Title: Cicadas
Post by: mankie on May 12, 2004, 11:23:00 am
Who's got em??

They're up and about in Aspen Hill.

None in the Dulles area....we suspect they're still hiding to avoid 16 years of unpaid obscene property tax bills.  :D

They're nothing to get all worked up about, really. They're very docile and have no interest in humans at all, and don't bite or sting. When they start to fly they do fly into you but that's only because they're dozy, by then you'll be so used to them you'll just pick them off yourself, no problem.

My wife was totally freaking, but has calmed down a bit now she's seen them. Little Rory likes them.....

Exactly. That and a dirty windshield, we're lucky they are so harmless. Their noise just sounds like a loud generator. That might actually be more annoying -- after 17 years, many loud shows my ears have been exposed to, causing some sensitivity.

They started coming out Monday night in Arlington.  I went outside last night and right around 8:30 they started coming out in huge numbers.  I was pretty amazed as to how many were crawling around.  Even watched one pull out of his shell which was kinda neat.

Well, with a bit of luck the whole world will be covered in Tarmac by the next time they're due to come out, so it won't be an issue!

living in a large building isn't exactly my first choice, but whatever. all i really wanted was not to spend 2.5 hours a day in the car. there was some internet discussion group that was obsessed with turning the earth into a big ball of concrete. funny stuff

Just saw about 20+ last night on the sidewalk in front of my apartment in Arlington. They were all molting and then falling onto the ground on their backs. Look around for them on railings at night.

oh calm down ya big whimp! It's only a plague of locusts of biblical proportions?

If you have screens you can keep you windows open...they can hardly get through screens, although the noise of them trying to get laid gets loud.

i mean car windows. oops. i don't want to have to dodge cicadas while trying to get through traffic in the mornings!   :D

overall, i'm just not a big fan of the weird exoskeleton molting, wing flapping, sensory lacking disgusting bug stuff.

this all seems incredibly overhyped to me.  I haven't seen any yet.  my mother claims everyone's retarded making something out of nothing...and she's a big time complainer about that shit.  she was pregnant with me the last time they woke up.

anybody know where to find the cicada recipes?  I'm very interested in Fried Cicadas or some other kind of delicacy.  might as well, eh?

A cicada recipe, courtesy of West Virginia's University Alumni Magazine.
"Cicadas are a delicacy in the city of Shanghai, China, where this creative
 recipe originated."

Ingredients: cicadas, anise, salt, rice wine, mashed garlic, celery, turnip
 greens.

 Recipe:

 1. Boil the cicadas and anise in salted rice wine for five minutes, and then
 remove the cicadas.

 2. Sauté the mashed garlic, adding water and rice wine to make a paste.
 3. Deep-fry the cicadas, and then skewer them with bamboo picks. Arrange
them on a plate with the turnip greens, celery, and garlic paste to look
like the cicadas are climbing out of a mud pie onto green foliage.

Look for them hanging out on plant leaves.  That's where I saw a ton of them this morning in my yard.  Most not even out of their shells yet.

COPS VS. CICADAS ...

"You're not a cop, are you?" Oh, if only we had a nickel for each time we have uttered that phrase! But it's a useful question to ask. And with Cop Week (http://www.nleomf.com/NatPolWeek/schedule04.html) upon us, it becomes especially useful, since it is often difficult to tell cops from regular revelers at the local watering holes. Throw the friendly cicada into the mix, and things become even more difficult.

That's right: The cops AND the cicadas are a-comin', ready to swarm all over the greater DC area and claim it as their own! Don't worry. They'll both leave you alone if you don't bother them.

Don't know what a cicada is? Check out this link (http://abbot.si.edu/highlight/cicadas/faq.htm) for more information.

Still not sure what a cicada is? Still afraid you will confuse the harmless cicada with the friendly cop at Cop Week? Fear not! Ghost Man is here with ...

How to Tell the Difference Between Cops and Cicadas:

 - A cicada will never buy your girlfriend a beer.
 - A cicada will never offer you 20 bucks for your panties.
 - The women on your team will never abandon you to talk to a cicada.
 - If it wears a suggestive T-shirt, it is not a cicada.
 - If it has a mustache, it is not a cicada.
 - If it sings loudly and out of tune, it might be a cicada.
 - One clings to your leg and stares up at you with spooky red eyes. The other is an insect with a 17-year life cycle.
 - If it accidentally becomes entangled in your hair and you shriek madly and flail about until it releases and falls on the floor with a splat, it might not be a cicada.
 - A cop will never lay its eggs in a tree.
 - If it talks about how much it detests paperwork, pervs, and perps, it's a cop.
 - If it calls loudly in search of a mate, it is a cop.
 - If it molts beforehand, it is a cicada.

Haven't seen or heard a one yet up here near Loch Raven Reservoir. I remember last Summer seeing the odd early cicada in either DC or Virginia. However, the birds have been extremely noisey. Woke me up this morning screaming in my window.

Between where I live and where I work (about a mile away) there has just been a lot of new mansions (no, I don't live in one) and new institutional buildings put up in the past several months. All I can think of now is that those poor cicadas waited a whole 17 years to come up and mate only to miss their time by a few freaking months!

So, I was happily gardening at 5pm on Saturday, no cicadas in sight.  then, at 9pm, when I was headed out to see MoB, I saw them squirming around on the ground, out of their holes.  They leave big holes behind-- about the size of a dime.  Now they're all over.
