noise against the fascist motel industry
« on: December 19, 2004, 10:26:00 pm »
i got my ticket for the jan. 20 show at black cat . . . and then i realized it was on the same day that satan, i mean mr. bush, is being made president of the usa.  i live not within driving (and then back again) distance of the district, so i made my normal attempt to get a hotel for a show.  hotels are all booked, and if you can get a room through hotels.com or whatever, they are 5000 times the normal price.  a room at one place, which is normally $99 ($120 the max) is $600-800 a room on that night.  how is it that price gouging after a hurricane is illegal, but this is not??

i don't know why i'm complaining; that never gets one anywhere in this country.  do the everyday d.c'ers feel i'm going to have a horrible drive in for that show, with the town's security tighter than j'lo's weave??  should i just give up?  thurston is worth the pain.

If you're looking to stay in downtown DC, then yeah, prices are going to be very high. You're likely better off extending your search to include the close-in areas just outside DC (Silver Spring, Arlington, etc.).

As long as you can avoid driving downtown, it shouldn't be a problem beyond the various street closings. The federal government (and private businesses that follow the government's leave policies) will be closed that day.

yeah Black Cat is like three blocks from the Metro, so you could metro it to the club from any cheap suburban hotel.

plus, i have to deal with all the doom sayers, who are trying to convince me that i don't want to be anywhere near dc near the election; or on metro.  they are positive that "something" is going to happen, and that i should just stay away.

and that the metro in question which is close to the black cat, isn't really somewhere you wanting to be walking, by yourself, at night.  but i've driven and parked near the club, and didn't think it was THAT bad.

and by the way, Natas is the only one who rules.

The metro is SO close to the club, and a whole slew of people will be walking there when the show is over along with you.  That shouldn't be a worry (and I'll bet they extend metro hours due to the inauguration, which is a good thing for you so you don't have to miss any of the show to get to the green line in time for whatever connection you might need to make).

But, as Doom mentioned, it'll actually be a good day for driving in DC away from downtown -- businesses are closed, Dems (which are plentiful in DC) will be bummed, and Reps will be drunk and taking taxis between swanky places far away from the Black Cat.

Find a gay rights supporter and tell them your thoughts on gays.  Maybe they'll let you stay the night.
