I met Julien was at a DC 9 show (which Lucy happened to be opening for and I was blown away)
at the end of the show she was hanging out and talking with people at the merch table

Last time I saw sidehatch, he wasn't so sensitive... I made one "creep" comment that was a #joke and everything shit the bed. Additionally, the she/her rockers not accepting beers from pear shaped men was a generalization, not specific to sidesensi.

Thomas Bangalter

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter has announced a new solo album. Mythologies arrives on April 7 (via Erato/Warner Classics). It’s his first independent orchestral work. Bangalter was originally commissioned by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj for the ballet of the same name back in 2021. Billed as a production about the “founding myths that shape the collective imagination,” it was premiered by the Opéra National de Bordeaux and Ballet Preljocaj the following year.

Mythologies is a 90-minute-long score in which Bangalter reimagines his composition style. In a press release, it’s described as “not” drawing on electronic music, but rather “the large-scale traditional force of a symphony and, as such, it embraces the history of orchestral ballet music.”

Perhaps this is just a genre I listen to more than most, but there is wild overlap between "people who compose modern classical music" and "people who make something closer to EDM".I don't know whether this is going to be good or not but just because Daft Punk was Daft Punk sounding doesn't lead me to believe one of their dudes cannot write a decent modern classical piece.

Sadly the days of $24.99 vinyl are over….

Mostly the only records that are $24.99 at the record store are ones from 2021! And online it’s records that are being cleared out.

I mean matador always held the line on prices and the new Belle and Sebastian and YLT are close to or $40!

It really couldn’t be a worse time to get into vinyl…expensive…poor quality…etc

Meanwhile you can’t give away a cd…CD Cellar hardly carries them and most of the new releases they have are probably free promos…

You’d think people would think it’s kind of cool given the Beatles and Stones go way back so it’s a bit of a closing off the circle. Around 60 years ago George Harrison recommended to Decca (the label had passed on the Beatles saying guitar bands were on the way out and Decca had been crying seeing the Beatles success on Parlophone) that they sign the Stones. McCartney and Lennon gifted them one of the Stones first hits: I wanna be your man (I think). The whole Beatles-Stones “rivalry” was manufactured even if my kid gets excited that let it bleed was a response to let it be.

So even if the Stones and Paul put out a track of them using the loo I think it has potential. I mean hell people at live shows really enjoyed the Stones singing Like a rolling stone with Dylan.

Dudes are in their 80s and track will probably underwhelm - how could it not- but I will still give it a chance

Yeah I need to check this out as well

Meanwhile, members of Rancid, Operation Ivy, Trash Talk and The Bronx recently came together to form a new project called Bad Optix.

The new ska-punk band was formed by Jesse Michaels and Rancid guitarist Tim Armstrong, both of whom performed together previously as part of ’80s band Operation Ivy.

Joey Castillo (Circle Jerks, The Bronx) and bassist Spencer Pollard (Trash Talk) complete the supergroup.

this review is also a parody... vulture has out-pitchforked pitchfork

The National Are Now a Parody Act (https://www.vulture.com/2023/05/the-national-first-two-pages-of-frankenstein-critics.html)
Once a cure for melancholy, the National now feel like a cause.

A minor chorus of sneers and dismissals has stalked the National on their long slog to mass acceptance. For two decades, critics have mocked the band as the last refuge of curdling middle-age men who once thought themselves bound for something better. Even the most admiring reviews include secondhand sighs and half-chewed platitudes: “misery,” “torment … self-loathing,” “dour,” “morbid,” “gloomy,” “purgatory,” “mope-rock.” Carl Wilson, chief music critic for Slate, once let out a long runny sneeze of indictment: “Portentous, monotonous, self-conscious, and deficient in character and eccentricity.”

New Queens album “In Times New Roman”

Out June 16th

on the now prerequisite, at least in the UK, multiple colored vinyl variations of which there are five.. with one store over there selling all four colored ones as a bundle

just check also available in the US in the same five colors... $38.23 for one of  color double LPs and 33.89 for black double LPs.

Matador is also selling the vinyl bundle for $200.48

definitely one for the vinyl stupidity twitter feed.

lol no joke.  I finally opted to head to Philly to see them in 2022, but then President Brandon's pandemic stopped me.  Made the trek last year and it was worth the wait.  Closest spot again is Philly in September.

Guided by Voices - WELSHPOOL FRILLIES
Welshpool Frillies finds the gang back together, in a Brooklyn basement with producer Travis Harrison. Much of it was recorded live to tape. The catchy ear worms in these new songs are undeniable, as the kinetic energy of the band is captured in its most raw and pure form. The album is brash, no-frills, and punky, inspired by the wiliness of 90s-era GBV.

release date is July 21st.

Primal Scream
Reverberations (Travelling In Time)
June 14th

not an obligatory greatest hits as I expected, now that they have milked the market for Screamadelica re-issues

it's BBC Radio Sessions & Creation Singles 1985-86 on various limited edition formats...

This is the Primal Scream debut album that never was: 16 perfectly crafted pop nuggets weighing in at just under 35 minutes. This compilation comprises recordings from 1985 to 1986 and includes eleven previously unreleased BBC session recordings  along with all five songs from our first two Creation Records singles.

“We have an album called ‘Nowhere To Go But Up’ coming out in November,” Pollard said. “I think that’s our 16th album with this lineup. It’s incredible. We have kind of a format, a formula, but they’re all a little bit different. Every album has its own personality. We’re actually really pumped about the next album. It’s great. We’re not touring it this year, so we’ll definitely start touring in March. People will have had a chance to digest the album. It’s pretty solid. It sounds really good.”

“I’ve done the demos for the album after that,” Pollard continued. “It’s probably going to come out next August. They’re going to start working on that next. It just never stops. We go from one album to the next.

Vince Clarke
Songs of Silence
Mute
10/17

First ever solo album from him and details you ask?

For the creation of the record Vince set himself two rules – first that the sounds he himself generated for the album would come solely from Eurorack (a modular synthesizer format introduced in the mid-90s) and secondly that each track would be based around one note, maintaining a single key throughout. The resultant pieces, with the Eurorack sound clay then manipulated on Logic Pro, amount to wordless narratives, in which a sense of synthgenerated, cosmic remoteness is often jolted by stark interventions, reminders of the human hand at work amid this machinery.

First track to get everyone in the mood - The Lamentations of Jeremiah

Big fan of Ash and while I primarily buy digital these days via Bandcamp this is a bit of a stretch

THE LIMITED EDITION DIGITAL PRESSING OF RACE THE NIGHT

Each unique Digital Pressing includes:
Track by track walkthrough from the band detailing the stories behind the songs
Exclusive, extended version of 'Like A God'
High quality audio downloads

This of course seals the deal

Numbered edition unique to each owner

I guess this is just another method of trying to get a new album to chart in the UK it's first week, which seems to be the goal for many bands of fate over there.

was just about to post about this...  I have a bunch of her stuff including the 3 CD set that came out awhile back.

I guess what would be of most interest is the unreleased stuff from the sessions for that second album Real which was shelved..  I could take or leave the live stuff...

the never released Stiff 7" single would be fun to own...

the last disc of her collaborations would be of some interest collected together...

hmm shipping isn't so brutal for this like I've seen for other UK sites...  hopefully it's streaming so I can listen the unreleased tracks and go from there.

we've already heard that in 1998 when it was released and I'm sure hutch has the white label acetate anyway

doesn't have to be 'better' but it's someone's interpretation and those can sometimes be better
unless you only listen to All Along the Watchtower by Dylan
