Smithereens question
« on: January 06, 2004, 02:00:00 pm »
I see that the Smithereens are playing Baltimore again on Jan 31.

I know they played recently, but I couldn't go.  Any feedback on that show?  Just wondering what the current incarnation is up to, and if it's how I should spend a Saturday night.

FYI, I loved the Smithereens in the day, and still listen to "11."

Especialy for You was the best album

 blood and Roses
 Behind the Wall of Sleep
 In a Lonely Place
 Strangers when we meet
 Cigarette

It was pretty much downhill from there

I thought they were pretty overrated back in the day; now it seems like they would just be bad trivia. Bland bar band fare, kind of like Billy Vera and the Beaters, or Eddie and the Cruisers.

I liked "Green Thoughts" a lot too, but I admit I lost interest after that one.  Caught them at the Bayou once and they were darn good.  That was about 100 years ago though.

That's funny, because the second song on the latest Pernice Brothers album is a dead ringer for a Smithereens song (the name of which escapes me at the moment).

well not many bands can claim the same membership for as long as the smithereens...  i'll agree that "especially for you" from beginning to finish is a great record.  saw them perform it in it's entirety at the bayou once.  after that it was pretty hit or miss, each record had a few stellar tracks and lots of duds.  their "singles" stand the test of time and dinizio voice is still in tact.

when they played here last year they positively smoked...too bad no one turned out for the show. I saw them many times back in the '80s and always thought they were a good live band, regardless of how I felt about their albums...I agree that Especially For You was their high point. But they can still rock, and I'd definitely go see them again, just don't think we can afford to book 'em here. From what I'm told, they still do well at the State Theater.

I went to the show last year at the 9:30 Club. I dont know much about them except the obvious songs and i just went just to say that i saw them. I have to say that i thought they put on a really good show. Like twangirl said, the crowd was very small......i'd say less then 100 maybe. But they were still worth seeing.

Smithereens are playing ANNAPOLIS at the Ram's Head on Jan. 31st! 6:30 & 9:30 p.m. shows.
35 clams is a bit too rich for my tastes considering you could end up behind one of those damn pillars that block your view or even all the way to the side of the stage.Haven't seen these guys since they did a show at my old college with The Beat Farmers back in the day! Who knows what they sound like now?! "Blown To Smithereens" is a good compilation of the "hits". That's not a bad starting or ending point.

Hey, those are all the songs I listen to!  I must have been thinking of another album -- I'll bet these days I'm listening to a greatest hits CD.

Looked it up online -- I listen to those two albums - 11 and Especially for You.  I like 'em both.

I'm sorry I missed them last year....I was out of town or something like that.  I remember planning to go then being bummed I had to skip it.

So maybe I'll hit the ramshead show....

 Thanks, twangirl.

Sorry, yes....

It's the name of the Smithereens' song that escapes me.  I'll find it for you.

Dammit, $35 is a LOT.  I won't get anyone to go with me.     :(

I saw them at Irving Plaza in the late 80s.  Fantabulous.
