Hello 930 Board Member,

You have been invited to join vansmack's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.

In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival/), click the "Sign Up" button and choose to "Join an Existing Group", then "Join a Private Group". Then, when prompted, enter the following information...

 Group ID#: 21092
 Password: ninethirty

The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.

In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.

But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.

If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated.

Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up.  I'm open to a discussion on prizes.

I think you're trying to distract me as I'm worried that I've started a pool and I might not even make it out of week one.

why do you have to watch the game?  personally, i'm quite comfortable picking one game and watching another, especially if the game i pick isn't going to be very good (case in point: detroit vs. oakland   :p  )

Boy you're asking for it...and you shall receive.     And I'm up for ANY side bet for week 1, just make it good because I plan on holding it over you for the ENTIRE season.

I'm up for $5 or $10, but I'd hate for that to deter anybody from signing up.  I'd like a big group...

So, if we can't agree on a price, I will at least buy the winner a 9:30 Club t-shirt.

Sure, what sort of side bet have you got in mind?

I like anything that gets people talking about the Battle For 2nd Worst Team in the NFL.

Oh, something along the lines of the loser having to publicly praise the winners team prior to each game every week, AND provide a short review of the positive aspects of that teams performance that week including why they ARE STILL better than the losers team.

This will continue through the first 8 games, if neither team has at least 3 wins by then, the praising can cease.

AND buy the winner his choice of his teams merchandise, max $25 unless you want to go higher.

I'm letting my side bet doing the talking, but when it comes to this pool, I'll pick with my brain not my ding-a-ling.

I haven't watched an entire NFL game in 3 years, so I don't think I can come close to offering a weekly analysis of the Raiders, if need be. Nor would I actually want any Lions gear.

How about a 9:30 Club giftcard?

That works, but the point was for the loser to at least think about the winners team, so a gift card is fine but the loser still needs to at least check the winners team stat sheet and score every week and make some positive comment.

Alright: $5, Winner Takes All.

 Paypal your money to vansmack@msn.com

If you're not a paypal person, you can email me and we'll work something out.

If you signed up thinking it would be a free pool, sorry about that.  You can delete your entry before kickoff Thursday.  If you fail to delete your entry by Thursday, you are on the hook for the $5.

I am morally opposed to gambling, but I will still play. However, on the off-chance I win, I am instructing all my winnings to go to the National Hopeline Network.

No, no, you're trying to price poor hipster kids out of this. I offered you a valid wager, that seems fair to both sides, and if you don't accept, THEN YOU'RE DUCKING ME!!

I expect that from some of the rest, heck, most of them, but not you, Seth. I always held you in the highest regard, but I'm starting to question that decision.   :(

Ummm, I'm in for $5 (vansmack, check your paypal), but not for $100.  North of about $20, it changes from frugal entertainment to a bad investment decision   :D

have you ever been told that it's BAD MANNERS to badger someone into a bet?  he's already informed you what he's willing to wadger.

besides, if seth is up for this kind of a bet i want in on the action.  i know i can out-pick him.

It's not my goal to badger him into a wager, I just find it insulting that I make him a perfectly good offer and he comes back with something that HE KNOWS I cannot reasonably be in for. The bad manners is trying to price me out of a bet. I have to put food in my kid's mouths!

Oh, I'll do it.  In addition to the $5 entry fee, there is a side pool at $100.  Last one in the side pool takes all.

yup, you'd get $500 if you won (your 100 back + 400 net winnings) plus a pair of VIP tix* - sweet pot.

right now i'm trying to talk myself out of joining...

*EDIT: assumption that it would be a pair, i'm sure seth will clarify.

I was proposing a Seth vs. Julian side pot, but I give the man credit for taking the bait all the same.

Considering the $100 pool. Really feel I have no chance in any pot over 3-4 people though...

When I first read this header:

 "9:30 board survival"

I thought it was an actual survival pool.

So heres a way to make this interesting for all of you gamblers:

Whomever does the worst at the end of the season has to leave the board.

Unfortunately, if previous experience tells anything, there will be more than one person out this week.  We would lose half the board....

To make it more clear on the pool site, use an asterisk after you team name if you are in the side pool.

 For example: Vansmack*

There will be no adding an asterisk after kickoff Thursday, so add now.

If you have an asterisk by your name at Kickoff Thursday, you are on the hook for the extra $100.

In addition, you must be part of the $5 pool to join the $100 side pool.  I thought this was clear but I've received a few PMs about it.

You do not have to participate in the $100 side pool if you only want to be in the $5 pool.  If you don't join the $100 side pool but survive the longest, you only win the $5 pool, which could still be as much as $250.

Sure, that's a good option.  If you are averse to paypal, you can pay for the side pool at the club.

GGW, Eros and I have already paid for the side pool.  I will bring that money when I visit the club in late Sept.

So there you have it - paypal or 9:30 club for payment for the side pool.

I gotta say, this first week is tough.  There just aren't any studs playing cheesepuffs.  Heck, the widest spreads are 6.5 (Titans @ JAGUARS and PATRIOTS @ Jets), and it's not hard to imagine either of those going to the underdog.

What really floors me is that the Chargers (at home) are 6-point favorites over the Bears.

Maybe true but:

Seattle has won three of its last four season openers and holds a 6-1 all-time advantage on Tampa Bay, including a 23-7 win last Dec. 31, which clinched the NFC West title.

My experience is that most of these survivor pools are over after the first few weeks. Everyone goes for a "sure thing" and then there's an upset and most of the league is out. Don't worry about "saving" the good teams till later because it won't last that long. Go for the easy ones early on and three or four weeks into the season you'll have a better idea of who the cupcakes are.

Couldn't even relish them getting jobbed in the superbowl, because it was the phuckin steelers that won.

True dat.

I am a bit fearful that I made the same week 1 pick (SEA) as a dozen others.  In my experience, that greatly increases the odds that Tampa will win.

i'm torn... i'm starting hasselbeck and hackett in the fantasy league, so i want the 'hawks to kick ass.  on the other hand, a tampa victory would greatly thin the survivor pool.

Ditto.  I was worried about how Romo would bounce back after last season's ending, and I definitely wasn't sure about the new RB situation in New York, so I stayed away from that game.

My usual rule for week one is the biggest favorite at home, but when I looked at the line and saw Jacksonville giving 6.5 points, I just couldn't see that game being safe.  I do feel a little badly for those that picked that game and lost as it was supposed to be the safe pick.  I opted for picking Seattle while Alexander was still healthy.

Dallas is good on both sides.  Giants appear/ed to be in disarray.  Giants have (at the least) seriously sketchy secondary and running game.  Kudos to Eli for playing a great game and shutting Tiki the eff up.

What? How can you say Dallas is good on "both sides" when they allowed The Giants to score 35 points on 442 yards of offense? I realize that Terrence Newman was out, but is he really that much of a difference maker? Regardless, you can't say that Dallas was good on both sides of the ball.

That may be true - they got torched.  I bought into the idea that Wade could, if nothing else, improve the D, that Hamlin would help balance R. Williams lack of coverage skills at safety, and that they'd have a great pass rush.  Also didn't realize the extent of their injuries.  Especially if injuries persist, they could be a lot like last year's Skins where performance was much worse than the talent they have on paper.

I agree.  I watched the game last week and they were one or two breaks away from really turning the corner last week.  And by breaks I mean Andre Johnson's legs...and maybe Herm's headset.

The whole NFC East is going to suck it this year.

Dallas has talent, but, compared to Parcells, Wade Phillips is like a substitute teacher - players throw spitballs at him during film review.

The Giants suck.  I say this as a lifelong Giants fan.  Coughlin is a jackass and his players hate him.  He should coach high school football.  Jared Lorenzen showed his true colors last week when, on 4th and 4 and the game still within a single score, he ran two yards and then slid.  He's almost 300 lbs.  He shouldn't play like a pussy.

Every one has been waiting for the Eagles to regain their NFC championship form.  It ain't gonna happen.

The Redskins are prominently featured in the new Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary -- right next to the word "mediocre."

One of two things happen this week - the vast majority of the people in the pool win, or the vast majority of the people in the pool go out on a huge upset.  There will be no in between this week.

You can pass on the "say nice things" part of the bet and just send a giftcard. I have no doubt you're not actually going to say anything nice, and since I care about the Lions about as much as I care about  Everybody Loves Raymond, you're not going to get my dander up.   ;)

If you want to be useful, throw some Red Wings training camp updates in there. Will we sign Brett Sopel or is Meech coming up from Grand Rapids as defenseman 7? If we send him back down, will he clear waivers? How does Ericcson look?

Let's see . . . they say there's a fine line between genius and crazy, and there is a very fine line between picking the Raiders (sight unseen) and crazy.  If my basic algebra is correct, by the transitive theory, picking the Raiders is genius.  A losing pick, but genius.  So you have that going for you, which is nice.

Yeah, that would've thinned our league a bit. With Oakland, Cleveland, and Detroit looking, well, not completely terrible, my strategy for picking games is going out the window. [/b]
I know the feeling.  I thought I'd be pretty safe picking the Giants over the Redskins next week...but I'm no longer thinking that way.  Perhaps I should go with Miami...since they haven't won yet

He's talking about a $500 or $1000 bet. It's on the thread a page or two back.

the only way to win in vegas is to be willing to lose some, you need to be able to ride out the ups and downs, now I am sure I won't be talking like it is so easy when I am there in a couple of weeks

I was a little surprised by the number of people who took a road team in week 2.  Seemed like an unecessary chance this soon to me.

And I've never really liked Sebastian Janikowski.  Now I'm sure I hate him.

We could also set up a Pick 'Em pool - high or low stakes.  Pick all games against the spread each week.  Most total correct at the end of the year wins.

sometimes even good picks don't work out and you want a second chance.  there was nothing wrong with picking of jacksonville (at home) over tennessee in week one, it was perfectly legit pick and definitely favored by bookies.

David Garrard over Vince Young.  That's what you picked.  Remember when Jack Del Rio went ape shit because the Jags didn't pick Brady Quinn at his bequest.  He was telling you something - that the QB situation in Jacksonville is worse that any one imagines...fortunately for him, this week the other team had Joey Harrington.

that was the one the bookies got wrong, and it was painfully obvious to most people ... tennessee ended the year red-hot, no one really knew if vince young was the real deal or not (he is), and jacksonville is full of question marks ... but more important than jax's shortcomings is that the titans may be the real deal ... i couldn't believe how many points the jags were getting in that game

I also like the idea that if someone wins other than Seth, he will book the band of their choice to play the Club (to which the VIP tix would apply).  I'm thinking a return of Radiohead or Van Halen.

Sweetcell and Eros are in the $50 camp.

6949, Sal Paradise, Mobius and Seth are in the $100 camp.

 Hoya is at $25.

Vansmack and GGW are in at $100.

In the past couple of days, there's been a lot of people in the $5 pool who sent their money in.  Thank you for that.  There's a few of you left who haven't paid - so please do so today.

No, it was my call.  I wanted to be democratic, but I neglected the fact that Seth originally requested the new pool at $100 and I made it $50, without regard to who asked for the new pool.

 It was my bad.

I can't find it right now, but on one of my tech dork web sites, a guy posted a picture of his DirecTV game mix projected on a wall above and behind his big screen where he was watching his favorite team in HD.  It was incredible and way over the top, so I'm not going to start worrying about you until you reach that point.

You make me laugh, yes, even when you're insulting me. Yes that is my apartment. No I do not have a good job nor do I make anything even close to 6 figures.  I live in the suburbs with roommates to save on rent.  I still drive my paid-off car that's 6 years old. I bought my latest Mcnabb jersey (in green) off Ebay.

if translated to english, would your question be in regards to the uniforms worn by the'skins this past weekend?  if so, the answer is no.  they were wearing throwback uniforms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throwback_uniform), a week three tradition in the NFL.  i believe that this sunday's look was that of the '71-'72 season. the logo on the helmet designed by vince lombardi during his one year as the redskins' head coach.

and in the second chance pool (AKA the also-rans), we have another week with a 100% survival rate.  however, things should be shaking down in the next week or two as the majority of favorites have been taken.  nice move by eros chosing the cards. i predict that this pool will be over by week 8, week 9 max.

I will admit to getting excited when I saw that I had a chance to win the sidebet this week, but then I saw that my hope rests in Joey Harrington and I wasn't very excited.  However, when Leftwich came in, my eyes were glued to that game.  I still don't get how two drives in the red zone in the last 5 minutes ended up yielding 0 points.  Oh well.

And yes, weeks 6 and 7 are not going to be easy.

i got a good chuckle outta that, guess everyone thought that NOR > STL was a sure thing.  on any given sunday...

two options come to mind: split the pot between the last men standing, or pretend that this week never happened and continue next week (couldn't use yahoo sports anymore, someone would have to manually manage the pool offline).  personally, i'm happy to end it here and take the money.

I'm happy to end it right there and cut my losses, even though I still had New England and Indy in my pocket.

and now SDS are giving it to Indy?  this week has been upset central.  in my other survivor pool, there were 16 people going in to this week.  only three survived, with two seattle picks left for tomorrow.  massacre.

while i have y'allz attention: where's a good place to find out as ASAP if shaun alexander will be starting tomorrow?  everything i've read says it's a game-time decision with a lean towards the negative, but what source(s) will have the info first?  thanks.

As an strict constructionist, I believe we must follow the rules on this one.  See "How Do I Win?", available at  http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/footballsurvival/winning/footballs-12.html (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/footballsurvival/winning/footballs-12.html)  (last visited Nov. 11, 2007) ("In the event that the last Active members in a group are all Eliminated together in the same week, all are declared winners.").

Agreed. That whole bye week thing had me a bit worried.

But there really didn't seem much else available.  I had already picked PIT and SEA. KC, CAR and GB were favorites, but I didn't feel real good about any of those either.  Hats off to Favre - dude is on fire.

No doubt. He makes it seem like he's seeing everything in slo mo. Their RB is coming along too. It's looking like the Pack vs.Dallas for the NFC.

Good Question. Congrats to Yinzer if he wins with Seattle tonight! But,of course he wasn't in on the side bets and wouldn't be eligible for that pot?? Right, Smackie??

Read them again. I'm sure there's a rule that says Commish has final say over all matters.

Yinzer will be the $5 pool winner only if Seattle holds on.  I'm rooting for him too so I don't have to divide that $5 pool up by 8 people.

Eliminated in Week 10

 Sparx says (NOR)
 challenged (CAR)
 Phibesphootball* (NOR)
 Vansmack* (NOR)
 HoyaParanoia* (NOR)
 The Big Sack (NOR)
 ggw* (NOR)

 Picks

 6 New Orleans
 1 Carolina
 1 Seahawks

 AND THE WINNER IS:

Yinzer, who rode a Shaun Alexanderless Seattle Seahawks team to victory.

Congrats.  If gambling were legal, Yinzer would be receiving a payout of $150.

Vansmack, GGW, Hoya and Phibes in the sidebet would be receiving $250 each if gambling were legal.

And in the second chance pool, Hoya, Sweetcell and Eros would be splitting $400 ($133 each), again, if gambling were legal.

Thanks again, Smackie, for running the show!!
Maybe next time I'll stick with my gut. I took Favre and the Pack and then changed my selection. Ye of little faith indeed!

I couldn't think of a more entertaining way to gamble away $150. The roulette wheel certainly doesn't last 7 weeks.

I did the same thing, but I blame the Chargers.  Had they not made Minnesota look so damn good the week before, even with a backup QB, I would have taken the Pack.  Instead I took the heavy favorite, despite breaking my no bye week underdogs rule.  Dammit.

My pleasure on running the pool.  If you're a winner, PM me your snail mail address or paypal address for your "certificate of honor."
