Title: The 2009 Albums Thread
Post by: azaghal1981 on October 06, 2008, 04:42:00 pm
This announcement had me too excited to wait for someone to start this thread some time in the next couple months.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (http://www.myanimalhome.net/)

 Love the title!  :D

I saw that earlier.  Very weird...but I'm pretty psyched.

And while it's not 2009, I just saw this too:

Ween Live at the Cat??s Cradle 1992 w/bonus DVD
Chocodog Records will be releasing a live Ween CD from our old days as a duo. Live at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC 12/9/92. It will come with a bonus DVD which features clips from our first tour of Holland, and also Stache's in Columbus, OH. The whole thing is so brown that it's almost black. Pre-orders will start here on 10/11 and also at myspace.com/ween.

Awesome!

I've been saying since Claude left that they should take the duo out on the road again.

the strange thing that is ween.  i remember the days of yore when driving giddy like teens and my friend putting in pure guava for me to hear for the first time.  could i express to my dear lord above that this was music to be enjoyed beyond anything mighty heard before thus?  no said i, and clichely have everything they have ever released (i believe) to this day.  now ween is dusty and worn, and rarely sees the light of my time; too busy with the new and mighty future of others.  and the return of phish cometh.

but the point of this all was when i read the post from nkotb, i was moved once again by the place and the date of the show.  ween in their primest, and now i'm about as horny for it as i still am for hot chip!

I thought they were playing MPP in January for a second. It'd be freaking freezing and embarrassingly undersold.

Maybe IMP finally decided to do with Merriweather what is done with that Camden venue every winter and hold indoor shows and this is one of them? Still would be entirely too big for AC.

I'd much rather it be an album (with two nights at the club soon after!), anyway because just about everything this band puts out is pure gold.

Granted...but it still had some choice moments.  Hopefully, though, I never heard Blue Balloon or Object again.

Still, bring on the '09 releases...sorry to hijack the thread.

I like it....its a fun record to put on at a party...

But hey I'm biased.. I love these guys...

My favorite music critic  Erlewine  sees it the same way:

In the initial round of promotion for 2007's La Cucaracha, Ween's first album for Rounder and first in four years, Dean Ween called it a "party record, unlike our last record (Quebec) which was more of a Jonestown type party vibe," which is about as accurate a self-criticism as an artist has ever given. Quebec left a hazy, narcotic aftertaste that the giddy La Cucaracha blows away as the band reverts back to all their signatures: they never stay in one place too long, they spike most songs with their impish humor, and every track shows their knack for savvy, sly, odd arrangements. In that sense, the record could almost be seen as a back-to-basics album, as it's pitched somewhere between the sonics of Pure Guava and the sensibility of Chocolate and Cheese, but that's misleading, as it suggests that Ween are self-consciously striving to recapture past glories. Nothing could be further from the truth. La Cucaracha is the sound of Ween cutting loose, reveling in the lower budget and expectations an indie label brings, and playing music that simply sounds good. And, make no mistake, this is a party record -- quite literally so, as it's bookended with the spangly, mariachi rock & roll instrumental "Fiesta" and the decadently suave "Your Party," two songs that explicitly celebrate parties. The latter features a divine cameo from David Sanborn, whose alto saxophone gives this lounge party precisely the right sense of velvet flair, and whose very presence signals just how far Ween have come as musicians since the heyday of The Pod and Pure Guava. Back then, they were wildly imaginative young punks, creating their own world on a four-track, but they continued to expand their horizons with each successive album for Elektra in the '90s, growing as writers and musicians with each LP.

With La Cucaracha, they return full circle, recording the album in a rented farmhouse in their hometown of New Hope, PA, and they seem re-energized by the smaller scale yet they don't abandon the frightening musical acumen they've garnered in the past 15 years. As such, the album is almost the best of both worlds: it has the devilish, off-kilter vibe of the earliest records but it's played with the skill of their latter-day albums, so this bounces from the elastic pop of "Blue Balloon" to the full-throated roar of "My Own Bare Hands," as punishing a rocker as they've ever cut. And while they never abandon genre-hopping -- "The Fruit Man" is this album's excursion into reggae, "Spirit Walker" and the ten-minute "Woman and Man" their prog rock numbers -- nothing feels like a deliberate parody. All the different musical strands feel fully absorbed, to the extent that when Gene Ween dips into Roger Miller nonsense on the chorus of the deliriously fun "Learnin' to Love," it doesn't seem like a send-up, it just feels like a natural move, an indication of how ferociously talented this duo is. At this point, 17 years after their debut, Ween may not surprise as often as they once did, but they've long ago transitioned away from relying on shock humor and have become one of the most consistently satisfying rock bands in America, and La Cucaracha captures them at a peak, which is surely reason enough to throw a party. After all, Ween have given you an ideal soundtrack for one with this album.

Comets on Fire was posted in exclamatory hopefulness. They were on hiatus, but they've been playing together again. Therefore I hope and pray a new album comes out and that it trends more toward Blue Cathedral than Avater.

The last Essex Green album just might be the most underrated album of '06.

Could've sworn someone told me that Ben Chasny and the other two Comets guys weren't exactly getting along. Good to hear that's in the past. Chasny's one of the last people I thought would have a beef with anyone; definitely one of the nicest and most easy-going musicians I've met.

P.S. Howlin' Rain is a gigantic piece of shit and needs to go away forever.

I know I've seen No More Runnin up there before but couldn't find it. Not sure of what the others are. There's an obvious West African feel to a lot of them; like Paul Simon's Graceland meets a sizable puddle of LSD.  :)

Radiohead to return to studio after tour (http://www.ateaseweb.com/2008/09/11/radiohead-return-to-studio-after-tour/)
 Posted on September 11th, 2008.

In a year where Radiohead spent most of the time touring, news about an upcoming Radiohead album would be too good to be true. Then again, here??s some good news. Radiohead are determined to work on album #8 after the tour.

Radiohead have announced exclusively to 6 Music that they??re in the process of writing a new album. After losing to Elbow for the Mercury Music Prize on Tuesday night (9 September) they told 6 Music they??d taken time out of playing live to put new tracks down and would be heading to the studio in the near future.

Colin Greenwood said they??d be heading back into the studio when they??d completed their current world tour: ??We??ve finished the main bulk of it and we??re off to Japan in a couple of weeks to finish it off.?

And fully enthused about writing new stuff, Ed O??Brien chimed in: ??We??re still talking about doing some stuff and we??re really excited about it. First we came off tour to do some writing and we wanted to just carry on doing it because it was so brilliant.?

Post by: azaghal1981 on October 24, 2008, 07:11:00 pm
The AC blog reviews are starting to trickle in:

"As the internet has revealed, I had the honor and distinct privilege to hear the latest Animal Collective album, Merriweather Post Pavilion.

You annoy-nymous posters out there will perhaps notice that I didn't say I had the album, only that I heard to it, right? Even if I did have it, the only way I have attained such a privilege is by not pretending it's my intellectual property to give away to strangers. So please stop asking.

But here's what I scratched out on that initial listen:

 * a text message sent to my friend during the opening moments: "Boomy, shimmering, trippy."

 * the dynamic frequencies heard to jarring and enervating effect on Strawberry Jam are now warm and immersive

*MPP is in the direction hinted at by the Pantha du Prince remix of "Peacebone," Water Curses's "Street Flash," Person Pitch, but come to fruition.

*Whereas PP had a homemade, lo-fi 4-track feel, this is given the proper full-range boom-tick

*it's going to sound sick booming out of a jeep

*flowing, ever-changing, there's a liquidity to the entire album, lots of water samples (no wonder it's being debuted at "The River Room")

*if I didn't know better, I would think the band just discovered Ecstasy, there's that telltale 'flash' to it

*have they been hanging out in Berlin techno clubs on tour?

*"Am I really all the things that are outside of me?"

 * it's a continuum of the band's previous obsessions: Beach Boys, Terry Riley, Missa Luba, Kaito, Sagittarius, GAS, but in its most resplendent and assured manifestation to date

*to be filed alongside Screamadelica, Loveless"

 ""Animal Collective: "Merriweather Post Pavilion"

 2008-10-22 10:56:50
Judging my the arrival on yesterday??s blog of a bunch of fans asking me to leak ??Merriweather Post Pavilion?, there??s a fair bit of anticipation for this new Animal Collective album that I got hold of on Monday. Unfortunately, folks, I??m not going to leak this, or any other album, because: a) I like to play nice; b) I??d get sacked if I did leak it (the CD is watermarked with my name, so it??d be traceable if I uploaded it); and c) I??m much too technically incompetent to do that, in any case. Hope that??s clear.

What I can do is be a tease and tell you how great this, maybe the ninth, Animal Collective album is. It??s interesting to see all the excitement surrounding ??Merriweather Post Pavilion?, since there seemed to be something of a small backlash against the band following last year??s ??Strawberry Jam?; too pop and accessible, seemed to be a consensus, though to me it seemed to be a logical step on from ??Feels? (if not quite as good).

Already, the buzz around this one is that it??s more in the vein of Panda Bear??s solo ??Person Pitch? album from 2006 ?? closer in spirit to dance music, I suppose. That turns out to be partially true: there??s definitely a hint of minimalist techno ?? the Kompakt label especially, maybe ?? pulsing through the background of some of these songs. The fantastic ??Summertime Clothes? even starts with something similar to one of those electronic Glitter Band beats that became hip as Schaffel a few years ago. There are some ferocious, quaking jeep bass frequencies throughout, too, that nail down the flighty top end of the AC sound with the muscle of hip hop.

And there??s an extraordinary passage in the closing ??Brothersport? that??s as close to pure techno as the band have ever come, faintly resembling a maximalist take on Underground Resistance (or so it seemed on the bus this morning. Bear with me, these are early thoughts).

But unlike ??Person Pitch?, these 11 songs are generally too complex and tricksy to rest merely on reverberant loops. It??s traditional to compare Animal Collective to The Beach Boys, thanks to those gaseous harmonies constructed by Avey Tare and Panda Bear. On ??Merriweather?, they??ve become more and more elaborate, with intricate melodies layered on top of another to create an ecstatic whole. If there??s a Beach Boys analogue to the gorgeous love song, ??Bluish?, for instance, it??d be one of those compacted symphonies from ??Pet Sounds? like ??Waiting For The Day?.

It??s easy to throw those Beach Boys comparisons at anything with multiplied falsettos, but here, more than ever, it seems justified. There??s a sense of adventure and wonder at the heart of Animal Collective??s music. I??ve written before about how I see them as sort of successors to Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips; as makers of a folksy American pop music with a transformative spirit and an experimental imperative.

Listening to ??Merriweather? for maybe the fourth or fifth time right now, I can??t help thinking of Mercury Rev??s latest disappointment, ??Snowflake Midnight?, and how they tried to overhaul their sound with electronica; referencing the avant-garde and ending up sounding like a twee Chemical Brothers, of all things. No such problem for Animal Collective. They??ve managed to expand their trademark sound to include triumphal organ flurries, psychedelic arpeggios on ??My Girls? and ??Daily Routine? that, underneath the beguiling tunes, recall Terry Riley circa ??A Rainbow In Curved Air?.

And going back to that idea of an AC ??trademark sound?, it strikes me that while ??Merriweather? is instantly recognisable as their work, it also has an elevated gracefulness. Amniotic sloshing still underpins many of these tracks, but the kindergarten shrillness of old seems to have been phased out, so that the general mood is one of blissed euphoria, if that makes sense. An ecstatic sound, in more than one way.

Something about the opening ??In The Flowers?, the way it keeps peaking and has the clattering feel of a drum parade at times, reminded me of ??Turn Into Something? this morning, so I played the two songs back to back. The contrast was pretty surprising, actually: the older song, in comparison, felt raw, rowdy, relatively simplistic. That??s not to say ??In The Flowers? is over-polished and sober ?? far from it. One of the many pleasures of ??Merriweather Post Pavilion? is the sustained excitement, even in the more reflective passages like "No More Runnin", before the fireworks-packed climax of ??Brothersport?.

Not really.

Good point. And given how psychedelic their last album was, I guess this isn't too much of a stretch.

And in other 2009 hip-hop album news:

Lupe Fiasco's last will apparently stretch across three discs (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/147222-lupe-fiasco-announces-three-disc-final-album)

The Empyrean is my new record and will be released worldwide via Record Collection on January 20th 2009. It was recorded on and off between December 2006 and March 2008. It is a concept record that tells a single story both musically and lyrically. The story takes place within one person, and there are two characters. It contains a version of Tim Buckley's, 'Song To The Siren' and the rest of the songs are written by me. My friend Josh plays on it, as does Flea. It also features Sonus Quartet, Johnny Marr and The New Dimension Singers. I'm really happy with it and I've listened to it a lot for the psychedelic experience it provides. It should be played as loud as possible and it is suited to dark living rooms late at night.

At the beginning of this year Dr Pepper released a statement that if Guns n Roses released its new album during the 2008 calendar year, they would give every American a free can of Dr Pepper.  They've already released the information about how to claim your coupon for a free Dr Pepper on their website during the first 24-48 hours of the release of Chinese Democracy, if in fact it is released this year.

I'm looking forward to a few things...

 1. Depeche Mode - I'm seriously looking forward to this one. Playing the Angel was fantastic, which makes me wonder if they're picking up steam again. The album is coming out this spring followed by a world tour. (Hey Seth!!! Book this at Merriweather please!)

 2. She Wants Revenge - Supposedly they are going to have some new material dropping in 2009, which is great. I enjoy my "mediocre" goth indie rock stuff. (I put "mediocre" like that because while I don't think they're bad, loads of people do.)

 3. AFI - While I miss the old days and their last album was pretty disappointing, I still want to hear what new shit they have to offer.

 4. Massive Attack - So this one was suppose to be out this year, but it's not. I really hope it's coming out soon.

 5. Ryan Adams - Oh you know he'll release something in 2009.

 6. Amy Winehouse - She's working on new material. Rumor is Fall of 2009 and that what she's got so far is supposedly good.

 7. Lily Allen - I am curious to see how she does with this one. Will the Sophmore slup hit her or not, we'll just have to wait to find out.

 8. U2- They had to delay their new one until the spring or summer...uh something like that. Though the last album wasn't all that I had hoped for, I'm thinking they'll do something cool this time around. Either way, I'll probably get it because I own everything else by them and I'll probably see them live, because I've yet been able to do that.

I'd love to hear a few things that I'm starting to think will never see the light of day. New Circulatory System and My Bloody Valentine to be more specific.

Circulatory System have been playing a ton of new material live for the last 3-4 years; they need to fucking release it on disc already!

Nov 20, 2008 (WENN via COMTEX) -- NEIL YOUNG is set to pay back soul man BOOKER
 T. JONES for backing him on his ARE YOU PASSIONATE album - by signing up to play
guitar on the GREEN ONIONS hitmaker's first solo release in 20 years.

Jones and his Booker T & The MGs bandmates acted as Young's backing group on the
acclaimed 2002 album, and now the rocker is returning the favour.

He'll join The Drive-By Truckers, who will back Jones on his new
all-instrumental album, which will hit stores early in 2009.

I don't feel like digging for the 2008 albums thread so I'll post this here.

This just came out and I'm pretty much in love with it right now:
"Everything's coming to a end with the swansong from Iowa City's Raccoo-oo-oon. Following up last years critically acclaimed Behold Secret Kingdom (RTB/Not
Not Fun), the final album takes everything up a notch and shows a band taking their last breath and laying down the last bricks in their fairly short history.

The album blends together all different parts of Raccoo-oo-oons discography, taking cues from the utter freeform punk madness of The Cave Of Spirits Forever
(Time Lag), building something completely new of the era that was Behold Secret Kingdom and yet delivering echoes of the eclectic Mythos Folkways recordings.
The album reeks of desperation and a feeling of going down with nothing to loose at all. A fucked up future-prog mayhem that is all over the place and
at no known place at all at the same time.

Genuinely uncomfortable, desperate and just beautiful, this album will surely be remembered as the most important recording that Racco-oo-oon ever put
to tape. Minds are melting, new grounds are covered and things will never be the same.

A playtime of close to 75 minutes over 7 tracks.  Mastered by Pete Swanson.  Mini gatefoldsleeve with black felt.  2xLP version on Not Not Fun.  The band
members are now playing in acts such as Wet Hair, Trash Dog and Pukers."

So far, 2009 is shaping up to be so much better than 08.  I'm looking forward to the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  Heard the other night that QOTSA will be putting out a new one, and I'm crossing my fingers for a long-delayed-but-always-promised follow-up to 2003's Meadowlands by the Wrens.

Came across this last week:

Dent May - The Good Feeling Music Of Dent May And His Magnificent Ukulele (2009, Paw Tracks)

Sounds like what Jens Lekman would if he were to multi-track his voice to make it sound like he's in a barbershop quartet with three of himself. His lyrics are also similarly playful and endearing.

 Also around:
a Ben Kweller EP and a Napalm Death (didn't even know they were still around) album for anyone into those sorts of things.

Also hoping for:

-Broadcast's follow-up to Tender Buttons
-Juan Maclean's "The Future Will Come"
-Massive Attack's follow-up to 100th Window
-PJ Harvey and John Parish's follow-up to Dance Hall at Louse Point
-Kelis' new one. (She's been working with Diplo)
-Ditto on the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
-Hopefully some new Arcade Fire music will come in 2009. *crosses fingers*

This should be good:

"Sub-zero temperatures, snow quietly cascading onto barren branches, and Marissa Nadler playing on the stereo; some things were just made for each other. Hopefully snow will still be falling on some parts of the world come March 3, as that's when Ms. Nadler's due to drop her fourth full-length, Little Hells.

The follow-up to 2007 breakthrough Songs III: Bird on the Water and likely little bit o' heaven, Little Hells collects 10 new tracks and features production from Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, !!!) and contributions from Blonde Redhead's Simone Pace, Beachwood Sparks' "Farmer" Dave Scher, and Black Hole Infinity's Myles Baer. Kemado will have the pleasure of releasing it."

supposedly the new U2 has been delayed until '09, and music retailers are complaining.  they were hoping bono & co would ensure a happy holiday season for them.

U2 to release new album in March (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081218/music_nm/us_u2)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Irish rockers U2 have named their new album "No Line On The Horizon," and will release it worldwide in early March, their label said on Thursday.

The quartet's 12th studio album was originally expected to be released by the end of this year, but the band announced in September that it would keep writing more tunes. Recording took place in Morocco, Dublin, New York and London.

Interscope Records will release "No Line On The Horizon" internationally on March 2, and a day later in North America.

It marks the follow-up to "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," which was released in late 2004 and went on to sell 9 million copies worldwide, according to Interscope. It also garnered U2 their second album of the year Grammy, following 1987's "The Joshua Tree."

The new album was produced by long-time collaborators Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, with additional production by Steve Lillywhite. Tunes recorded in 2006 with producer Rick Rubin, the man behind Johnny Cash's comeback, have been jettisoned.

Tour plans have not been announced. The "Vertigo" world tour for the last album ran from March 2005 to December 2006. U2 is partnered on touring and merchandise with concert promoter Live Nation Inc, which said earlier on Thursday that it bought back the band's stock in the company for a guaranteed $25 million -- $19 million more than the market price. Interscope is a unit of Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group.

would you like to see music the way it was (controlled by col. tom parker clones) or the way it is (out of control loops of whether or not the band has the inner firm grip on their own futures - timed music leaks/free downloadables/tour incredible/cheap merch to promote the sound not the name/internet video channel galleries/impressive studio releases)?  i believe, like movie remakes, there are too many bands and they need to wittled down to diamond tips.

and back to 2009 albums - phish studio (better than that last one) . . . before hampton, but will settle for it after, as well.

I've found nowadays that if you have to get a mod's approval/permission to register, it doesn't happen unless you email them specifically and say "hi, can you pretty please approve my registration." After months of not hearing anything on my registration, I sent an email like that and was approved the same day.

Speaking of, a lot of spam showing up on this site. Wonder if we'll have to introduce mod approvals here.

For the stoner metal fans:
"It has been a long time coming and now it is finally a reality! Legendary guitarist: Scott 'Wino' Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Place
of Skulls, The Hidden Hand) has an albums worth of 'solo' recordings in the works. Assisting Wino will on the album will be Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch) on
drums and Jon Blank (Rez n) on bass. The album will be called: 'Punctuated Equilibrium' and tracks are currently being layed down with J. Robbins (producer
of the Hidden Hands: 'Mother Teacher Destroyer') in Maryland. Wino is really excited about the results so far and said: 'Punctuated Equilibrium' will bring
my career into focus'. Stay tuned for more info regarding this incredible album"

You weren't too crazy about Person Pitch either if I remember correctly.

Sounds more to me than anything like MPP is sort of an expansion on the ideas laid out on PP.

But here's something I'm sure you can get behind:

Shrinebuilder album due out in the summer.
"The band's absurd lineup: Saint Vitus/Obsessed/Spirit Caravan/Hidden Hand guitar hero Scott "Wino" Weinrich, gigantic Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot leader Scott Kelly (pictured), former* Sleep and current Om bassist Al Cisneros, and Melvins drummer Dale Crover. Former Om drummer Chris Hakius was also originally supposed to be involved, but he dropped out around the same time he left Om. And that's fine; we're not about to start complaining about Dale Crover being involved."

Just came across this on another board:

December 03, 2008 11:51 AM ET

Michael D. Ayers, N.Y.
A mixture of old-fashioned studio work and home recordings will comprise Black Dice's fifth album, "Repo," due in April via Paw Tracks.

The group expects "10 to 15 songs" to make the final cut, and is wrapping up its last recording session this week at Rare Book Room Studios in Brooklyn, N.Y.

"Most of the record is songs that we are tracking live and mixing in a traditional kind of recording process," Aaron Warren tells Billboard.com. "But some of the stuff is more experimental, more home recording stuff that we've gotten into. We've messed around with that a little, but haven't had the skills to do until now."

Compared to 2007's "Load Blown," Warren describes the new material as "compact" and utilizing less gear than last time. "One of the great things about 'Load Blown' is that it has a sprawling, really luxurious quality that unfolds over a lot of time," he explains.  "And I think [this time] everything is a little more compact, where it's a lot of ideas that are happening fast. Because we're recording in such a compacted time, I think there is a more unified sound."

You're right, I wasn't all that wild about Person Pitch. I do put that one on occasionally because I grew to appreciate its Brian Wilsonian ambience, but I just feel like the songs don't go anywhere. They just kind of amble along, end, and then another one starts. Very pleasant sounding, to be sure, but just not what I'm looking for in music right now.

Indicative: I just realized the Sword is playing the RnR Hotel next week. Now THAT is exciting. So you can see where I'm coming from here.

They are opening for Metallica. They also have a separate headlining gig the night before. I know this because I read the Onion, not because I would be caught near either show!

new Franz Ferdinand is out and about. I've listened to it twice and... I'll probably dig it more as I get more familiar with it, but it lacks that immediate punch that the debut had. I swear, I had their first album in the car for like six months, and never got tired of it. I even though the 2nd one was damn good, with a great lead-off single in Do You Wanna.

The new one dials back the guitars and adds more of the dance thumpa-thumpa. Several times I thought it just sounded like Hot Chip with sassier vocals, and that made me very sad. But I'm kind of wanting to hear it again, which is the mark of an album that I'll eventually get into. It's just a little disappointing to hear them moving closer to dance pop and away from the itchy guitar rock.

"Happy New Year! Drag City welcomes to the stable the dynamic duo known as Magik Markers! Their bone-splitting live shows have long been a favorite of ours, so finally we got off our bed-sores and cart-wheeled sweatily towards an arranged marriage of sorts with these freaky kids. Fortunately, they weren?t scared by our show of enthusiasm, just amused ? and as inspired as ever. Their incredible new record, Balf Quarry, is the answer to a lot of unasked questions out there, an answer that's going to unsettle a bunch of you. And naturally, the rest of you lot are gonna laugh like hyenas. But since it's all about the (fucked up) music, who cares? How to care? And what's up? Get into the new Magik Markers in May to wonder these questions with adequate justification."

Not a new album per se, but I'm noticing that the remastered version of Loveless is floating about the wires. Anyone heard it yet? Is it a marked improvement over the old one?

Have pretty much given up on the Animal Collective album as it's just not my bag. I need songs, tunes, hooks, and this has almost none. There are a few nice flourishes here and there, but it just seems like an exercise and a chore to listen to.

Interestingly, after verbally damning MPP and tearing it from the deck, I popped in Franz's new one and this one is getting better and better. Good punchy power pop with a sassy kick is just what I'm looking for right now.

Hmm...

"According to his manager, the as-yet-untitled debut album from the nimble Washington, DC rapper Wale will include beats from a whole lot of familiar names in the  rap-producer roundtable: Cool & Dre, Ryan Leslie, Green Lantern, Sean C and LV. Best Kept Secret, the go-go inflected DC producers whose beats animated much of Wale's celebrated Mixtape About Nothing, are also on board, as is Mark Ronson, who signed Wale to his Interscope imprint Allido, and West Coast experimental dance music team Glitch Mob.

But there's an unexpected name on that list, too: TV on the Radio sound-sculptor David Sitek. Sitek's done a ton of production work outside his own band, manning the boards for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Scarlett Johansson, and Foals, among others, but Wale is the first rapper he's worked with.

Wale and Sitek have completed two tracks together. Antibalas alums Stuart Bogie and Todd Simon play horns on the tracks, while Breakestra's Dave Chegwidden plays congos. Rock star poet Saul Williams may handle the hook on one, and TVOTR frontman Tunde Adebimpe may sing on the other. Tre, frontman for the go-go band UCB (also doing some work with Sitek, according to Weisman) helped with melodies and horn arrangements."

Also, the first few tracks of Marissa Nadler's new one are good.

The pitiful decline of a once-great band

Terrible bands make terrible records all the time, which is fine. No point wasting energy on whatever Nickelback's up to these days?those dudes can't help themselves, and are free to suck as much as they'd like. But it's been a long time since a band as good as Franz Ferdinand made a record as appalling as Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. Truly, the four dapper Scotsmen that constitute this group should be ashamed of their tuneless, thoughtless, meaningless new offering, which distorts the proud legacy of a band that once mattered.
What makes the album so bad? Is it the leering vocals? The uninspired melodies? The horrific production, which cranks the sound until it's literally painful to the ears? Yes, but that's not all. One mustn't forget the lyrics, which seem to lack both heart and brain. And how about the eight-minute "Lucid Dreams?" Before this album, it was inconceivable that a band this tight would release such a protracted wank. Now, anything's possible.

The album seems even worse compared with Franz's self-titled 2004 debut, an instant classic that kicked rock 'n' roll back onto the dance floor, where it belongs. The sophomore album that followed in 2005 was rougher, but it left hope that more good work was forthcoming. Maybe one day.

Franz took more than three years to make Franz?a laughably long time for such meager results. The layoff suggests that Franz is either too confused or too lazy to move forward. They're still not a bad band. They're just a pitiful caricature of the sly, swaggering gang they once were. We know they're capable of more. We know we could have it so much better.

The review was from Paste Magazine.

I know I probably made fun of FF early on, but I actually ended up liking their first two albums. Probably not as much as some people, but I could appreciate it for what it was. Not so the new one. Granted, I only listened to it once, but don't feel the desire to go back to it again.

from the SFA's listserv:

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM

Digital release 16th March on the band's own website - www.superfurry.com, physical release 13th April on Rough Trade Records, 21st April for U.S. release.

Super Furry Animals are currently hard at work on their 9th studio album in Cardiff..  Since 2007's 'Hey Venus' the band have been keeping busy with their various side projects including Daf and Guto's acclaimed work as part of The Peth with Rhys Ifans, Cian's forthcoming Acid Casuals release and Som Bom techno nights in London and of course Gruff's Mercury nominated work with Neon Neon.

Currently with a tracklisting but without a title the band promise; "Musically it's based around riffs and grooves we've been playing around with over the last few years. We have enough now for a whole album so even though it's still very melodic we thought we could
leave off the acoustic ballads for the time being."

"It's recognisable as a melodic SFA record, but is very focused musically as a cohesive album. And no country rock as Daf has developed a pedal steel phobia. Which has confined the great Nashvillian instrument along with the Saxophone to the banned instrument directive of the SFA board. there's only one slow number which isn't slow at all."

Longtime cohorts Pete Fowler  will combine with legendary Japanese artist Tanaami for the album artwork, which is sure to result in a feast for the eyes.

The album is due for digital release on the 16th March via the bands own website (www.superfurry.com), the physical following on the 13th of April on Rough Trade Records.

Super Furry Animals have some more tricks up their sleeve which we will be announcing a little closer to the release date - watch this space for more information!

1.'The very best of Neil Diamond'
  2. White socks/Flip Flops.

Speaking of which, I did not understand the Knife one bit when I first became aware of them (i.e. when P-Fork put them at the top of their year-end list a couple years ago). But now I think they're really great and I love that album.

Indie is the new mainstream...mind you these albums probably actually sold maybe 10 copies each.

Taylor Swift's eighth week atop the Billboard 200 almost seems like a given, but the debut of Andrew Bird's Noble Beast at number 12, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion at 13 and Bon Iver's Blood Bank EP at 16 make this week's charts interesting. [Variety.com]

Two tracks in and it's pretty good so far. First was a nice melodic synth-oriented piece while the 2nd is a minimal house piece built around a basic three-chord riff.

It has R&B, hip hop, rock n roll, and definetetly techno elements. The best track on the album is Heartbreaker with John Legend. Its phenomenal.

NEW YORK (Billboard) ? Former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, Hanson's Taylor Hanson and Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger have formed a new band, Tinted Windows.
The group has recorded its debut album at Stratosphere Sound Studios in New York, which Schlesinger and Iha co-own with Ivy's Andy Chase. A spring release is planned, on a label to be announced.

Pilot Speed (formerly just "Pilot"), from toronto, will be releasing an album in april.  they opened for the dears some time back (2006?) and i thought they were really great (infinitely better than The National, who were openers #2 - ugh).  i'm excited to hear that they'll be touring again.  not sure how good their recorded output is, but their live show is highly recommended.

New Album + Tracklist

Hey friends,

We've got some exciting news. The new record will be out April 2009 on iTunes, and in good old fashioned compact-disc format in the US and Canada, from the lovely people at Wind-Up Records and MapleMusic Recordings, respectively. It's called Wooden Bones.....which is also the title of a song some of you may of heard us play last time we hit the road. Most of it was completed here in Toronto and NYC with our new friend Kevin Killen steering the ship

Here's the tracklisting:
1 Put The Phone Down
2 Light You Up
3 Bluff
4 Ain't No Life
5 Up On The Bridge
6 Where Does It Begin?
7 What Is Real, What Is Doubt
8 Today I Feel Sure
9 Midnight Fires
10 Wooden Bones
11 Open Arms

The first single is Put The Phone Down, which should be hitting the airwaves this week, with a video to accompany it towards the end of March. We're also planning to start streaming different new tracks for your listening pleasure in the coming weeks on the ol' interweb. Keep checking our MySpace page for a preview of the new record starting with "Put The Phone Down"

Live dates are starting to come together, we'll have some more info on this real soon.

You know, it's been a somewhat long process for us.... it's hard to believe our last record was in '06. Even Axl Rose managed to get his record out between then and now. But on the upside we're really excited about this new music and what it means as a step forward for this band... and we really look forward to letting you hear it. As always, thanks for your patience and support. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Love,
Pilot Speed

Spent much of the weekend digging the new Mastodon. It's much more mellow, and all the Remission dorks are going to get their panties in a-twitter, but it's a very good album. Am especially looking forward to getting the actual release because the leak's SQ is pretty bad and it sounds like the guitars are monstrous on this thing.

Just grabbed the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album and will listen to it when I go running at lunch.

New LSD March album is really good so far. Floyd-esque Japanese psych.

Mellow and accessible as far as Japanese psych goes, too.

Vinyl fetishism has no bounds it seems. Someone should tell the Pitchfork folk that in 1985 it was still very common for releases to be vinyl-only.

Yes!!

Sun Gangs by The Veils

Released: Apr 07 2009

1. Sit Down By The Fire
2. Sun Gangs
3. The Letter
4. Killed By The Boom
5. It Hits Deep
6. Three Sisters
7. The House She Lived In
8. Scarecrow
9. Larkspur
10. Begin Again

The Veils are Finn Andrews, (vocals, guitar, piano, New Zealand) Sophia Burn, (bass, New Zealand) Dan Raishbrook (guitar, odd noise, England) and Henning Dietz (drums, Germany). Sun Gangs is their third album, and without a doubt their finest to date.

By turns epic, desolate, wildly romantic and anguished, Sun Gangs is a bold and distinctive record described by Finn as ?a very modern mixture of prayers, love letters and personal record keeping?. Produced by Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker / British Sea Power / Bark Psychosis) it is their most ambitious record yet ranging from the yearning elegy of ?Sit Down By The Fire?, to the charred, mantis-like groove of ?Killed By The Boom? - this is a record unlike many we are likely to hear this year.

So many stories, words, tones and ideas punctuate its gradually unfolding landscape as that incomparable voice cries and hollers. ??Sit Down By The Fire? is about watching something collapse, and it being quite pretty to look at,? offers Finn. ??Killed By The Boom? is possibly about The Wire?s Omar Little. ?It Hits Deep? is about being a man, in a bar alone, on a tropical island resort, as the light gets dim and the world goes fuzzy. ?Larkspur? is somewhere else entirely.?

?I really wanted to write something that hangs together in perhaps a not so obvious way; not just some collection of singles but a real voyage into something, something strange and unspecific but totally emotionally consuming. It?s also kinda just a break-up record in many ways.?

Finn?s father Barry Andrews was a founding member of the highly influential group XTC in the late 1970s, later going on to tour with the likes of Robert Fripp & Brian Eno, Iggy Pop & David Bowie.

In younger days in Auckland, thousands of miles away from his father, Finn sang at a folk club up a volcano, and sidelined a desire to paint when he began hearing musicians like Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen, Roy Orbison & Bob Dylan - contemplating that there was perhaps more to life than the bleeping Eighties electronica and early days of New Wave which had surrounded his first London foray.

In Sun Gangs The Veils have brought Finn?s early influences full circle, and created a record that truly lives up to the huge promise and talent that they have always exhibited.

now i want to give this album a listen... marketing win:

Chris Cornell's dance album dismays rock fans

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Chris Cornell is getting a kick out of angering his fans.

The former Soundgarden singer has stunned the rock cognoscenti with his whimsical decision to record an album with Timbaland, a hip-hop producer whose clients include pop stars Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado.

"Scream" is both the title of his third solo outing and a reflection of the howls of indignation. Online forums ignited with bitter denunciations (and occasional defenses) of the album long before it hit stores on Tuesday via Interscope Records.

(...)

At any rate, Cornell has performed the album in its entirety at about a dozen concerts, and says the audience response has been enthusiastic.

"It's the most that I've seen guys with beards rocking back and forth to a rhythm," he said.

He considers the album "an interesting sociological experiment," since people seem to be more concerned about who is making the music rather than the music itself.

At first I was really disappointed with the new Bonnie Prince Billy album. It was so polished and shiny, with clean instrumentation and smooth background vocals, whereas I like my Oldham creaky and ramshackle. But the fact is, motherscratcher can write songs and the quality still comes shining through. Doesn't reach the highs of Lie Down in the Light, and isn't nearly on the level of I See a Darkness or Viva Lost Blues. But it's another win for the bald fat man.

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs does nothing for me. They ratcheted down Zimmer's guitars and increased O's vocals, and now it just sounds kind of generic.

Mantic Ritual's Executioner is a new band that someone described as sounding like Kill 'Em All-era Metallica, and... that's exactly right. Not ground-breaking but hits the spot.

from the Old 97's website:

And this just in from Billboard: Rhett's self-titled fourth CD now has a release date: Rhett Miller hits the shelves of finer sound emporiums on June 9. Another great tidbit from that piece:
Miller plans to tour in support of "Rhett Miller," both on his own and with Old 97's. In fact, he says, the band, which will be on the road this summer, is thinking about incorporating solo sets by Miller and bassist Murry Hammond as part of an "evening with" concept.

and in other news:

Ashes of American Flags, Wilco's first live concert film on DVD is now available for pre-order HERE (http://wilco.shop.musictoday.com/Dept.aspx?cp=188_16287&page=1). Filmed during the band's March '08 tour, it includes footage from Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Tipitina's in New Orleans, The Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and the 9:30 Club in Washington DC. Our friends Brendan Canty and Christoph Green at Trixie Films directed & produced (Sunken Treasure, Burn to Shine, etc.) and we think it's a pretty damned good piece of work. Since April 18 is a ways off yet, we'll give you at least a bit of immediate gratification upon ordering with an instantaneously available downloadable version of Monday (playable on your computers, ipods, etc.). I was the biggest SFA fan during the Fuzzy Logic and Radiator era, but Guerilla was the fade point and I've not been into much since. And I don't like the new one a lot. It's good enough music and I could see people liking it. But I like those first two albums so much with their greasy guitars and punchy songs, and everything since has seemed like mushy baroque pop.

I realized last night that the Pains of Being Pure at Heart is probably my favorite record of the year so far. It'll fade sooner or later, but for now, it's a nice little album.

Another disappointment is the new Art Brut. I still think their debut is one of the decade's classics. Every song on there is a winner. But I never really got into the second one, even though it sounded pretty similar. I'll try again on Art Brut vs. Satan, but it sounds like they're just filling out a template on what they're supposed to sound like. I've played it twice and both times I've stopped in the middle and put the debut on and been happier. Result!

the new Caspa is good and heavy-hitting so far; too bad I don't have the proper stereo system for it. Much of the super low sub-bass is lost on me.

New Superdrag takes a few spins but there are about 6 or 7 really strong tracks that get better with each listen. A lot more nuanced than their past two records. It is a bit of a mash up of styles but it holds its own against the rest of their catalog. Especially fond of tracks 3 and 4.

Saw their show in Knoxville last week and I'm really excited for the 9:30 show. Nice mix of older material and the new stuff. Played about half of "Industry Giants" but didn't neglect some of the stronger tunes from "Head Trip in Every Key" and "The Fabulous 8 Track Sounds."

Man, I've been seeing a lot of bad reviews for Beware...and it's really surprising me.  I LOVE IT.  I mean, yeah, you put it against I See A Darkness and I can see how someone would be disappointed if that's what you like/want from Billy every time.  I personally wouldn't want another Darkness...it stands alone.  They're just really really different...Beware is really creepy and funny at times, but has an overall sound of happy and light, whereas you can barely glean any "light" from Darkness...it's dark and heavy, lyrics and music alike.  Beware still has some dark lyrics but hidden under a shiny veneer.  First track, Beware Your Only Friend, is case in point.  I find it to be even darker because of the facade.  I wonder if the people who don't like it are truly paying attention, or if they just really have a problem with that jangly country stuff (understandable, but I personally love it).

I've been seeing a lot of similar opinions, from huge SFA fans and otherwise.  DD/LY is still a hell of a listen to me, despite 2+ plays a day since it was released.  Some of the songs have revealed themselves to be SFA classic worthy, even if it didn't seem so it first.

But, as I've stated, I worship everything released by those guys.  And will passionately argue their greatness, and hopefully acclaimed place in music history.

New SFA is incredible after one listen.  It's bigger, louder and heavier than just about anything they've ever done.  I'm quite the SFA freak, but I'd recommend checking the album out if you get a chance.

Anybody else had a chance to check this one out?

According to an interview Gruff did before the album came out, he said they weren't playing any indoor gigs for a while.  However, seeing as they're playing some British festivals this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if they do a US club tour in the late-summer/fall.  The album comes out in the US April 21, so maybe there'll be some announcement around then.  I hope they tour for the album, it sounds like it'd be a great album to hear live.  Unfortunately, I've read that US tours haven't been the most profitable option for the band in the past.  But I'd be very surprised if they did no US shows.

Hmm:
"'Hard Islands' is the assured and confident new installment from 25 year old Nathan Fake, the Norfolk born and bred precocious young heir to the UK electronica
throne who has kept fans of fuzzy-edged synths and maximal acidic techno beats alike guessing ever since his debut release at the tender age of 19.

A six track long serious contender in the loudness wars, 'Hard Islands' sets up camp in that fuzzy middle ground between mini-album and EP that so many
of our alt-danceheroes are choosing to occupy in this post-physical format era, where each track in the complementary collection can also stand alone as
a hedonist's anthem in its own right. Easily as melodic and musically ambitious as any of his previous works, the 'HardIslands' selection nonetheless edges
towards the tougher end of electronica that is the usual domain of Warp and Rephlex stalwarts like Clark and Aphex Twin, whilst all the time never losing
sight of that acute awareness of what will work on the dancefloor that had already enabled young Mr Fake tick off many of the world's best clubs on his
touring itinerary by the time he had reached his mid-twenties."

And the new Dirty Projectors is just as good as expected.

In recent interviews, Devo has confirmed that they will be completing their new album.  The Studio Notes section of the November 27 issue of Rolling Stone stated that "Devo are working on their first album of new material since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps. 'We have about 17 songs we're testing out," says frontman Mark Mothersbaugh. 'We've already been contacted by 20 producers - including Snoop Dogg and Fatboy Slim.'" Fall 2009 has been confirmed as a release date.

Devo announced in early 2009, that they would be performing at SXSW on March 20th, with a warmup show in Dallas on March 18th. At these shows, Devo performed a new stage show utilizing synchronized video, similar to the 1982 tour, new costumes, and three new songs: "Don't Shoot, I'm a Man!", "What We Do", and "Fresh". All of these songs included a video backdrop which the band performed in front of. Devo has also confirmed they will be performing at All Tomorrow's Parties on May 6th and 8th, with the May 6th performance featuring the band performing their first album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, in its entirety. The May 8th performance is to be a "greatest hits" show, for the ATP "Fans Strike Back" event.

On Friday, April 10th, 2009, Devo debuted the music video for "Don't Shoot (I'm a Man)" on their website, through Vimeo.

Here's one for BookerT:

Hole Class - Self-Titled LP

From the label:

"Mostly recorded on a farm in Ohio in 2006 by Beth Murphy (Times New Viking) and Rob Enbom (Eat Skull). Great pop songs from this duo with a "gothic country"
vibe that vaguely calls to mind an interpretation of Nancy and Lee by Neil and Jennifer. There is a stripped down feel and intimacy to everything here.
From roadtrip singalongs to true heartbreakers, a perfect album."

-----

From Art for Spastics:

"In other Eat Skull news, Meds has just issued an LP of the Hole Class cassette which Rob recorded with Beth from Times New Viking while he was living
in Ohio between The Hospitals' Employer Destroyers tour and moving to Portland and founding Eat Skull. Yeah, that tape was my first inkling that Rob had
any knack for pop songwriting. Before that, I mainly knew him as my favorite x-factor in various free-flailing improv bands and noise groups (Gang Wizard,
Vholtz, Hale Zukas, Horse Dwarves, etc.), although I also remember the time I saw him play a Davis house-show leading a band called Creepy Crawly Claw,
who did the best "Sex Bomb" cover I've ever heard or witnessed. He did a handstand on top of a ratty keyboard with spindly little legs and walked on the
ceiling of Mick Mucus' Charred Dog House before falling on his head. I thought for sure that he was injured, but he popped right back up with the mic clenched
in his teeth.

I'm so glad to see that Hole Class make it to vinyl after all this time. If you can imagine how Thee Duchess & the Duke might sound with some sweet kiwi-psych
damage, then you might be in the ballpark of what this album sounds like. The whole tape is on here, plus some unheard goodies."

Digging thus far.

About to give this a listen.

Not sure how much of this is legitimate and how much is a joke:
"Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain is the long-awaited new album
from Current 93 and their first album in three years,
following on from their double-platinum-selling album Black
Ships Ate The Sky, and is released on David Tibet's new label
Coptic Cat.

Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain is the most unique, most
unpredictable and most powerful album yet from Current 93.
David has brought together an amazing and bizarre array of
talents from artists as varied as Nurse With Wound's Stapleton
and Liles, rock god phenomenon Andrew W.K., haunting chanteuse
and composer Baby Dee, Grammy award-winning genius Rickie Lee
Jones, the beautiful Hush Arbor's Keith Wood, world famous
porn-star (and winner of the Best Three Way Sex Scene and Best
Group Scene at the Adult Video Network awards) Sasha Grey,
Pantaleimon's enchanted Andria Degens, guitar-hero James
Blackshaw, Cyclobe and Coil's Ossian Brown, NYC legend Matt
Sweeney (ZWAN, Neil Diamond, Superwolf), extraordinary
percussionist supreme Alex Neilson (Red Krayola, Trembling
Bells, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), counter-culture guru William
Breeze and heavenly cellist John Contreras (Marc Almond, Baby
Dee) and created an album unlike any other ever. Ever!"

Cryptacize - Mythomania

"Cryptacize deals in the unforgettable melody, the forsaken chord and the extravagant sentiment. It's a distinct kind of pleasure they offer, not casual
background or 'lifestyle' music. An unlikely synthesis of musical styles, Mythomania (Cryptacize's second) is an album not quite like any other. Nedelle
Torrisi's surefooted and richly nuanced vocal arabesques, like a modern day Freddie Mercury or Ronnie Spector, strangely complement Chris Cohen's guitar,
maniacally sped-up a la Les Paul or staccato and funny like Roy Smeck or Adolph Jacobs of the Coasters. Michael Carreira's syncopated drum corps rudiments
and pit-orchestra rave-ups propel the songs with a refreshingly buoyant touch that never lapses into rock music cliches. There are also widescreen cinematic
moments that take on a mournful and otherworldly pathos, like Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror" but with vocals by Cambodian 60's pop legend Ros Serey
Sothea - or like Arabic diva Fairouz singing along to a psychedelic film score by Popol Vuh.

Mythomania is a revelation by anyone's measure. The playing shows a new level of confidence and intent, as well as an artful sense of timing - it's the
sound of a band that's found themselves and is growing by leaps and bounds. Patiently built ideas are brought to full fruition, and it's recorded in fidelity
that surrounds you. The music is thicker and more continuous; in addition to autoharp, guitars and drums there are now electric basses, keyboards, piano,
even found or purely electronic sounds. And yet the same sense of space and suspense which guided 2008's Dig That Treasure is instantly recognizable on
Mythomania. In fact, the contrast between emptiness and fullness seems even greater now, just as the music's emotional highs and lows have been brought
into abnormally high relief.

As the title Mythomania suggests, reality is transformed when fiction is created upon fiction and though it may be barely recognizable or compatible with
the world of the everyday, this reality can also be beautiful - see for example the album's title track, an allegorical tale about the moon's view of earthly
folly. Exploring the paradox of human perception, a personal ambivalence about time and change, the notions of chance and free will versus those of eternalism
and fate, the limits of credibility and belief, Mythomania builds upon the philosophical concerns of Dig That Treasure. Like its predecessor, its tone
is often both happy and sad, pragmatic and mystical, hopeful and doomed.

Never ones to follow the rules, Cryptacize have been touring the US in a Toyota Corolla (opening for bands as diverse as Why?, Danielson, Shearwater, Ponytail,
Magik Markers, Marnie Stern, The Blow, Mirah, etc.) performing using miniature amps and drums - a sight which has caught many a spectator off guard. They
are a thoroughly unconventional band, but one that is somehow miraculously easy on the ears. Deceptively simple, using modest means to achieve ambitious
ends, never predictable, Cryptacize challenges preconceptions about how a song should go or how rock music should make you feel. But in the end, they always
leave you with a tune you can hum and lyrics that tell a story."

That's the second time in the last few weeks I've seen Fairouz name-checked in describing an album or artist. And I can actually hear the resemblance  in the first track.

Also for BookerT:
Vaselines remasters leaked.

And this:
"Despite classical training at the Juilliard and the finest classical schools in the world, Psychedelic Horseshit became the purveyors of a new brand of
music, made for a nation too bankrupt to buy anything and too morbidly obese to dance: what urban tastemakers would later dub 'shitgaze.' Their self-released
'Golden Oldies' rescues their earliest, pioneering recordings, put forth in 2005-06 on primitive, circular pieces of plastic that our ancestors called
'CDRs.' These tracks truly capture the spirit of America during a sad era: confused, in disarray, yet determined to plod forward all the same." -- Alan
Lomax IV, 2079

From Pitchfork:

-- Indie guitar hero David Pajo's got something to say: He recorded a Misfits tribute album today. (Actually, he recorded it in 2004, but saying so would've fucked up my "Last Caress" reference.) Pajo's Scream With Me is out now on Black Tent Press. It's a limited run of 1000 130-gram vinyl copies, all of which come with a CD. For some reason, "London Dungeon" isn't on it. Pajo is also currently on the road with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Does anyone know if that Pajo Misfits record every came out?  On his site, it mentioned it was coming out in January, but I haven't heard anything else about it.

Danger Mouse is in dispute with EMI over his new project with Sparklehorse so he's releasing a blank CDR (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090515/1154504899.shtml)
instead.

NPR is streaming the album here (http://=http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104129585) and it's available for download elsewhere.

i can only guess that the dispute involves the fact that Sparklehorse is signed to EMI and they probably feel they should be releasing the record and or it goes back to EMI suing Dangermouse over the "Grey Album".

of course now EMI is going to look like a bunch of idiots for not releasing the album with all the free press it's going to get and one wonders why the majors are going down....

Streaming the Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse tracks second through and am very much enjoying this one... Epic fail on EMI's part, seeing as David Lynch's involvement alone would have a nice chuck of sales.

Man of Aran Artwork and Tracklisting
22 April 2009
British Sea Power scored Man Of Aran release date is May 18th, 2009

British Sea Power have written and recorded a new soundtrack for the 1934 film Man Of Aran. The film is being re-released on DVD with the new BSP soundtrack ? a release which will be preceded by the band performing the soundtrack live to the film at BFI Southbank on 23 April. The BSP Man Of Aran package includes two discs ? the re-scored Man Of Aran DVD, plus the soundtrack by itself on CD.

?It?s a wonderful film,? says BSP guitarist Noble. ?The images vary between huge drama and a brilliant kind of ridiculousness ? check out the amazing foot-wide bobbled berets that the fishermen wear. It?s a great look, like a 1930s Irish version of Jack White or Kraftwerk. It?s a film that?s also relevant to the current era ? a time when the idea of living a simpler life is in the air. The film shows something I?d like to think I could do, but know I never will.?

Man Of Aran is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. In a series of startling black-and-white sequences the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release.

The package includes three versions:

Studio Version in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Stereo.
Original Edinburgh Film Festival live performance in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
and 2.0 Stereo.
Bonus Soundtrack in 2.0 Stereo ? an abstract ambient piece from Yan.
Tracklisting

07. Spearing The Sunfish
08. Conneely Of The West
09. The North Sound

Sounds like...uhh...Dinosaur Jr.

Which gives it automatic top 10 of year status if you're a Dino Jr. fan unless you're walkonby. But those of us who love and cherish the four other albums (that shit between Bug and Beyond didn't count) will treasure this one as well.

Arctic Monkeys are pleased to announce they will be releasing their as-yet-untitled third album on Monday 24th August 2009.

Produced by Josh Homme in the Mojave Desert and LA, and with James Ford in Brooklyn, the album features ten new Arctic Monkeys songs.

The tracklisting is as follows:

01. My Propeller
02. Crying Lightning
03. Dangerous Animals
04. Secret Door
05. Potion Approaching
06. Fire & The Thud
07. Cornerstone
08. Dance Little Liar
09. Pretty Visitors
10. The Jeweller's Hands

Screen Vinyl Image - Interceptors

Top EPs:

Scarlet Youth - Breaking The Patterns

Where You Been is Dino's strongest album, IMO. But hey, every album has something great to offer. Without a Sound even has some incredible moments. I think "On the Way" is my favorite song of J's. Genius.

'Farm' is pretty good but lacks the visceral punch of 'Beyond', which ended up being both immediately awesome and long-lasting. I really dug that album. And was pleased to see some people piping up in defense of Dino Jr's 90s output. Where You Been, for me, is just behind Bug as the best Dino Jr album. Living All Over Me is a great record to be sure, but I've always liked Bug the best. It was the first Dino album I heard, so that's a factor.

All that said, nothing has grabbed me this year as much as Fever Ray other than the Boss Hogg Outlawz, but that was 08.

another convert. mos def is truly one of the great hip hop artists. and his new disc is super too.

also, he's far and away the best rapper/actor ever.

oh and as to how he's indie?

well he began on Rawkus Records, which i believe would make him indie. but truthfully, any rapper that crosses over to the mainly white indie rock crowd gets to play Coachella/Lollapalooza and gets to be on XMU.

Also, he's now on Downtown records which is a fabulous (yet not indie) label which has Justice, MSTRKRFT, Cold War Kids, Santigold, Eagles of Death Metal, etc.

plus, he's one of the only celebrities to publicly dismiss Al Qaeda's involvement in 9/11. (and sharing that view, i admire him for that). thats pretty indie!

Several years in gestation, the Riceboy Sleeps project was first
conceived as an outlet for Jonsi and his boyfriend Alex's visual art,
resulting in the highly covetable 1,000 limited edition A6 book,
printed in Iceland to highly exacting spec. Gallery shows and video
installations followed, and with them the creation of the first
dream-like soundscapes towards what would become this album.

Recorded at home in between Sigur Rs commitments, the music took
shape slowly, and suffered a near fatal setback when the computer on
which it was all stored was dragged from the kitchen table in the
days before Apple had magnetic power leads. Fortunately some nifty
and painstaking keyhole surgery effected during a sojourn in Hawaii
resulted in complete recovery of the splendid specimen soon to be
before you.

We will send you details of the different formats available in due
course, but for now immerse yourself in 'Boy 1904', which features
the buried treasure of the only known recording of the last ever
castrato singer. No wonder this music seems beamed in from another
time and place.

The indie rock journeyman is ready to release his second LP under his own name, Goodnight Unknown, on October 6 via Merge. The record is produced by Andrew Murdock (Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold [?!]) and features guest turns from the Melvins' Dale Crover and singer-songwriter Lisa Germano."

"Just because he's back to slugging away corroded bass tones for Dinosaur Jr. doesn't mean Lou Barlow has stopped writing songs for his own projects.

Air -- Love 2
October 6th

AWESOME
If it sounds in the vein of Moon Safari, Premiere Symptomes, or Talkie Walkie -- yes, AWESOME. If it sounds like 10,000hz Legend or Pocket Symphony -- eh, not so much.

according to PF, things are looking good for fans of classic Air:

Air's new album of lush pop, excellently titled Love 2, is due out October 6 on Astralwerks. New song "Do the Joy" is not the official single from the record-- that would be "Sing Sang Sung", out August 25-- but it is the first thing you can hear from it.

Head over to Air's official site http://www.aircheology.com/, fill in a fake name, a real e-mail address, and get a code to download "Do the Joy" from iTunes. I just did it; it works. And-- guess what-- this thing is pretty Air-y! Robot voices, spaced-out synths, a general cloud-jumping vibe-- it's all here. Based on this song alone, it seems like the "back to Moon Safari" hype may not be completely unwarranted this time.

Anyone hear the new Dino Jr. or Oneida records yet?  eMusic's description of the Rated O made it sound more rock-based than the last few folky sounding records.

The last one, Preteen Weaponry was very rock-based, too.

Still yet to hear Rated O. Actually, I started it but didn't get far.

The new Dino Jr. stands right up there with Beyond and the first three.
And the new Jay Reatard is filled with tasty 60's psych-ish earworms.

Does anyone else who's heard this Jay Reatard think it's full of emo-tastic lyrics? Musically, it might be his strongest effort but I dunno; ending the album by repeating the line "there is no sun for me" just reeks of wrist-slashery and that's just one of many examples.

Well, both vinyl showed up today, so I have some serious listening to do.  That Dino Jr record sleeve is pretty.

Not sure about new music, but that makes me a little more psyched for the show this Thursday.  I'm hoping that, without a new album, they'll focus on some killer deep cuts.  We'll see...I've been a little bummed at the lack of variety at the last two area shows.  It seems the night before or after always get the better list...

Master Musicians of Bukkake - Totem One

This is a must-have for anyone into the bands mentioned in the following review. Plus, they have the greatest band name since Aids Wolf:
"First things first: yes, that is the name of this band and no, it is not a soundtrack to some new pornographic film. Instead, this is the second album from
Seattle-based collective, which features members/collaborators of Sun City Girls, Earth, Sunn O))), Secret Chiefs 3 and Grails. This album definitely comes across as a clusterfuck of the styles of the mentioned acts, mixing psych-rock, drone and tribal world music, this sounds like the peyote-fueled ragas of a scuzzy desert cult searching for water and the Fountain of Youth. Seriously, if you are a fan of psychedelic rock, drone or anything with a tribal
atmosphere, this very well may be your album of the year."

Vivian Girls' new one just leaked.

Good looks on the APTBS.

Banco de Gaia's latest release, "MEMORIES DREAMS REFLECTIONS" is a double CD which encapsulates everything that Toby's sound has evolved from, and into, over the past two decades. Featuring new tracks, remakes and overhauls of widely favoured classics including remixes of Hawkwind, King Crimson, and not at all in the least, a stellar twenty two minute remake of the legendary Pink Floyd ensemble, "Echoes", illustrates in painstaking detail the history of the Banco de Gaia act.

Recently signed as the newest Disciples of Southern Lord Records, Pelican are presently finishing up their newest album, entitled What We All Come To Need. The album, the band?s first full-length for their new label, is impressively described by guitarist Laurent Lebec as ?the most perfect synthesis of everything we?ve done to date, sonically.?

The new album also features such a long list of guest stars that perhaps the name of the album should have been Metal House Party 3 featuring Martin Lawrence and sunn 0))). The album features Greg Anderson of sunn 0))), Aaron Turner of Isis, Ben Verellen of Harkonen, and Helms Alee and Allen Epley from The Life & Times and Shiner.

Lebec elaborated further on the content of the album, saying, ?There is a current of inspiration that feels particular to each album?s music and titles. Though we lack a singer, the song names are often conceptual. This new album speaks to a rapidly decaying world, the fulfillment we find in each other, as well as the resolve to move beyond disillusionment.?

Snailhook, this guy still needs to make his DC debut.

"Portland, OR. bedroom wanderer Ilyas Ahmed emerges from the shadows and offers up his first new batch of songs in some time. Over a year in the making,
'Goner' sees Ahmed telescoping his previous acoustic wanderings into fuzzed out rockers and a hypnotic set of beautifully tight knit nocturnes. The kick
off of 'Earn Your Blood' is probably the most amped up and stoned out Ahmed has ever sounded, a heavy blown out thump of hiss & electric strum. From there
'Goner' really gets lost. Loner howls, model hypnosis, desolate vamps... it's all here. The comedown into 'Exit Twilight' with Grouper on vocals is as
haunting a broadcast you'll hear all year, for sure to knock around in your skull for days. Edition of 1000 CD's in an offset buff case with maroon ink."

Robert Wyatt - Radio Experiment Rome, 1981

"An unusual detour in the Robert Wyatt catalogue, Radio Experiment Rome was recorded in February 1981, when the ex-Soft Machine drummer had been
invited to record some material in-progress for a radio broadcast. The tone of these sessions is characterised by a free-roaming experimentation, laying
down eight-track recordings of vocals, piano, hi-hat, jaw harp and a variety of analogue tape effects. This is Wyatt unhinged and completely let loose
from the agenda of proper album recording: there's no eye on a finished, commercially viable product here, and the scope of the project takes in jazzy
soundscapes like 'Heathens Have No Souls', exquisitely melodic piano pieces like 'L'Albero Degli Zoccoli', vaudevillian vocal tuning experiment 'Billie's
Bounce' and the politicised rant-poem 'Born Again Cretin', about the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela."

Zak Sally on his new album Fear of Song:

"In typical La Mano fashion, it's a handmade, signed and numbered deal, with me doing the printing i was able to do myself and each copy hand assembled
right here, by me (with some help from my crack intern Maddie and whatever pals i can bribe into helping out).
and this is where we get into some weirdness, because obviously, Zak Sally, is, you know-- ME. so if i were someone else, i could go on about my years
in the minimalist rock trio LOW, (and stints with other outfits such as Enemy Mine, the Dirty Three, Kid Dakota), and how i started making this record
in my basement over a year ago just to see if i could finish ONE SONG (this being something that had been a REAL PROBLEM for the previous 36 years of my
life), but then actually started enjoying the process until finally i went over to my good old friend Ben Durrant's (Andrew Bird, Dosh, tons of great stuff...)
Crazy Beast Studio and slowly tore our hair out strand by strand until, LOOK-- a WHOLE RECORD! NEAT!!
and, if i wasn't me, i could say-- it's a good record. i set myself with the goal of making EVERY SOUND on the thing, and so that's what it sounds like.

it sounds like me.

and, to be honest, whether you like the music or not, i think you'd be hard pressed to find a physical object containing music on it where the artist was
MORE INVOLVED in every aspect of the thing; i mean, i made all the sounds and all that, but i also designed it, and laid it out for printing, then made
the plates (poly, on a hopped-up HP computer printer), then PRINTED the damn thing on my OWN PRESS, and did all the machine trimming and folding, then
HAND GLUED a 4" square to the front of each one then a 2" square to the BACK of each one then HAND folded and taped each sleeve (which i ALSO printed)
and inserted the disc and then just to beat a dead horse i SIGNED AND NUMBERED EACH ONE and shoved it in a vinyl sleeve, and it's just about 97% sure that
I'LL be the guy packing it up and sending it to you, and...look: I DID EVERYTHING BUT MILK THE FUCKING SQUID ON THIS THING. i'm not listing all this to
toot my horn or to impress you (because it's not like someone was holding a gun to my head telling me to do it this way, you know, it's just that this
kind of stuff is WHAT I LIKE), just because...you should know what your $13 bucks is getting you. this isn't a PRODUCT. you know those cd's in jewel cases
or digipaks? well this isn't that. this is something different, and all this is stuff I'D want to know, so i'm telling you here."

Om - God is Good is interwebbing.

This will dictate whether I leave DC9 after the Six Organs set for Lucero or stick around.

Promising so far.

Edit: Enjoying this a lot. Adding the dude from Grails on drums makes their pallet much more diverse musically. Al's lyrical content about death and the middle east and biblical references is getting tired, though.

Hear Massive Attack's Collaboration With Tunde From TV on the Radio (http://pitchfork.com/news/36400-hear-massive-attacks-collaboration-with-tunde-from-tv-on-the-radio/)

Massive Attack's new EP Splitting the Atom is out October 6 in the U.S. (October 5 in the UK) via Virgin. That's the surprisingly colorful cover up there. The EP features vocals from Horace Andy, Martina Topley-Bird, and Elbow's Guy Garvey.

Now, you can listen to the release's marquee collaboration, the near-seven-minute "Pray for Rain" featuring TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. It's dark, it's epic, it's as apocalyptic as you want it to be: (see link below, then click on "continue reading", for LaLa player)

wait, i thought the jonas brothers were doing the same thing.  artistic puberty?

Miley Cyrus finding her voice on new EP

New York ? It's only been a year since Miley Cyrus released her first official studio album, "Breakout." But the 16-year-old says in that time she's found her voice as an artist ? and that's reflected on her new EP.

"I think I've been able to give myself more say. I think at first I was a little more afraid of what I could and what I could not say," the singer and actress said before performing at the "VH1 Divas" concert Thursday night.

"The Times of Our Lives," released last month exclusively at Walmart, features the hit tune "Party In the U.S.A.," which is currently No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The album includes songs about love and relationship drama.

Cyrus says she's growing as a musician and a woman ? and she's not afraid to show it.

"I think about it anytime I write a song, I'm like, "Why can't I say that? Why can't you say what you feel?" the "Hannah Montana" star asked.

"There shouldn't be an age or a certain kind of cookie-cutter way of doing things. You can say what you want to. It's about being an artist. That's what an artist is."

The sound collaginess of this Broadcast EP/mini-album reminds me so much of Black Foliage-era OTC. Especially the subtle shifts between noisy instrumental pieces and more traditional pop songs (of which there are very few). I keep expecting a tight Hart/Doss vocal harmony to jump out at me out of nowhere.

It's also a recording that demands for lossless sound quality/good headphones before the listener can get the full scope of what's going on in most of it.

Psychedelic Horseshit - Too Many Hits 2x7"

"The final installment of CDRSCY1! Is Psychedelic Horseshit - Too Many Hits. It is in 2x7" format and has 10 songs. It is, in a lot of ways the follow up
to Magic Flowers Droned. Each gatefold sleeve is hand signed w/ the subscribers name... the whole nine yards. We really pulled out all the stops on this
one to have a great finale to the CDRSCY1! Singles club."

"Ever Sit Down on a Box Set and Have an Orgasm? Well, Now You Can with Rammstein?s Latest!

This week,  Rammstein  released a new album titled Liebe Ist Fr Alle Da ("Love Is There for Everyone"). Who gives a shit about Rammstein, right?? WRONG. Not only did these crazy
German pervs recently release a video for first single "Pussy" on
adult website Visit-x
? which appropriately features a chick rubbing her poon, another sucking off some dude?s throbbing gristle, and a high-arc cum shot that ker-splats on
a to-be-lusted-over blonde?s ass ? they?ve also released a box set version of the album that rivals The Smashing Pumpkins? Aeroplane Flies High as the
best box set ever!

Scheduled for release later this year, the set features a special-edition version that contains the full album, five extra tracks, and blah, blah, blah,
who gives a shit about the actual music, etc. The real draw? THE SEX TOYS. Yes, dear TMT reader, the set, housed in a metal flight case, comes with handcuffs,
lubricant, and SIX pink dildos. This means you can have one up your ass, one in your vag, one in your mouth, and still have three leftover to stick in
friends and family! Not quite ready to stick a fatty dildo up your turd-shooter? Don?t worry! Rammstein have included dildos of various sizes, so if you
think, say, dildo #5 looks rather tasty, it wouldn?t be a bad idea to sit on #4 first and work your way up. The best part? The dildos are apparently sized
according to the band members? members, so now you can practice all you want before Rammstein passionately deflowers you in person.

Now this is how you stay relevant! Ball?s in your court, Vampire Weekend."

I'll do Grohl one better and say that the Foos need to be put out of their misery forever. I kind of wish this happened after the first album/tour. That way, we would've never had to endure "Everlong," "My Hero" or "Learn to Fly."

Portishead sign to Amnesty

Portishead are releasing a brand new track, - "Chase the tear" for Amnesty International.

It will be available as an exclusive download single from 7 digital http://www.7digital.com/portisheadamnesty from December 10th with all earnings going towards Amnesty's human rights work and all rights given to the organisation indefinitely.

A video of Portishead performing ''Chase the Tear'' will also be available from 10 December at: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/portishead and at http://www.portishead.co.uk

International human rights day (10 December) marks the anniversary of the United Nation's historic "Universal Declaration Of Human Rights" on 10 December 1948. The UDHR set out for the first time in a single document the fundamental rights to which everyone, everywhere is entitled - including the right to life, liberty, security, the freedoms of opinion, association and expression, and the right not to be subjected to torture or cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.

For more information: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/udhr

(first link is the best to preview the song, IMO)
