Title: Minority vote...
Post by: dlcjr1775 on September 12, 2005, 02:27:00 am
I'm just posing a question, and I'm interested in all intelligent responses. A little background: I'm 30, single, and white. However, both my parents are adopted, so I have no ethnic connection. I've grown up being taught that all people, no matter skin tone, personal income, or education, deserve to be treated as equals until their actions make you treat them otherwise. All this considered, does anyone think that the Republican party can get 10% of the minority vote in the next election, seeing as they are being somewhat (though not entirely unfairly) scapegoated for the governmental breakdown in the New Orleans evacuation and rescue effort. I can't see it happening. I'm interested in anyone's honest opinion, as this question has been rolling around in my head for the past 5 or 6 days. Thanks for your time.

Well, a couple of points.

All depends who runs for the dems, a lot of Americans seem to vote for the person rather than the party, so if they go for a qualified candidate (Kerry) rather than a handsome, charismatic one, they'll be in trouble.

It most certainly IS Bush's fault that the Katrina evacuation/resscue was such a disaster. His administration, his responsibility, his fault. That just goes with the job. I don't doubt that his God-Squad approach will get him out of it unscathed yet again.

 just my tuppence worth..

If the election were today, yea, probably.  ten percent isn't alot.  With African-Americans,  thats what Republicans generally pull in these days on the national level - without the hurrican factor.  But if you figure in Hispanics, you're talking over fifty percent.  And there are as many Hispanics (roughly) in the nation as there are African-Americans.  Asians, closer to sixty.  But thats a smaller percentage of voters.  Alot can happen between now and November 2008 though.  Bush can spin the hurricane disaster and make himself look a little better.  Or of course, he can become mired in it and it could still be a factor by the next election.  It probably will be.

I can guarantee you that if it had been a democrat in the whitehouse during Katrina, and they had reacted in the same manner, there'd be impeachment proceedings started already....but I'm sure some building/bridge/street in D.C. will get named after this prick when it's all over.

No - easily 85% of Americans vote by party.

the thing is, the republican's don't need the black vote.  they get enough hispanic and asian votes to make up that difference. . .as bad as it sounds, the republican's simply need about 55% of the white vote to win.  and then that is split between male and female- and here, the battleground is for the female vote (voting trends show that males are more likely to vote republican).  for republicans to be successful, they need something like 30-40% of the female vote.  i'm sure ggw has the more precise numbers.

and o'mankie, the federal govt. is not responsible for state and city evacuation plans- the federal govt. is there to assist and then take over when the local govt. can no longer do its job and at its request (that's a whole other thread).  as i'm sure you know, the u.s. is a federal government system, as such, the states still retain (or should retain, in my opinion) a large amount of responsibility for its citizens.

My point exactly....15% of America is a lot of people, especially when the majority for the winner is very rarely more than what??? 4-5%???

Yea, George Bush believes in state's rights except for decisions on:  gay marriage, abortion, women's rights relative to birth control/ru486/family planning on college campuses which receive Federal money...other than that, the Feds. under the Republicans believe disaster relief is the job of the states....lolol

Also, I think it might be worth pointing out that the Republicans didn't WIN the past election for the White House; the Democrats fuc*ed up so badly, they LOST it...there IS a difference.

The FEMA director under Clinton during his last term was considered EXCELLENT.  Perhaps we could take this out of the political realm and back into the "most effective cabinet with experience" point-of-view.

Thanks for thinking our board has any intelligent members.  Signed: Just another FEMINAZI registered independent voter

Yup, the woman haters club dudes are always right, Sparky.  Good thing your opinions about me - like your opinions about music - don't really bludgeon me into thinking or becoming like you guys...but thanks for belittling my opinions anyway.

belittling your opinions?  what part of what you said could in any way be considered "independent"?

look, i'll call a spade a spade, and i hope y'all know that.  the person who started this thread asked for an intelligent discourse on minority voting.  i answered him, and included an aside to o'mankie about the breakdown of govt. in our federal system.  you responded to absolutely nothing i said, instead, relying on your own set of talking points about george w. bush (of whom, i did not mention).

Of course, yours was the only intelligent discourse.

Where in the forum rules am I required to rebutt/agree to YOUR posts?

My views have as much right to be posted here as yours.  If you take exception to my posting, maybe discussing the substance of them would be more mature than attacking me with Hoya-esq personal insults and blow job references...

BTW:  In case you haven't noticed, I am not alone in my views of "the" President - and some of his cabinet member's -  inept management skills...but believe what the fu*k you want.

ok, maybe not the right thread.  But the GOP spends a lot of time talking about voter fraud...but we all know the fruad is how they supresss the vote, purge legit voters and reject legit votes on arcane rules people don't actually know about

but was listening to Greg Palast on Jello's new podcast and I'm looking forward to watching this film
