Ladytron - thoughts?

Overall a good show but something was definitely missing. Were they having fun playing music live? I couldn't really tell.

Agree in that I thought the show was good but not great. One of those bands who come off better recorded than live but still a fun night. They were off key for a lot of the songs too. Didn't even recognize one of the songs until they got to the main chorus towards the end of the song because it was so off. Even then, I wouldn't have if I didn't recognize the lyrics.
 
 After last night, I cannot wait until smoking is banned in clubs and bars!!! Ended up suffering all day with a nasty cigarette hangover. It's just like an alcohol hangover but without the fun of a good buzz. Only had one beer and that was before the show and didn't even get a buzz from that. Even then, that had nothing to do with it. It's all those damned smokers who insist on smoking in tight crowds and I had a few of them next to me chain smoking all night. Disgusting!

On top of their image, I think they were a little apprehensive at first, due to the fact that their previous show wasn't so well received.  However, if you noticed, towards the end, they started to loosen up.  After the show, all of them were extremely friendly.  
 
 In any event, I really enjoyed myself;  couldn't think of a better way to spend a friday.

I think the worst thing about Ladytron was the mix. I understand that it is hard to mix like 30 synthesizers but still some were really loud and others nonexistent. When you have that much bass frequency with such loud drums you lose so much musical information in the mids soâ?¦
 
 Other than that I loved it. When I see a band that plays a song called Cracked LCD I donâ??t really expect them to be rocking the audience. This is a synth band. They donâ??t rock. I mean Mira is a Bulgarian model with a doctorate in genetics from Oxford who also DJs and can physically repair her own synths. That pretty much fills my check list of most awesome possible girl, so I can pretty much forgive her not dancing. Also I kind of liked Helenaâ??s thing when she put her fist on her hips like she was scolding her children.
 
 I was really hoping that I was going to see a really eccentric, 100% euro band and that is exactly what I got. The French Kicks were just the awesome topping on the cake even if it was a strange line up.
 
 My summary of the show:  Female bass player wearing black evening dress picking distorted bass. I mean, come on.

I thought it was a good show, overall. There was some kind of feedback going on from time to time, but their overall sound and style got communicated to the audience, IMO.
 
 I've seen videos of Ladytron playing live and they're never animated, really. Most of the time they just stand there and play their synths.
 
 Also, we're talking about a somewhat minimal "electroclash" band - not Motley Crue. There's not going to be any strippers, motorcycles and lead singers doing acrobatics all over the stage.

I'm not sure what I expected from the show, because I knew going in that Ladytron aren't exactly wild performers. But neither were Mogwai or Stereolab (circa 1997), and those shows blew me away. Ladytron, alas, did not. I enjoyed it, it was good to hear the songs, but it seemed like they just got up there, played the songs, and left. It didn't help that it was a late show after a long day, and that the night before, Gogol Bordello had absolutely ripped shit up.
 
 And damn, how is it that French Kicks still gets work? I can find something to like in almost any band, but their appeal eludes me completely.

agreed completely! i saw them in new york on saturday night. i knew i wouldnt get the most entertaining show, but i guess i had expected a bit more. and that also goes for the french kicks.
 
 i was surprised that the french kicks didnt work the crowd at all. they never once even mentioned their name, actually i dont think they said a word in the 40 mins i saw of the set. a bit disappointed!
 
 ladytron, well that was pretty underwhelming. although i will say after the encore they did pick it up. both the gals were dancing up a storm on the stage, fists punching into the air, and having a great time. the crowd responded in fashion, dancing even more. so the end was good, the beginning - well not so good. i was glad to finally see them, but im def. in no hurry to see them again. i had wondered if maybe they were a bit tired from the late night on friday, but i realized after reading this, its just them.

Yeah, that too. You could barely hear the vocals. I thought they would turn the mics up once they started singing and realized they were barely audible but they didn't.
 
 Visually, it was exactly as I expected and hoped. Their music isn't the type for them to jump around to. Doubt I would have liked it if they did. It was purely the sound itself that didn't live up to my expectations or desires.
 
 Anyone know who the DJ was? Sounded like Ladytron may have controlled the music between French Kicks and Ladytron. We were really enjoying several of the cuts.

Whoever djed that night did a great job. I can't believe I heard "Christine" by the House of Love at the 9:30 Club! And Felt's "Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow"! Also, lots and lots of Wire. Any idea who spun? Kosmo, are you the guy responsible for such greatness?

Wish I could say it was me... Wanted to DJ it but was beaten to the punch. Sounds like the band might have been behind it...
 
 I was along with GGW over at the Black Cat seeing just how long Grohl's coattails were and as evidenced by 1/3 full club not very long.  And no Grohl didn't appear... Taylor Hawkins & Coattail Riders is essential the bar band version of the Foo's just four guys out on Friday having fun playing together with OK songs.  
 
 They lost serious style points for a  cover of "Hotel California" the second worst song ever written, "American Pie" being first. Crank out some Thin Lizzy if you need to flex the dual lead guitar stchick.
 
 Driveblind have been on my radar for awhile but have clearily spent too much on their record in LA. Once described as Whoesque, they have watered down those influences with that pop anthemic sound in vogue at the moment. Maybe they'll ditch the gloss when their record screws them over...
