Garfunkel Charged With Having Pot
 Jan 22, 12:46 AM EST

 Associated Press

Art Garfunkel, part of the folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel, was charged with having marijuana after police pulled over his limousine for speeding in upstate New York.

Garfunkel, 62, of Manhattan, was caught with a small amount of marijuana in his jacket pocket and was charged with possession of marijuana, a violation, reported the Daily Freeman of Kingston.

Police said Garfunkel was riding alone when a state trooper stopped the limo around 12:20 p.m. Saturday in Hurley, 55 miles southwest of Albany. The trooper smelled marijuana after approaching the vehicle.

State police Capt. Louis Barbaria Jr. said the trooper didn't realize who he arrested until later, although Garfunkel told him he is a celebrity. Barbaria didn't know why Garfunkel was in Ulster County.

Garfunkel was scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28 on the charge, or he could respond by mail or have a lawyer appear for him.

He faces a $100 fine, unless he has had a conviction within the past three years and police did say whether he has.

Garfunkel completed a U.S. concert tour with Paul Simon last fall, their first in 20 years. Simon and Garfunkel, who have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, produced a string of hits in the 1960s, including "The Sounds of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson," "Old Friends" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," before breaking up.

N.Y. Hands Garfunkel Another Pot Charge

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. - Singer Art Garfunkel, who pleaded guilty last year to pot possession in upstate New York, was charged again Sunday after a marijuana cigarette was allegedly found in the ashtray of his car, state police said.

The 63-year-old Garfunkel, who lives in Manhattan, was charged after being pulled over for failing to stop his vehicle at a stop sign, The Daily Freeman of Kingston reported Tuesday.

Upon approaching Garfunkel's car, a trooper noticed a strong odor of marijuana and a subsequent search turned up a joint in the ashtray, the newspaper reported. He was issued a ticket and is due back in Woodstock Town Court on Sept. 22.

In January 2004, Garfunkel was charged with marijuana possession after state police stopped his limousine for speeding in the Ulster County town of Hurley, which is near Woodstock some 55 miles southwest of Albany. During that stop, police found a small amount of pot in Garfunkel's jacket.

The next month, he pleaded guilty and paid $200 in fines.

Garfunkel, who with Paul Simon made up the legendary duo Simon and Garfunkel, produced a string of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, including "The Sounds of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Garfunkel had a solo career in the 1970s, including the hit "All I Know."
