Title: V Fest
Post by: lbcardoni on March 15, 2007, 10:01:00 am
Might as well start the rumorama thread...

I heard 2 days with Police and Smashing Pumpkins headlining.

This rumour has made its rounds in the SP community as well, for what it's worth.

Oh, speaking of V Fest and the Pumpkins:

Bjork and the Pumpkins are confirmed as the headiners for V Fest Canada, in Toronto, Sept. 8 & 9.

search "smashing pumpkins" in ticketmaster for more complete lineups for each day.

do any of these rumors include a date?  if it's going to be two days, i might want a hotel room in owl'bawlmer to minimize the back-n-forth...

I've heard 9/22 & 9/23 somewhere, which makes sense because I think V Fest Baltimore was 2 weeks after V Fest Toronto last year.

I wouldn't go booking a hotel room on a vague rumour though.

If you get a cheap rate through travelocity or something like that, you often cannot get out of it. Obviously a normal "call the hotel" reservation is easy to get out of.

hotels in "bawlmer" are pretty cheap already, actually!
and if you are looking for a room for VFest, i'd actually try towson.  cheaper and just as close.

2 days?

Camping there is a negatory and there's 0 hotels anywhere near Pimlico and the traffic getting to a from the course would be an incredible headache. But it comes with a 2 day festival.

 Pumkins = $$$
 Police = eh.

I mean i love The Police but i wouldnt be super psyched to see them. Rage!!!

i'm afraid of what the inlcusion of the police will do to ticket prices.  i'd be interested in seeing them, sure, but they wouldn't be the main reason i'd hit vfest.  if the police add $50-60 or more to the price of each ticket - i'd rather do without.  i might be wrong here, but last year i believe there wasn't much difference in price between a one-day vfest ticket and a 2-day lollapalooza ticket.  vfest draws bigger names that demand more $, so it's not quite apples to apples, but it does add a little perspective...

I believe a 3 day pass to lolla last year was somewhere between 250-300 or something...i think thats way off, but V Fest was 100 bucks a ticket.

I think you're way off. If you waited till the last week and bought a pair of 3 day passes, it might have approached 250.

Union Station, Washington, D.C.: Have you heard ANYTHING about a Police date in DC? I'm dying over here. Thanks.

 J. Freedom du Lac: Sure, I've heard lots. So far, it's all rumor, speculation and so forth. Not that we're above trading in that sort of pseudo-information or anything. The date that keeps coming up is Aug. 4. If you're really dying to see them, don't book a vacation for that weekend.

last year 3-day passes were either $160 or $180 to lolla...even if you bought at the gate.

I would love to see Daft Punk play the V-fest. Same with the Smashing Pumpkins. Also, add placebo to that dream list.

I have a feeling whatever seth is cooking up, it's gonna be awesome.

From our boy, J. Free....

Police state: Free are the Police coming here this summer? No DC date on their website. Do I have to pay a fortune to go to NY/NJ to see them?

 J. Freedom du Lac: OK, OK -- I finally have something for you here. This has been long rumored and appears to be Happening For Real Now. Haven't gotten hard confirmation, but I'm reading the tea leaves, and they're telling me this is pretty much a done deal.

The Police will headline this year's Virgin Festival on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Pimlico in Baltimore. You read it here first.

I'm also hearing that the Virgin Festival will be a two-day affair this time around.

Second day will be Sunday, Aug. 5, and the rumored headliner that day is another reunion band: The Smashing Pumpkins.

No, I don't have any idea when tickets are likely to go on sale, or who else is playing, or any of that.

I just know that if you're hoping to see the Police around here, that you shouldn't book a vacation the first weekend in August.

Moving the date to August seems like a bad move to me.  Why compete with Lolla and the heat?
Title: Re: V Fest

Is there really that much competition with LollaPalooza? One is in Chicago, the other is in Baltimore. Aren't both cities able to fill a baseball park on the same night on any given Saturday (well the O's would if they had a good team)? It would seem that both cities would be able to have concurrent music festivals as well.

yeah, i dont think competition is the problem, although it could pose some issues with bands playing in chicago and not baltimre.

but it may be quite hot in August in Baltimore.

i dont like an early august date either. since i decided last year that Lolla and Virgin would be my 2 festivals each year.....

I would think the biggest issues would be the artists. It would surprise me if the Pumpkins weren't a part of Lollapalooza this year, but they are big enough to play one city one night, and fly to the other the next. August sounds like a move done solely to get the Police involved, if this is even to be the case. Freedom isn't exactly a reliable source IMHO.

The good thing is it won't compete with DAM! Festival 2007!

While I'm still Chicago bound, I'm glad to see this line-up come to the area and the expansion to 2 days it bodes well for the future.  I hope in doesnt' coincide with Lolla every year, as there will be no contest in my mind as the urban setting, ample opportunities to come and go from the fest to get decent meals, multiple after-show shows, and late night partying will trump even a better line-up in Baltimore any day.  But again it's a good sign and I'd support if there wasn't a conflict with Lolla.

If they could just add L7 to this Pimlico lineup I will be the first one in line for tickets.  I won't care how much the "fee due to the addition of the reunited Police" comes out to be.
Actually, I looked at Police tickets when they went on sale and the cheapest were 70 bucks from what I remember.  I'm usually willing to bust out cash for a good show, but 70 bucks for crappy seats??  If I end up paying over 100 bucks for this, I won't care.  Unless of course the rest of the lineup is atrocious.  I wasn't wild about last years lineup but still had a good time.  I'm glad they are doing it again.

Smashing Pumpkins "First US Performance in 7 years"  Well that would mean they're not playing on the first night of Lolla which is not what I've heard.  Could be hyperbole, or perhaps Sir Richard doesn't know IL is in the US, or my source sucks.

"It's not ideal [to be the same weekend as Lollapalooza], but given the choice of booking the Police or not we had to go for it," Hurwitz says. "If anything it's probably helped us because we were able to book some bands that were out already for Lolla. Hopefully both festivals will be strong enough that it doesn't matter."

The Pumpkins cannot close out Lollapalooza because they are playing VFest that night. What night do we know Daft Punk to be? With those two, you should be able to figure out what nights PJ and SP are.

Also, for anyone who went last year - did the headliners (or all bands) get full sets? If I get 50 minutes of Police and SP instead of fullsets I may riot.

julian:  last year's line-up with timeslots (http://www.virginfestival.com/2006/images/VirginFestival_Schedule-1069.pdf).  the who played for a bit longer, and the chilis went on late and played for over an hour and a half.  so headliners got full sets, all others got an hour.

but this year's festie is 2 days, so maybe everyone will be given more time.

yeah. pretty much everyone got at least an hour.

but for bands like Wolfmother, Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley, one hour was plenty enough time to do all of their songs!

i dont like 40 minute sets, but honestly, i dont wanna hear 90 minutes of some band with 2 albums, nor can i think of 24 bands with 4+ albums i'd actually wanna see.

if they get Daft Punk and JAMC, i'll be flying home from Jamaica two days early!

Awesome, thanks for the help.

In theory, you should not have two of your biggest bands playing at the same time though (Flaming Lips and RHCP). For all the pot shots at RHCP, people should not have to choose between 2 of the 3 biggest bands on the bill. The "headliner" should go on pretty much without any rival.

I didn't witness an inordinate amount of titties, but there were kids TRASHED as soon as I touched down.  I got there right before the Raconteurs and I saw at least 8 kids down for the count before we Jack & the boys got thru 2 tracks.  Kids hurling on blankets, grass, & what not.  But for the most part it was 20 somethings & up (around me, anyway) coming to have a good time.  I'm still salty as fuck for getting raped on those so-called "VIP" seats, though . . . .

ok, it almost was like two festivals, really.

on one side, you had Wolfmother, Raconteus, Gnarls, Killers, Who and RHCP...and that was packed up front, lots of drunk folks, hard to get a spot and if you got one...hold onto it!

on the other side, you had New Porno, CYHSY, Brazillian Girls, Thiev. Corp, Scissor Sisters, Lips.  this side was flowing nicely. in between bands it was easy to move up close, and while the bands were on , a spot next to the relatively close sound board was easily attainable. (perhaps the lips drew a bigger crowd)

so, i think if you were at stage 2, it was easy breezy. Stage 1 took some planning and preparation.

as for HFS=like atmosphere...seemed like a bit of an older crowd. not that college kids are any more fun to put up with that high school kids! and i dont recall seeing any titties!!!

I think the key to having a successful festival these days is to keep the crowd moving around so that people arent just sitting in the sun all day, and everyones not hitting the bathroom/beer lines at the same time.

V-fest could have done better having two equally sized stages, with large and small bands going on both stages.

I dont care much for the headliner plays unopposed rule, i highly doubt that more than 10% of last years crowd was all that torn between the lips and the chili peppers.

It doesn't bother me so much with those specific bands. Obviously, I'd rather see Flaming Lips as most of us would. But in principle, it's a bad idea. If, for example, Daft Punk got booked or Jesus And Mary Chain and I had to choose between the Pumpkins and Daft Punk/JAMC, I'd be pissed as hell.

I know you can never assure someone not being torn between two bands, but I think the undeniably biggest draws (last year RHCP, The Who, Flaming Lips) should not overlap.

so 12 slots total per day, 6 per stage... by my rough estimate that means 3 bands get an hour and the other 3 get an hour and a half (might even be able to squeeze in 2 + 4).  i'd be most pleased with that.

there were indeed a number of people passed out drunk, at the time i was kinda shocked (must have seen a dozen or so), but considering the tens of thousands of people there one should expect this.  wasn't out of control, at no point was i bothered by anyone's impibing.

there was a distinct lack of flashing... maybe the hot august weather will change that this year.

I liked the atmosphere at the Virgin Fest. No where near as many drunks as one would expect.  Not as big of a Emo "Hot Topic" crowd.  Although by the time the Chilli Peppers came on, more of them came out from hiding. But still, I can't think of one person who put a damper on my time.  Seemed for the most part to be people who came to have a good, clean time.
Only thing that sucked was having to choose between the Flaming Lips and Chili Peppers.
Also, easily the worst parking arrangement i have ever seen.  that area was just not ready for that much traffic.  That small ghetto area, with narrow streets. We basically just came to a stand still for a few hours.  Ended up missing Wolfmother and The Racontouers.  This year, i will leave at the crack of dawn.

alternately, park your car a few miles away and take public transportation, there is a train/metro station near pimlico.

another alternative: get a hotel room nearby.  there are some really cheap hotels within a mile of the race track, grab'em while you can and cancel the reservation later if you change your mind.  have look at pictures first though - i saw one place that was $50/55 a night but looked hideous.  room had exposed cinder block walls painted an awful yellow (possibly once white and turned yellow with decades of cigarette smoke).

(I have NO idea what Seth looks like.)  VIP tix were $250 a pop, and you couldn't get singles.  So really $500.  $540 with the bullshit service charges.  I was promised a roped off area IN FRONT of the stage, and what I got is fucked and placed 75 - 100 yards from the stage in the so-called VIP area.  Which they were letting every Tom, Dick, & Harriet into any fuckin' way.  The people who paid $100+ had a WAY better view than I did.

Needless to say, I'm still hot as fuck over that whole ordeal.  I don't mind spending good money but I hate being lied to.  I don't know if it was I.M.P. or Virgin that dropped the ball on the whole VIP thing, but it put a SEVERE black eye on what could have been an otherwise perfect day.  I'm still aggy about that shit . . . .

hum, i would argue that... the people who fought their way to the front and endured a complete lack of personal space (and crab cakes) might have had a better view.  wasn't the VIP thing raised off the ground?  i dove in and got a decent view for a few acts, but it was hard work, you couldn't leave, and there was much shoving and crowd surfing to endure.  you were shoved into the person in front of you who was inevitably taller, blocking your view.  consequently, most of the festie was spent watching the stage from a far distance because getting close was too much of a hassle.  i totally understand you questioning whether the VIP thing was worth the 2.5 times mark-up, but please don't think that the pit was a club med     :)     i assure you that your 75-100 yards was closer than i was able to get to the main stage all day.

seth will probably be reading this, so let's be constructive: what would you expect for that VIP price?  a front-row lawn-chair ain't gonna happen, so...

Ideally, in my mind, VIP would have access to seperate bars (perhaps full bars not beer gardens), seperate bathrooms, and perhaps access to some of the restaurants within Pimlico's facilities.

I don't really know what there is to offer aside from that.

Any chance the beers might be cheaper this year?  Besides the parking debacle, that was the only gripe I had.  Also, I thought it seemed pretty crowded (especially when you went to the larger stage) considering that it was only half full.  I can't imagine what a pain in the ass a sold out 2007 show might be like.

vip areas should (and do) normally include

 1. seperate bathrooms
 2. seperate bars / food
 3. a vantage point to watch the bands from, not always close, but usually raised up (or on a hill, in Coachella's case) so even the shortest of folks can see, maybe even while sitting.

VIP is maybe the wrong term, but it does let you enjoy the concert, without feeling like you're right in the middle of it.

maybe VOP = Very Old People

I had a blast last year and will probably attend this year if the rest of the lineup fills out nicely. Not exactly crazy over the headliners at this time. The parking situation was a COMPLETE joke, I will have to say. Paid for a "special" pass and STILL had to park a mile away. Better get that situation under control.

i dunno if the vip tickets were cheaper they might be worth if worth for a "better" vantage point, because by the time The Who hit the stage getting any sort of view if you were working your way back and forth was impossible. The heat from the bodies near the main stage made it hard to enjoy the show...

I went to V fest last year, from what i remember by the time The Killers hit the stage i made my way back, i skipped out on GNarls to get food and use the potty and walk around, THe Killers seemed to start the crowd packing. Getting back up front was a bitch, a bunch of angry drunk 7 foot tall guys like "SAY EXCUSE ME FUCKHEAD" and i was like whatever. And i was about 50 or 60 feet from the stage when The Who went on and it was like torture, everyone knew their set was ending and was shoving to get up front for the Peppers. I couldn't breathe and was hot as hell so i hopped the rail. I wanted to see the Peppers but was wondering "How often can i see The Flaming Lips!?", so i hit the second stage and made it right up front with no problems.

I'm going this year regardless of the line-up, but if they add Daft Punk....oh...its fucking on.

Excellent news Seth... My brother is bummed at the thought of seeing The Police in a festival experience but maybe some VIP treatment will encourage him to see the show.  All I need for a good summer festival experience is shade to sit in occasionally and lots of water.

I know it's already been said, but I gotta echo -- it sucks that the Fest is same wknd as Lolla.  I'll be going to Lolla, with the hopes that perhaps the same bands will play both festivals.... but with the prayer too that that setup won't work well enough so that Seth will want to coincide w/ Lolla in future years.

I thought all along that The Police, after playing Fri at MSG and then Giants on Sunday, wouldn't need/want to throw in a Saturday date in Balto.  But what do I know...
Title: Re: V Fest
Post by: ChampionshipVinyl on March 24, 2007, 08:30:00 am
Regarding the Lolla weekened conflict, Frankly, who cares?! Better than Baltimore and Washington have a terrific concert weekend than not, regardless of when it is and what else it might conflict with.

And for most people in the area, going to Pimlico to see the V Fest is much more reasonable than flying or driving to Chicago, paying for a hotel room and for all of the other requirements of an out-of-town stay.

Great job Seth of addressing the local concert needs and not worrying about what is happening a thousand miles away.

Did anyone use the free shuttle service last year from the light rail station to pimlico?  How often did it run and did they accomodate anyone who got out real late from the concert or was there a cutoff time?  I hope they have that again this year.  Thanks.

We took the metro down to the Rogers Avenue Station, where there was supposed to be a free shuttle bus, but it never showed. We waited over a half an hour before an MTA bus that said "Pimlico" on the front showed up, but it wasn't free (not that I cared at that point).  Of course, we did show up pretty early so that may have had something to do with it.

We didn't take the metro back... we caught a ride b/c we didn't want to deal w/the crowds at the station, so I can't comment on the post-concert service.  I'm curious to hear as well...  it's a great way to get down there (esp if if the shuttle actually shows up this time).

I caught the metro down to Rogers Ave., and there was no "free shuttle" there at all.  There was a MTA bus that said Pimlico and I asked them what was up.  They said that some other shuttle type thing had been there, but the driver didn't seem to know what was going on, and left after a few minutes, never to return.  This was quite early, as I got to Pimlico about an hour before Kasabian went on.  I left during the middle of the Scissor Sisters set, (which  sucked, gf was sick at the time) and asked about 4 cops that were sitting around and a couple of V fest employees where the free shuttles were.  Never found one.  Ended up sharing a cab w/ a couple of Brits that were in the same predicament.  Took the cab to the metro and then home.  One of the policemen actually said that the metro was walking distance but that in that neighborhood we'd "never make it through alive".

we took the light rail from Camden Yards to (i forget which light rail stop, cold spring lane, i think) where there was a shuttle that took us right to the show.  we left during the lips' last song, walked back to where we'd gotten off the bus that morning.  Busses were there, we got on, and they took us right to the Light Rail stop again.  no problems, no worries, no confusion.

we left pimlico at 10 minutes of 10pm and were home at 10:45pm.

not sure how the Metro worked out, but the light rail was easy breezy, so i strongly suggest that route this year.  as with anything though, i am sure Seth is working on better transportation this year.

This was probably the last decent travelling lolla. Any of these bands would be a fine addition for vfest. The Flaming lips were the highlight for me. Beautiful day at Starlake Ampitheatre, shrooms, bubble machine and killer Lips live for my 1st time seeing them. Been a fan  ever since. i went to vfest last year and decided to upgrade to vip. wasnt worth it really. we had port-o-potties like everyone else. we were able to use the bathrooms in the grandstand and have air conditioning, but you couldnt see the stage there. also everyone that was in the grandstand area wasnt vip, luckily everyone didnt know about it. we could use the bleachers, but they are too far from the stage. the area that was roped off wasnt raised, it was the same level as everything else. i was lucky enough to grab a good spot not to far from the stage and had a great view of the peppers so i wasnt pissed about the waste of money.

In the "Hey Seth" thread, people asked Seth to bring Modest Mouse to DC since they're skipping the area this spring, and Seth - who's booking VFest - responded that they were coming "in early August." People have taken it as a de facto Modest Mouse @ VFest confirmation.

 Digweed and Sasha for Saturday.

Man, Booka Shade and those two? I'm assuming there's going to be a dance tent and the lineup is pretty good for that so far. May have to spend much of my day in there.

It would be cool to add BT to the Dance tent but a Dance tent alone will not get me to the festival.

have we ever gotten a definitive answer on how they are able to play any big festival in the area while never playing club venues in DC?

are they the most popular rock band in the area?

i've always been fascinated by the demographics of the DC/MD/VA area

i'm guessing their fanbase consists of 20 and 30-somethings who grew up in between DC and MD, maybe went to Towson or UMCP/UMBC for school, maybe didn't, and never really left their hometown ... the same ones you see in dewey and ocean city

it seems like there's a similar demographic of "young adults" (20 to 30-somethings) in northern virginia who grew up in fairfax, went to radford or JMU or something, and stayed in their hometown ... but it doesn't seem like the virginians move to maryland or vice-versa, and they DEFINITELY don't move into DC proper

i'm guessing these are the people who vote for Junk Food or Gonzo's Nose as the best local band in those annual washpost polls

does any of this make sense or is it way off base?  not trying to be demeaning at all, just curious

Does anybody else just wish VFest would just go away, so you could just see the two or three bands you really want to see in a more intimate setting at a lower cost on separate days? (i.e. the Raconteurs last year, Amy Winehouse this year, etc.)

I don't wish it would "go away", but it does kinda stink that bands play it and it is considered their DC/B'more tour stop (e.g., The Police).  There are a lot of cool things about festivals, but sometimes I'd rather see a band's full set in a slightly smaller setting.

Calm down, man. The Police will be back in the fall. They'll come thru DC on their 2nd go-around for North America. At this point, I'd bet money on Verizon . . .

i personally would rather see most bands i like in a larger setting with more people, more fun, more craziness.

smaller settings are cool for some bands. but i like the large setting just as much most of the time.  plus you get to see 9 bands in one day instead of only 1 or 2  :)

Wish you could have gotten the White Stripes, but oh well.
Would LOVE to see Queens of the Stone Age added.
Maybe even Eagles of Death Metal. Don't think they have a new album coming out, but they fit in so perfectly with the atmosphere of V-Fest.
Other bands with new albums in 07:
RadioHead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gnarls Barkley, Oasis?  I know all of them outside of Gnarls Barkley are probably a pipe dream, but one can wish.
Please don't add Panic at the Disco, or any of the bands like that with new albums coming out.
GREAT JOB SO FAR, can't wait for the rest of the lineup!!!!!!

no way! OAR tops 311 in that respect by a MILE!!!  and being from the area, OAR would attract so many more fratboys than 311 would anyway.  i think Dave Matthews might top 311 too.

One useful tidbit this may be telling us is that the lineup will be unveilied on 4/27. Other than that, Sunday on the mainstage is gonna be awful, I'll be running far, far away from 311 and Velvet Revolver.

Its a festival with tons of bands so I have a hard time imagining that there won't be bands that I dislike.  The Police, Beastie Boys, and Bad Brains have me going no matter what.  I can't stand 311, but now that we've weathered the Silverchair rumors, I'm ready to accept anyone.  I don't think I've ever gone to a festival that was a dream lineup from start to finish.  And V Fest is big, so 311 AND Silverchair AND OAR can all go on together for an hour-and-a-half super fratty-cake jam session and I'm sure I can find other things to do.  There are two stages, right?  And beer.  And a dance tent.  And of course, the killer batting cages and video game hut and freakshow thing off to the side.

Just a heads up, On Tap is doing a bus trip from DC and/or Arlington this year and as of right now, we are booking hotels in the package. It'll be like 10 busfuls of people, a party atmosphere and probably way more affordable than if you drove, booked a hotel, and bought a ticket yourself. Keep checking www.ontaponline.com (http://www.ontaponline.com) for details (We have a My Chemical Romance Bus Trip 4/27 that should be awesome)!

Title: Re: V Fest
Post by: sweetcell on April 20, 2007, 02:15:00 pm
rhett - based on last year's traffic, 40 miles might as well have been 4000.  also, let's not forget the drunk-driving factor.

i'm currently holding a hotel reservation for VFest weekend about a mile away from pimlico.  if i decide to go, i'll  be driving up friday night and staying until monday morning.  there are few things i enjoy less after a long day of partying at a festival than being stuck in traffic for 2+ hours.  this is also why i pretty much refused to go back to nissan pavilion.
Title: Re: V Fest
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on April 20, 2007, 02:28:00 pm
People worry about being hit by a drunk driver so they book a hotel room? People don't do that if they're going to a Ravens game, do they?

Why not leave a few minutes early and beat the crowd? Though I don't go to concerts of this size, I do occasionally go to large sporting events, and simply just leave early and walk fast to the car, and never have traffic problems.

Man, y'all got a lot of disposable income, flying around the country for rock concerts, or booking hotels for local concerts!

I think the bigger concern is they don't want to BE a drunk driver. If you're throwing back beers all day for 10 hours, you're probably legally verschnikkered by the end of the day, "tolerance" or not.

actually, my concern about drunk driving is not wanting to do it.  i know i'm going to drink at the show, so i shouldn't be driving - and need to plan accordingly.  although there are other ways out of it (designated driver, take bus/shuttle, etc) i feel that a local hotel is the solution that fits me best (with fringe benefits like traffic-avoidance and option to party on should i have the energy and desire).

I don't know why people do it, but I see them do it all the time. If someone was to drink even 2 beers late enough in the evening, they'd probably still be legally impaired when they went to drive home.

heh, i'm definitely not a fratboy, never belonged to a frat (don't have them where i went to college) and i can't stand DMB  :)

i won't be throwing 'em back non-stop for 10 hours, but i probably will have more than one should before driving.  i do a lot a stupid sh*t on a far too regular a basis but drunk driving is one i'm pretty adamant about keeping off my resume.  doing the "stop drinking in time to drive" routine just makes me nervous and hampers my ability to enjoy the evening.

We're doing a hotel option (we will also have an option of just bus-ing it up) mostly because the concert goes so late and then starts up so early the next day! With that normal 40 minute drive taking over an hour with traffic, wouldn't you like somewhere to rest your head in between, not to mention meet new people (slumber party anyone?!). It won't be that expensive- will be a steal since it would be less than what you would pay if you did it on your own (group discount!).

Check out the Virgin Festival's homepage, www.virginfestival.com, (http://www.virginfestival.com,) "Full Lineup & Ticket Info Coming Friday 4/27." Well I guess we're gonna find out about this soon. I also think this definitely means that 311 will be playing. I'm really hoping they add some good bands to this show, I'm really not excited for anyone except for the headliners and Modest Mouse thus far.

I agree.  It would be nice to see Modest Mouse performing some of the new stuff, and I've somehow never seen Beastie Boys, but those aren't really reasons to spend a sweltering August day amongst drunk frat boys.

There's only one artist on that whole list that I'd want to see, and she probably sucks live.

i'm with you all.  i've got 3 i'd like to see, Fountains of Wayne, Paolo and Fratellis.  but those arent even close to being the headliners.

i'm sure theres a few more gems in the lineup, though.

Post by: kosmo vinyl on April 24, 2007, 12:23:00 pm
well FOW aren't much of a must see live anymore IMHO, having seen three times and none of them what I would call stellar performances...

Amy Winehouse was painful to watch on the Brit Awards, Paulo came out to "help" out on song at one of the Paul Weller shows and was just plain cringe worthy..

I've reached the point in my life where I can wait and pay to see the Police on their own.  And it's only a matter of time for Fratellis to hit an area club.

MSTRKRFT, Sasha & Digweed, Modest Mouse, Beastie Boys, Bad Brains and Police trump the entire lineup of last year.  And although I can't say I am a rabid fan of any of last year's artists (except Drive-by Truckers, who I missed while sitting in traffic), I still had a good time.  With the exception of the ten dollar beers.

Just as a suggestion, since I may do this again this year, would it be possible to leave a little bit earlier and catch the first band this time?

Don't know about the laws regarding busses and such but you may want to look into taking another route. Even better if you can zone in online to some of those traffic sites to see what's moving and what's not. Just a thought.

Btw, I think it's a great idea that you are offering an over-nighter. It would be the rare bird who doesn't mind getting up the next day to have to drive all the way back up and then home again when doing the 2 day option. Shit, most DC folk won't even bother coming up to Baltimore just for one event let alone a back to back deal. I know I sure wouldn't want to do so and I'm use to having to leave town to satisfy my musical cravings.

I guess I'll still go, I told my friend that Bad Brains was playing and he told me to shut up because he was going no matter who else is there. Saw FOW last night and they put on a great show. I wouldn't say they are the most engaging band on stage, but their music speaks for itself. They played songs from all of their albums and were sounding top-notch. It was nice to see an older crowd at webster hall (vs all the really young kids, not that theres anything wrong with that), but a nice change.

my only complaint is that even with 2 encores their set was only about an hour long. Chris was losing his voice and towards the end could barely sing, but his performance was still great. theres a few more songs id have loved to have heard from Utopia Parkway, but nothing that I can complain to much about.

I will say Robbers on High Street has to come up with something. They are so boring on stage, and their music is quite good. Its just a shame that their stage presence still hasnt come about. Its never been the same since opening up for Ambulance Ltd.

In other news, i've completely lost my voice and im going to see faithless tonight. oh man this rather sucks since im sick as hell. must get better for tribeca cant get any movie stars sick while im volunteering.

I think that 60 minute show is typical for FOW Same shit they pulled on a few years ago at 9:30. Why do these bands who do have a plethora of material to cull from choose to rip their fans off with short shows?

have you two justice fans heard of Krazy Baldhead?  he's are on the same label as Justice and he rocks out much much much much harder.

dont think he does as much remix stuff, but his original material is about as dancefloor-rocking as you can get without dressing like a robot or having any block rocking beats...if you know what i mean.

Allmusic says their first album came out in November 1995. I really wouldn't know, I couldn't name a single song by them.

Apparently there were two other bands called Incubus that predated them.

incubus was a band since 1991 according to Wikipedia, but their first full-length nationally sold LP was SCIENCE in late 1997, and they didnt hit the airwaves so to speak until 1999/2000 with "Pardon Me"

If someone with some pull around here could do everyone a favor a tack on the Melvins, Beth Orton, and Reverend Horton Heat, that would be great.  Thanks.

EMF and Ned's Atomic Dustbin as a pairing? NO WAY! Ned's were WAY better. I know some of you would totally agree on that one. And Jesus Jones' first LP was pretty damn amazing, esp. for the time it came out (I thought they were trying to go into a more modern version of Big Audio Dynamite). Sadly, it didn't last.

How about Robert Pollard and Cheap Trick to show this wussie indie rockers how it's done with 12 string bass and several neck guitars set to STUN.

Only if they play "The Flame" three or four times.

somehow Seth is surprised that 311 and Velvet Revolver arent popular bands wit the regulars on this board.

besides, most of the regulars on this board werent planning on going to Vfest anyway, regardless of price or lineup. am i right?

I am planning on going for the original bands announced. SP alone gets me in the building. And I'm grateful ticket prices stayed the same as last year.

That said, 311 and Velvet Revolver make me cringe.

Precisely. The only 2 bands I remotely give a rip about are SP and the Police. I've seen the others multiple times. The only way I will most definitely buy a ticket would be if Interpol shows up. It'd also have to be under $125 for a ticket since well, I refuse to pay over $50 for any of those bands except the Police.... as a "newcomer" or thereabouts to this area i can't fathom any kind of festival in the first place but Interpol + either the Police or SP will drag me out if it's under a week's worth of work money wise.

Hahahaha.
why does everybody seem to hate this festival so much?
I think 311 is a mistake. That choice almost can't be defended.
But Velvet Revolver is a really respectable band. They might not be my favorite band, but they are still well received in the type of music they play. I mean, its a band made up of members of STP and Guns n Roses. As bad as you think they might be, no band consisting of those people can actually be THAT BAD.
I think too many people are under the impression that this is some kind of Indie Festival. It's not.  It's a music festival made up of styles from all genres of rock.  If you want an Indie festival, I suggest you go check the flyers posted at your local coffee house.
I will agree that as of right now, the Festival last year looks to be better then this year. But that is going to happen. V-Fest is a festival made up of the hottest bands that have new albums coming out. Last summer had a really good string of bands putting out new albums.  This summer, doesnt seem to be as strong. So of course the Festival MIGHT not be as strong.
But damn, its a killer Festival in a area that isn't exactly known for being the hot bed of music. It still features one of the GREATEST punk bands ever, one of the BEST bands of the 90's, and one of the best bands ever/hottest tour of the summer. Along with a lot of bands that will at least be fun to hear. Just be thankful that this Festival is coming to such a HORRIBLE music area to begin with, and hope they bring it around next year too.

Seth, just face it. You love to read us bitching as much as we all love to bitch.    :p

To be honest, for a variety of reasons, I doubt that I can make it this year regardless of who plays and what it costs. But that's just me; 1 measly potential ticket. Nothing whatsoever against anything involving the festival. Purely my personal life circumstances, schedules, etc.. Then again, by then, who knows. Either way, because of that, I'm actually hoping that it's full of bands that a lot of people what to see except for me. That way I won't anquish over missing whomever.

I don't have the inside track of what everything costs so it's a bit difficult for me to see how good the price may be. Though it looks about right from what I can tell.

With all that said, I have to admit that I am very proud that the world famous V Fest is being held in Baltimore. We finally got a music festival in our neck of the woods and it's a good one. I want it all to succeed and hoping that as things are worked out, bands that the locals like get booked. Something to make everyone happy. Hopefully, by next year, I'll be able to take the V Fest weekend for myself and it will be something I can afford with bands that I want to see. In the meantime, I'm just hoping everything takes off without a hitch and it proves to be loads of fun for all. I'll settle for my virtual festival high for now and keep my bitching to a minimum.

"Are You Normal?" by NAD still gets regular play. Really, really great stuff. Especially the songs "Walking Through Syrup", "Intact", "Who Goes First?" and "Tantrum". And the single that came out last year ("Hibernation") is one of their best songs. I play that for people that never heard Ned's and they ALWAYS ask what it is because it catches their ear.

Ok, I figured out Bad Brains and The Police but you haven't drunk the Kool-Aid to think that The Smashing Pumpkins were "one of the BEST bands of the 90's" were you!?!?  For what "1979?"   "Disarm?"  Please!  You've got to be kidding!  I'll give them "Gish."  That was a great album.  But anything after that is a megalomaniac believing his own hype.  Enough people told Billy Corgan he was a genius and "the spokesman of his generation" after Cobain that he actually believed it.  How can you take him seriously after "Machina"...Zwan...the solo album....his book of poetry?!?!!  What a pompous ass he is.

Plus, it's not even the original line-up!  It's Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlain and a bunch of hired guns.  It's as much "Smashing Pumpkins" as the band Axl Rose sings with now is "Guns N Roses."  What aren't they just billed at V-fest as Zwan II?

Nostalgia for "great" bands that you "missed" in the 1990's because you were too young or didn't realize how "legendary" they were is a very dangerous affliction.  Don't waste your money or time.  Nostalgia is evil.

my guess is if you look at who's in the new SP, it'd be more of a billy corgan solo tour part 2 than a zwan II.

Smashing Pumpkins were unquestionably one of the great bands of the early-90's.  If they quit in '94 they'd be much poorer, but they'd remain revered by many.

"I was there" in Fall '91 when Gish was cooler than Nevermind, Ten and the other superstars of the era.  Its hard to appreciate now, but the band and Billy Corgan had an aura - they were like a self-contained artistic commune separate from everyone else.  Produced by Butch Vig (like Nirvana of course) but they were the band that remained independant - on Caroline Records - when everyone else was "selling out."  They mixed the romanticism of shoegaze w/ the intensity of the grunge scene and the result was explosive.

They played the State Theatre in Detroit in Fall 91 on that great tour w/ RHCP and Pearl Jam.  Everyone was stellar that night but SP stole the show.  They were ferocious, yet romantic, and the crowd was completely out of control.

The following summer their song on the Singles soundtrack was fantastic.  Every song on there was great - but SP felt like they were on a different plane.

Anticipation was huge for the Gish follow-up and they delivered.  Then saw them in fall 93 in Detroit, w/ Swervedriver opening and they were at the peak of their powers.  They slayed all.

And then they made a lot of money but lost the plot.  Saw them in an arena on the MCATIS tour and it truly sucked.  The wheels were off.

Now Corgan has an opportunity to redeem the legacy and reclaim past glory - but again he blew it.  The key to the SP was the Yin/Yang b/w Corgan/Chamberlain and D'arcy/Iha.  It was chemistry and created that romantic/ferocious mix.  Without them involved this is not the Smashing Pumpkins anymore than the Pixies could exist without Kim Deal.

So once again, to harken back to the early 90's, I give Billy Corgan the gas face.

I sae the same tour, and they sucked. Laughably bad. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe it was because they were playing a hockey arena with bad sound.

my guess is if you look at who's in the new SP, it'd be more of a billy corgan solo tour part 2 than a zwan II. [/b]
I think my biggest frustration with this critique and expecation of the new version of the Pumpkins is that nobody takes into consideration INTENT, which is probably the most important factor in what the new band will sound like.  It won't be a Zwan record or a Billy Corgan solo record - because it isn't intended to be.  It is intended to be a Smashing Pumpkins album.  That intent makes all the difference in the world.

Take other artists who have multiple projects or different bands - all of them will tell you that when they write songs, they automatically know where it is intended to go, whether it be a solo project or a side project or to their main efforts.

So I don't think the new Smashing Pumpkins record will sound a thing like Zwan.  I don't think it'll sound a thing like the Future Embrace.  I don't even think it'll sound like any other Smashing Pumpkins record.  That's my favorite thing about the Pumpkins - no two records sound alike.  And I like all of them for that fact - they're different.  They have different sounds, different instrumentations, different emotions.  Discard that as a runaway ego if you want.  I'd rather embrace it as a band unafraid to reinvent itself from album to album.

So as a fan, I'm excited.  And I'm looking forward to seeing the new lineup and hearing the new record, no matter who is in the band.  Because ultimately, the Pumpkins was about Billy Corgan - for better or for worse.

Saw this show at Penn St. and the Smashing Pumpkins were booed offstage.  I didn't think they were bad, but I've never been a huge fan.  That night, the lead singer was being a bit too dramatic with his between-songs talk and people got annoyed.

Last year every band got roughly and hour. Headliners got close to90 minutes, The Who and Chili Peppers went over their set times, duh.

Most DJs had longer sets, that's because Tiesto bailed last minute.

This year through 2 stages and the tent I imagine the same set times.

I hate to bring this up if it has already been discussed, but this thread is very long. Do you guys think there will still be single day passes available when they go on sale? I am terrified of them selling out 2 day passes before the 1 days go on sale, but I really don't want to go the first day because it's so darn expensive and the bands I really want to see are on day 2. Should I chance it?
Title: Re: V Fest
Post by: sweetcell on May 03, 2007, 08:45:00 pm
my prediction: there will indeed be one-day passes available on may 19, but they will sell out quickly and afterwards there will still be 2-day passes left.  so my opinion - completely unfounded - is that you're OK to wait, but you'll want to buy your one-day pass the second they go on sale.

I hate how it is always a dance "tent"...meaning by the end of the day, it is always so stank and hot inside it is hardly enjoyable.  According to the Buzzlife people there will be some full band sets and the shout outx4 and CSS will be playing the tent as well

Street parking will be severely limited since it is a residential neighborhood.

Some of the neighbors will use this as an opportunity to make a little money by allowing you to park on their lawns, in their driveways or wherever they have to offer. It won't be cheap but it's an option. Just be forewarned that, occasionally, some area entrepreneur will 'appear' to be the owner of the spot but will instead be some shyster taking your money for someone else's property. What happens in that case is purely at the good will, or not, of the owner.

Also, generally speaking, if you choose to park and bus, cab, walk it, east is usually safer than west. The problem with that direction though is that you will find too much hospital and park land to find much in the way of parking. West of the track gets really sketchy, more urban and still tight with parking though being a big day at the track, I would expect much more foot traffic and police prescence (no pun intended). Also, north (across Northern Parkway) is probably better than going south. Either way, it's not going to be a picnic outside of the track.

You can always study the MTA website (Google MTA + Baltimore) to find public transportation options. You can always take a Park and Ride and unlike the DC Metro, parking at their lots is free. The biggest problem is that Baltimore area public transportation totally sucks and is almost non-existent. The real trick will be finding what might go to Pimlico. Look for an east/west line along Northern Parkway if the Metro or Light Rail doesn't do it, which either may well not. If I'm up for it sometime, maybe I'll try to find some suggetions later.

If you opt for the Metro, you might want to drive out to Ownings Mills (NW of Baltimore City) and use their Park and Ride. Or if you opt for the Light Rail, go out to Timonium or Hunt Valley (directly N of Baltimore and north of Towson) and use their Park and Ride. I just don't know the relationship of either in regards to Pimlico. However, if you opt for either via downtown Baltimore, you will most likely have to pay all day to park your car in a private lot or garage. I know it seems counter-intuitive for those coming up from the DC area to drive up further north by a few miles but may well be your ideal option.

Seth, I plan to by my ticket this week when I'm at the club. If I don't buy parking now (because I plan to metro in) but my plans change down the road, can I buy parking seperate at a later date at the box office?

Also, am I correct it's 1 pass/car not per person?

I got mine on Wednesday, 206$ in total.

We'll see if it's worth it.

premium parking will definitely sell out, but there are plenty of options beyond that...again, check the festival site

there will be additions in lieu of Chris Cornell

i think alice in chains might play the fest because they will be touring in august with velvet revolver and playing the virgin music fest will just be the reason they wont play at merriweather or nissan pavilion

Hey Seth,

based on previous post, with copious interrogation marks: are you bull930?

 apologies for any redundancy  :)

Based upon the boardie reviews, I think the headliners would object.

Great point, but I am still worked up over the show from Friday night. I would love to share that experience with a huge festival crowd.

no, it's not... i was trying to figure out where VFest is positioning itself.   it's not a hipster/indie fest, at least not on the whole.  it's not a classic rock fest.  it's not a frat-rock fest (although it might be heaviest on this genre).  it's not a hard-rock fest.  as far as i can tell, the most specific and distinctive thing it has going for it is the dance tent - but it's not a dance fest, and these acts aren't on the main stage so that's not the main draw.  my conclusion: VFest is a something-for-everyone festival, where there are enough big names to draw everyone in and enough quality to (most probably) keep everyone entertained.

but that's just me putting on my marketing hat.  thoughts?

I really wanted to see Chris Cornell (I'm sure I'm the only one on here), but EITS is a great replacement.
