This was my favorite show in DC (also my only show in DC, but still great).
Overall, I'd have to go with Nouvelle Vague at the Fillmore or the jam session I had in my basement with Johnny Marr and Isaac Brock warming up for their tour.

i started putting together a list but i've seen so many shows this year i'm afraid i've forgotten some (my memory is swiss cheese). i need to consult my ticket stub collection at home. plus, waiting until tomorrow allows me to consider thievery for the list, since i'm seeing them tonight. last year's TC@930 show was definitely in my top-3 for 2005.
early stand-outs, in order:
radiohead at tower theater
foo fighters at DAR
gogol bordello (last night) at 930
massive attack at 930

Best in no particular order (except for the first one):
1. Girls Against Boys - Touch and Go Fest (I turned thirty that weekend and I have been listening to them for fifteen years!)
2. Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - 9:30
3. Pretty Girls Make Graves w/Tangiers - Black Cat
4. Wolf Parade - Black Cat
5. Wolfmother - Black Cat
6. Riverboat Gamblers - Rollins Band - 9:30
7. Rancid - all three night at the Black Cat - nice guys, good and varied sets from them. H20 and Theo and The Skyscrapers were also good as openers
8. Detroit Cobras and The Ambitions - Black Cat
Luckily I got to do posters for a bunch of these shows and through that I got out of the house more and seeing some bands I would not have normally seen. Unfortunately, I missed the Gogol Bordello show last night due to a furnance and work issue even though I had free tickets. You can check it out the poster at El Jefe Design (http://www.eljefedesign.com).

Arctic Monkeys @ 9:30
Wolf Parade @ Black Cat
Golden Smog @ 9:30
-
1) Belle and Sebastian/New Pornos- 9:30
By far. And I went to a good number of shows this year.
-
I didn't see as much this year as I had hoped, or as in previous years. But out of what I did see, these took the cake...
Sonic Youth/BYOP @ 9:30 - you should walk out of every show that sweaty.
Regina Spektor @ 9:30
Voxtrot @ Georgetown U - small, packed room...lots of dancing...they played everything...
Nickel Creek @ 9:30 - a mandolin solo infused 2+ hour set
OK Go @ Webster Hall - because a private show with one of your favorite bands and only 400 other people really doesn't get much better than that.
And as far as local acts, I was interminably impressed with...
Army of Me
Greenland
Soft Complex
Georgie James
Washington Social Club
Paul Michel
Hotspur
The Evens
Monopoli
The Hard Tomorrows
etc etc etc
-
X/Rollins Band in Cleveland
Bob Dylan at Patriot Center
Les Claypool and Ween at All Good Festival in WV
Moistboyz in Baltimore
NIN/Bauhaus in Toronto
Disappointments:
Reverend Horton Heat at 9:30 - Wish he would change the set list a bit more. Its been pretty similar for 15 years.
Sonic Youth at 9:30 - I know alot of people liked this, but I was just unhappy that they didn't dip into the back catalog a little more. I think there were three songs played that weren't on the new record.
-
easily the best - secret machines at 9:30
other highlights: jenny lewis at 9:30, jose gonzalez at black cat, the walkmen at 9:30, m ward at the birchmere, josh ritter's in-store at olsson's, dr dog (opening for clap your hands at 9:30 and opening for the spinto band at the black cat), the raconteurs, wolfmother, the scissor sisters, the who, the flaming lips all at virgin festival
dissapointment - ben folds with BSO at merriweather
-
My favorite was the 2 nights of Massive attack at the club
Other highlights:
TV on the Radio @ sonar was fun
Deftones @ 930 (March and December) and Nissan (September)
Thievery Corporation @ Virgin Festival (i'm sure the
thursday show @ 930 will be awesome too)
Gnarles Barkley @ Virgin Festival
Prefuse 73 and Edan @ 930
The Roots @ Rams Head Live
Poison the Well/Fall of troy/horse the band@ the ottobar

7/21/06 Secret Machines (9:30)
8/3/06 Sleater Kinney, French Toast (9:30)
11/28/06 My Morning Jacket (9:30)
Honorable Mention

3/15/06 The National (Black Cat)
3/29/06 Stellastarr*, Editors (9:30)

6/3/06 The Stills, Rogue Wave (9:30)
11/5/06 Black Keys, Black Angels (9:30)
11/23/06 Brazilian Girls, Chistine Moritz (9:30)
High marks also go to the Virgin Fest and to the Osheaga Fest in Montreal. I'm not usually one for the bigger gigs but both had really good acts and were well organized.
-
I didn't get to a ton of shows this year with the move across the country,etc. Now that I have a real job, one of my resolutions for 2007 will be to get out to more shows.
Here's my top 5:
1. Jeff Klein/Afterhours/Twilight Singers, June 15, Doug Fir in Portland, OR
2. Pete Yorn, July 29, Doug Fir in Portland, OR
3. Jesse Malin/Ryan Adams with a special appearance by Phil Lesh, April 24, Roseland in Portland, OR
4. Annie Stela/Joseph Arthur, October 13, Doug Fir in Portland, OR
5. Ghosty, November 20, Rotture in Portland, OR
Honorable mentions would go to the other Twilight Singers and Pete Yorn shows I've also seen this year. :D /fangirl

I like this band a lot, have seen them numerous times before. I just didn't click with this show, plus as you mentioned, it was way too short.
It's funny how different people perceive the same show. I thought the Arctic Monkey show was really good -- sound, performance, songs -- but it seems like most people didn't care for it.

I drove down to The Norva to see the Arctic Monkeys, everything was basically perfect. But i lsitned to the 930 show on NPR and they were WAY more into it than they were at The Norva, the only thing that really stuck out was that Alex opened the show by coming out on stage alone and starting with "Riot Van", ouside of that the 930 show was way better.

best show i saw at 9:30 was most definitely either belle & Sebastian or lifetime.
-
i'm implying that stereolab blew. i'm a big fan of theirs, have been since the mid-90's, so i was psyched for their show. i left entirely disappointed. sound was awful, stage presence lacking. i tuned out halfway through their first set, i don't think i stayed until the end of it.
i thought that zero 7 put on a decent show. only thing that bugged me was that sia chick... talk about annoying. she was egotistical and didn't fit in with the rest of the group nor their sound, she would be better off fronting an all-girl punk band. but otherwise was a solid night at the 930, i'd go see them again.

2006 was an odd year for me...this Fall/Winter I missed easily a dozen shows I wanted to see, six of which I already had tickets for... I've been too busy and a wee uninspired. I saw 39 shows this year (I've been at about 50 shows the last few years). Although, having hit SxSW and catching 26 bands there makes for a pretty full year.
My best:
* The Hold Steady, Black Cat, Feb 1
* The Pogues, 9:30, Fri, 3/10
* The National, BC, Wed, 3/15
* SXSW, Austin, 3/16 - 3/20z; Deathray Davies, She Wants Revenge, Robert Pollard (w/ Tommy Keene)
* Editors, Stellastarr, 9:30 3/29
* Art Brut, The Rogers Sisters, BC 4/9
* Robert Pollard, Bowery Ballroom 4/20
* They Might Be Giants, 9:30 4/26
* Elefant, Black Cat, 5/19
* Sleater Kinney, 9:30 8/1
* Foo Fighters, Borgata A.C. 8/18
* Little Steven's Underground Garage Festival: Fleshtones, Mooney Suzuki, Black Cat, 9/24
* The Wrens, BC 10/28
* Ok Go, Irving Plaza 11/18

Surprised this one hasn't come up..

The Raconteurs at the Norva in Norfolk. Best show of the year.
Belle & Sebastian @ 930 and Jenny with the Watson Twins also awed me.

no one has mentioned beck at the black cat backroom. that was an incredible show.
the pet shop boys show at DAR would probably sneak in at the bottom of my top-10 list, great stage show - although i'm not sure if we're considering musicals here :)

No one has mentioned RJD2's show at 9:30 on 2/4, that was probably in my top five for the year.
