Seth Quoted in ROLLING STONE re "Led Zeppelin"
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:50:00 am »
Seth states the obvious, in last paragraph of RS entry that thankfully tells us that even Jimmy Page may think it's not Zep without Robert Plant.

Last year's Led Zeppelin reunion concert wasn't the end for Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham â?? but it looks like it was for Robert Plant. The three musicians have been holding rehearsals with singers including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler (it didn't go well, one source has heard) and possibly Myles Kennedy, lead singer of Alter Bridge (who has covered Zep songs onstage and has a formidable vocal range). But Page wants to make one thing clear about the new project. "Whatever this is, it is not Led Zeppelin," says a rep for Page's management company, QPrime. "Not without the involvement of Robert Plant."

Plant, who just finished a tour with Alison Krauss, has insisted that he has little interest in an extended Zep reunion: "The whole idea of being on a cavalcade of merciless repetition is not what it's all about," he said just before last year's reunion show. Added Jones last month, "We really want to do something, and Robert doesn't want to do this, at least for the moment. He really doesn't want to make loud music anymore. We do."

Page's rep emphasized that no decisions have been made on a singer, and Kennedy's manager, Paul Geary, declined to comment on a report that he is the front-runner. "Nothing is set," Geary's assistant said. The trio have suggested that the new project â?? whatever it's called â?? would both tour and record new music. "It's got to be right," Jones said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but we've got to have everybody on board. . . . What we've done so far sounds absolutely fantastic."

Without Plant or the Led Zeppelin name, the commercial prospects for the project are unclear. One concert-industry source said the tour would do "surprisingly well. I mean, Journey came back bigger than life with a no-name." But Seth Hurwitz, co-owner of Washington, D.C., concert-promotion firm I.M.P., says, "With Robert Plant, it would be as huge as people think, as huge as huge could be. Without him, I don't know."

Jokes aside, there's one man for the job - Jack White.

Chris Cornell.  I like the Jack White idea too.

Why not find a lead singer via a reality tv show?

I'm with Kosmo, Terry Reid...but don't go by the Led Zepplin moniker. We all know it's not; it's what's left of the band. Just get together and make some really good music under another name and throw in a healthy dose of Zepplin songs and all should be well; otherwise, it's nothing but a half a blimp.

I know! How about David Coverdale? Just kidding! Back in the early 90s when Page wanted to work with Plant and well Plant blew him off, supposedly, Page decided to work with Coverdale to make Plant jealous. Obviously, it worked because shortly after the whole Page/Coverdale thing was released, Page got a call from Plant, which was the beginning of the whole Unleaded project that they did back in the mid 90s.

Now talking about real ideas...The idea of Jack White intrigues me. He could do something really interesting with them.

I do love the idea of Chris Cornell, too. The man has a voice that's like a wrecking ball.

Though I don't know who Terry Reid is, I just read about him and I see why Jaguar and Kosmo are suggesting his name. It's a great point honestly.

Maybe they should pull somebody from the metal world, such as Rob Halford from Judas Priest (though I heard his voice isn't as strong as it once was), Bruce Dickenson from Iron Maiden or Dio. All three have incredible vocal ranges. I would suggest Sebastian Bach even but he can be such a drama queen from what I've heard.

I just think the idea of the guy from Alter Bridge singing vocals is quite dull and boring. They need someone with either obvious star power, musicianship or a combination of the two, because let's face it, whatever they end up doing is going to be one hell of a supergroup.

As for the name, I agree that without Plant, they shouldn't call themselves Led Zeplin. As for playing Led Zeplin songs live, that should totally happen. People would come out to see the band do these songs even if Plant isn't with them. I know that depending who is the vocalist, my dad and I would go see this in a heartbeat.
