Delgados hate is fantastic.....
I bought Finley Quaye on a whim for a$1 at CD game exchange last week. Its OK. The first song sounds like white reggae though, think UB40. It deinitely gets better in the middle. The singles, I think there were four are all really rather good. Good summerey background music in my opinion.

Well I am not sure how fmailiar you are with his other work, but it is mellower than a lot of Son Volts work, it is similar to his other solo work, better than Sebastapol (sp?) but I think the ep he released is better than this, but I have not had the new one for very long. I am hoping he does not try and reproduce the short instrumentals in the live show. There are a couple of videos of songs from a recent show in New York at www.jayfarrar.net (http://www.jayfarrar.net)
And when I saw him in 2001 he played lots of Son Volt and some Uncle Tupelo material, it was a good show.

Actually Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis does not sing all the female parts, Nothing Better is sung by Jen Wood.

I am often amazed by the CDs I see at used stores. Inevitably I already have them because folks give classics away. Though, if it's not your cup of tea, it's not your cup of tea.

I bought it for a dollar, and now I can't get rid of it. Figure I'll make a profit on it if I can find a buyer. One good song; the rest was just unlistenable and tuneless.

Oh Rhett, we may both love Pernice Bros, but I think we have some great divergences as well. Certainly every song is not great, but there are at least 4 or 5 that I think are fabulous: "Bottle of Fur," "Sister Havana," "Positive Bleeding," "Erika Cane" and I'm sure one or two others I can't think of. But, it's true, the songs I don't like I don't like much at all.

Perhaps I should give it more than the once over. Only one song was catchy the first time through. I'm just getting very picky, since I already have so much GREAT music. If something is merely GOOD, it seems more and more pointless to bother with. Perhaps I am becoming Mankie.

Nope, I'm with you on that. I find I'm much less likely to *try* to like an album or band. Good example, Grandaddy. They have that one song out now as a single that I think is awful. But hey, I don't *need* to like Grandaddy, so it's okay.
I also find I give up on books more easily as well, with my free time harder to come by these days.

Twice is $15 at DCCD. Or there is Amazon. Personally I would wait and buy it at the show ($10 and the band probably make more of the cash).
Once is trickier, only Amazon and ebay. It wasnt for sale at the show.
I could supply copies of both for you to listen to before their show with nada surf.
Teenage fanclub and jad fair.... well its an odd juxtaposition. I havent listened enough to it to pass a final judgement. Its not a real instant hit. But that is possibly a good thing.

Hey markie, I gave Turin Brakes a listen yesterday.....the very first song on the album I though, "Jayzus! Radiohead or what?" and almost ripped the headphones off thinking you were taking the piss, but while I was nodding in amusement to myself at your little joke the next song came on. I ended up hearing 20 seconds of every song on the album....not bad, not bad at all. It was $17.99 so didn't shell out that much but will see if it shows up in a used cd place.

Just the first song sounded "exactly" like Radiohead...I agree with you about Thom and his friends though..they were okay at one time, but quickly became booooring. I saw them live once and it was fine, but no need to see them again.

What I have read about Beulah's forth coming album is that it won't have as much brass as previous efforts, if I am remembering correctly.

OK, no BJM for you then. the high strung are strokesish libertinesish new york band who just played velvet lounge. With any luck they will support BJM when they play here next.

I have not listened to the professionals yet. For some reason itunes decided not to bother copying it my ipod along with all my other recent rips. I will be sure to listen by Sunday though.

But I was just surprised pale saints were kind of obscure and overshadowed by their labelmates.

It's not bad. Sounds a little dated, but it was well worth the $0.50 I paid for it.
All Music isn't known for their keen insight. It's pretty much on a par with Pigeonhole.

allmusic normally gets the stars right for an individul band though. It normally sorts the wheat from the chaff. Although I am still bitter about Sandinistas 2 stars.

I have not heard the first EP but like the new one, and like the male singers voice, one of the main reasons I like Smart Went Crazy. I like the last song on the new ep a lot.

the whisper on the street I heard about this album was true, it's a great mature, heavily layered and very hypnotic pop album from a criminal ignored band from delaware...

The cover of The Knobs' new album shows a boy whose face is half in light and half in shadow. It's an interesting dichotomy and one that I can hear on Guilt. These are pure indie pop songs, taking hints from the melodies of The Beatles and The Beach Boys as well as structure and style from Built to Spill and The Flaming Lips. The songs are sometimes dark and moody and others uplifting and vibrant. The lyrics alternate between somber introspection and cheerful good-natureness. And it's a style that works for The Knobs. It sounds like they are a pop band that wanted to do more than just create another Beatles-influenced modern pop album, and that's what Guilt turns out to be.
"Pour it On" starts off sounding almost like a Hayden song, soft and depressing, just a singer and acoustic guitar. The other instruments come in for the chorus, and the vocals get higher and prettier. This over six-minute song has elements of introspection and elements of elation. There's even some strings and organ here. "Run" has a more upbeat rhythm but still has a darker undertone, due in large part to the perfect blend of the soft vocals and the guitar work, as well as the low-bass cello. "Have Mercy Tonight" has a kind of urgent intensity but the most rock-catchy chorus and backing vocals. "We've Got It All" is probably the most fun track and the most bouncy. The vocals are perfect, with perfect harmonies, and there are lots of horns in here to make this a fun, happy track. I can't help but think of some of the bouncy Brit-pop bands that play this style of pop. There's some definite White Revolver-era Beatles influence here. "Circuit Rider" is keyboard-laden track with some surf-rock sounding background guitars, at times almost sounding like a cross between a Depeche Mode song and a James Bond theme song. "Cut Out Bins" has a 70's feel to it too, even throwing in some twangy guitar for effect. "Edgemoor Mural" is another stand-out pop track that has the feel of several different styles but is addictive on its own largely because of the vocals, including a whole "ba-ba-ba-ba" part. I'm a sucker for those parts. And the album ends with the mellow Beatles-esque "Mr. Fosters Lament."
All the elements of a poppy, melody-laden album are here, but The Knobs sound to me like a band that's done that already. Now they're looking to do something more, something more mature. This album has a very big sound, very full. And the music has a somber mood behind it. But it's still pop, catchy and excellent. I can't help but think of the way The Flaming Lips have modified their sound for their last, well-received album, creating a fuller, more mature pop sound. The Knobs are doing the same thing, and they have crafted an excellent pop album.

The Knobs sounds great -- a way to complement the many more straightforward, upbeat Beatles-influenced pop albums I have.

The "Brady Bunch" have always been one of my favourite shows. I never knew that they even made albums like the "Partridge Family" did. This CD features all of the songs that were played on some of their musically themed episodes. Songs like "Time To Change" which was from the episode when Peter's voice started changing, and "Keep On" from the show where they get on the televised talent show. There are some other songs from Maureen McCormick & Christopher Knight, and Florence Henderson even gets in on the action with a solo performance. Although, "The Brady Bunch" had so many incarnations after it went off the air, this compilation is a great blast from the past, and sounds great too!

Well, I will admit that I have this album. Before you cast aspersions, I bought it just after seeing "The Real Live Brady Bunch Show" at Kennedy Center, which was so funny my sister and I *cried* during the performance. They closed with a couple of the better known songs and they ROCKED THE HOUSE.
Thing is, those are the only songs you want to listen to, and it's all about nostalgia. So there are, like, three songs worth listening to...
Now the Partridge Family, *those* are good pop songs.

I would have to agree with that assessment. Clearlake aren't bad but the singer kind of gets on my nerves. One of those take it or leave them kind of bands.
About the new Dandy's album, I like it but have to agree that it isn't their best work, yet still good.
Oh, and Markie, I have the same thoughts on the new Super Furry Animals album but probably like it just a little less than you do. It's just too flat for me.

His voice some how is flat within the music, Rings around the world, the sound was somehow much more bright and the vocal and music much more like two seperate flattering parts, rather than the more dirgey single noise of phantom power.

No, it's not just you. Granted, there's something to be said for consistancy but Phantom Power just doesn't have enough changes of any kind. Really no crescendos or tiny little spaces that accentuate the other sounds. It's just flatter all the way through, from beginning to end.
The production on Rings Around The World is spectacular (which, some hold against it, with claims of over-produced, etc.) but PP seems like plain old crank 'em out production. Guess they didn't rake in the money from RATW that the record company expected so cut their budget. Too bad.

a huge thanks for prompting me to dig this one out of the archives, it got overlooked when i got my hands on it. my reaction when relistening to it this morning was WOW is this a great record. its got great mixtape potential. hard to believe that toy instruments can sound so funky. i love the sprinkling of toy pianos and xylophones on top of some distorted toy guitars and drums.
the list of toys used in the recording is pretty amusing as well... in addition to various toy pianos and guitaris also listed is centipede, my 1st years spinning toy, my first football, my 1st shaver and assorted generic toy cell phones...

a TON of stuff came out today too!!!! We spent hours last night putting it all up.

Beulah is good. I don't have Heartstrings, but Yoko is similar to The Coast is Never Clear, perhaps even a little more consistent.
BSP was released in the US today. I got them both at Olssons.

I posted in Mogwai as you posted this. I think the first Decemberists album has more clear high points to me, 7 out of the 10 songs are really good, nothing jumped out at me like track 8 on the first album although the Chimbley Sweep sounded pretty good if I remember correctly.

my undergrad was in math. then i desided i wanted to be a teacher, so i needed some sort of education degree. rather than get another bachelors degree, i did a master's program. all teachers in new york state were required to get a master's degree in education within some amount of time after starting to teach anyway (maybe 3 or 5 years, don't remember)

Okay, that explains it. The requirenments are different here but they do require tons and tons of course work, crap Education classes and graduate classes. I got my certification while in undergrad so already had my certification, which I learned the hard way, doesn't mean shit!!! Funny thing is, if we don't keep taking endless amounts of course work, they will fire us and replace us with those who have none of it. :roll: That includes highly certified teachers with 2 or more Masters degrees and years and years of experience, all in the name of accountability. Fucking idiots!

I saw Lost in Translation over two weeks ago (got in to the preview screening -- they had passes at DCCD). It is really excellent; I still think about it sometimes. Bill Murray is fantastic, funny but subtle and very nuanced. It's definitely a character piece.

Just be careful it does not send you to sleep. The second track, "lay me down" is rather fine though.

Goddamn this is a great double-disc set (and 99% of the time, I hate double albums). Put both discs into the carousel, hit random, and let the goodness flow. Plus, it's only eleven bucks at Best Buy if you move quick-like.
#2 on the hi-fi is Canyon's 'Empty Room', unless I feel like listening to the 'Live in NYC' disc, which is also good.
