It's a little early I know, but I'm sitting here at work with nothing to do for the fist time in practically forever.
Im in and psyched!
-
Are there any reviews out there of recent live performances?
-
im in. (for the nyc show anyway). everyone i know here is seeing the arctic monkeys.
-
probably. its the same night as editors. can't decide which to attend as i'm sure both will hit the stage at the same time. wish editors was an early show so i could just pop over to the black cat after.
-
I have tickets for both Editors and Hoodoo Gurus. I keep hoping for some strange occurance that will allow me to see both, but I don't think that's gonna happen.
If I have to choose, I'm all over the Gurus.
-
HOODOO GURUS!!! No comparison to the Editors. I wouldn't miss it for the world!
-
I am in... Can't wait!
-
Gurus....Gurus....Gurus
-
I'll totally flip if they play "Death Ship".
-
I have had my tickets for quite some time and I can't freaking wait! Gonna rock tonight!
-
if anyone has time tonight (after the show) could you post the setlist, or anything you remember them playing. I havent heard their stuff in awhile, and it might pay if i recognized some of their stuff. how sad of me.
-
SPOILER:
These are some of the tunes that I have heard have been popping are: "Come Anytime", "I Want You Back", "Leilani", "Death-Defying", "Out That Door", "Poison Pen", and "Bittersweet". There are too many good tunes for them to play them all, but I really would love to hear something like "Castles In the Air", which could melt butter as far as I'm concerned. Been totally jazzed for this show for weeks.
-
thanks bearman! will give me a start when i get home later tonight to put some of their stuff on. im not sure ive listened to them much since high school/college.
-
The BC site says doors at 8:00. Based on that does any one have any idea for set times?

That usually means 8:30/9:30/10:30. No guarantees though.

So Bearman....Was that you in the front wearing the Joy Division shirt and screaming for Death Ship?
Show was good. Thought the bass player was a bit sloppy at times. Would have liked more off the first 2 albums, but overall very satisfied.
B+

A-
The crowd was thin and the sound sucked, but neither of those are the band's fault.
Other than Magna Cum Louder, I haven't listened to much Hoodoo Gurus in the last 10+ years. I had forgotten that they had a whole bunch of great songs. I thought they played really well considering the club was 1/3 full, at best. Probably not the best way to start off your stateside reunion tour, but they were endearing and I wish them well. I thoroughly enjoyed their set.
I was at class and missed all but the last three songs from the Fake Accents. The first two I heard confirmed the "Pavement" comparisons. The last song was fantastic.
-
Yep Chaz, guilty as charged :) Sadly they didn't comply, but I had a great time. I would agree with ggw, I give the show an A-. I would have loved to hear a few more songs, but in the grand scheme of things it was a very solid show and I'm so glad that I finally got to see them after liking them for a good 20 years.
I figure I'll be the first to post a setlist, since there were a few of us that got one ;)
I Want You Back
Chop
Waking Up Tired
The Real Deal
Come Anytime
In The Wild (awesome)

I liked what I heard, but they were WAY too loud. Even with earplugs.
-
What? I can't quite hear you. Still ringing LOUDLY in my ears.
I was a little sad about the sparse crowd, but thought the show was great The vocals sounded muddy, but I loved the setlist. I was hoping for "Dig It Up", but "What's My Scene" made me smile.
-
Yeah, Dig it Up, Kamikaze Pilot and Death Ship would have been great to hear.
Bearman...next time I spot you i'll come up and say hi.

thanks! cant wait to see them tonight. how long did they play?
-
I'm going B+ -- an A- is really, really great.
The Fake Accents were so horribly loud I couldn't stay in the room longer than a half a song. It may be telling that I'm not a Pavement fan either, but I didn't like them even a teeny bit.
Hoodoos were great; it really was like a Monday night show though, and while the crowd was really in to it, the crowd was sparse. I saw them in Austin and I have to say, several beers should be obligatory for a Gurus show, but I couldn't do it.
I was hoping for a bit longer set list as well, but the set opener of "I Want You Back" and closer "Like Wow...Wipeout" was phenomenal.
Had a great time, and glad I had time to catch up a bit with Chutney and Bearman afterwards.
Now, that "Form a Circle" song...I really liked it with the different vocal style of Brad Sheppard. But, uh, what's the story on the circle?? ;)

About an hour? They started about 10:15, and left after the encore 11:15 or 11:20.

thanks bags. will post tomorrow (or later tonight) about the nyc show. so theyre playing at bb kings here and ive heard nightmare things. i hate times sq anyway, but fortunately its convenient to where i live. it also means drinks should be extremely expensive. double damn! :( theyre coming on at 9 tonight according to the venue, so it could be an early night. and ive made sure ive got my earplugs after reading about the loudness.
-
no i want you back. i could cry. but lets go on.
so this is rather surreal - there was an opener - something like the elms opening. or so it was. and then instead the gurus came out and played 5 songs. and they said - ok that's it for the show. and everyone was confused. then they said - ok thats the early crowd's show. i recall 'good times' (if thats the name of it?), being played. but now that i think of that name, i am sure thats not what its called. ok maybe someone knows of a song that has that line?
so that was the beginning. at 9pm prompt they came on. and around 6, that is when it became 'audience request time'. i guess they always play bb kings, so its a reunion to be back here. anyway - so after 'come anytime' - there were a bunch of shoutouts - and 2 songs later they went back to the set. so im sure this isnt entirely correct.
and btw - for anyone interested. they are playing maxwells on sunday night.
all in all great show. lots of great songs and they truly had a great time. the bassist kept smiling at me, so it made my night. and the sound was not so good. if i didnt know 'come anytime' - i swear id have not recognized it. oh and they ended with a friend of theirs coming up and playing a song they rehearsed (apparently incorrectly) :)
(lets all) turn on
down on me
domino
death-defying (apparently dave's fav song that he ever wrote).
for the ladies (which they were not going to play because they played it last time at bb kings)
come anytime

i think the songs were arthur and good son?
lots of people yelling out for 'iwantyou back'.
regardless -incredible time. and what more - i got them twice! wahoo!
-
and yeah 'good times' was the song i was thinking of. i didnt realize, but i know so many of their songs. i forgot they had so many popular songs, or maybe it means radio was good then?
-

so if they played a song you didn't know, you wouldn't recognized it. BRILLIANT!

that wasnt quite what i meant. they have a ton of popular songs, and most i recognized - just from having used to listen to them all the time. my point i guess was that it was a hugely popular song, and its one of those songs most fans know, but since it was a song i had loved, i recognized the song (sans vocals). obviously if i had never heard of it, id have no clue what it was.
their sound was pretty bad (for vocals) is more or less the point and it was a good thing i was *very* familiar with a chunk of their songs. ironic - their sound was better as an opener.

Anyone want to be my date to the upcoming Hoodoo Guru's show on May 8th?
