Delgados Sunday
« on: November 12, 2004, 01:52:00 pm »
Alas, my few cohorts for the Stella Comedy Tour show at the State Theater on Sunday have cancelled on me.

So, anyone planning on the Delgados show at Black Cat Sunday?

I have the new album, but haven't listened to it yet...that's one mission for this weekend.

If I'm in town, which looks doubtful, I am absolutely at this show. Kinda pissed I probably won't be there. The new album isn't as good as Hate, but it's alright.

I'll probably be there.... I'm actually not all that familiar with them, but I downloaded some of their songs (legitimately) and really liked what I heard.

they went on at 10.45 and played for an hour and a half. lots of stuff off the new album that sounds quite good. they had alan, and i can't remember the name of the other guy, alternating between strings and keyboards. nice touch, since last tour emma and alun decided to leave the guys back in scotland. the addition of the strings really brings a richness to a lot of the songs. it was sparse when i got there at 10.30 but it seemed like the crowd filled in nicely during their set. maybe half full?

i briefly saw markie and pollard there so perhaps they can fill you in with more details. i had to dart in and dart out. i have the set list at home if anyone would like it posted. i can do it when i get home tonight.

It was good, not as crisp sounding as the other 2 times they were here, but still very good.

The opener was also very good IMHO (others thought it sounded a bit much like an Irish Pub performer), made me put the Crooked Fingers albums I have back on the ipod, and I am enjoying them much more after seeing the songs live.

i'll agree with you. what was up with the bass drum vibrating your body for the first 4 songs?

I know Pollard disagrees, but I thought they were much better this time. The additons of strings and keys on many of the songs made them much fuller, which IMHO is better than the bare-bones rock set-up they had last time. The bass was too high early in the set, but it was corrected. I thought the rearranged song at the end, forget the name though it is off Hate, was great. And Crooked Fingers sounded really good, might try to purchase me some of that....

If the song you are referring to was the last one, I believe it was "Child Killers" but they played No Danger near the end as well.  I cant really remember now that I think about it.  And I didnt think the last show was way better or anything, I just thought that the sound was uneven last night at time and not just the bass problem at the beginning.  Still, I will always compare it to the first time they were here for Hate, because the string section was perfect.

As for Crooked Fingers, I would suggest Red Devil Dawn, a few of the songs last night are off of that, although, as he said, there will be a new one in a few months.

I think the one I liked was No Danger... but not sure, have to give Hate a listen when i get home. I never remember song names anymore. I agree that the first time was by far the best, the strings were amazing...

Thanks for the crooked fingers advice... some of those songs were really beautiful, made me wish I could hear them with a full band.
