Title: Dandy Warhols Presale info
Post by: kosmo vinyl on July 18, 2003, 09:23:00 am
The Dandy Warhols are pleased to announce fan ticketing for their upcoming Fall American tour, which kicks off on August 26 in San Francisco, CA. You can buy tickets to select Dandy Warhols shows through www.dandywarhols.com (http://www.dandywarhols.com) and this web page: www.dandywarhols.musictoday.com (http://www.dandywarhols.musictoday.com)

Dandy Warhols tickets will be available on Friday, July 18 at noon, before they go on sale to the general public. You'll need to register to receive your universal username and password to receive tickets.

Dandy Warhols Direct Ticketing allows you to buy tickets online, directly from the artist, for upcoming shows, in an effort to reduce high surcharges from other online ticket vendors, and to offer a more convenient ticketing option.

Please check the web site for updated information on fan pre-sales and general public onsales.

This is how dandywarhols.com announced it -

Man, I hate it when a show is sold out because some Fred Durst looking motherfucker and a gang of his fag-bashing, baggy pants and backwards baseball cap wearing cronies, who have no life to live, get in line in front of you at Tower or GI Joes or wherever and buy up all the god damned tickets for a show you're desperate to see. These are the guys who have only heard 'Junkie' once, and constantly scream for Zia to take off her top. Well, hey, this time, we want to make sure the gigs are packed with cool people. That's why we're making tickets to our US tour available online to Warhols fans before they go on sale anywhere else. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 18th at Noon Eastern/9am Pacific. See ENGAGEMENTS for the dates, and HERE for the hookup. Nice one.

I remember I snagged a rare studio cover of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" off their website a couple of months ago.  I wonder if they still have it?  It's almost good for all 8 minutes.

 Public Service Announcement

Hey, we should have done this before we set out on the touring season, but hey, what can you do. We wanted to let everyone know that owing to our near three hour onstage sets, we are no longer touring with support acts. So, kids, when your ticket says "An Evening with the Dandy Warhols" and starts at 9pm, you had better get there at that time an expect to rock. That is all.

Thought they were rather underwhelming on Conan Friday (resheduled from Thurs) but still looking forward to them at Bumbershoot.

No.  They just provide an "enhancement."  Especially when they kick into the 52 minute version of Fast Driving Rave Up.

Just saw this from a regular board member of the BJM list:                                                                                                     Saw the Dandys last night. They sounded great. It was all about the music,
and they played for 2 1/2 hours. Heard old gems like Nothing, Genius, Lou
Weed, Ride.....gotta give them lots of credit when credits due....

90% of their audience was underage, and the beer section was sectioned off at the back. "Another cold on" wouldn't have applied to most of their audience.
There was plenty of time between them and the previous act (45 mins) so that they should have had the sound right.
Making people stand there in a crowded room for 45-90 mins so you can get the sound just right seems a bit self-indulgent. None of the other acts that had performed there that day had delayed their performance, and the sound sucked when they were playing.

Thanks, but I think they're one of those bands that I would just enjoy hearing the single on the radio from time to time. Seems like they like to do extended versions of their songs, and I'm more of a 4 minute pop song lover myself...

It's always possible that they got into town late and didn't have the advantage of an earlier sound check. Don't really know. Sorry you got stuck with a bad one. I'm looking forward to their show next week.

OK,but if you change your mind, the offer is still open.Did anyone catch Mister Johnny Rotten on Jimmy Kimmel the other nite?Mister Johnny Rotten,he's so funny!Wonder how long it took him to come up with that.Jimmy rippin off his shirt as he introduced them was hilarious IMHO.And Mr. T. as co-host no less.I pity the fool.

Actually, I saw the chick and the drummer hanging out at the festival, walking around to various foodstands. It's more likely they got high, got the munchies, and didn't show up for the soundcheck when they were supposed to.

LOLOLOL. I had wondered about that too but didn't bother to mention it. You may be right. You'd think by now that they would have that part down. Oh, well. Some heads never learn!

Another blurb from a BJM board member regarding  the Minnesota show.Good to see Courtney seemingly over his spat with Anton for the time being:                                                                                                So I went and saw the Dandy's finally after missing them the last
few times they've been through Minnesota.  They played what I
believe was their first show at First Ave here in Minneapolis.  To
my surprise the show looked close to sold out, and after missing
about 20min of the beginning of their set I struggled through the
crowd to find a suitable place to stand. I was actually pretty
impressed with how good the show turned out to be.  A pretty broad
set-list was played with a pretty noticeable lack of songs off the
new album (imo). One of the funniest moments occurred when a young
woman was pulled up out of the crowd to get spankings from Zia
during what I believe was White Gold. When Zia finished Courtney
handed the girl the mic to say a few words.  The girl seemed pretty
drunk but screamed out one question.  "Hey! Do you know Anton?!"
This question totally took me by surprise due to the fact that she
didn't know the dandy's at all, and well, what an odd question to
ask in front of an almost full First Avenue crowd?  Courtney
meanwhile, simply turns his head, looks at the crowd and
mutters.."Doesnt everyone know Anton?.." In a slow, low pitch,
cooler than cool rockstar kinda way.  The crowd erupts into laughter
and the band breaks into what I think was We Used to Be Friends.

I liked the other covers (Hell's Bells, Ohio) better than Edmund Fitzgerald.  They also did The Nuge's "Free for All" which was kind of weird.

Oh come on! You can't tell me that $16 for a pint of Boddies and pint of flat Guiness is not out of order in a shit hole like Polly's.

Especially with the lousy 'tude of the bar wench and the old witch of a waitress that barges her way past everyone so you spill your $16 boddies and flat guinness!

They must have mischarged you. The beers are around $5 a pint. Not $8. It was odd the other time because the evil waitress was nice to us. I did get "shushed" by the miserable barman though, YAY!!!!

And they don't have the overhead that clubs have such as extra electricty charges and entertainment taxes.

they have a juke box, that means they have to pay entertainment tax. and the last time I was there, they had electric lights and I didnt have to wind the juke box up.

It seems pretty common in DC for a beer to be $5

Honestly don't know how the tax laws work regarding juke boxes vs live entertainment but knowing the whores called politicians, I wouldn't be surprised if they do tax juke boxes. What's the verdict Josh?

As far as electricty, I'd much rather have to pay the bill for Polly's than the 9:30 Club or the Black Cat.

CAPACITY for 9:30 club: 1000
 capacity for black cat:500?
 capacity for polly's:50?

of course the electricity bill is going to be more at the 9:30. and with 20 times as many people drinking, they're going to be able to rake in a few more beer dollars.

sure but they hold a lot more people. I imagine the per head electric bill would not be dissimilar, except for pollys not having air conditioning.

$5-6 in for a pint in DC is acceptable to me, even $7 if it's in a nice place with pleasant staff, but to get robbed and made to feel like you're a nuisance to them (like the 930 backbar...sorry, had to get it in one more time!) just pisses me off, there's just too many bars in DC to have to deal with it.

Ah, but you have to remember that the clubs are now all ages, meaning that not all will be drinking. Also, not all of age bother drinking. And a larger business requires a larger staff and probably higher rents, property taxes, upkeep, etc..

My point being that it costs a lot to put on a live electric show which has to be passed onto the consumer, therefore, warranting a bit higher drink cost.

Pollys is on Ust between 14th and 13th. On the right if you go from 14th to to 13th. Not much beer choice. they are 4 minutes walk from 930.

For a bigger beer choice there is the saloon across the road. But the food is less good there and the old letcherous waiter always touches the boys and the girls and gives everyone the creeps.

 I kinda like pollys.

It's an okay place, after all is said and done. Nothing fancy but the food isn't bad.

It's on U St. just the 9:30 Club side of 14th St.. Only several doors down from 14th St.. Look for the black flat sculptures outside the place. If you are going away from the 9:30 Club and towards 14th, it's on the left side of the street.

BASS..it was actually a pint of Bass and flat Guiness for $16, which makes it even more of an insult.

Stay away from the Guiness by the way, just save yourself $6 and drink a quart of oil rather than drink their shit.

I don't have the much-vaunted "Black" album.  I have a collection of mp3s that used to be on their site and appeared on some imports.

The only covers I can recall are the aforementioned (Hell's Bells, Ohio, Wreck of the EF, Free for All) and a couple that I have on a UK import (Eight Days A Week, BJM's Stars)

I know that there are some recordings of Zia doing Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" but I don't know if those are just live boots.

They are pretty good at giving MP3s away of odd recordings of their songs. I have that one of Merceds Benz. You aren't missing anything, believe me! The Edmund Fitzgerald one is okay but not one of my favorites. Hell's Bells is one of the better ones. There are a lot of others, some of which are pretty good such as Black Dog. And there's another of which I can't remember the title of but you can hear that it's the work up of You Were The Last High but jammed out a bit and I don't think it has lyrics yet.

Good thinking Anton, as it gets crowded upstairs sometimes and hard to find others. I too plan to make it downstairs afterwards. Just look and listen for the Brit rocking hipster loons. Just give us time to make it downstairs with possible restroom stops, vendor browsing, crowd weaving and just stalling.

Raise Beer Tax to Reduce Teen Drinking - Report
Tue Sep 9, 6:23 PM ET  Add U.S. National - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress and state legislatures should raise taxes on alcohol, especially beer, to discourage underage drinking, advisers to the government said on Tuesday.

The Institute of Medicine (news - web sites) and the National Research Council (news - web sites) also recommended more careful advertising of alcohol to ensure children do not get bombarded with pro-drinking messages.

"More young people drink alcohol than use other drugs or smoke tobacco, and underage drinking costs the nation an estimated $53 billion annually in losses stemming from traffic fatalities, violent crime, and other behaviors that threaten the well-being of America's youth," the Institute, commissioned by Congress to write the report, said in a statement.

"Alcohol is much cheaper today, after adjusting for inflation, than it was 30 to 40 years ago," the Institute said. "Higher tax rates should be tied to the Consumer Price Index (news - web sites) to keep pace with inflation."

It said many studies had shown that raising prices deters underage drinkers.

CHANGING THE WAY SOCIETY VIEWS DRINKING

The report recommends concerted efforts to change the way society views drinking.

"The Motion Picture Association of America, for instance, should consider content about alcohol use when rating films, and assign mature ratings for movies that portray drinking in a favorable light," the Institute said.

Congress and the Health and Human Services (news - web sites) Department should monitor advertising, movies, television programs, music recordings, and videos that may be seen by teens and children.

"We think it is reasonable to expect the industry to do more than it is now doing," Richard Bonnie, a law professor at the University of Virginia who chaired the committee, told a news conference.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving praised the report,

"Underage drinking is our nation's No. 1 youth drug problem," MADD president Wendy Hamilton said in a statement.

She said drinking killed 6.5 times more children and teens than all illicit drugs combined. "Only $71 million of the federal fiscal year 2000 budget was spent on underage drinking prevention. This mere pittance pales in comparison to the $18 billion spent on the war on drugs," she added.

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said it was already moving to tighten its advertising recommendations, saying drinking-related ads should only go into media with a readership or viewership made up of 70 percent adults or more.

"This is a significant increase and replaces the previous provision that required a 51 percent adult audience," the group said in a statement.

"This is a step in the right direction, but the committee believes that the adult threshold for viewers or listeners should be raised even further," Bonnie said.

The Federal Trade Commission issued a separate report on Tuesday saying the alcohol industry had improved its self-regulation on advertising. "The report also found no evidence of targeting underage consumers in the flavored malt beverage market," the FTC said.

But the Beer Institute said calls for tax increases were misguided. "Experience has shown that the only clear results from increasing beer excise taxes are higher unemployment and higher prices for responsible adults -- such measures do nothing to lower teen drinking," Jeff Becker, President of Beer Institute, said in a statement.

I never thought I'd agree with the President of the Beer Institute, but ahhhh this country is so misguided!  Is the government's concern that teens are drinking, or that teens are getting smashed and then driving cars/hurting themselves or others?  Honestly, who gives a fuck if I drink a beer?  I'm sure as hell not about to drive a car if I'm sloshed.  It seems to me that the real problem here is the drinking AGE...suddenly, rather than go out for a pint or two with some friends, without fear of prosecution, I end up driving to a party in the middle of nowhere which will undoubtably get busted by the cops, at which point at least three or four kids will ALWAYS try to drive away while drunk (no matter what I might try to argue).  If it wasn't illegal, they'd have no reason to go anywhere.  And then you can look at the rates of alchohol-related deaths among teenagers in reasonable countries like, um Canada and all of Europe, and you find much lower rates across the board.  So the idea that making alchohol even more difficult/expensive to come by will prevent dangerous drinking is just ludicrous â?? it makes it that much less appealing to drink casually, and that much more appealing to drink to get drunk.  We should keep the taxes where they are, and lower the drinking age to 18.  Silly Americans.

they normally check the FAQ regularly. But they will probably only get an answer from the band on the day of the show. The same thing goes with photos.

So is this going to be a big board bash?

Why? Why would you even tempt him with this prompt? Do you know sort of response we're all potentially going to be subjected to? You should be ashamed of yourself.
