Clear Channel unviels "Format Lab"
« on: April 24, 2006, 02:00:00 pm »
Yup, the evil empire is programming 75 new stations...apparently to sell them to other companies to broadcast in HD Radio and other places...

  Format Lab

 Here are the rock formats:

  Rock - Al's Music Mart (CH 710)
We've all seen it...that cheesy record store commercial on late night cable tv. Meet Al. If you didn't know, Al's Music Mart is second to none when it comes to selection, and, most importantly, personality. This Channel is set within the confines of Al's Music Mart, as if you were actually in the store, you hear all that goes on, from the overhead PA problems to the toilets overflowing, Al's is quite an interesting place to be! Enjoy a WIDE variety of music from the 60's thru today! With personality and music to boot...why wouldn't you visit Al's Music Mart - We Got it All! Collective Soul, Alanis Morrisette, Elton John, Eagles.

Rock - The Alternative (CH 702)
Popular Alternative rock hit songs, new releases and other stuff. Your mother has never accused you of following the crowd. In fact, she wishes you would get rid of that green hair dye already. But you keep it. Because you love Billie Joe. And Eddie Veder. And Beck. And even Brandon Flowers. And because you aren't going to follow the crowd - you'll take The Alternative. Jet, Green Day, U2, Linkin Park, Beck, Killers, Pearl Jam, Nickelback.

Rock - Blue Monkey Saloon (CH 706)
Full spectrum Rock blending hits from 70s to today. Want a place where you can always rely on hearing the best in new and classic rock? Want a place where your favorite artists get intimate with you and a cold beer? Pull up a stool, cause you'll get all the above at the Blue Monkey Saloon. Nickelback, Green Day, Billy Idol, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, U2, Queen, Metallica, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Ozzie Osbourne.

Rock - RadioRadio Classic Alternative (CH 703)
First generation alternative from the 70s to the 80s. Even if your parents weren't born in England, you still consider your self first generation - First Generation Alternative, that is. You were there when it started, and you're proud to own the Stiff Records box set. The Cure, Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Clash, The Replacements, Elvis Costello.

Rock - Classic Rock Garage (CH 708)
Classic Rock thtat rocks from the 80's, 70's and 60's. When the music mattered. When the guitar ruled. When rock was king. Soâ?¦â?¦..who was better, Clapton or Page? Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn, AC/DC.

  Rock - Dank (CH 715)
Hip-Hop and Rock ALL rolled up into one big spliff. Some combinations are simply meant to be: Burgers and Fries, Beers and Wings and especially Hip Hop and Rock. It's dark, it's edgy, it beats and it rocks. It's dank. Trapt, Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, Limp Bizkit, Jay-Z, Kanye West.

Rock - Full Metal Racket (CH 716)
Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. Hey Metalheads, Headbangers, and Moshers - time to rock out to the Heavy Metal we came to be identified with. Unabashed. Uncut. Unreal. Just the way we like it. Guns 'n Roses, Tool, Motley Crue, Slipknot, Megadeth.

Rock - New! Alternative (CH 701)
All new releases in Alternative format - featuring the newest songs and artist interviews. No one busts your balls over not having new music. At least not if you listen to NEW! Alternative. Know about the latest songs from your newest alternative acts before that pretentious indie snot asks if you've heard the latest NIN song. Matisyahu, Hard Fi, Nightmare of You, Sia, Nine Inch Nails.

Rock - New! Rock (CH 704)
All new releases in Rock format - featuring the newest songs and artist interviews. You can never have enough songs on the iPod nor can you keep up with the latest releases, those artists that are on the cutting edge. We got the sounds you'll make room for in your iPod, until the next newbie comes along. HIM, Theory of a Deadman, Nine Inch Nails, Shinedown, Sevendust, Mudvayne.

  Rock - Nitro (CH 705)
Popular Active rock hit songs, new releases and recent oldies. Active Rock is not a genre. It's a fact. You might be able to sit there quietly at your desk and stream the latest from Korn, Metallica and Mudvayne, but on the inside you're starring in your own mosh pit. If Nitro were a drink, it would have twice as much caffeine as your regular jolt. Korn, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Mudvayne, System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold.

Rock - Rock at Random (CH 711)
Eclectic blend of popular Rock songs from the 60s to today. Five decades of rock eclectically programmed for you so you don't have to hear that same old playlist everyday. It's like you borrowed a better version of your mp3 player and have it on random all day. Only your favorites, all the time. Including a few you you might have forgotten about - but we'll play them to remind you. Matchbox 20, Bob Seger, Gin Blossoms, U2, Coldplay, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Rock - Rock On (CH 709)
Pop rock and Rock hits from the 80's, 70's and 60's - without the edge. They don't make 'em like they used to. That's why these are classic hits. No steroids or mind altering drugs needed to Rock On. Beatles, The Cars, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, James Taylor, America.

Rock - The Brew (CH 707)
All 80's Classic Rock. It feels like the first time, so pour some sugar on me cuz I love rock'n roll. Go on. Try it. It's amazing how many of these 80s song titles will fit together to form the most amusing sentences - while also reminding us of our favorite songs and why we love them. My best friend's girl is running like the shadows of the night into open arms. See!! It's almost as fun as listening! Hit me with your best shot! Def Leppard, Journey, Joan Jett, Whitesnake, Pat Benetar, Cheap Trick, Foreigner.

Rock - The GiG (CH 1012)
Live cuts from popular Rock Acts. Couldn't get that ticket to the sold out Stones concert? Wondering what it sounded like? Got a craving to hear McCartney when he played MSG? Keep it here on "The Gig". Aerosmith, U2, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Neil Young.

Rock - The Music Summit (CH 712)
Spectrally broad mix of rock, covering many decades and many styles. You will never stop shopping at the indie record store no matter how many punk kids try to tell you what rock really is. You know what rock is, and your enormous record collection proves it. So does the fact that you're still finding new artists to love and enjoy. Bonnie Raitt, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Jamie Cullum, Bob Marley, U2, John Mayer, Van Morrison, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Champan, Steely Dan.

Rock - Undies Indie Rock (CH 714)
"Undies. Its underground, and independent. Indie and college rock. Itâ??s like college radio....without the dead air. Arcade Fire, Cat Power, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie"

Rock - Vinyl Vineyard (CH 713)
The Vinyl Vineyard - where the world's finest rock is still grown was created in the spirit of early FM radio. A true "Album Oriented" rock platform, (the basis for today's AAA format), presented in the same mood and ambience that made FM radio stand out from the screaming over-energized AM band. This AOR for HD indulges in not only quality album rock from the late 60's and 70's, but also compatible album based music recorded within the last 25 years. The Vineyard is a "vibe" designed primarily for upper-demo early adopters of new technology that feel FM radio has forgotten its roots to be deep and explore.

The only one which sounds remotely interesting... but who wants to bet you'll never hear Love, Big Star, Flaming Groovies, Zombies or the Raspberries on it...

Going solely by that write up, and completely putting all of my Clear Crap biases aside    , it looks like they did a fairly decent job with breaking things down to eras and dates. But there is one thing that they seemed to have not mentioned and exactly where I suspect they will completely blow it. That's involving numbers of cuts. Will we hear the same very limited amount of selections over and over again? Knowing Clear Crap, probably. In fact, reading those descriptions carefully, that's exactly how it sounds it will be programmed.

Seems they kind of got a clue but only half a clue. Still a whole lot of holes but it might be a mini improvement but I'm not counting on any chickens. Too many cracked eggs in that lot.

Based on their previous track record, I have no reason whatsoever to trust Clear Channel. They will use this programming to further extort from musicians and bully them into doing what is financially best for CC. I think the demise of the current alternative radio format is 90% due to CC (and 10% due to stupidity of a public willing to consume this kind of crap).

I'll stick with Sirius and CBC3/Left of Centre.

I listened to the Undies station:
Rock - Undies Indie Rock (CH 714)
"Undies. Its underground, and independent. Indie and college rock. Itâ??s like college radio....without the dead air. Arcade Fire, Cat Power, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie"

And it was not great, but a lot better than XM's college station, XMU. It's sad when Clear Channel can best you in programming...
