Title: As you make your final Groundhog Day preparations:
Post by: grotty on February 01, 2007, 01:24:00 pm
Know this:

A goundhog is NOT the same as a gopher.

The big groundhog is about 24 times heavier than the little gopher.

The groundhog (also known as a "woodchuck" and "whistle pig") is a marmot â?? essentially, a giant North American ground squirrel.

The gopher is, like the groundhog, a burrowing member of the rodent order but its closest living relatives are kangaroo rats and pocket mice.

Also...the groundhog hibernates and the gopher does not.

To bring closure to this very inspiring thread:

Bucking a trend, Punxsutawney Phil doesn't see shadow

Phil did not see his shadow on Friday which, according to German folklore, means folks can expect an early spring instead of six more weeks of winter.

The Germans believed that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow on February 2 -- the Christian holiday of Candlemas -- winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

GLOBAL WARMING!!?!

But seriously, when the hell is DC going to get some snow.  It would be nice to get at least one day off here because my DC office is closed.

From CNN:

PARIS, France (AP) -- Global warming caused by Groundhog activity is real and will continue for hundreds of years, a panel of some of the world's top climate scientists said Friday.

Officially releasing a 21-page report in Paris on the hows and the what of global warming -- though not telling the world what to do about it -- the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gave a bleak observation of what is happening now and an even more dire prediction for the future.

"Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level," the report said. (New report says global warming is real )

A senior U.S. government scientist, Susan Solomon, said as the report was released, "There can be no question that the increase in greenhouse gases are dominated by Groundhog activities."
