Is there anywhere other than the chains (Papa Johns, Manny & Olgas) that delivers good, basic pizza in the U street/Logan Circle area? Alberto's in Dupont is too expensive and slow for my taste.
I saw Mario's was opening a location way up on Georgia Ave, anyone know if they're open and if they'd deliver down to Logan?
-
Armand's Pizza (http://www.armandspizza.com/newsite/loc_19thstreet.html?loc=19thstreet&loci=2) would probably deliver to your place, according to the information listed on the website.

Politely talk about all things pizza here. Even that Culkin kid whose name I can't spell.

Calzones v. Pizza - Opinions?
Spurred by the closing of D.P. Dough in College Park.
There is a neat little Halal pizza place in old Greenbelt called DMV Pizza that sells what is essentially a small pizza folded in half.
Their pizza is alright, but a little saucy.
Also, it seems in Montreal all the cheap pizza places have meal deals including greasy, gravey-ey poutine and I really really think that could sell in the states.

mmmm poutine...now your talking

So board started poutine truck?

Calzones v. Pizza - Opinions?
I'm very much a calzone fan. I've never had a bad calzone -- I've had many bad pizzas. When in doubt, calzone it up.
-
^ the tastemaker speaks my mind.
as a kid, there was a mall restaurant that made a calzone that i loooooooooooved. i remember going to that food court one year for my birthday meal.
and poutine destroys all. you haven't lived until you'd gotten one from a truck in the dead of a canadian winter, where the fries are too hot to eat right out of the box but by the time you get a bite to your mouth the air has cooled them off. then you slap on your skates and glide across the pond... went out to an irish pub last night and my friend ordered the "irish poutine" - corned beef and cabbage on top. ruled, surprisingly.
-
so who cares about Pizza (because obviously some of you don't know what that word means)
Where is the killer poutine in DC??

Time to start a best French fry thread, which is high jacked after 4 posts, in which we talk about where the best steak and cheese is.

Here we go... DMV tiered Pizza rankings.
Shitty Pizza
---------------------
1. Domino's Thin Crust Pizza
2. The Rest
Local Chains (more than two locations)
---------------------
1. Potomac Pizza
2. Pete's Pizza
3. Matchbox
Local
----------------------
1. Giuseppis (stolen recipe from Pittsburgh)
2. Manoli Canoli
3. Vace
Fancy Pizza (or what I refer to as fancy pizza, most likely baked in a wood burning oven)
------------------------
1. Frankly Pizza
2. Angel's Pizza and Pasta (In the Wheaton Mall no less!)
3. Pizza Paradiso
4. Inferno Pizza
5. Timber Pizza
-
Local Chains (more than two locations)
---------------------
2. Pete's Pizza
It's Pete's aPizza. IMO one of the best...do not deliver and apparently Arlington doesn't agree as the Clarendon one closed recently
Where is 2 Amys
I think Flipping Pizza is makes a decent slice
Pupatella also makes a pretty mean pie
-
Of the four "build your own" personal pizza places I've tried:
Blaze - garbage
MOD - weirdly flavorless
Lotsa - good to very good
&Pizza - excellent

Other than their website address, I've never heard anyone refer to it with the "a" in front of it. The Silver Spring used to deliver and also closed... I think they were just a victim of too many locations, at any rate, still great pizza IMO.
Never been a fan of 2 Amys or Flippin'. 2 Amys may have fallen victim of it was in a pain in the ass location mixed with always packed.
Never heard of Pupatella, but I'll seek it out.

Agreed. Good stuff.

OTW to Stained Glass Pub for carryout.

Approved.
The Corner Pub has a good square pie... And how on earth did I forget Continental Pizza in Kensington?
-
OTW to Stained Glass Pub for carryout.
Went there for ol' times sake a few years ago and was underwhelmed. Corner Pub is better.
Continental sells pizza? Have only had cheesesteaks there but not a one in the last 20 years.
Edit to say that if I were in Kensington I'd go to Pacci's in Forest Glen. Never been but did eat at the Silver Spring location (RIP).

Yes!!! Make sure to get large square though.
We often get one square pie and a couple of cheese steaks.
-
I mostly go for the killer subs...but The Italian Store in VA really makes a killer pie...no delivery
VA used to be a waste land for pizza, but we've got a few decent ones now
-
I get the Post on the weekends because I'm an old guy, and for some reason they sent me a Friday paper today, which included this:

Are we talking about the 2 Amy’s on Macomb in Cathedral Heights? That’s pretty good pizza.

Yes. Wonder why they never opened more locations?

I mean, I can’t say I’ve ever pondered that specifically but if you have an anecdote to share on the matter, go ahead.

They half did, because they are half of Etto on 14th street: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/at-etto-simple-pleasures-abound/2013/08/20/51d7419e-f847-11e2-afc1-c850c6ee5af8_story.html

Pizza delivery does not really work. Pizza is meant to be eaten straight out of the oven or within a couple of minutes (so you don't burn your mouth). Delivery pizza will arrive 30 minutes to an hour after it is out of the oven and will be cold and soggy. This happens with a the high end craft pizza places. You almost have to rebake the pizza once it arrives to get the full experience.

The workaround is to order 1/2 baked pizza. Finish in a 500F oven for a few minutes. Huge improvement (tho still the same shitty ingredients.)

My recommended work around is Dominos thin crust. Arrives hot and delicious in 30 mins or less.

This is a thing you can do!? What places accommodate this? Teach me your ways.
-
All the places.
-
You can also order without cheese, then add your own, better cheese. Works with sauce too.
-
Also, you can just buy a ball of dough from just about anywhere. That's the hard part...
-
OK, the LC sliced bread commercial was good.
-
So Hutch mentioned oxymoron and I agree....there really is NO good delivery pizza, you have to eat it fresh
crap pizza...well it's crap so they can over heat it and use ingredients that can make a 30 min drive
but in good news Yada, you don't have to come to arlington

Continental Pizza crushing the game in MoCo

If the world returns to normal . . . come to Front Royal, VA . . . and go to Melting Pot pizza, or have it delivered if you are staying in a airb,b for your outdoor adventure weekend.

Fondue pizza? I'm all in!

Do they serve ice cold soda pop there?
-
And beer drinking, with a straw.
-
P.S.A./RANT: if you are ordering delivery or pick-up, avoid using Grubhub, Uber Eats, or any other similar food delivery service - call the restaurant/bar/brewery/etc. directly.
food delivery apps take a big chuck of the money from restaurant. dunno about other folks, but i'm voting with my wallet and supporting local establishments that i want to make through the pandemic, so i don't want the profits from my order being funneled to VCs in silicon valley.
-
Absolutely
-
Fully support that method via pick up, but delivery that's not really possible.
For example, I'm not driving to Rockville for a gyro but would definitely get it delivered. Something is better than nothing, no?

Wow. The pizzas I’ve ordered have been pretty underwhelming. Clearly I’m doing it wrong.

My tips...
Always get the large, which is square.
Get it well done.

give the store/restaurant a call, they may have their own delivery person. or they might tell you that service X is better (more profitable) than service Y.

These guys are delivering their frozen pizzas all over the area now: https://www.bricknfirepizzacompany.com/
Placed an order yesterday. We'll see.

in our quest to widen our choices in carry out\delivery we found a place in Laurel called Bella Indian Italian, who as one suspects has both Indian and Italian menus. Now where the pizza part comes in is they do a fusion pizza where instead of traditional pizza toppings they do Indian. i.e. an Butter Chicken or Palak Paneer Pizza. All the Chef Inspired Pizza's we have tried have been delicious! Haven't really gotten anything from the straight Indian or Italian menus from them, but it seems those items are pretty average.
It's located right across from the Laurel Hospital, so if your near that part of the world it's worth the try.

There is a place here that is very similar called Chicago’s Pizza... With A Twist. The twist is all the pizza toppings are Indian. They do not make a Chicago style pizza. It is a terrible name.

I love trattoria here in Columbia. So so good.

working on making my first Sourdough Pizza dough tonight!
been using the store bough dough and cast iron skillet to excellent results so far
Let's be clear, this doesn't even remotely save time, money (we go with buffalo mozzarella)or doing dishes...but there is a sense of accomplishment that is achieved...oh and it tastes pretty damn good

Fun must be in short supply

Yada likes jam bands, Pittsburg, Long and Foster, and Domino's Pizza. I offer this summation without comment.

I will say, I've never had a burnt pizza from Dominos and I always order well done.

MoCo pizza dwellers...
Andy's Pizza officially open in Bethesda
Wiseguy's Pizza officially open in The Wheaton Mall (where restaurants go to die). Really wish they would've found a different brick and mortar spot. Hopefully they survive.
