As more of a lurker than a participant, must one have a minimum number of posts to qualify?  I'd contribute more but Rhett hurts my feelings.

What are the chances Smackette lets me cancel our vacation get away so I can go play Halo with the boys of the 930?

I'm not even going to try this, although this is potentially more exciting than any of the bachelor parties I've been to this summer.

Can we bring a guest (to make out with after we get drunk, cut in front of the crowd, sing along too loud, possibly remove our shirts, and shout out our enlightened requests of "freebird")?

Being insulted by Rhett is the act that grants one "Forum Member" status.

 Congratulations.

Is that direct person to person insults, or does that also include indirect, roundabout, and often even unintentional insults?

At current rates, three roundabout insults is the equivalent to two indirect insults, and both are equal to one direct, person-to-person insult.

I believe all your insults are intentional.

if i win the tickets, i'll be there.
otherwise i'll just enjoy my mogwai shows and my memories of 3hour cure shows with actual decent setlists.

i still think that with mogwai's 30minute set, one of the days at curiosa they should just play MFMK and only that.

ah well. .at least i get to see them in pittsburgh and buffalo.

maybe someday the cure will bring the trilogy shows to this continent.

Early returns show pretty good reviews on the festival (The Cure site did not provide links for these):

 from the Orlando Sentinel:

When the Cure finally performed, after a precisely timed procession of opening acts spread over almost four hours, singer Robert Smith showed that the band isn't ready to rest on its laurels. Music from the Cure's new self-titled album sounded as strong as anything the group has ever done.

Smith opened with the album's first song, "Lost," which showcased his evocative voice at its brooding best. "I can't find myself in the head of a stranger in love," he wailed, as banks of blue spotlights formed an appropriately moody background.

The band followed with "Labyrinth," re-creating the album's pensive, rhythmically charged arrangement with almost studio clarity. The sound mix at the amphitheater was hospitable to the band's dense sonic assault even though Smith's vocals occasionally sounded harsh when he sang in the upper register above the full band.

Although the band's generous set, which ran more than 100 minutes, was loaded with new material, Smith dipped into the Cure's catalog too. Often, the older songs dovetailed perfectly, such as a beautiful version of "Love Song" that sounded more inspired than the obligatory hit it has become.

It was one of several songs from 1989's Disintegration album that the band revisited with considerable skill. The crowd, which came close to filling the amphitheater, offered a hearty roar for "Fascination Street," which lightened the show's opening moments with a dose of dance-friendly psychedelia. Later, "Pictures of You" unfolded as a gorgeous theatrical ballad.

 And, from the Tampa Tribune:

A powerful set by The Cure capped off a long day of dark-hued rock 'n' roll, much of it inspired by the headliners, at the Ford Amphitheatre on Sunday.

Dubbed Curiosa, the two- stage, festival-style tour was designed by Cure leader Robert Smith to showcase some of his favorite young bands, as well as allow those bands to pay homage to the headline act, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It drew a crowd estimated at 10,000.

The Cure's influence, though, was evident in much of the music of the seven bands whose sets preceded group.

It could be heard in the yelping vocals of The Rapture, in the clipped rhythms of Interpol and in the naked emotion of Thursday.

It would take quite a stretch of the imagination, though, to hear The Cure's influence in the music of Head Automatica, which opened the show on the second stage at 5 p.m., with an energetic set of wiseacre punk.

Scottish outfit Mogwai played next on the main stage. The instrumental group's music has an awful majesty, threatening to carry the listener away in a swarm of funnel- cloud guitars. The calm ferocity of the set reach a climax with a seven-minute barrage of guitar feedback.

Over on the second stage, Cooper Temple Clause substituted aggression for the atmospherics of its ``Kick Up the Fire, and Let the Flames Break Loose'' CD, with mixed results.

Second main stage act The Rapture almost was swallowed whole by its influences - U2 and The Cure - early in its set. However, the band emerged with something close to its own, beginning with the song ``The Coming of Spring.''

Melissa Auf Der Maur looked striking and mysterious while manning the bass for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins in years past. Fronting her band, Auf Der Maur, on the second stage, she ruined her mystique by opening her mouth and revealing a thin, nasally voice that sank her otherwise adequate alt-rock.

Interpol was a stylish blend of restrained emotion and channeled drive on the main stage. Daniel Kessler's vocals recalled Joy Division's Ian Curtis, but with a chilly reserve more in line with Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry.

Thursday's pummeling heartfelt punk might have been more at home on the punk-heavy Warped Tour, but it drew plenty of attention as the final band on the second stage.

The Cure moved gracefully between earlier material and songs from its latest album, ``The Cure.''

``Pictures of You'' had many in the crowd swaying, and a few weeping. ``On a Night Like This'' was bracing, near-perfect pop.

The new material, though, was of equal quality, from ``Lost,'' to the infectious ``End of the World.''

 ******************************

Wish I could make the gathering, but I'll be catching the Wed show in Cleveland.

 DJ Wren
 Snailhook
 Brennser
 SalParadise

I'll be there and I'm very much looking forward to the whole day and night! Took the whole day off from work. Only way to do it right to take advantage of the day, get there in time and not be burnt to a crisp by nightfall and the drive back home. So glad that I didn't take a whole week's vacation time in July as I had originally planned to do. Things seem to be shaping up nicely all the way around.

Actually, the prospect of meeting people from this board is actually much more enticing (in an amusing way) than seeing any of the bands that are playing.

I'm actually quite envious about the happenings. Sounds like it could be a great time.

I saw the show last night in Cleveland and here's a few thoughts.

Get there early and find a schedule...somewhere - anywhere. It was like trying to secure top-secret info. And they change the order on the second stage for every show so by the time I arrived @ about 6:00 I had already missed CTC & Mogwai. I was not happy. The second stage @ Blossom was set up in an outside parking lot which was not an insignificant distance from the main stage (where we had pit tix). With the bands on the second stage only playing 30 minutes - it quickly became apparent that it was not going to be reasonable to try to catch every band. So we just hunkered down on the main stage.

The Rapture was much better than expected. I can't take much of them on record, but actually enjoyed them live. Much more rock. Guitars, percussion, sax - with very little keyboard.

It was the second time I had seen Interpol & really couldn't believe it was the same band - they were so much better this time. Maybe it was the sound & mix @ Blossom, but there was so much power to their set.  A perfect mix of bass in your chest - clear guitars and vocals & a cool light show. If only it had been dark out. Some of the new songs sounded very good in the set, especially Narc.

I really wanted to see Muse between Interpol & Cure, but no way we were leaving the pit - running over - catch 10 minutes - running back & fighting for our spot again.

Not sure what to say about the Cure. I had convinced a few friends to go [that really weren't fans] based on the setlist I had seen @ Coachella - which was very 'user-friendly'. Very early in their set R. Smith said "We're playing some different songs tonight"..."I'm feeling sad". Truly a harbinger of things to come.

 Here's the setlist:
Lost, Shake Dog Shake, Before Three, High, The End of the World, Anniversary, Lovesong, Pictures of You, Siamese Twins, Maybe Someday, Like Cockatoos, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Strange Day, One Hundred Years, Never, The Promise

Encore: The Drowning Man, Charlotte Sometimes, Faith.

It's getting rave reviews on  chain of flowers (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ChainofFlowers/)

My friends did not enjoy. I was loving it. But you know what happens when you're with someone who's not diggin' it - it brings you down a bit. My only complaint was that along with the great older songs - they leaned too heavily on the latest record, which I think is really pretty mediocre, especially when played alongside some classics. The songs they didn't play could make up an entire greatest hits collection (In Between Days, Just Like Heaven, Fascination Street, etc.)

Faith was AMAZING. As was Charlotte Sometimes, and Like Cockatoos. Overall, a nice vibe for a Cure show on a cool rainy summer evening. Should you really ever leave a Cure show feeling happy anyway?      :D

That's encouraging.  I don't have a problem with dance music. I just like my dance music to rock-out a little.  I think that's why I don't like the record so much.  Maybe I'll give them another chance.  Thanks for the review.

if anyone has any extra tickets that they CANNOT get rid of at any cost.  bring them in with you.  My sister and her husband are coming late without tickets.  (like 7:30) they were going to just buy box office or try to find some cheap scalpers but if we can help each other out, that would be cool. (presuming i can go the gate and hand a ticket over) I'll be there by 6, brinking at the 932  ;)

If you saw them at Coachella, you would have gotten ALL the big hits..."A Night Like This", "Push", "Inbetween Days", "Fascination Street", "Lullaby", "Lovesong", "Just Like Heaven", "Lovecats", "Boys Don't Cry", etc. It was pretty much everything you'd want to hear. I think on this tour they are catering a bit more to the die-hard fans because the setlist changes every night. Personally, I am waiting to hear "Shake Dog Shake", a personal favorite.

I'll repeat what I wrote earlier...anyone going to park in the Sears lot? Ever had any problems parking there? Just curious...thanks  :)

All depends on what you like I guess. 'Die-hard long time' fans were digging it. The older more obscure stuff was actually great. 1/3 of the set comprised of new stuff that more than likely will not stand the test of time though was a mistake in my opinion. It hurt the flow. I really dislike when bands do this - even though I do realize the reasons for doing so.

They released a ton of great seats earlier this week - including tickets in the pit.  I got a great seat down front just yesterday, which is why I'm trying to sell my previous ticket (which isn't exactly a bad seat either).

haven't heard a line-up...

but i do know where 932 is!

932 is on the right side of the pavallion when you are facing it.  When you come in Merriweather you go through one set of booths and end up at the left side of pavallion.  Continue around the pavallion towards the little whie barn on the hill.  932 is located on the going away from the pavallion.  There is a 932 banner hanging outside the venue.  Or just folllow the cool music.

Parking's free, in the price of the ticket.
The Sears lot is over behind MPP and a lot of folks think it's easier, will be less of a hassle, so they park over there.  I don't know where it is or how to get to it...

It's the mall parking lot for Columbia Mall.  It's easy enough to find, as it's directly across from Merriweather.  In fact, here is a map:
   <img src="http://www.themallincolumbia.com/NR/rdonlyres/4F3797CA-2231-4B2C-AF72-962DE017B301/0/drivingmap.gif" alt=" - " />

And here are the directions, in case anyone is so inclined:  CLICK (http://www.themallincolumbia.com/Info/GettingHere/)

Just drive around to where you see the Sears, park there, and follow everyone else across the Highway.  They usually have cops there to make sure no one gets hit.

Many thanks to Kosmo for his organizational efforts.

We didn't get there until well after 6:00, but had a good time.  The Rapture and Interpol were both very good.  We left before the Cure was finished.

Kudos to Seth.  The sound on the lawn was top notch and the screen was clear enough to see glimpses of glistening spittle in Paul Banks' mouth.

Nice to meet some new people and good to see some old ones (albeit briefly).

I wish we could have gotten to the show in time to catch Kosmo's set and Brennserforce #1.

 I'm off to vacation now.

Nah, you bumbs don't count. Great night out at merriweather. An early Friday night from a drinking aspect, but hey, i still had to drive my car home fomr its parking spot. Awesome time, good seeing lots of folks, though many of you I barely talked to. Sonick and Guiny finally met and bonded as we all expected. But also were a great bunch to hang with.

Muse were awesome, but the Cure played barely anything recognizable for the avg. fan save for the encores. That kinda sucked. Interpol were kinda boring, as were the Rapture. Mogwai was cool if not loud.

Thanks to Seth (though we never saw him) and kosmo and all the rest. You guys rock. Until the holiday get together....

I was in the pit about 10 feet from Robert Smith, so all I can really say is that I had an absolutely fantastic view and I was around a group of people that made the show VERY fun. I thought the setlist was great, of course there are a few songs I would have liked to hear, but I got to hear "A Night Like This", "Push", "Disintegration", "the Walk", and a TON of other great tunes. Not only that, but it seemed like they were really enjoying themselves (yeah, considering it's the Cure after all). I'm sure if I had been further back it might not have been as enjoyable, but they sounded great and I am so glad I went.

The only other band I caught (since I was busy socializing and checking out 932) was Interpol. I thought they were absolutely fantastic as well. I got the setlist, which I will post later. It's time for bed now!
Title: Re: 9:30 Forum Gathering at Curiosa
Post by: helicon1 on August 07, 2004, 07:04:00 am
My friends and I arrived at Merriweather at about 5:35p as Mogwai were playing on the stage. It was heartbreaking to have to hear "Helicon 1" from the parking lot, but that was our own faults  :)  First off, thumbs up to the new and improved Merriweather Post Pavilion. The new sculptures, 932, ample food selection, knowledgable staff and all the other little improvements made for a fun evening (much like the actual 930 club). Also, thumbs up to the Curiosa organizers! While I would have loved to see longer sets from all the artists, they really kept it right on schedule with very minimal wait times between bands.

Now onto the music... I really felt Muse stole the show. I knew those guys were geniuses but finally seeing them in person just reaffirmed what I had known. Bellamy is a virtuoso on the guitar, piano, vocals, whatever.... The atmosphere at the 2nd stage was amazing. The sun had set, the crowd was excited, everyone dancing and Muse made the most of their 30 minute allotment.

It was great to finally get to see the Cure live, but thought they sounded flat for most of the show. I don'tknow what it was, maybe our positions in the pavilion but I never really got into it. It felt like Robert and the boys were just going through the motions trying to make the 11pm curfew.

My favs sets in order: Muse, Interpol, Mogwai, the Cure and the Cooper Temple Clause..... (I had to miss Auf der Maur because I had a situation with my car driving in and was meeting roadside assistance in the parking lot), but she sounded good from the lot.

So hats off to the Merriweather Post Pavilion, Seth and crew and Curiosa for bringing us a fun evening. DOWN WITH NISSAN!  :)

wow.. THANK YOU for the tickets, kosmo (or whoever was running the contest). the show last night was amazing! my friend and i got there right as the gates opened. what a nice day to be at merriweather. mogwai were good, very loud.. am i the only one who thought the rapture were fantastic? interpol was amazing as well, my friend and i got up and were shaking our asses to them... muse was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, i couldn't believe how many people actually knew who they were and were singing along. and the cure... well, the cure songs i know are pretty much only the hits so the encore was absolutely amazing for me. i didn't think they ever played "friday i'm in love" anymore, so that was nice to hear. robert smith forgetting the words was amusing as well. if the traffic on I-95 had been gone when i was on my way home, it would have been a perfect evening.

just wanted to show my appreciation for the tix. thank you again!

Many thanks to Seth for the behind-the-scenes hospitality and to Kosmo for a terrific job as ringmaster at 9:32.  It was a pleasure putting faces to so many names and getting a chance to talk to the real people instead of the board-persona masks.  The former are much warmer, as expected.

This was the first time I had been to MPP under the IMP regime.  It's definitely an improved venue, most importantly with respect to the sound.  All my industry contacts are telling me this has been one of the worst summers on record (from a financial standpoint) for the concert business.  There seems to be much uncertainty about the development plans for the larger parcel in which MPP is located, a possible Howard County buyout of the facility, etc.  Let's hope that stuff doesn't get in the way of IMP having an extended chance to show what they can do.

As far as the music last night, maybe I'm just an old fart but I thought the Cure (who are still at the top of their game IMHO) were leagues better than any of the up-and-coming bands they were showcasing with Curiosa.  Some of the openers were okay (at least better than crappy formula radio music), but I didn't hear anything else that I'm gonna be reminiscing "I saw them when..." in the activity room at the retirement home in a few years....

many, many thanks to seth for such a fantastic night, too bad i didn't get the chance to thank you personally.
Also a job well done by kosmo, nice one.

what a great venue merriweather is........i was kind of surprised by it too be honest, not at all what i was expecting.  the screens were excellent and well positioned, and the sound quality was super sweet. i loved the 932 bar nice touch a real home away from home.

i really enjoyed interpol's set.... and the cure certainly proved the oldies are the goodies.

very nice to meet up with the old boardies and always nice to meet the new ones too.

Add my kudos and thanks to everyone who setup that shindig.  Sorry I didn't get to meet Seth.  Many thanks to kosmo for being the host of the party.
And of course it was great to see everyone - old and new.  Had a terrific time.

I thought all the bands I saw were great, but I thought The Cure blew them all away.  Not the setlist I would have chosen, but still a really good show.

 Next party at Sonic Youth?

Alright, I FINALLY made it home from the damn concert, 24 hours after i got there. (no i didnt sleep in the parking lot)

The show was just great, it was a very fun night, more so than i thought it would be. Lemme sat one thing.

Muse owns all of you.  they are simply unreal, and to think , they headlined Glastonbury (over Morissey) and then played for 200 people is just crazy!!

The Cure was very very good, i was kinda just talking in the back of the lawn, but they are good background music! I liked that they played Lovesong, and Plainsong, but the rest i didnt really recognize so much, but i still enjoyed and i bet if i was a die hard i may have been in heaven.

Interpol was very good, they are here to stay i think.   Cooper Temple Clause....i dont know...i like em , but eh, wasnt feeling them at all

The 932 is awesome, i wish there were more merriweather shows i wanted to go to! I'd like to hang out there more.  It was good to meet some more boardies, though, i only met a handful (where ggw and kurosawa were i dont know cause i was lookng for them)
Guiny is my long lost brother i found out, and redsock is trying to get in my pants....
ok, so maybe i had a lot to drink last night.

thanks to Kosmo to for everything, what a guy, and he realy wore a kilt!! i thought you were kidding.

anyway, lets do it again sometime!

Words could never say what a fantastic day yesterday was! So many good things about the day from the weather, to the bands, the venue, the DJs, the old and new friends, the total atmosphere and more. Lots more!

The sound was incredible! Especially for an outdoor pavilion. Seth, you've outdone even your very own self with what you've done with Merriweather. Columbia owes you a big dept of gratitude and if they refuse to recognize that, they are even bigger fools than Baltimore Shitty. It doesn't even seem like the same place at all. Anyone who now questions attending a Merriweather concert because of sound issues doesn't know squat about what has happened with the extensive high quality renovations. I even love the giant cicada on the tree.

Thank you ever so much Seth for thinking of us and putting on the best party ever!!! Sorry you missed out.    :(    Well, hopefully you were there...somewhere.

Kosmo, thanks for organizing, supervising and DJing! Great job!

To all the DJs, you all did a fantastic job and caused me to miss a few bands. That's okay because I left thoroughly happy and fulfilled.

Sorry I didn't get to meet all of you who were there and couldn't spend even more time with those whom I did get to see.

Pollard, Thirsty, Mankie, Smackie and others, you were missed.

thank you....

....seth for pulling this together and not only allowing us abuse your bandwith but also organizing our forum get together at 9.32 - you are a class act

....kosmo and kosmette for the ride to Merriweather, and to kosmo for his DJing tutelage

....lulu and sonick for shattering 'wee markies' illusion that he was taller than me   :p

 ....salparadise for playing happy mondays

 ....stereofaith for playing the libertines

....medusa and strange for playing lloyd cole

....the awesome 9.32 staph for looking after us the whole night

great seeing the folks I already knew - great finally putting some faces to screen names, chimbly, dandy, samantha, liberte, sonick etc

I was very impressed with the whole MPP set up - sound was amazing - I only saw TCTC and The Cure - I'm not a Cure fan but I thought they were excellent

Greetings all -

I can only echo the sentiments of the other boardies and say that it was indeed a truly wonderful evening.

It was *fantastic* and such a treat getting the opportunity to spin at 9:32 - thank you so much, Kosmo!   :)

Meeting other people from this board was also tons of fun - great to meet people in person and have the chance to chat.

I hope that those of you who were inside 9:32 when we were spinning liked what we played.   :)

Our setlist is up on our web site - here is the direct link:  http://www.medusapromotions.com/curiosaaug6.htm (http://www.medusapromotions.com/curiosaaug6.htm)

My thoughts on Merriweather are that it is 100% better than the last time I was there (4 years ago, coincidentally also to see The Cure).  I love the sculptures, the access to all of the food/beverage stands (they are all over the place) and also having two t-shirt/merchandise booths.  The sound was great, and those TV screens were really cool.  Whoever did the lighting for The Cure also should be commended.  Amazing.

I admit I had tears in my eyes when The Cure were playing - I always do, even though I've seen them multiple times now.  Complete highlights of their set were: The Figurehead, Push, Closedown, 100 Years and A Strange Day.  I didn't see any of the other bands - I was inside 9:32 until The Cure went on.

To wrap up: Thanks so much to everyone who organized things inside/for 9:32, and of course for the drinks, the fun and comraderie.  I'm excited for more parties/meets like this!   :)

P.S.  And could we have asked for better weather?!  Absolutely *glorious*!  I am glad I brought my 2 sweaters though.  ;)

 Cheers

 DJ Medusa.

I'm actually really sorry I didn't get to meet everyone, but it might have been a bit loud of a setting to talk, anyway

perhaps we should have a gathering downstairs at a Magnetic Fields show

small world...turns out a friend of mine is good friends w/ a boardie, who happened to be my ride. so helicon1, thanks again, and i hope your car is doing better.

just wanted to give a big thanks to kosmo for putting this together and for the chance to share some of my favorite tunes with the 932 people. i ducked out soon after finishing playing to catch the rapture, but for the forum people i did speak with (stereofaith, brennser, kosmo/kosmette, kurosawa), it was definitely cool meeting you.

kosmo, send kosmette my apologies for being such a drink-ticket hound! (aka alcoholic?)

 until next time...

Magnetic Fields would probably be good.    ;)

You know, one thing I had noticed but hadn't noted here is that though the sound (at least on the lawn) was nice and loud and clear, it was still easy to talk without major hearing problems. A very good balance. Not as easy inside the 9:32 Club though but still possible. We all sure did enough of it!

Sal, so close yet so far away. Sorry that we didn't get to meet. Hope so next time.

Everyone has pretty much voiced my thoughts. It was a great outing. Merriweather is vastly improved...the sound, the layout, the intimacy (surprisingly enough). It was a perfect event to showcase the venue to all of us because the Curiosa bands are greatly accentuated by pristine sound. And it was an especially fun night because I kept running into so many friends -and meeting new ones! Thanks to Kosmo and Seth for a lovely 9:32 gathering. I wish I could have stayed longer, but I didn't want to miss some of the bands. So nice to meet salparadise, chimbley sweep, and liberte for the first time. (Sonickteam2, I saw you but then had to leave for Interpol.) And great to catch up with my other forum friends. I look forward to the next event/gathering/concert!
For me, the highlight of the night was (and this will not surprise anyone) -Interpol. Those new songs are incredible. I cannot wait for their tour this Fall.

Well I'm back from enjoying the fab weather in south Cental PA and it's time to add my thank you's etc. Feeling a but like having just won an award and hoping that I don't forget anyone in my thanks yous.

First off a huge thanks to the 9:30 and IMP family for giving us the opportunity to gather at 932 as part of the Curiosia festival.  Seth, Eddie, Chad and his staff, Shadrach, and the 932 bar staff.  Especially, the bar staff who were facing an already swamped bar with added forum crazy's.  It was nice to finally meet Seth, looking forward to a less hectic event to gather at it.

Secondly, thanks to all the DJs who took the time to go up to show and DJ.  Brennser, SalParadise, Stereofaith, DJ Strange and DJ Medusa.  It was great getting to hear what everyone choices were with loads of variety and all very cool.  My only worry is the more people who get a chance to DJ will only result in me being forced into retirement.

Thirdly, Thanks to all the forumites who got out to the show.  It was great putting a face to a couple more screen names.  Now who wants to get the ball rooming on that Record Store/Bar co-op where we can all go hang out between shows and when the weathers crappy.  Kinda like a cool rec room...

Lastly, and most importantly Thanks to the Cure for playing the party.  Once they were on board everything fell into place.

Well It's Monday morning and It seems like Friday night was just five minutes ago. I have to say I had a lot better time than I thought I would. Merrieweather has improved a billion percent since the last time I was there (either the Depeche Mode show or The Cure show, can't remember which one). The 932 bar was kickin' and it was great to meet Skeeter, Bags, Markie, Lulu and Kosmo for the first time. Medusa, good to see ya again......OH yeah, how could I forget my boyz...Redsock and Sonick, what a great frickin' night huh? I can hang with you guys at a few more shows thats for damn sure!!!!!!!!! As for bands, I thought The Cure played alot better this time then the last two times I've seen them and secondly Sonick was right, Muse put on one hell of a show. I bought the cd and will let you know what I think Sonick. Like I said that night, I think they are more of a live band then a CD band but we shall see. Once again, great meeting everyone for the first and second times and hope we can do it again sometime.

 Peace,

 Rob Gee

P.S. - Sonic Youth is next.

So yeah, a big thanks to Kosmo and Seth for organising and supplying the entertainmment.

I had a great night at my first "big show". I was surprised at enjoying a giant show like that quite so much. The sound was really spot on, I cannot imagine the cure sounding any better than that. The giant TV screens worked well and as said already, whoever was doing the cures light show really knew what they were doing.

It was great hanging out with all the loons and to put some new faces to names. The DJ's were great, well all except that tall guy who just played 80's stuff.

Thanks again, I will probably check out Merriwether again in the future.

The Cure in Concert: Hemlock All Around

 By Dave McKenna
 Special to The Washington Post
 Monday, August 9, 2004; Page C01

For more than a quarter-century the Cure has relied upon a sterile sound. The brooding and durable U.K. band's synth-centric output -- sort of electronica minus much of the melody, or industrial with the subwoofer unplugged -- remains as processed as anything in pop.

Yet to the credit of founder, songwriter and go-to goth crooner Robert Smith, generations of kids in the black-fingernail-polish demographic have found the Cure anything but soulless. At Merriweather Post Pavilion on Friday, Smith flaunted his bleak and black consistencies.

Given that the Cure was the last of several acts to take either of the two stages on the barnstorming tour billed as the Curiosa Festival, Smith would deserve kudos had he merely kept everybody awake. But he never even gave the crowd an excuse to sit down at any point in the headlining quintet's 90-minute set.

And though dancing was kept to a minimum -- other than during a late-in-the-show hits binge of "Friday I'm in Love," "Why Can't I Be You" and "Just Like Heaven" -- at times it appeared as if tryouts for the Olympic emoting team were taking place. When, for example, Smith confessed, "I will always love you!" during the beautiful "Lovesong," his worshipers wailed those words right back at him, all the while making the most dramatic hand and facial gestures possible toward the stage.

And when he moped, "I want to change!" on "A Night Like This," a mopefest broke out from in front of the stage to the back of the amphitheater's lawn. But, really now, who among them really wants change?

"Us or Them," a cut from the Cure's latest CD, stood out from everything else in the set only because of the bottom-heaviness of its backing track -- for a few minutes, it was as if somebody let bassist Simon Gallup plug the subwoofer back in. Yet it remains true that one could more easily find change in a parking meter than in the Cure's songbook. "Boys Don't Cry," a cut off the Cure's breakout LP from 1980, blended beautifully with other tunes on the set list that were written decades later.

Smith's influential look hasn't gone through any extreme makeover over the years, either. On this night his coif was as black and bed-headed as in his vintage poster shots, and he came to the stage in the same Halloween makeup he's always applied to his eyes and lips. A good portion of the crowd, of course, came to the venue similarly coifed and made up.

The plea for change wasn't the night's only dishonest utterance. "Alt.end" found Smith singing that he was going away, a threat he's issued repeatedly over the band's history. "I want this to be the end!" Smith whined. And the fans whined the line right back, with feeling. But chances are good that neither could pass a lie detector test.

I know many of the attendees were diggin' the special Curiosa posters printed up for the event, but at the time didn't want to take them time so as not to get them all grungy.  We'll try to get them in everyone hands at future shows, etc.  Even if I have to carry them around in my DJ bag for the next couple of months.

As far as what I was DJing, it was a bit of Radio Kosmo, De Novo Dahl, Mood Elevator, Myracle Brah, Wire Train, Your Pal, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, with Moev, B-Movie, and Figures on a Beach.  Did anyone catch the Delgados track?

My turn for the praise:  Thanks a ton to Seth and Kosmo for getting this together, and for the Staph for making it a great time.  9:32 is an awesome edition to Merriweather, and the sound and new (since the last time I've been) video monitors were outstanding.  It was great to see those of you I did see.

Thankfully, I made it just in time to see Mogwai (the biggest draw for me), and the Rapture, both of which were outstanding.  Can't wait for more gatherings like this one.

Kosmo,

Wanted to add my own personal thanks for setting this whole thing up! Definitely the best time I ever had at a Cure concert, even better than the time I was in the front row. Good to meet a few people from the board. Hope to see some of you all come to the Blue Room on of these Sundays. You played a great set by the way. Maybe you'd guest DJ with us at the Blue Room some Sunday.

I was very much there.  Thank you Kosmo!  it was lovely seeing you all again.  The Cure were fantastic of course.  Unfortunately we came a bit latish and missed Mogwai, who we very much wanted to see, and came at the end of the Rapture, who we were also a bit interested in.  I don't know why people don't like Rapture, they're so fun and dancy.  Horrible recorded, but oh so fun live.  It's all worth it to watch the dude rock out on the cowbell.  We did see Interpol.  It was just fun walking around looking at all the crazy people, though.  Lots of hotties as well.  But I guess I would have had fun no matter how shitty it was, considering.  But man oh man was the traffic HORRIBLE coming home...blegh!

i agree, the day would have been PERFECT if not for the traffic! took me an hour longer to get home. all i wanted to do was go to bed and i was still on the road at 3am and wanted to throttle something.

This guy (Chris, drummer for  The Fenains (http://www.thefenians.com/) has quite the collection of kilts.  I've seen him wear Zebra stripes, straw, and this lovely green sequin number, which the picture doesn't do much justice:

damn damn damn, wish they would play 9:30

thanks for the video, is awesome [/b]
I've had conversations with their manager before, spoiled by the fact that she outright lied to me about why they weren't playing DC on their last trip through. We could bombard her with e-mails about them playing DC. [/b]
Heh heh.  Or you could all go to sites with a TourVote button and enter your requests for Muse to play live locally....

me and my people left during Friday I'm in Love (10:46pm EST) and we were at a the diner in Laurel at 11:05pm EST.      :D     and i was home (where i was crashing) at 11:30pm!

We left after the first encore and drove to Arlington to get my car, and then back into DC, and I was home by midnight. 1h 15 minutes later. But we were parked right by the exit.

I think I just made a bad guess, where it splits towards Richmond and Silver Springs I usually go towards Richmond but it was backed up, so I went towards Silver Springs and just take GW Parkway. Little did I know about the construction. What a nightmare. Of course my G/F got to sleep the whole time so it didnt bother her none.

kudos to the tip about parking in the sears lot.  we parked there and it offered the following perks:
 1.  drinking in the car before the show (32's of high life in paper bags, no less!)
 2.  making out with my SO in the car before the show (see #1)
 3.  quick walk across the street to the show.
 4.  no waiting to leave the show.
 5.  see #2, repeat after show.
 6.  drive home happy.

I had a friend with me who lives on Cap Hill, so we went some other way...BW parkway to somewhere Hill-ish.  I was home pretty quickly.  Oh, and I did have a designated driver, so no worries if you saw me drinkin' those STRONG bourbon & gingers at 932.   ;)

From CNN.com - an article about how well The Cure's Curiosa Festival is doing.

Nice article. Thanks for the link.

SMITH: You know, I've shaved my head three times in the last twenty years but no one really notices!

I was beginning to think I was the only person who knew this.  The first time I saw The Cure he basically had a crew cut and was wearing a polo-type shirt.  We had quite a laugh over that.

I remember his hair got cut REALLY short for the "Why Can't I Be You?" video as well and my sister freaked over that. He looked good actually, LOL. All in all, I have to say that the Cure are still a band that I enjoy...I've listened to them for 18 years, hard to believe it.

i missed a board gathering, brennser's dj debut, free drinks, seeing people i never have a chance to talk to anymore because the f'n work monster is a tyrannical bastard and doesn't let me post on the board, kosmo's djing, checking out the improvements to mpp (which are clearly faublous if they were up to snuff for you impossible tp please peeople!) meeting new board members, and seeing interpol, mogwai and the cure 10 F'N FEET FROM THE STAGE!

The 45 minute delays on the Beltway towards Richmond were due to the fact that they closed 2 lanes for construction. However, we were right alongside a tour bus most of the time. I give it at least a 75% chance that it was the Cure's bus or else another Curiosa band's. Couldn't see inside it too well but noticed there was a dreamcatcher in the front of the bus. Definitely puts a new perspective on the Cure if it was theirs!

My friends and I were at the Columbia mall getting a bite before the show, and Usher was there, shopping at Lids! Did anyone else see this? He was surrounded by a phalanx of women and security guards.

A singer who will be at the MCI Center soon, a store that sells hats and I don't know what a dreamcatcher is.
