Okay, so most of you are probably going to see Cooper Temple Clause, The Church or Exit Clov this Friday night. Here's yet another option for an already overcrowded March 5th evening:
If you want to hear the very best in new, left-of-center independent pop music from the U.K. and elsewhere around the world before it gets released in the U.S., definitely check out "We Fought the Big One" this Friday night, March 5th at the Marx Cafe (3203 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW). "We Fought..." is a new indie music night hosted by local music obsessives turned DJs Rick Taylor, aka DJ Trickster, and Brandon Grover, aka DJ Five-Year-Plan. The idea behind this new monthly event is to have a cool place where music fans can go to hang out, have a drink, and listen to music they may not have heard before. But if the idea of an "all-new music only" night is a bit intimidating---fear not. In addition to spinning a healthy dose of A+ import-only selections, Trickster & Five-Year-Plan will play the best in recent domestically-released music, as well as a generous helping of ace bands from the 80s and 90s, highlighting artists and songs that are truly exceptional yet never got the recognition they deserved. Best of all, the event is free all night long and runs from 10pm-3am, so it's ideal for a post-show or post-date nightcap if you've already made plans.
Stylistically, the music will be as varied as the bar's drink menu, with forays into indie electronic (we refuse to call it IDM, damnit!), guitar jangle pop, post-punk, post-rock, and shoegaze to simply name a few.
And lastly, Trickster and Five-Year-Plan would like to extend the most generous of thank yous to anyone who comes out to see them or tells their friends about "The Big One" as they are both trying desperately to convince the owner of the Marx Cafe that there is an audience out there for this kind of night. Incidently, there will not be another "Big One" if there is not enough support this Friday (ouch!). The battle rages on...
