This show will complete my October Swedish trifecta.  If the Shout Out Louds even come close to the bar set by the Hives and Jens Lekman, I'll be happy.

 SHOUT OUT LOUDS at the Mod Club Rating: NN
 
 No matter how you cut it, boring songs make for a boring show. That left Sweden's Shout Out Louds at a considerable disadvantage Monday night, since their new record is about as bland as you can get.
 
 Still, the Mod Club crowd seemed pleased with the new songs that made up most of the set, though tracks like The Comeback and Please Please Please, off their much better first record, got a more enthusiastic reception. The band members were far too cutesy for a rock show, bopping their heads as they played their inoffensive pop.
 
 And what's with Bebban Stenborg , the quiet keyboardist? The one song she sang was a disaster; she looked like she'd rather be anywhere but Toronto.

This show was the definition of "okay."  The Shout Out Louds were cute and endearing - as most non death-metal affiliated Scandinavians are - and the show was better than the albums; but take away the song writing skill of Lekman and the performance prowess of the Hives, and it's destined to be a little disappointing.

I concur, it got off to kinda of a rough start but hit a bit of stride in the middle but began to lag a again.  While, I didn't in general mind the songs that sounded like you know who, when they are strung together it gets a bit tedious.  They needed to mix it up a bit or tone some of the obvious bits down.  I did hear some Lloyd Cole and The Commotions influences peeking through.  When they were on it was nice, like the last song where they threw in a bit of "Train In Vain".  Might be willing to give them another chance if they get a third record under their belts...

It wasn't flawless, and the new songs aren't as exciting as most of their first album, but I still had a lot of fun, and despite four hours of sleep, don't regret staying up to see them.
