 Sad songs for dirty lovers is great.

Cherry tree is excellent. Too short though, as it's only an EP.
 
 The self-titled is arguably as good as Sad Songs.
 Though they keep the angst in check more.
 
 Cherry Tree serves as an effective sampler of The National's contrasting handiwork. While the band is at its most powerful when they are in an introspective and moody mode they do make infrequent ventures into a noisier realm where the louder bits are made all the more effective by their restrained usage. Like the best suspense, The National proves that anticipation and suggestion can be just as effective as overwhelming force. The band also does a magnificent job of utilizing their secret weapon - Berninger's pleading and gravelly singing. A voice that he often wields like a weapon - an emotional bludgeon.
 
 Cherry Tree contains one repeat song from Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers - a live rendering of "Murder Me Rachel." It is one of the songs from the record that received a smattering of airplay on indie and internet radio. Ironically, it's also the one song that does the poorest job of representing The National. It's hard indie pop that is not at all indicative of the depth and soul typically found throughout The National's catalog.
 
 Throughout the remainder of Cherry Tree however, you'll find a handful of outstanding songs that complement their best work to date: "Wasp Nest", "All The Wine" and "About Today."
 
 If there is a fault to be found on Cherry Tree it's that it is too short at less than 30 minutes. But it was never intended to be more than a place holder as the band is currently preparing a batch of new songs for unveiling on their third full-length record (their first on the Beggars Banquet label) during Spring 2005.
 
 Let the countdown begin for one of next year's most anticipated releases.

I saw a local FOX report after the Nationals played the Mets in an exhibition game, and all five of the players they interviewed after the game were white. What are the odds of that happening randomly?

by white, do you mean english-speaking american?  if you include "white" hispanics, it wouldn't be that random for all the players interviewed to be "white" ...
 
 if you're referring to americans, well, news services usually try to get interviews with people who speak english well, not a racial/ethnic bias, but there just aren't that many african-americans on the nationals
 
 i read a really good article a while back encouraging sammy sosa to only give interviews in spanish because his broken english made him easily mockable and made him sound un-intelligent ... i thought the writer had a very good point ...

I had the sound off, so didn't actually hear what they said, but the five that were interviewed were:
 
 Day, Eischhen, Schneider, Wilkerson, and Church.
 
 I used to listen to a number of post-game Oriole interviews on the radio, and they certainly never limited themselves to those who spoke perfect English.
