I also would like to know this.

I don't think the show's been confirmed yet, though. Matador jumped the gun.

What is the rumor? I'm assuming a SM & TJ show at the 9:30? When is the rumored date?

at Pitchfork this past summer he was mostly solo and quite engaging.

He did bring out bob s. to drum for a little bit and the crowd went nutty thinking there might be some pavementy stuff, but no.

i think that was one of the highlights of pitchfork for me.

While we're all gathered here, I'd figure I'd ask this:  Is his first name pronounced like "Steven" or is it "SteFFen?"  I've heard both used.

I've only heard that live show from last year (1/20/07), but yeah, the new songs kick butt.

I think "Steven," because I've heard him go by the nick "Steve." (on bootlegs and such...I don't know the man, or his moustache, personally...)

Malkmus/Matador Add Extras to Trash Pre-Order

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks' forthcoming Real Emotional Trash will mark their very own entry in Matador's "Buy Early Get Now" pre-order program, which has previously deluxe-ified albums by the New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo, the Ponys, and some band called Pavement.

The Real Emotional Trash Buy Early Get Now will feature the following extras:

 1) A stream of the album in its entirety, available immediately.

 2) Two One exclusive Trash B-sides, "Walk Into the Mirror" and "Pennywhistle Thunder", available immediately. UPDATE: Only "Walk Into the Mirror" is available now.

 3) A recording of the band's full set at Portland's Doug Fir Lounge on December 21, 2007.

 4) Every other Trash B-side and exclusive track, available from the BEGN site 90 days after physical release.

 5) A Trash poster and the album, picked up from your local store or shipped together on the album's release date, March 4.

Of course, to take advantage of the offer, you have to purchase the album before March 4 by visiting buyearlygetnow.com and following the site's instructions.

Malkmus and his Jicks aren't all about the instant gratification though. The band's U.S. tour with John Vanderslice is still two months away.

03-20 Milwaukee, WI - Pabst Theater

i don't think it'll sell out like wilco. remember when he played at the black cat a few years ago? it was on sale for a while and though it sold out eventually, it was only after some other show that was happening that night sold out. m.i.a. or something... no! the futureheads.

Pitchfork posted it again today and the date is up on Malkmus' site, so I assume it is actually happening.  I assume tickets will go on sale this week or next at the latest...

This maybe should be another topic but I'm a firm believer in Malkmus's theory of "better drummers."

Basically, that four-on-the-floor, technically precise, "in the pocket" drummers are bullshit and a lot of bands got worse the better the drummer learned how to play (R.E.M., Husker Du, etc.)

Then I read something in Rolling Stone or something about how now that Janet Weiss is in the band they're going to be great and how Malkmus has never played with a great drummer before and Janet Weiss is the "Keith Moon" of drummers right now.  I guess they didn't see the irony.

Do the writers at Rolling Stone have sex with members of the opposite sex?  Are they allowed?

 Brian

P.S.  Did the members of Sleater Kinney have sex with members of the opposite sex?  Were they allowed?

I'm not sure I see the irony, but I think saying you read something "in Rolling Stone or something" is bullshit.  You know where you read it, so why be cagey about it?

Well I'd rate those four:

 1. SBS
 2. BT
 3. AM
 4. AGIB

Certainly though there are a gaggle of people who prefer latter day Wilco to the first two albums.

She was married to Sam from Quasi/Heatmiser, but I don't think he was in the Go Betweens. Unless she's got her own Sam's Club going, and it's another Sam.

bobby n and mark ibold were at the last malkmus show at the black cat, whenever that was.

and i posted the below in just announced a while ago, but figured it might be seen by more appropriate eyes in this thread:

An Evening with David Berman (@ the corcoran)

 Thursday, February 28, 2008    7:00 PM

David Berman is the subject of Sodium Fox, one of the two complete portraits featured in the Corcoranââ?¬â?¢s exhibition Wild Choir: Cinematic Portraits by Jeremy Blake. An American songwriter, and the man behind the beloved rock band, Silver Jews, David Berman has until recently avoided the spotlight (waiting 15 years and five albums before taking the Silver Jews on tour in 2006), and yet his tragicomic bearing and influential works continue to capture critical acclaim and attention all around the world. The Corcoran is honored to have Mr. Berman on our stage for a rare and intimate evening as he honors the memory of Jeremy Blake.

You know, everyone treats him like "the closest I'll ever get to see Pavement" like people treat Morrissey as "the closest I'll ever get to see The Smiths."

Stephen Malkmus solo records are very good and he's done some stuff he couldn't do with Pavement but they're not Pavement.  Just like Morrissey has released some great, unique records.

Pavement were a great, one-of-a-kind mixture of talent.  We have a lot of material with the upcoming two "Terror Twilight" and "Brighten The Corners" reissues.  Focus and appreciate that.  You can't relive your youth.  People only have a hard on for Pavement because they broke up.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  There are a lot of bands that are still together from the Pavement era that no one cares about because they never broke up.

Don't believe the myth.  Don't believe the hype.  Appreciate the bands you have, now.  Not the mythical bands you wish in your head.
