It's official "Latino Walk-Off Day" or something to that effect.
I don't think it's going to turn out like organizers are hoping. There's already a siege-mentality percolating in the collective American consciousness. Tomorrow we'll all see that the barbarians aren't just at the gate, they've already passed through in overwhelming numbers. And it will bring all that paranoia right up to the surface.
I seem to remember a country in northern Europe that had some economic problems back in the 30's, and the politicians targeted a very visible minority group...
Of course, the argument that we need immigrants to fuel our economy is only half-true. We only need them to do tasks that we're too lazy to get on top of, or to create cheap goods that break and then necessitate the need to buy more cheap goods that break and then...
Throw them out? Hah! I think that you'll find that they can breed faster than you can get them through the deportation hearings.
Fences? Only two successful fences come to mind. The Berlin Wall and the Korean DMZ. Both were/are pretty effective, but so expensive and heavily militarized as to be unpractical on the American scale.
I was reading about the Mexican Army. These are the same guys that lost the Southwestern United States in the Mexican-American War waaay back in the 1860's, but still bitch more about territorial loss than, uh, say the Hungarians back in WWI. Nevermind that fact that the US did make reparations. But I digress...
There is a massive Mexican Army presence on their border with (drum roll...) Guatemala. Guatemala is poorer than Mexico and the Mexicans sure as fuck don't want a bunch of poor immigrants coming in or through their country. Of course, they actually shoot the illegals down there.
I guess they don't feel comfortable sharing a border with a Third World nation. It's funny how hypocrisy, like a few rivers, can also flow south to north.
I'm tentatively in support of this "Day Without a _______" trend. My only concern is the relentless focus on Mexicans. Surely there are other groups we collectively fail to properly "appreciate."
Try these on for size....
"Day Without the Morbidly Obese"-- They all stay at home, smug as they tuck into their Ben & Jerry's stockpile. The rest of humanity spins gleefully in circles, their arms outstretched, happy for just one day in a world that's suddenly a lot less crowded.
"Day Without Asian Drivers" -- Sorry, you know the rules. You can park and ride, but you can't get behind the wheel. Then we'll tally up the accident reports and compare the before and after scores.
"Day Without Wannabe Mexican Gangmembers" -- In which dozens ask, "It's almost 11 a.m.! Where the fuck is that weird Filipino guy from the mail room?"
"Day Without Dacronâ?˘ Polyester Blends" -- A sobering day for those who have forgotten how many wonderful outfits incorporate at least some of this space-age "Miracle Fabric."
This protest sign, just viewed on MSNBC, pretty much sums up the whole issue for me:
IN AMERICA- NO IMMIGRANTS, NO PROGRES
I couldn't have sed it better myslfe
